The Steading, Kinlochfollart, Dunvegan is a fantastic holiday home on the shores of Loch Dunvegan. With a large open plan lounge / dining / kitchen area with wonderful views, three ensuite bedrooms, games room upstairs and direct access to the shore, The Steading makes an incredible base for a holiday to Skye!

We have stayed at the Steading before and loved every minute. We returned after just 6 months to revisit the wonderful views. The owner and house manager are very responsive if anything is needed. It is a comfortable and deceptively spacious house with great views. Dunvagen is peaceful but has numerous restaurants which are open throughout the year.

Our second time at The Steading.
Pool table still no good- it dips in the middle! So can’t use it.
Heating comes on at stupid o’clock and makes very loud noises and wakes everyone up. Sometimes no hot water left after 1 shower. Welcome pack none existent. Not enough loo rolls and kitchen rolls and cleaning equipment. Not enough dishwasher tabs or logs for the weeks stay. The first time we stayed here in 2021 it was total opposite of all of the above.

It’s a great place to stay but needs some attention, beds not great- hard mattress, towels small and lacks comfort. A window seat with cushions would be a great little bonus as would a hot tub outside.

Washing machine was broken but guy came out but then couldn’t fix so hopefully that’s repaired.

Great location to explore the island and Dunvegan. Janns cafe and Blass in the village are great. Lots of other food places too in Dunvegan that were all open during our October stay. Janns curry’s are amazing as are her huge cakes!!!

You can see seals outside most days and explore the beach when the tide is out. Lots of herons to see too and sheep. Nice walk around the house. Very peaceful and quiet and no distractions. Great looking over the loch with a cuppa in the mornings watching seals bobbing.

Places to visits- The Oyster Shed, Coral Beach, Neist Point Lighthouse, Old Man Storr, Portree Harbour, Distillery’s, Uig Hotel, Fairy Glen.

All in all a great place, but for the price you pay you do expect thy little touch of luxury and there was nothing, not even a bottle of milk. Could definitely be improved but as a base for the week if you’re just exploring I guess it wouldn’t matter. Rooms are all spacious and en-suite and easily sleeps 6 people , lots of privacy from each other if needed.
Hot water allowance just isn’t enough for 6 people if all 6 are showering /bathing each night and heating is unpredictable even though it says it’s all set on timer it seems to please itself. Just a shame we were woken most mornings around 2/3am as I came in and made loud whistling noises waking us all up and no way to switch it off or on as obviously controlled elsewhere.

Would return if improvements and comfort improved.

We had a lovely stay on Skye at the Steading. Wonderful location, walkable to the village and the view...

A few things could do with updating, as previous reviews have noted, the beds could be improved, a Nespresso machine or similar and the TV reception was a little iffy. However, these are very minor niggles to what is a lovely property.

Enjoyed our holiday again. i feel some things are needing upgraded. Towels are on the thin side now. Some dishes needing replaced as discoloured. For the price we pay we feel more toilet rolls, kitchen roll should be provided.

The Steading is MUCH bigger than you expect from the photographs provided on the site. It's a beautiful, very spacious house which we visited with the 4 of us (and a dog), but would easily fit the 6 people it has bedrooms for. Each bedroom has an ensuite, the views from all windows are incredible, and The Steading was easily found (google maps took us right to it, we didn't have to follow any other directions).

Although I'd recommend this place anyways, it would become a real luxury stay if it would go through some upgrades. One of the bedrooms can do with new mattresses (very soft), the French doors didn't lock very well, and pillows both for decorating but really to be comfortable in the incredible window seat would be a true win. Just some suggestions for the owners, but we loved it regardless.

The Steading is a fabulous property and the location is excellent, we love it.

We would have given all 5’s but unfortunately the beds are very uncomfortable and the mattresses could do with upgrading and replacing along with the duvets in the twin room, as the feathers slide to the bottom of them.

All three sofas could do with upgrading and replacing as the material is frayed on the arms of one and all are well past their best looks and comfort wise.

The property is very clean and the kitchen is very well equipped, could do with some plastic type chopping boards as wooden not always the most hygienic.

We stayed during winter and the property was lovely and warm and we hope to return to return to The Steading next year!

Would recommend a few more cooking utensils (especially griddles) for 5 to 6 people. No cleaning materials left this time. Apart from that comfortable and enjoyable.

We had a wonderful time in Skye. The Steading house was great and comfortable. We loved the beautiful view from the windows and the fireplace. The house looks really nice and bright. The big windows make you feel you are so close to the nature even when you are inside the house.
Our dog enjoyed all the big spaces indoor and outdoor and she loved exploring on the beach what is just in front of the house. Wonderful. We liked to see all the different birds come and go during the day. It felt really relaxing to be there. Thank you very much!

The Isle of Skye - and particularly Dunvegan - is the ideal place for a family holiday. The Steading is in an amazing location with views that even surpass what is advertised online. The reception room is enormous and comfortable with woodburner, several sofas and a large coffee table filled with games and puzzles. The upstairs playroom is also a HUGE bonus. The bedrooms are all a great size and comfortable with en suites.

