A delightful stay at Clayhanger again. The quietness and amazing views are such a wonderful antidote to the world we live in at the moment. Walks from the doorstep are plentiful and further afield are the beaches of the Jurassic Coast. Surely Dorset must offer some of the tastiest food in the UK. The nearby Swannery & Subtropical Gardens are well worth visiting.

We had another wonderful stay at Clayhanger in March. The house is so comfortable, with panoramic views of Chesil Beach & the sea. The peace and quiet are welcome and having access to the coastal path is a real benefit for walkers. The nearby beaches are clean and great for sandcastles. Within a short drive there are plenty of good quality “eateries” with delicious fresh fish! The Dorset food scene is really thriving. Both the Swannery and the Tropical Gardens in Abbotsbury are worth a visit and also have cafes.

Another restful and very comfortable visit to Clayhanger Lodge. Always the beautiful sunrises & sunsets. The house itself is charming, beds so comfy, kitchen well equipped, WiFi works and plenty of gorgeous Dorset countryside to explore. Dorset is a fish lovers paradise when it comes to food. Delicious meals served in amazing settings. The bonus in September was the weather - sun & blue sky.

The house was idyllically located and very little to fault - a great boot/utility room, well-equipped kitchen. My only feedback would be horribly hard and overused mattresses (we all felt this) - this was very similar to a property the year before we had rented from Ilchester Estates. They were uncomfortable and I was yearning to get back to my own bed by the end of the week! The drive was also being reconstructed so if we had turned up in an expensive low slung car we might have had problems - probably should have given a heads up on the state of the gravel drive! Otherwise fabulous house and location. The house was clean although signs of black dog hairs in the master bedroom!

Clayhanger Lodge is a large, comfortable cottage in a quiet setting with views all around of beautiful countryside and the sea. The appointments are luxurious which we thoroughly enjoyed. There is access for those who are less able which would be further enhanced with a walk in shower. We are really looking forward to our next visit.

This is our third visit to Clayhanger Lodge.
It is a beautiful unspoilt part of the country, not too busy and within easy reach of some beautiful spots. The access to the south west coastal path and wonderful walks along there is perfect for our dog walks. Also the enclosed garden is great and very secure for the dogs.
The property itself is so spacious and peaceful. Plenty of room to bring extended family and for everyone to have enough privacy.
The beds are huge and comfortable. The facilities are brilliant with everything you could possibly need in the kitchen, good WiFi and spacious en-suite bathrooms to each room.
The only very slight niggles I have are the place is looking a little tired and could do with a lick of paint. The sofa is quite annoying as the huge cushions keep constantly slipping forward and are difficult and heavy to replace. The sofa is also looking tired.
Almost all of the patio chairs need replacing as the arms are falling off.
With these things sorted it would be perfect and I wouldn’t let it stop me returning!

We had a fabulous week staying at Clayhanger Lodge in the heart of the countryside, but just a 30 minute walk into Abbotsbury.

The barn is well equipped, clean and well maintained, great to have all the bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms.
We have already booked another Illchester Estate cottage for next summer.

This is in a truly lovely location should you like walking and beautiful countryside/coast. The lounge area was somewhat tired and with massive settees which left it a bit short of room (for 6) but everywhere else was beautifully kept. The bedrooms were each ensuite and with a TV. The beds were very comfortable, with lovely bedding. The kitchen was extremely well equipped and the large fridge/freezer and cooker were much appreciated. Plenty of the usual items provided like tea/coffee/milk and cleaning materials. The property is almost on the coastal path and, if you are not a walker, the village is a couple of miles away down a narrow road (with not much traffic). It is a very secluded spot with an occupied farmhouse next door (not close) but nobody else in the vicinity. We were able to have a Tesco delivery on the first evening which saved us having to drive just for food. The outside space was excellent with a beautiful patio and a back garden as well. There was a path to the patio which was obviously made especially for wheelchair use but the edge of it was not clearly defined and we thought that needed changing - maybe by adding some potted plants. There are 3 or 4 steps into the living area from the kitchen and more from the living area to the bedrooms. We very much enjoyed our stay.

