The Lady Maxwell Room is integrated into the rich history of Buittle Castle. Named after Lady Maxwell, the room is appointed in the Gothic Revival and Arts and Crafts styles. Lady Maxwell was a descendant of the medieval resident of Buittle Castle, Lady Devorguilla of Galloway, and was a great supporter of the Arts and Crafts movement and aided in the founding of the National Trust for Scotland.

Arriving in the dark, we found Tobias waiting for us on site and due to the pouring rain we quickly made our way to our room.
The room was spacious with a log burning stove which although there was wood we had no firestarting equipment to light it. That would've been a nice touch as the night got colder and the one radiator wasn't enough to heat the whole room.
Bed was very comfortable and we had a great night's sleep.
Bathroom was clean with ample toilet roll and hand soap.
Main door could've used a mat to mop up the dirt and rain from our feet on entry and a couple of coat hooks behind the door for wet jackets.
Tobias, really looked after us with silver service coffee once we had settled in.
Choice for breakfast was excellent the produce was local and a perfect Gluten Free breakfast was available and tasty.
Once the day light arrived we were surrounded by beautiful grounds and a lovely sunken garden.
We would definitely return.

Excellent stay at this quirky venue and attentive service provided by Tobias.

An excellent experience on both occasions. Quirky experience in rooms that are full of character. Enjoyable breakfast experience in the Great Hall and exceptional, attentive service provided by Tobias.

We only stayed in the Lady Maxwell room for one night but would recommend it. The dog-friendly and spacious room had everything we needed. The booklet in the room explaining the history of Buittle Castle was an interesting read. Breakfast was delicious and it was a treat to get to eat in the historic great hall. The grounds are beautiful and the area was very peaceful.

A step back in time I was on a business trip and the experience and surroundings were truly medieval atmosphere very cosy room everything you need except television although we are going back in time so we didn’t need one Tobias ushered us to the grand hall for dinner which we had pre booked we met a lovely group of visitors from USA and we took a walk beside the river bliss we didn’t have time to do the tour but will on our next visit lovely breakfast cooked by owner James who shared his story of how he became the owner with cousin Tobias if the castle can’t wait to return Mandy barr

We loved this little guest house.

The location was beautiful. Our room was small but very quaint with lovely furniture and decor. We were able to walk around the grounds which included beautiful gardens (with peacocks), mature trees, a riverside path and of course the beautiful castle (where the owners live) and courtyard.

Dinner and breakfast were served in the hall at great big table making us feel like Lord and Lady of the manor!!!

A great stop off place on the way up to the Scottish islands too.

Although the accommodation is not in the castle, the surroundings and gardens are idyllic and very peaceful.
Rooms are comfortable, fantastic beds and warm doonas for a good nights sleep.
Delicious breakfasts and friendly service.
Such an interesting history and areas to explore. Short drive to Dalbeattie for good pub meals at Kings Arm and The Birchtree.
Maybe more detailed instructions on actual location, on website or arrival email, could help.
Great stay.

Thank-you so much for the lovely review, and I am glad that you enjoyed your stay so much. I will take a look at the directions and see if it can be made clearer- most of our guests find us without a problem, but our postcode does cover a wider area, so will maybe add the 'WhatThreeWords' address too. Just to clarify one point for potential future guests- the whole complex of buildings is classically referred to as the 'Castle', the B&B rooms are in a wing off the tower, but are very much 'within the castle' as a complex, and accessed from the castle courtyard.

A stay at Buittle castle was a very simple but special experience. The owners of the property are very warm and welcoming and hospitable. The area and surroundings beautiful and very interesting to read the history relating to the castle.
Very much enjoyed the meal in the great hall, use of the hot tub and entrance to the chapel. If you're after a grand affair from a traditional castle then this is not for you. If you want a peaceful escape then I would recommend. I personally will be back ❤️

This was our third visit to Buittle Castle and it was wonderful. Food was delicious and loved having the log burner in our room. Buittle is in a good location close to Kirkcudbright & Rockcliffe which are well worth a visit. Tobias & James were great hosts, thanks again for a special couple of days.

If you are looking for a bed & breakfast stay that is just a bit different Buittle Castle is the place to go. We were greeted on arrival and shown to our room which was comfortable and had the benefit of a log fire with a good supply of logs to keep it going till bedtime. Breakfast was served in our room at a prearranged time and was first class. Delicious. The history of the place is amazing and the grounds were perfect for walking our dog. A very pleasant stay.

Overall the short visit was fully rewarding although there were a couple of concerns. Firstly, the door to the Lady Maxwell room was difficult to open and required considerable strength. Had the occupant been of frail stature then he/she would have been enclosed without a telephone to ring for help.

Secondly, the hot tub was great but although we may have missed it in the dark a light above the tub may be useful.

The visit in general was great and managed by both James and Tobias with enthusiasm and consideration. Will plan to return in the near future.

Buittle Castle is a highly charming place and a perfect base from where to explore the area. The castle's sunken garden (with friendly local peacock), the hosts' attentiveness, and the delicious breakfast were all highlights of our stay. Recommended!

Buittle Castle is an amazing place to stay! The castle and grounds are stunning and the location is very convenient for all that Dumfries and Galloway has to offer. The rooms are cosy, comfortable and well appointed and the substantial breakfast is delicious. What makes this place truly special though are the people. Tim and Tobias are both wonderful hosts. They offer friendly, professional service where nothing is too much trouble and you are instantly made to feel at home. Having stayed at Buittle Castle a number of times now, there is nowhere else in Dumfries and Galloway that we would even consider staying. For us, this is as perfect as it gets!

We loved this place. If you like historic, characterful buildings you will too. The setting by the river is lovely. The castle buildings and gardens are attractive and being lovingly restored. Our room was as advertised; tons of character and really beautifully presented. It was also clean, warm and comfortable. We would have preferred tea and coffee making facilities in the room - but it is served in style upon request. The service is friendly but unobtrusive. The guys have real style. The breakfast was cooked to order and was delicious. We really liked that the guys clearly love their family home and are putting a lot of thought into bringing back to its former glory, and making it a great place to stay. Would recommend.
