The Old Workshop

The Old Workshop is one of four converted outbuildings of Torr Vale Mill. From the mill yard, step through a door and climb the wooden stairs up to the first floor. You emerge into a stunning open plan room that merges contemporary furnishings with the original stone walls of an 18th century mill workshop. Then you look up and marvel at the old drive-belt wheels running through the open roof beams and you are instantly reminded of the incredible heritage of this unique building. An eclectic mix of furniture, fixtures and fittings adorn the open plan living area, whilst the three spacious bedrooms, one of which opens out to a gravelled terrace with views down to the river, and well-appointed bathrooms off the same floor corridor.

Would recommend for families and friends. Brilliant location, and nice and warm. Great that it is above a cheese, wine and beer shop and opposite a lovely bar!

Had an amazing stay over the Christmas period with friends and family. Would recommend the mill for its location and picture surroundings. It finished to a high standard and the customer service second to none.

We really enjoyed our stay. We've scored lower on value for money - not because it's not a lovely place to stay - but would have expected a few more amenities given the cost - eg kitchen essentials, and we were without a dvd player for our stay. This is the second time we've stayed at the Old Workshop and it is a lovely peaceful play to visit - on this trip we went to the chippy and had facials at the Hub - both of which were great.

This is the 4th straight year we have been back as a group, and this time being a larger group we booked The Old Workshop – I think this is the best one of their properties we have stayed in (although we've not experienced The Lean-To yet) – layout and decor is amazing, and the outside table and mini courtyard by the river is the icing on the cake.

Accommodation was very roomy and comfortable and the open plan area was great for our family. The kitchen is well equipped
We appreciated the welcome basket of jams , milk , coffee etc. It was also great that Rob was on hand to answer any questions we had about how things worked etc .

Overall, a very pleasant stay. A little more rustic than expected but very clean. It would have been good to know beforehand that we needed to take shower gel and shampoo, maybe I missed that bit of information. A lovely outside seating area which I guess in summer would be better cleaned and maintained, enjoyed non the less. Some beds a bit squeaky, ok if you're not a fidget or a light sleeper.
We were there for a wedding so ideal place to stay. Beautiful surroundings.

We had such a lovely stay in The Old Workshop, it was so spacious yet had such a cosy feel. It had everything we needed and was well presented. We stayed as a reunion with friends over New Years and it was the ideal space to relax all together. Shops and restaurants very close by and a lovely walk across the millennium walkway.

Great space, location and very well equipped. We all slept well and the building is very cool in this extreme heat we’ve had which was great for everyone but especially the little one. We drove to the Heights of Abraham which was a great trip too- one hour away but plenty of other nice locations if that might have been too far. Lovely place to call home for the week.

Lovely accommodation in beautiful setting. It had everything we needed. Beautiful walks on the doorstep. The added bonus of The Shrub pub and restaurant on the door step was also lovely as we had the sun all weekend to sit overlooking the river in the beer garden. Town centre is also a 10 minute walk away for pubs shops and take aways.

It’s a nice place to stay with great customer service. Unfortunately not during the winter. The windows and front door need to be reconditioned ( the front door had holes that you could see outside). This caused to be cold and windy inside. Would recommend if these issues are sorted.

Unique property, full of character, very clean and comfortable. It is a very interesting site on the old mill, and it was good to be able to have a tour of the mill. Spectacular location perched on rocks above the river Goyt, with the constant sound of the river and a great view of the millennium walkway. Rob the manager was very helpful. The whole area is really fascinating.

We stayed here to attend a private party taking place at the mill which was a great spacious venue for the event. It’s a beautiful setting and the cottage is wonderfully refurbished but still has a lot of the original characteristics of the mill’s past. It was spotless and the bed was so comfy! We ate at the bar opposite which had a pianist playing and taking requests, lots of fun and so handy to have steps away from the cottage. Philippa and Dan were both so helpful and welcoming. We will definitely come back and stay again!

This place really is "a hidden gem" and an oasis of tranquility. It is a stunningly beautiful location, steeped in history and with fabulous walks from the doorstep.

We loved having our morning coffees sitting up on the terrace in the woods, watching the squirrels in the trees and looking down to the river running past. Blissful!

The accommodation is spacious and comfortable and the sight of the old mill machinery in the roof space made it feel very special.

Philippa was very welcoming, and the offer of a free tour of the renovations being done on the mill was eagerly accepted and inspirational! I don't know how they find the time!

Finally, having the Shrub Club (very good food and cocktails) and the Cheese Wheel (excellent cheese and beer) within 10 steps of the door was a real treat!

We really love staying at The Old Workshop. The location is spectacular and the accommodation is quirky but very comfortable. The big squashy sofas and comfortable beds are really perfect after a day out and about. New Mills itself is not chocolate-box cute, but it's fascinating. We love exploring the criss-cross of bridges and pathways over and along the rivers and observing all the amazing industrial architecture set in the most beautiful landscape. There's loads of walks available right out of the front door, too. And a fine pint at The Rock Tavern when you get home. What's not to like?