We have returned to Clayhanger every September for several years now. The house is spacious, always immaculately clean and very well presented. The facilities are excellent - WiFi, TVs, BBQ, enclosed lawned area and a very well equipped kitchen. The views of the sea and Chesil Beach are magnificent as are the sunrises and the sunsets. The location is ideal for exploring both coastal and rural Dorset and the coastal path is just behind the house. The area is very well provided with some of the best restaurants and, a very important feature this year, most have outdoor space. The team behind the Luxury Dorset Cottages is brilliant and most helpful from the booking to the end of the stay.

Super comfortable beds and perfect location. So quiet at night it took some getting used to! Loved sitting on the seat in the back garden watching the cows early in the morning. A picnic table on the grass would complete it. Ate at the clubhouse - expensive but worth it for the view of the sunset - and crab cafe where fish was amazing. Can’t wait to return.

We enjoyed a week at Clayhanger Lodge in late August and can't recommend it highly enough. It is a beautifully converted farm building with plenty of space inside and out. The interiors are basic but functional and certainly won't offend anyone! Beds are comfy and bathrooms in each bedroom provide shows and baths. The views are exceptional and we walked from the house every day with our dog. A great location for exploring the area, with Lyme Regis and Weymouth close by. We ate at The Hive and The Clubhouse in Burton Bradstock and had two suppers at the newly refurbished Elm Tree in Langton Herring. All excellent!

We stayed at Clayhanger Lodge A few years ago and it is the ONLY place we have ever revisited as it is gorgeous. Located just out of towns enough to avoid the herds of tourists, on the south west coastal path for wonderful walks and within easy reach of everywhere we love. The accommodation is outstanding with a huge kitchen/dining/living area to relax in too. We’ve already rebooked for next year too!

Everything about this house is glorious...the bedrooms are all so comfortable with the most comfortable beds ever and bathrooms lovely with endless hot water...the decoration is fabulous and the kitchen has everything and more of what one could possibly need. The views are amazing and the walks from the house fabulous. Our only sadness was we could not stay a third week as it was booked. We will definitely be back and everyone at Luxury Dorset Cottages could not have been kinder or more helpful.

Just had a lovely stay at Clayhanger lodge, very spacious apart from a knife sharpener (my husbands moan) it was like a home from home. The grandchildren loved the garden & being surrounded by the cows & various other wildlife. Plenty of local pubs to
eat at and Weymouth only a few miles away. We were very lucky with the weather which makes all the difference.

Clayhanger Lodge is a very special place to us. We have been coming for a few years now and as soon as we arrive we feel the peace and tranquillity of the location, looking over the Dorset countryside to Chesil beach and the sea beyond.
The barn itself is beautifully presented and always clean and fresh.
Just one suggestion — the sofas in the sitting area are extremely uncomfortable and it would be very much appreciated if they could be replaced.
Apart from that all the furnishings and facilities are in good condition and we look forward to our next stay.
Thanks to all at Dorset Luxury Cottages.

A very spacious, comfortable lounge and bedrooms with a large well fitted out kitchen. What more could anyone ask. Easy to find using satelite longitute/latitude coordinates provided plus loads of parking. Completely hassle free, as the pre-visit proactive help from the excellent companies staff, plus the in venue info pack was completely comprehensive. We would not hesitate to stay in one of their properties in the future. Lovely open views of the countryside, isolated apart from the farmhouse next door. Nice patio area (table/chairs/seat pads) with remote sea views.
Tips: You need to access via a farm road with a few ruts, so drive slowly, but they were filling these in during our stay. There is Freesat in the lounge (and I think bedrooms), plus a DVD player with a few DVD's, but you might want to bring a few favourites to watch. The wifi is good. There is a washing machine, but you would need to bring some washing powder. There is a dishwasher with tablets. You can get take away seafood delivered, but we didn't realise until the last day (I think this is from the farmhouse next door). I wish we had found these properties years ago.