The condition of the property was good, not great - and could easily reach great status with some simple home improvements that were overlooked. There were four missing lightbulbs around the property; the ground floor lights didn't work for the first two days (after which the housekeeper took a look and called out an electrician); the boiler didn't work for the final two days so we needed to turn on the immersion heater and wait for hot water; both of the bedrooms we used had 4 missing buttons on the duvets; there were tears/holes in some kitchen linens. All minor issues but enough to surmise that it didn't feel top-rate. It took multiple calls to the owner and the housekeeper to get a response. Again, all minor but for the price, you would expect everything to be in good working order and if not, to be dealt with immediately.

Overall, the great reception room and views make this property a winner.

What an amazing place to stay. We we’re lucky enough to find this lovely cottage in our hour of need, and we were spoilt! Amazing daily views of seals right outside the window and lots of seabirds, access to our own beach to collect shells and wander. Such an amazing cottage with everything you need. Underfloor heating amazing. Very clean and well thought out! Really couldn’t of asked for a better stay: in easy reach of Dunvegan village with a lovely bakery- must visit if you stay, amazing cakes! Lots of lovely walks right from the doorstep. Can’t wait to come back again! We had an issue with the log burner, but the agents/ owners were quick to respond and help how they could which was very appreciated! Thanks again for a great stay x

We originally booked the Steading for April 2020, moved the booking to April 2021 and finally were able to get there for October half term. All the delay was due of course, to Covid.
We’d been here before and if anything, we had an even lovelier holiday than the first time. This is a great holiday home; so comfortable and in a stunning location at the head of the loch. We loved watching otters, geese, seals and sheep from the windows and walked to the village for meals at the Old School a couple of times.

A beautiful property - even more so than the pictures suggest. Location glorious - the bird life is fabulous, we saw seals every day, and so easy just to walk into Dunvegan if needed. Underfloor heating was toasty and a godsend. Kids loved the table tennis. Beds were super comfortable, and kitchen extremely well equipped. Overall a fabulous and much needed relaxing holiday. We would stay in this property again.

We immediately felt at home in The Steading. Thank you to the caretaker for the cleanliness of the property and for the welcome pack of groceries.
We have been to self catering properties on Skye several times and have enjoyed them all but had previously visited all of the popular tourist destinations so, for this holiday, we wanted a property with a spectacular location where we would be content to just “be in the moment” . The Steading was perfect and was by far located in the most breathtaking location we have experienced. We loved it, It was spacious and the combination of a modern, well equipped kitchen and some “traditional” furniture elsewhere in the house, gave it a unique quirky feel.

Absolutely loved our stay at The Steading! The accommodation offered us everything we needed for a comfortable stay. Located right on the lochside with amazing views over MacLeod Tables. We spent every night watching the sun go down and the lovely sunsets.

All bedrooms were spacious and each provided a view over the loch. The kitchen had every utensil you could need! The games room was great with lots of activities to keep us occupied.

Overall the whole family enjoyed our stay.

My family stayed at the Steading for Christmas 2019. We arrived late (grateful for the detailed directions in the dark) and were delighted to find a Christmas tree and some goodies to welcome us. The cottage is lovely and very well appointed. The kitchen is particularly good - excellent for preparing our Christmas dinner. We had 2 cars and the parking was more than ample.

We were blessed with good weather and the views across the loch are stunning. The telescope in the sitting room is perfect for watching the local wildlife. The highlight for us was a 'close encounter' with the grey seal colony when around 30 seals watched us arriving back for a day out (ironically we had been looking for seals!). We watched each other quietly for a while. Magical memory.

All in all, we had a wonderful stay and would highly recommend.

The Steading is a beautiful house in a glorious location. There are wonderful views from the windows and the sea is a few steps from the front door. Seals and birds can be seen from the windows and McCleods Tables are looking down on you. The house is well equipped, very comfortable and lovely and warm (it was so warm we didn't light the log burner once!). The house is a short drive from Dunvegan which has a little shop, fruit and veg shop, a bakery with fantastic sausage rolls, a petrol station and several cafes and eateries. So you can feel away from it all but with plenty of amenities nearby. We would definitely go back again.

The Steading is superbly located by the waterside and is a very well equipped modern property. We spent a very comfortable week with only one small problem involving the heating. With the arrival of wet and chilly weather we had to call the agents to arrange a plumber to get the heating working. The property is fitted with underfloor heating which was not working. The plumber did a good job however the heating of the main living room was still not working when we left. The entire heating system requires a complete service including each of the room control boxes none of which were working.
Overall even with the heating problem we were very impressed with the Steading.

Beautiful house, situated in a stunning, secluded location, with Dunvegan Village just a 10 minute walk away. Numerous things to see and do in the area, Nesit Point being one.

Fully equipped house with all you need. Clean crisp white bed linen. Warm and spacious. Tastefully decorated.
Very enjoyable stay and seeing the seals each morning and evening was an added treat.
