Candlemaker’s Cottage is a handsome, Georgian townhouse that has been beautifully furnished, respecting the style of that era yet with all the modern conveniences needed for a relaxing stay. Sleeping six guests across three bedrooms with a family bathroom, cloakroom and additional wet room attached to a garden room. The cottage has an open-plan kitchen-breakfast room, an elegant dining room and a delightful living room with a smart TV and wood burner. Outside is a delightful, sunny courtyard garden and lawn with seating, a pergola, a BBQ, and a Garden Room, which serves as an office, summer sitting room or gym. Candlemaker’s Cottage is perfectly located to explore Bath, Castle Combe, Lacock and the Cotswolds.

A lovely quirky and cosy cottage.

A lovely cottage in the centre of the village. On the 'main road' of Marshfield, but a very quiet road with little traffic. Easy walk to two pubs and the village shop and access to unlimited number of beautiful countryside walks. Location excellent as near to two superb National Trust properties and close to Bath. The house was very comfortable and cosy. Beautifully decorated. We enjoyed cooking on the Aga, and although the kitchen was very quirky it was well equipped and worked well for a holiday cottage. Lovely outside area, however, we did not get to enjoy this being that our stay was over New Year and it rained for pretty much all of the time! We felt if the bathroom was updated we would give this property a 5* rating all round.

We - three couples - thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Candlemakers Cottage. It was so warm and cosy, spotless and well equipped. Communication with the owner was excellent, very quick to respond to a couple of queries. But to be honest, we were provided with very comprehensive information about the cottage and instructions for household items - including the Aga, as well as guides to the area and walks. We enjoyed a very pleasant meal at the friendly, nearby pub, the Catherine Wheel as well as morning coffee at the Tea rooms in the village. The Country Stores in Marshfield (only a hop away) are worth visiting - well stocked with everyday items as well as delicious treats. Another store, Vintage and Brown - definitely worth a visit. There is also a post office and another pub in the village and a wonderful looking garage. Marshfield is a lovely village which has a friendly, community feel and some very nice walks. We even met pigs and wallabies...yes, wallabies. Definitely would Recommend Candlemakers. Thank you to Louise.

I booked this cottage last October. My family and I have demanding jobs and were looking forward to a peaceful relaxing break, it would have been more peaceful to stay in the centre of Bath!
We arrived on a boiling hot day and the aga was on so the kitchen was like a furnace. As advised in the details I called the owner (as she does not want guests to adjust the setting). We had to be quite forceful to persuade her to turn it off!
To our horror roadworks started right in front of the property the next day at 8:30am and lasted until our last full day. The first evening, when we were about to go to bed my daughter found a half-dead dragonfly in her bed. When we got home, we were asked for our review. We contacted the owner first (attaching a photograph and a video of the noise levels) in the hope we would get a reasonable response and some compensation for our trip being ruined. She did not reply. We then got an email from Bolthole retreats saying they were sorry but they could not offer any compensation! We won't be returning.
Also worth noting, the lounge and dining room are smaller and darker than they appear on the website and the owner states she lives in Marshfield but more accurately lives directly opposite the cottage.

Thank you for taking the time to leave a review of your recent stay at Candlemakers Cottage, we are disappointed to read your feedback. We are afraid that any works taking place outside of the property are out of our control and we were not informed of the roadworks prior to your stay. Both the owner and we are sorry you found a dragonfly in the bed; the bedding was clean and fresh for your stay and unfortunately living in the countryside this can happen from time to time, this must have gotten trapped while the bed was being made and the owner would have been more than happy to change the bedding the next day if not that evening.

Candlemakers cottage was absolutely perfect. The cottage was extremely well equipped with everything we needed for self catering, beds were comfortable, constant hot water and well laid out interior with a lounge and separate dining room.
Although we only managed to sit outside a couple of times because of the weather the outside area was delightful and well equipped.
The location was ideal for us to visit Bath, local villages and National Trust properties. Marshfield has a shop that has a wide range of goods. The Catherine Wheel pub serves the most amazing meals, the Sunday lunch was the best I’ve had.
All in all a delightful holiday despite the weather.

My family and I (including baby and dog) spent a great February weekend in this tastefully decorated, well equipped cottage. The owner provided a box of toys for the baby and even helped with the delivery of a surprise bunch of flowers for my birthday. The cottage is in a great location for visiting Bath and Lacock and we enjoyed a good Sunday lunch in the village pub, The Catherine Wheel. There is very good village shop and a lovely walks from the village in this beautiful part of The Cotswolds.

