We have just come back from a few days staying at the Sumburgh Head Lighthouse holiday cottage and it has to be one of our favourite holidays ever.
The former lighthouse keeper's cottage is right at the base of the lighthouse and at the end of the complex, so the views are astonishing. The cottage itself is beautifully decorated and fitted out with good quality furniture and kitchenware (which is not as common as you might expect in self-catering!). The Aga in the kitchen keeps the cottage lovely and warm, but there's also a gas hob for the uninitiated.

What an amazing location the cottages are In. Frank greeted us and made us feel right at home telling us a lot about the history of the place.Having that context and spending time with someone who is a local and knows the place so well, was really inspirational . He made our guide special. We thought the cottage itself was extremely clean and cosy. We'd recommend a stay (however brief!) to anyone.
Throughout the year I traveled to many places within UK and abroad, and my trip to Shetlands was the best of them all. Staying in the lighthouse was an excellent decision, as it made this trip unique. Bressay lighthouse is located on the edge of the island, away from the town in a quiet place. There is nothing like listening to the sea at night under a thousands of stars!
We love it here, our third visit and yet again we were lucky to see the Aurora. Internally and externally the building and furnishings are getting a bit tired, and the lack of an internet connection is a pain (no chance of emails to know the Northern Lights may make a showing). The place has a pay phone so for the trust to provide even a basic WiFi connection would be minimal investment.
Yet again we couldn't get hold of the custodians to arrange our time of arrival which is a pain that could do with sorting as you arrive on the ferry 60 miles away (so you can't just pop-in and check). It ...more
