An extremely spacious one bedroom cottage within easy reach of the city centre. Equipped to the highest standard with outdoor patio space and plenty of parking, this property makes for a great break in the city.

Modern and light, but also cosy in the evenings. Kitchen very well kitted out with everything you need. Very comfortable bed. Excellent location as very quiet in the courtyard, but very short walk to bus stop - buses run regularly into York. We had a lov3ly holiday here.

The highlight of this property was the kitchen which was spacious and light with quality appliances. Everything was nicely designed. The bedroom and bathroom, built in the eves, were comfortable but small including the bed. It’s a shame the shower was not up to the standard of the kitchen equipment. It was an uncomfortable space for anyone 6ft or over. The bedroom does not have a door which was fine but I was woken in the morning by the light from a skylight above the stairwell. Take a sleeping mask! The bread, milk and wine provided were very welcome. We were unable to use the Nespresso as we only drink decaf. There were no decaf pods and we could not buy any because this Vertu machine would not fit original pods so that was disappointing. (We also told Stays York that their welcome pack should have a decaf option.) The regular bus service into York together with the excellent Plough Inn across the road mean we would certainly consider staying here again.

This is a very comfortable maisonette with off road parking in a quiet courtyard development right in the heart of Fulford. The entrance hall has over door hooks for outside coats and enough space under the radiator for wet shoes/boots. A door leads to the spacious living area with its large, comfortable sofa and coffee table as well as occasional tables with table lamps to compliment the spotlight main lighting. The wall mounted TV has a full Freeview range and excellent sound quality. There is a downstairs toilet just off this room, but the headroom is quite low, so be wary if you are taller than about 5' 6".

The large kitchen has a huge glass roof letting in plenty of natural light and a table for eating at. The patio doors lead on to a lovely enclosed courtyard garden with two sets of seating to catch the sun or shade at all parts of the day. The well equipped kitchen has everything you would expect including a microwave, full size oven and induction hob, slimline dishwasher, toaster, kettle and a Nespresso coffee machine with a selection of pods available. There is an excellent selection of cooking utensils, pans and some very good quality kitchen knives. There is also a set of salt and pepper mills, which are not always present in rental properties. The fridge/freezer are full size and there are plenty of cupboards offering lots of space for food storage during your stay.

The stairs lead directly to the bedroom; note that there isn't a door at the top of the stairs. The double bed is very comfortable and the room is warm and quite light, having two skylights with built in blinds. The shower room is also up here, with a walk-in shower that has plenty of hot water. As the upstairs is in the eaves, there is limited head room at the top of the stairs and in the shower cubicle for taller people. There ISN'T an electric shaver point.
The bedroom offers a good size chest of drawers for clothes and some open hanging space. You may want to take some hangers with you if you have more than about 8 items requiring hanging. There is a hairdryer in one of the drawers.

All in all, this is a fantastic property for visiting York as it is less than 100 yards to a bus stop with several services directly into the city. It is high spec, comfortable and very warm. The hosts kindly supply a welcome package including:
tea bags
1 pint milk
a bottle of very pleasant wine
a good quality loaf of bread
some biscuits
coffee pods
a couple of dishwasher tablets
a couple of washing machine pods
washing up liquid
washing-up sponge and wiping up cloth
spare bin bags

Take for yourself:
tea towel
foil/cling film
shaver adapter to use downstairs

Eating out locally - The Plough across the road is very good and reasonably priced for city eating BUT book a table, it is very popular with both locals and visitors so getting a table as a walk-in will be difficult.

We would highly recommend The Smithy and would certainly look to return here.

We have really enjoyed our recent stay at The Smithy. The building is in a quiet courtyard, just off a main road into central York. The kitchen was very spacious and well equipped and the bread, wine and milk etc, were a nice touch. The bed was extremely comfortable and we slept very well during our stay. We hope to return in the future.

The Smithy is a great place to stay, this was our second visit in this apartment, unfortunately there was a big damp patch in the kitchen and I found a large piece of broken glass in the bathroom, luckily for me it was under the shower mat.

Great place to stay for a few days. Quiet and peaceful but easy to reach lots of places. The Plough across the road has a brilliant atmosphere and is very welcoming. The Smithy is well-equipped and clean; we would stay there again.

