The Old Forge is built in the style of a "Bank Barn" - entered at one side from ground level but with 1st floor views from all the other sides. The twin-aspect windows in the lounge face South & East and provide great views of the fells, the beck and the many fabulous sunsets. Guests often refer to it as "home from home" and it’s not hard to see why... everything is "just so".

The Old Forge is one of the best self-catering places we have ever stayed in. The location is perfect with views of the rolling hills beyond. Inside you will find luxury with beautiful furniture, great bathrooms including easily accessible shower, and a matchless heating system: all with first-class green credentials. Faultless.

The Old Forge provides an excellent base for visiting Kendal and the eastern lakes. It is beautifully furnished and feels very cosy and comfortable. We have visited the estate before and would hope to return in the future.

We really enjoyed our stay in The Old Forge. The Hyning Estate is in a perfect location, on the edge of the Lakes and Dales. The cottage was clean, well equipped and comfortable with everything we needed for a short break. The setting is beautiful, with incredible views. We loved the tranquility and watching the amazing sunsets over the Howgill Fells.
Hopefully we will be back again sometime in the future!

As you will see above we have given scores of 5 for each of the questions asked. This was our second visit to The Old Forge which is an excellent property, well presented with comprehensive instructions about the cottage (and how to leave it on departure, which we carefully followed), the Estate and all the equipment provided.

Given the present circumstances, the owners, quite correctly in our opinion, were avoiding direct contact with the guests to reduce any risk of passing on Covid infections so provided details of contact with them by telephone or Email should there be any need to do so, which was re-assuring. This was made clear in the communications received before our stay.

Although only a short drive away from Kendal, the Estate is well situated in a quiet rural area on the fringe of the Lake District and it is easy to decide whether to visit quieter areas or to get involved in the hustle of the Lake District.

Overall a most enjoyable stay and a further visit is highly likely.

Instantly felt homely upon arrival.
Lovely building, full of character & rural grounds with good walking close on hand.
The hosts contacted us following our arrival to check all was well - thoughtful and unexpected.

The cottage has been very well furnished and converted to a high standard.It is located near enough to the touristy parts to enjoy but far enough out to feel the peace and quiet of the beautiful countryside.

The views from the old forge that we stayed in were wonderful to wake up to in the mornings especially when we had a dusting of snow and we kept the window open at night to hear the bubbling brook alongside which was a torrent on the first night after a surplus of rain.We regularly saw the herd of deer from the bedroom window as well.

The welcome pack was a lovely touch and added to the feeling of being up market and we’ll looked after.I would thoroughly recommend this property to anyone and would not hesitate to re book.

We have just come back from spending 5 nights away in this beautiful cottage. It really does have a home from home feel about it.
The cottage has been finished to a real high standard and everything has been well thought of. It was spotlessly clean and kitted out with everything you need and more.
The views are stunning and it was only a 15 min car journey to Kendal and we found the location great for visiting lots of other beautiful places.
I would highly recommend The Old Forge cottage and definitely intend on visiting again!

From our point of view, Jan and Richard have made the Hyning estate the best place to stay in the lake district. The high standards they set themselves and the materials they have used in the mutiple accomodations on offer are a testament to their achievement. Everything has been thought of, from the theomstatic controls in every room to the best glazing units I've ever encountered. Every detail has been considered. We will make sure that we book again as soons as we get the chance.

We're sorry that we couldn't take you round during Covid but we do have a huge number of photos of the restoration work which we'd be pleased to show you if you come again ... and you're right, we spent a small fortune on all the Triple Glazed Internorm glazing for the 8 properties and the whole project with its mix of Hi-Tech, Green and Traditional features underlines our commitment to the future of the planet and local, traditional craftsmanship. Lovely views, quiet location, it was good to hear the wildlife and to watch the hares. A very good spot to explore the Lakes and Howgill area.

Spotlessly clean, tastefully furnished and well kitted out property in a recently converted farmhouse situated in a secluded valley with glorious open views to the southern Lake District. They had done everything possible to make it Covid secure even putting all the information about the property and the local area on line. The bottle of wine and Hawkshead relish were much appreciated.