We very much enjoyed another exceptional holiday at Clayhanger Lodge. The location is wonderful with amazing views and all facilities are exceptional. Very comfortable beds and the rooms are always clean and beautifully appoointed.
Just one little comment— the sofas in the living area are very uncomfortable and it would be good if they could be replaced.
Also my husband says the track leading up to Clayhanger is very bumpy and could do with some attention.
Apart from this we had a lovely relaxing time and we look forward to our next visit.

Very enjoyable family summer holiday. Very comfortable, spacious and well equipped property with great views of the sea and the countryside, 5 mins walk to the coastal path. Great area to explore. Would benefit from additional garden furniture in the back garden and potentially enclosing the front patio and driveway to be more dog friendly.

Lounge furnishings very uncomfortable. Not child friendly too many internal steps. No wall cupboards in kitchen. Only one hand towel between two in each room, no bath sheets. No sheet for baby's cot. Driveway to property more like a farm track being full of pot holes BE VERY CAREFUL.

The overall stay was very pleasant however, one of the beds was broken. Although we can not fault how quickly once contacted, they replaced the bed it was disappointing that this was not checked upon arrival. The rooms were of good size, and comfortable for our family to stay in for the week. The garden was also of good size, but it’s a shame it didn’t have any garden furniture within the enclosed grassed area at the back of the cottage, instead of where it is located on the patio area which over looks the parking and is not enclosed for children and dogs. On departure it felt a little rushed, we were requested to leave at 10 however, cleaners arrived at sight at around 9:45 making it feel like they were rushing you out the house. It has to be said though the location of the cottage is great giving fab views and a sense of peacefulness.

The property is a sympathetically converted set of farm buildings. The original farmhouse (now a private dwelling) is set to one side and unfortunately blocks most of the direct view of Abbotsbury Swannery and Chesil Beach, but the remaining countryside view is attractive, with no further houses visible. The property is situated at the top of a long farm track, but this is in reasonable condition (4x4 not essential). There is no passing traffic and the property is very quiet (except for a single occasion when the neighbours and their guests were out in their garden). A short walk further up the track leads directly to the coast path, which follows a ridge, providing great views over the Fleet and Chesil Beach to the sea. Nearby Abbotsbury is a lovely village, with a couple of shops providing all necessary food supplies. The remaining buildings of the earlier Abbey also provide interest (as well as most of the building stone!). The nearby sub tropical gardens are also lovely (though expensive).
All the rooms are light, spacious and comfortable. The only slight whinge we had is that some of the kitchen crockery needs topping up for the expected number of guests, presumably following earlier breakages (left comments in the maintenance book)

We really enjoyed our stay - as did our dogs! Fabulous view of the sea & coastline from the house - it's a great location. Everywhere was really accessible & we visited loads of beaches from Studland & Lulworth to Charmouth & Lyme Regis. Abbotsbury & the surrounding area is so pretty & it's also easy to get in to Weymouth from the house. We could have stayed another week as the house was very comfortable with everything you could need - brilliant that the garden was totally dog friendly & enclosed. It was Thank you for a great week away - we will definitely be back!

Clayhanger Lodge is an amazing property - it has a stunning location and has obviously been renovated with great care and attention to detail. However, the ongoing maintenance and cleaning of the property lets it down. What is most disappointing is that almost every issue I had with the property has been raised in previous reviews. Clearly if the owners/managers of the property cared enough they would respond to the reviews! When I am paying for a luxury property I expect that level of care.

Most importantly the blinds in the main bedroom are unacceptable. They are made of very thin paper and provide no block to the light in the mornings. In the summer you can not fail to be woken by the glaring sun as soon as it comes up, even with eye masks as we had.

Secondly, the bedrooms and stairs are carpeted with a light cream carpet. If you are going to make this choice you need to replace it regularly or have it industrially cleaned every year. Otherwise it looks tatty very quickly - which it does. A better option would have been wood flooring (as elsewhere) and rugs which you can clean/replace regularly.

Thirdly, the property needs a more thorough clean. A proper bit of elbow grease would dramatically improve it, for example, clean the windows, brush away the cobwebs around all the doors, wipe the skirting boards, change light bulbs which have blown, fix the dripping toilet in the main bedroom ensuite. The first thing you notice is all the finger marks all over the glass doors. As soon as we opened the back door we walked into a cobweb with lots of dead flies in it - it had clearly been there for some time. The property had clearly been cleaned but it had been a quick, not thorough, clean.