The Smithy was ideal accommodation. Lots of personal space, pleasant surroundings and a good location for the city centre. The hosts took time to ensure we had all we needed for our stay from towels, toiletries and milk in the fridge to the extra mile with gift bag of goodies and wine

Location was ideal situated in a small courtyard with friendly neighbours. Entry from both front door and small rear courtyard. There is a good parking area and a bus stop within a hundred yards with a regular service to York centre. Good outside sitting area in small courtyard which receives the sun for most of the day in good weather. Property has been refurbished to a high standard. Ideal setup for two people with the kitchen area particularly well designed to allow light in at all times. Layout well thought out with sleeping area upstairs en-suite with a toilet downstairs. Furniture and fittings in great condition. Would stay there again.

The Smithy is located perfectly just on the fringe of York, bus stop right by and also a selection of decent pubs/ eateries within very easy walking distance. Property has been modernised to a very high standard and has everything you need plus more for a comfortable stay. Only one small observation was that there was a lot of spiderwebs, but we had just come out of lockdown, so guess that the place had been empty for a while.
We wouldn't think twice about booking this again and would recommend it.

We had a great experience staying at the Smithy for a couple of weeks. It's surprisingly quiet for being just off of the main road, and there are several pubs and restaurants nearby for meals. The nearest grocery stores are a 10-15 min walk away, which is a bit inconvenient if you're planning on cooking, but it's easy enough to pop by on your way home as they're on the way from the city centre. For sightseeing, there is an easy bus route into York, or a lovely walk along the river if the weather's nice. The cottage itself was charming - extremely well renovated and modern, with lots of light, clean and cosy. It's the perfect size for a couple, and we thought it was great value.

Stays York provide excellent customer service, responding to questions quickly and professionally, and giving us clear directions that made the check-in/out process very smooth. We will definitely book with them again!

The Smithy is the perfect property for a weekend stay in York.
Contemporary high end appliances in kitchen. Modern lounge . Simply gorgeous.
Upstairs a bright contemporary bedroom with double bed. Plenty of hangers and drawer space for clothes.
Contemporary bathroom with walk in shower again beautifully clean and bright .
Situated in a far corner of a court yard off a busy main rd. However you would never know the road was there.
Small paved patio to the rear of property with table and chairs which was a lovely bonus to have some outside space with the fab weather. Came with parking for one car . Buses are frequent so leave the car and get the bus . Lovely pubs and Fish & Chips shop all very close by.
When next visiting York will book again
Thanks to Bea at stay York answered all my questions promptly

The location. 35 minute walk to the City Centre either along the main road or down by the river. If it is not flooded! Delightful.
3 pubs 2 of which serve food and an excellent fish and chip shop and a hotel that we can go to eat and drink in. All within a few hundred yards.
Designer outlet shopping 20 minute walk or 5 mins by car or bus. You will need transport to return with some bargains.
York possibly one of my favourite cities. Beautiful just to walk around with all its history. But also interesting shops. And museums enough for every interest. And pubs.
The accommodation was terrific. A secluded private area to eat out in. Which may be best in summer. The Smithy is private off the main road in a mews. The facilities its decor cleanliness warmth comfort were all that we could have wanted or asked for. The neighbours were friendly We were invited to their party as they did not want us to be inconvenienced by it. We weren’t and we enjoyed ourselves.
In short a great stay. Thanks.

My wife & I were delighted with this little town house. Light and spacious. High quality fittings & furnishings. Spotlessly clean. Complimentary toiletries & tea/coffee. The car space allowed us to leave the car parked at the house and use the frequent bus service to visit York. The managing agents were friendly and efficient in resolving some small issues which we countered while we were there. When our holiday came to an end, we didn't want to leave !

On the whole we would recommend The Smithy but on arrival the cooker wasn't very clean at all nor were the baking trays. There was a Microvave included in the spec. but there wasn't one in the property. When we contacted Stays York they contacted the owner and a microwave was delivered to outside the front door, even though we were in the property at the time. When we found it we realised why no one had rung the bell - the microwave had a foot missing and was filthy inside and out. Otherwise the property was lovely and we enjoyed our stay.

Stays York replied more than 1 year ago
Many thanks for the review. The lack of microwave in the property was an oversight on our part but was put right the same day. The microwave that was dropped to the apartment should certainly not have been in need of a clean though and we would certainly apologise for that. We're pleased to hear that otherwise you had an enjoyable stay and were very happy with the property. Just to confirm, the issue with microwave has been resolved for future guests.
