Upper End House is a stylish contemporary home offering spacious accommodation just a few miles from beautiful Burford and a five minute walk from the charming village of Shipton-under-Wychwood, with three great village pubs and a well-stocked local village store with post office.

Beautiful home, great location

We arrived at Upper End after two weeks of travelling in luxury hotels so I wasn't sure how we would feel after being spoilt from serviced environments. Any reservations were quickly discarded! The house was everything and more we could ask for. Homely, restful, clean and located in a rural spot where the birds sing but 5 mins from multiple towns including Burford which has many shops, restaurants and a coop for our grocery needs. The welcome eggs, milk and small supplies were greatly appreciated after 11hrs of travel that day. Our family of 5 couldn't have felt more rested and relaxed. We spent many mornings and afternoons by the fire after a day exploring the Cotswolds. The toys and books were a delightful touch to our country retreat.
Upper End house left a warm feeling in all our hearts and should we be lucky enough to return we would book Upper End again without a second thought. Thank you so much.

House was located in peaceful lane, lovely countryside views. It was very clean, very homely, we all wanted to stay longer. Garden was safe for the children. It does seem a lot of money but we had such a wonderful long weekend it was worth it and I would definitely book again

An excellent property, very comfortable, with everything you could need, and cleaned to a high standard. A fabulous house for enjoyed by four girlfriends on a pre Christmas break in the Cotswolds. Would definite recommend.

We found Upper end House tucked down a lane and having ample parking overlooking fields. The house is atrractive with a pretty established garden and seating. Inside the house is well appointed and stylish. the living room is very comfortable and invites relaxation. We found all that we needed in terms of kitchen utensils to prepare meals and once used to the induction system with hob and oven, were happy cooking and eating there together. The beds were very comfortable and the bedding good quality. The bathroom was lovely and appreciated the roll top bath. We would perhaps have appreciated a cloakroom downstairs but it didnt deter from our enjoyment of our stay in this property. The cleanliness and attention to detail were greatly appreciated.

First impressions count a lot and those of Upper End House were disappointing.
The drive way to the parking area was overhung with large, vicious brambles and despite various manoeuvres and vehicle positioning during the week, our car was scratched every time we went out.
Things didn’t improve at the three-car parking area, annoyingly so because just beyond it was a vision of manicured perfection belonging to the last two houses in the cul de sac. Our parking area was uneven and weed strewn and adorned with various unkempt wheelie bins and boxes and a dilapidated plastic store shed.
The “path” from parking area to property garden gate was similarly unloved, a sunken paved walk way bounded by non matching retaining boards. Worryingly, I found a 4” galvanised nail, presumably from this slapdash construction, among the gravel and weed area where the cars were parked and fretted week long over finding another in a tyre. More overhanging vegetation path-side required a crablike progression to exit the area if all 3 cars were present.
Alas, no improvement on entering the garden either. The gate wouldn’t fully open due to more overhanging vegetation, this time of the horticultural type. The challenged gate meant only the left hand side of the garden path, with it’s gravelled edging, was accessible. Not only was this frustrating when negotiating with suitcases, it also meant that one foot was inevitably in the gravel and collecting accumulated detritus.
When clear of this latest hazard things still weren’t as good as they should have been. The path, and the steps up in particular, were unswept and dirty.
So when finally entering the house, footwear was not at its cleanest, hence the signs requesting removal of shoes. This may be a splendid sentiment but when 7 pairs of shoes arrive in the small lobby/utility room it was downright galling there was no where to place/store them - and most of our party had two or even three pairs. Having all run the gambit of the parking area, the path and the steps dirt and grit cascaded off our shoe mountain in avalanches. Remember too that the bins were the other side of the parking area so there was a great deal of traffic over this dirty path and into the house.
A solution to this could have been to use the front door and much larger hallway, but for reasons unexplained there was an embargo on the front door. The door was locked. No keys or explanations were provided. As well as creating the havoc in the utility room, this action seriously limited options in the event of a fire.
The house itself was immaculately clean and tidy and sumptuously equipped with an amazing amount of space. The equipment and furnishing were all high-end, new and in perfect working order. Instructions for the use of everything in the house were copious and clear, as was the tourist information folder. The internals were far superior to the outside and gave the impression somebody loved it if not the garden. However…
small niggles and imperfections started to develop, mainly because of the kitchen/diner chairs!
The room was long and narrow and the chairs’ design incorporated legs that extended unnecessarily far out. There wasn’t enough space between chair and wall and trips over the legs became a “standing” joke.
The dining table ceiling light was not central over the table, causing several head impacts for those getting up from the table on the wrong side. The breakfast bar lights hung down ridiculously far and were so bright we couldn’t use them. There was so many gangs of light switches in this area it was impossible to switch on any light with certainty. The hob was 4m from the double oven (*) and the top oven so high we had to stand on a chair to read the settings. * A large space, but socked feet were dragging the dirt from shoe mountain into the area and this was spread even further by the cook of the day. Possibly for covid reasons (?) there was no oven glove in an otherwise brilliantly equipped kitchen and this caused immense problems. Why couldn’t we have been told? The broom was one of those that didn’t seem to work well. However many times we swept the place there always seemed to be dirt left. In desperation we resorted to the vacuum, a Miele no less. But the bag was full and it too failed to pick up. There was no replacement bags for it - why? We eventually painstakingly emptied the bag (they’re not designed to be reused) in a stubborn attempt not to be beaten.
Upstairs, was another conundrum. The master suite was a large room with a part sloping ceiling. But there was plenty of room. Why then put the bed under the part that sloped? It meant more crab-like motions to get into it. Another head injury waiting to happen. And with all that space, where was the en suite? Under the other part of the sloping ceiling! And this was so unnecessarily small. It was tiny. A 6 footer could only stand upright in half of it and it was impossible to avoid a collision with the small glass shelf over the basin. More head injuries. A weight/size restriction notice wasn’t noticed but there must have been one for the minute shower cubicle.
All the beds were smartly dressed in gleaming, crispy white bed linen with quality pillows, but they had winter duvets on. Again top of the range stuff but it was August! Why on earth would they do that?

We would have dearly loved to discuss these things with Cotswold Hideaways and maybe sort some of the frustrations that built during our week stay but we heard nothing from them. We were disappointed in them. No courtesy call, no popping in while passing. No professional care. Nothing.
They were so very good on contacting us when the balance was due too!

Overall very happy with our stay. Some minor niggles with squeaking doors and such, and we needed summer duvets to be brought to the property as winter ones in summer aren’t a great idea, but overall quite happy.

The perfect house!

From the minute we arrived at Upper End House to the minute we left, we had the most fabulous time. The house was perfect for us, there was literally nothing we needed that wasn't provided and the house has been put together thoughtfully and a lot of love. We took care of it like it was our own. The house is well planned out, the kitchen diner was perfect for gathering the family whilst dinner was prepared and we enjoyed sitting in the living room playing quizzes of an evening, as there was plenty of room for all of us (7 in total). My little boy was delighted with the toy box and his toys didn't get touched all week! The house was well placed for travelling around the Cotswolds, we actually went to the Cotswold Wildlife Park, Blenheim Palace and Chedworth Roman Villa, which were great, as well as visiting Burford and some of the surrounding villages. It's such a beautiful part of the country! We made the most of the garden as we had lovely weather. Our only regret is that we didn't book for longer. I can't recommend this beautiful house enough. Thank you x
