Horsehill Cottage is located in its own magical woodland setting on the edge of the pretty village of Stoke Abbot near Beaminster and can comfortably accommodate up to six guests.

Needs a little TLC

We were looking forward to a relaxing holiday with family and unfortunately there were a few things that were disappointing to us. The outside of the property did not look like the pictures online - it wasn’t well-maintained and as a result we were not able to use the outdoor space as it wasn’t safe for the children. The blinds in the bedroom with the on-suite were faulty and the duvet cover was too small for the duvet, which meant there was a huge lump of duvet gathered at one end and therefore uncomfortable for sleeping. The handheld shower was difficult to manage as it was too powerful and wouldn’t stay still in the holder, instead shooting water at your face at full force while you try to wash yourself.

There was a plumbing problem which the owner kindly sorted the day we called but the pipes blocked up again the next day and probably needs a proper fix as water still didn’t drain well from the kitchen sink. The main fridge never worked throughout our trip and the small one in the kitchen wasn’t adequate to store food and drink for 6 of us, which meant more frequent trips to the shop and inability to have chilled drinks. We were refunded £100 but paying over £1800 was definitely too much in this case.

The property is in a beautiful location and with some maintenance and attention to detail, would be an ideal rental property.

A tranquil, gorgeous, secluded old cottage. Very comfortable with pretty much everything you could wish for. Lovely welcome package of tea, coffee, milk, sugar, biscuits, cake, bottle of wine and fresh flowers. The location is stunning, Stoke Abbott is beautiful. The garden is natural & wild. The ford is ......... "interesting" to traverse lol the only one I've come across that is actually on a bend of a single track lane with a bit of a chunk missing but it's not deep and as long as you take the right line across, it's fine. Fantastic place to stargaze, I actually saw a brilliant meteor from the Perseids shower whilst there. The perfect place to press pause on life and recharge. Would I return? ...... Absolutely!

I stayed for a week in April with family and a dog. I know the area well and found the location of the cottage excellent as near the lovely village of Stoke Abbott, the small town of Beaminster with all it offers and with the coast is in easy reach. The walking from the cottage in the surrounding hills is fantastic and the village and pub are in easy reach through the wood, which was filled with bluebells during our stay.
The cottage has been renovated to a high standard and while it looks rustic ,the living area has a fabulous stone floor with underfloor heating and a woodburner for cooler evenings. The kitchen and bathrooms are of a similarly high quality . There is plentiful heating and hot water. The bedrooms are pleasingly spacious.
The furnishings, though slightly quirky, are good and the beds and bedding of good quality. Fabulous art work especially in the living area.
The kitchen is very well equipped but we did find the woodburning Esse stove rather difficult. There is a small separate electric
cooker but this is not really adequate for cooking for a family. I suggest a replacement electric range cooker would be ideal.
The outside area is very extensive and wild. This is lovely but it would be nice to have better outdoor furniture at the front of the house capable of seating the whole party for cups of tea and outdoor lunches.
I would definitely stay here again and hopefully will do.

The cottage was just beautiful, my 2 boys had the best time exploring the garden and playing by the river. Great base to explore Dorset and the Jurassic Coast. Some lovely walks from the cottage into the local village and round the countryside too which was a bonus. All in all we had fantastic week and I genuinely cannot fault it!

We had a wonderful time at Horsehill Cottage over the festive season. The cottage was cosy and well equipped with underfloor heating throughout the ground floor. The decor and finish of the cottage is of a high standard and made very comfortable with mattress toppers, squishy sofas and log fire. Any query we had to was dealt with promptly. We particularly enjoyed the peace and quiet of its location and would highly recommend.

The cottage is peaceful and cosy, with a lovely welcoming hamper, thank you. We were blessed with a beautiful week of sunny warm weather. Sadly we did feel improvements are needed though. We were happy to pay for a larger property because we like space but we didn’t feel the condition warranted the current charge. Other reviews we’d read also picked up on our thoughts, but as yet these improvements haven’t been addressed.
Basically clean however, very dusty with fluff under the beds. The oven needs a thorough clean, also around the taps in the bathrooms needed more attention, including window cills and bedside lights! The heating worked downstairs but lack of instructions meant we couldn’t get the main bathroom towel rail to work or upstairs radiators.
The en-suite needs a shelf for toiletries, and better door hooks for towels. The shower heads need replacing or descaling. Mouldy ceiling! Generally the property needs better maintenance, painting inside and out, also the garden is too large for a holiday home, it was too unruly for us to enjoy.
You ask if we would recommend, I’ll answer ‘no’ however if the owners take note of our thoughts and others, then it would be a ‘yes’

We enjoyed our stay in Horsehill Cottage.
Lovely quiet location next to woods & stream. Very comfortable accommodation with excellent facilities. Clean & well maintained.
Good base for exploring Dorset & 20-30 minute drive to the sea.
We would suggest providing 2 front door keys which would have been useful with 6 guests & maybe trimming of the lane to reach the property as this is very narrow & overgrown.
I would recommend the property.

For anyone seeking peace and quiet in a beautiful area the location of Horsehill Cottage is great.
There are a number of ways in which a stay there could be improved.
As a very old building the windows are small. However the lack of light inside is made worse by roman blinds on all the windows which even when raised obscure the top part of the window. We often needed to have lights
on in the daytime.

Some decent garden furniture is needed, located in the areas of lawn which do get some sun.

The grounds are full of invasive species , mainly Himalayan Balsam which prevents local flora from growing.
There are very few paths so that much of the grounds is inaccessible.

We had a lovely week in mixed weather and enjoyed the walks with our dogs from the door. The house is well planned and spacious with high quality oak furniture and finishes. The modern heating and hot water were excellent though not really tested in July!
The extensive wild garden was a joy and the boot room/utility very handy with extra fridge space and washing machines etc.
Not so good was the mattress arrangement in the main bedroom and the lack of any surfaces for toiletries in the en-suite. A couple more mid size mugs in the kitchen would be good too but apart from these small niggles, the house was really comfortable and enjoyable for us all. Thank you.
Oh and on the wish list - a second shower in the spacious downstairs loo would be fab. !
Thanks again. We would definitely book this one again.

Beautiful location and lovely property in easy reach of great days out and the coast.
Our excitement of arrival was sadly dampened by our young children trampling through dog poo left in the garden and discovering a broken window handle in the children’s room that made it a very unsafe room to use. Thankfully it was easy to reach the caretaker on WhatsApp, and window was made secure before bedtime.
Charming garden, though a bit too overgrown to use with little ones. We really loved wading in the ford at the entrance to the property!

We were looking forward to a comfortable and relaxing stay at Horsehill Cottage, but unfortunately for us this was not the case. We found the accommodation quite rustic and not “Covid clean”. The fenced in “garden” area was not lawned, mostly bare earth, not dog friendly and was full of poisonous weeds, and we found some broken glass. We therefore could not let our dogs out into this area unattended. The heating came on at odd times and the cottage was very cold in the mornings. We were unable to change heating/water settings as there were no user instructions. The lounge chairs and beds were uncomfortable. Windows and doors were draughty, some didn't have proper handles, and external doors had poor security. The en-suite bar heater wasn't working. The en-suite did not have shelves, storage provision or a towel rail. We were generally disappointed by Horsehill Cottage.