The property is stunning! It is being let it down by the way it is being looked after!

Beautiful location, brilliant if you're looking for peace and quiet. Loved the surrounding views of the countryside and sea.
Windows of the Cottage need a good clean. Blinds in the master bedroom downstairs really do let a lot of light in even at night. Sofas comfortable but looked like the cushions hadn't been taken off and re plumped so they looked a bit sloppy (as though they'd been sat on previously and just left as they were). Some cups were still dirty and a wine glass had lipstick stains on it. Also, big black hair on one of the bath mats. Maybe things just need a closer inspection before new guests arrive?
However, still a beautiful Cottage in the type of location we were looking for. Love that it's detached and that the beds are huge!

The barn has been converted to a good standard & is well equipped, only missing a wine cooler & lobster crackers!
It's in an ideal location for walking the coastal path & has great sea views. It was great to be able to bring our dog & there was a boot room & cleaning facilities to ensure the outside was kept outside. Abbotsbury has some good attractions and it was a nice surprise to receive a discount for staying at Clayhanger.
We enjoy seafood, so it was a bonus to find that Sally next door ran a business delivering a fantastic plateau de fruits de mer.
Our only slight gripes were that there was a lot of cobwebs & the windows weren't very clean, but you're in the country next to the sea, so I guess that could be excused. The bed in the master bedroom was really uncomfortable & really not of up to the standard of the rest of the property, but I'm sure the property managers will address this now that they have been advised it's an issue.
The customer service was great, I found them to be very helpful.

Thank you for taking the time to write a review of your last minute stay at Clayhanger which I am delighted to hear was enjoyed despite not being Turkey! I am sure that Pepper enjoyed her time with you all besides the sea. I am sorry to hear about the cobwebs and windows which have now been addressed, the sea air does keep the window cleaner very busy! I have passed a wine cooler and lobster crackers request to the Property Manager who is also investigating the master bed. Sally just started her business this summer so I am pleased you discovered it and enjoyed seafood feasts from Sally's Fish Camp. We hope that you and your family choose to return to Abbotsbury in the future, we are currently renovating a 6th barn which was used in the 2015 movie Far From the Madding Crowd. It is a charming thatched barn built in 1798 located 1 mile east of Clayhanger Lodge that will have 3 ensuite bedrooms and an inverted layout to take advantage of the glorious surrounding countryside.

We stayed in Clayhanger lodge in July, its a stunning location and the views are amazing (even when it rains) The lodge is immaculate, its furnished with exactly what you need for a family holiday and comes with a much needed welcome pack with tea and coffee. The beds are comfortable and having a unsuite in each one was fantastic. Abbotsbury is a great place to be based when seeing West Dorset, you have two pubs and a tea room 2 miles from Clayhanger which makes eating out easy and there is a handy guide to all the local amenities in the lodge.
The only negative is that the blinds in one of the bedrooms are extremely thin and delicate, and let the morning sun in, not great for a lie in. Would happily recommend staying here.

Thank you for taking the time to write such a descriptive review. You paint a clear picture of the barn and surroundings which will help other guests make their booking choices. Clayhanger is exceptionally well located and our most indulgent property. We are delighted that your family enjoyed their stay and could see the beauty of their surroundings despite the rain. We hope to welcome you back in the future. Our new barn conversion will be open in 2018 and the bedrooms will be darker (Merry Hill Barn has arrow slit windows). It is located 2 miles east of Clayhanger and will have inverted living to take in the landscape through floor to ceiling picture windows. The barn was used in the filming of the 2015 movie Far from the Madding Crowd and will have 3 ensuite bedrooms.