I stayed at Candlemaker's Cottage with a group of friends for a chilled out 'girls' weekend where comfort, peace and fresh air were the key ingredients we had hoped for.

We got exactly that from our stay - Candlemaker's Cottage was super comfy, with three generous double rooms and well-equipped kitchen and comfortable relaxation areas complete with games and Netflix.

Marshfield is a lovely little Village with a couple of pubs and a quaint 'general store' (but not much else), but is also nestled amongst some of England's prettiest villages - so lots to see and do nearby. It is also very close to Bath, we used the Park & Ride which was super quick and efficient.

We used Viv's Cabs (excellent service) for an evening visit to The Castle Inn in Castle Combe (excellent gastropub).

One comment it is worth noting, the cottage guidebook says that the local pub, The Lord Nelson Inn, is a 'foodie haven'. The review is clearly out of date as it appears that the pub has changed ownership. We went there to eat and found it to be possibly the worst pub food we've ever experienced! Strongly suggest to avoid eating there (and the owners should update the guidebook).

We would definitely stay in the cottage again, it was quiet, comfortable, well-equipped and we enjoyed our stay greatly.

We loved staying here, the garden was an amazing size with lots of furniture. The house was a great size too as we had 6 of us stay, a baby and 2 dogs too. We didn't feel like we were living on top of each other. Both showers were really powerful as well. The only critic was the aga, we found it too difficult to cook for us all on it. It would be nice to have a normal oven too as it would make it easier with so many people.

What a great place to go to! This place definitely turn out to be a highlight of our trip: Cotswolds is beautiful, but when you stay in a cottage like this and in a quiet village like Marshfield, it certainly makes it a lot more special, more personal if you like.
Some essential housekeeping bits: 1 bath and toilet are in the bathroom upstairs, together with all 3 bedrooms. On the ground floor, there is a toilet in the utility room - saves you that trip upstairs, especially when you are in the kitchen. Finally, there is a shower and toilet in a small garden house outside (!). Handy when having barbeques/yoga sessions, but unlikely to be used before going to bed in the main house, for instance.
The entire property is very well looked after, and even if you find anything missing/not working – everything will be sorted.
AGA oven is worth a separate trip in the months of operation. It wasn't love from first sight, however, in the end we wanted to take it with us.
And of course: compliments and finishing touches do put a big smile on your face.

Verdict: highly recommended (with kids or without them) and would like to come back.

We really enjoyed our stay in Marshfield in this lovely property. The village is extremely pretty and the surrounding countryside is gorgeous. Bath, Bristol and Wells are close by. The house is well equipped and the beds comfy. Parking was tight and occasionally we had to park some distance away from the house - but we still managed to get a space. We would stay again.

This was our third visit to Candlemakers' Cottage and it was just as special as the last. It is fast becoming our home from home! The dog loves it and is very at home, there are also great walks nearby. We love the location - such a wonderful historic village and it's easy park and is so handy for Bath and exploring the surrounding area. It's the ideal base for us with family nearby and the chance to relax and enjoy the garden, patio and cosy interiors. The beds are so comfy and everything is well-kept and good quality. We highly recommend!

This was our third visit to Candlemakers' Cottage. We find it an ideal base to explore the area and visit relatives in neaby Box and Bath, and the owner accepts dogs. We love everything about it - the cosy AGA and wood burner, the comfy beds and living room, the fantastic garden with outdoor seating and well-tended boarders.

The owner, Louise, is very attentive and friendly and the village of Marshfield is a great location with it's pub serving food, well-stocked village shop, vintage shop and post office, and Bath stone-built historic houses it's a picturesque setting with plenty of dog-walking options. All-round great holiday home - highly recommended.

We loved our stay at Candlemakers Cottage, the south facing garden and the quirky interior are delightful. Everywhere was spotlessly clean and well equipped. It was home from home.
Our only recommendation would be to provide a bath floor mat for the floor and a non slip mat in the bath.

15 minute drive from bath and absolutely beautiful this cottage couldn’t have been more perfect. 2 very spacious rooms and one other spare room that another couple could have stayed in plus an enormous downstairs and garden made this the perfect place to stay. Beautiful village nearby and lovely and accommodating hosts who left dog ice cream for the dog. 5 stars.