This place is amazing. Beautifully decorated with a very comfortable, stylish interior. Attention to detail blew us away, making our stay just perfect. The outside space is fantastic too. Location is so peaceful but very close to the lovely, friendly Abbotsbury. We could not fault any aspect of this property and its location and had a lovely stay in this beautiful and unspoilt part of Dorset. Despite staying during the hottest June week since 1976, the property stayed remarkably cool indoors and there were often pleasant see breezes to keep us cool outdoors. The views from the raised patio and grounds generally were stunning and it was great to have the SW Coastal Path very nearby meaning we could enjoy a number of walks straight out of the door.

Clayhanger Lodge is very well appointed and spacious but still manages to maintain a very homely feel. We would certainly expect to return again in the future, as we enjoy the peace and quiet it offers but also found it an excellent base for exploring the wider area.

We expected luxury accommodation and were disappointed. The two huge settees are the most uncomfortable things to sit on as your legs can't reach the ground. The cups, glasses, plates etc. are located in a lower kitchen cupboard which means you have to stoop to reach into the cupboard to get them. The property is marketed for those with restricted mobility but none of the bathrooms are suitable. It would be to the benefit of the owners to have one of the down stairs bathrooms with a walk-in shower. The location was lovely and there are some great walks which means no driving. The property was not as clean as expected with dirty skirting boards, cobwebs on the walls and rafters of the upstairs bedroom. More information concerning recycling would be useful as the requirement in Dorset was not the same as where we live. Luckily for us, but not for them, the refuse truck broke it's axel while collecting waste from the lodge so we were able to discuss recycling with the men while they waited for a repair truck.

I have now taken Clayhanger times. Each time I am blown away by it's incredible position and views. It's close enough to Abbotsbury to not feel totally cut off, but far enough away that you're really away from everything. The beds are huge and incredibly comfortable, the kitchen is fantastic if you like to cook and there are great walks to do from the house so you don't really need to use a car all weekend! It's also incredibly warm too. There is one room that because it was a farm building has odd windows and therefore the blinds are very thin - so not good for sleepers that find the light tricky. There's lots to go and see nearby; Chesil beach, the swannery, go and eat crab at West Bay or at Weymouth - book it asap, you won't regret it.

Thank you for taking the time to write such a helpful and thoughtful review. Clayhanger is our biggest and most indulgent barn conversion with 3 super king ensuite bedrooms in 350sq m of floor space. It has a very loyal following of guests who consider it their 'home away from home'. We are so pleased that you have already booked again for 2018 and look forward to welcoming you back. The Club House at West Bexington is now open and offers fine dining, exquisite seafood, original 1930s decor and glorious sea views. Definitely one for your next trip! And when the bespoke blinds are renewed, I have passed your comments on about having a thicker/darker fabric.

Excellent property, providing very comfortable accommodation with stunning views of the surrounding countryside and Jurassic Coast. Three en suite bedrooms, open plan, spacious living accommodation and a terrace overlooking the sea were ideal for holiday living. The beds were amazing and we christened them "marshmallow" beds - white, comforting and light! A superb base from which to explore the many delights that Dorset has to offer including the Swannery and Sub-tropical gardens in Abbotsbury, both of which are beautifully presented. Feeding time at the Swannery is a delight. For food lovers Dorset is "food heaven" with particularly delicious seafood. For walkers, the coastal path is on the doorstep.
Booking was an easy process and Kerry provided an enormous amount of helpful information regarding restaurants, things to do and where to visit. Kerry's help continued during our stay and her enthusiasm and knowledge of the area were invaluable.

This is our third visit to Clayhanger Lodge and yet again we thoroughly enjoyed it. The converted barn is such a great space. The three all en suite bedrooms are perfect for our group as is the location - straight onto the coastal paths or a short walk into the beautiful village of Abbotsbury. Thank you for your five star fabulous review! We really appreciate you taking the time to describe the property and location. You certainly make the most of all your stays in Abbotsbury (and Melbury Osmond!). The Hive is truly scrumptious and they are currently renovating another property in West Bexington which will be similar but less understated! It will be called the Club House and offer fine dining by reservation, due to open at the end of April 2017. We very much look forward to your next trip with family or friends.

Ideal for 3 generations of family. Plenty of space, quality furnishings, kitchen. Everything we needed. Great to walk over the hill to Abbotsbury and Swannery
