Our recent stay on the Isle of Carna was the perfect balance of peaceful seclusion and inspiring natural beauty. Visiting with a group for meetings and to connect with nature, we found the setting ideal. The space offered ample room for everyone to gather comfortably for shared meals and discussions, yet it also provided plenty of cozy nooks for quiet, personal reflection. Carna's serene landscape and breathtaking views created an atmosphere of calm, allowing us to recharge and reconnect. It truly is a stunning, tranquil retreat—a place to unwind and be inspired by the beauty of the Scottish wilderness. Huge thanks to Allison & Andy for their commitment to Carna and for looking after us all so well!

Jayne and I had a great 5 day trip to Carna. The accommodation exceeded our expectations and the service from everyone was brilliant. No problems at all with the equipment in the cottage - it was warm, relaxing and the views from the kitchen window were just outstanding. Pity there was no otters but sea eagles might have been the reason why. The herd of rare breed cattle were very friendly and came down each day to say good morning. The Isle of Carna was a little slice of heaven. Perfect for simply closing the door on the world and enjoying the natural beauty of the world. Would definitely come back.......

Another fantastic week at Carna Cottage. This was our 6th time and it was just as enjoyable as our 1st visit. We spotted Eagles most days and even managed to photograph them ! Seals and Porpoises in the bay in front of the cottage every day. Wonderful location and a great experience would highly recommend if you are looking for something different.

We have just come back from an amazing week on the island . We were met at the jetty to load up our gear for a week on the island. We brought a couple of crates and a couple of large bags plus camping chairs and jackets. We used most of what we brought though the games and dvds were never used ,we didn't go in the lounge really as we preferred sitting in the conservatory looking at the view ,spotting wildlife or reading. There is a wooden bench outside but enjoyed taking our camping chairs down to the jetty to watch the tides or we were very fortunate with the weather and had a couple of BBQ days and sat next to it to enjoy the last of the sun. We only had a couple of midge evenings normally they came out about 8pm when the breeze dropped and we would retreat to the conservatory. We got a few mosquito bites but nother major and I did get one tick but had brought with us as advised a kit to remove it.
We took the boat out most days to explore the nearby lochs ,saw lots of seals ,heron's, twice a white taled eagle. Around 8am and 8pm we spotted otters swimming psst the cottage and were fortunate to watch two of them on the jetty playing one evening and another evening on the rocks on the beach, take binoculars if you can.
We did try to climb to the top of the island one day but found it hard going , very boggy and difficult to see the dips and crevasses in the ground ,glad we took our trek poles to support ourselves. We gave up half way!
Had such a relaxing week ,bed very comfy and slept well ,didn't want to go home when Andy came to pick us up. Will definitely return.

The most amazing place to stay with some of the best customer service. Spotlessly clean, great support with boat tuition, comfortable bed and endlessly changing views.

Some of the information on the website is out of date and would benefit from being updated.

I went for a week to the isle of Carna and had a wonderful time.
Made welcome by Alison and Andy, the curators, I went on a painting residency and made lots of new work.
What a beautiful island, rugged and without a trace of commercialism, going to Carna is a way of getting close to nature.
The only residents are nine cows with extremely gentle temperaments; they felt like a reassuring presence when I heard them around the house in the dark.
The most fascinating thing I saw was was a raven perching on the back of a cow, plucking hair until it had a beak full. I assumed they were building a nest. The weather was variable and my work showed the signs of rain but the cottage is warm and cosy with a wood burner and gas generator to keep you warm.

We had an amazing week at Carna Cottage. Andy and Harry were so helpful and welcoming on our arrival, taking us over to Carna and throughout the week when needed. The cottage was perfect for our family of three plus two dogs and had everything we needed. Being total boat novices, the tuition for using the boat for the week was brilliant and we soon got the hang of it. The wildlife did not disappoint as we saw seals, porpoises, otters and eagles! We loved every minute of our time on Carna (and exploring the area) and came away feeling that we had had a real break in a truly special place. Thank you!

We thoroughly enjoyed our re-visit to Carna after a gap of 53 years. Not a lot has changed since my uncle and aunt lived there and we visited them in the late 60s/early 70s, although the terrain is a bit rougher, perhaps because it was more heavily grazed then than it has been in more recent times. There are no footpaths and the ground is boggy in places and interspersed with tussocky grass which makes for challenging walking. That said, the peace and quiet are amazing, as are the dark skies. Plenty of bird life, including eagles, and I identified 29 species of wild flowers. Deer came down to graze on the opposite loch shore in the evenings and we saw seals and their pups on an islet in Loch Teacuis. Altogether a fabulous holiday made more enjoyable by the warm welcome from Andy.

Andy, the Manager, was very friendly and happy to tell us about the wildlife and the area. Having our own private boat was an experience we will never forget. Andy gave us a comprehensive safety talk and talked us through his sea chart, which enabled us to navigate safely and confidently around the island. When we stopped the boat’s engine to fish, we had the amazing experience of being surrounded by porpoises, every time we were on the water, with one brave porpoise swimming up to our boat then under it! We enjoyed seeing the seal colony and a Sea Eagle. The cottage was basic but comfortable and clean and we especially enjoyed sitting in the conservatory watching the wildlife when the weather wasn’t good. If you want to escape the world and live virtually off grid, this is an idyllic place to escape to.

It was like ‘6 go to Kirren Island’. Superb location for both 2-legged and 4-legged guests. We saw plenty of wildlife including eagles, deer, seals, otters, porpoises/ dolphins and frogs. Enjoyed taking part in the soil survey. Weather mixed but stayed dry when out. Enjoyed pootling in the boat with our excellent navigator and captain! Excellent training prior to going solo in the boat. Both Alison & Andy gave us a warm welcome and friendly support during our stay. Would definitely recommend and return for another stay (hopefully to get a photo of the otters).
The only improvement we would suggest is clearer directions/signage for arrival.
Thank you for the wonderful holiday!

The remoteness of the location hits you long before arriving on the island. Taking the 5 minute Corran ferry to the Ardnamurchen peninsula, the lack of mobile phone signal and miles between tiny villages along single track road sets the scene. But after being transferred to the island by boat, helped to settle in, its when the boat leaves that the tranquillity and solitude becomes reality. The cottage is homely rather than luxurious. Spotlessly clean with everything you need. Electricity is provided by solar power only so is limited to 500w (so mobile device charging only). Cooking, fridge and hot water are all gas-powered and heating is provided by a log-burner which also heats the radiators and under-floor heating. The bathroom is modern, the rest of the house has a traditional cottage feel. A large conservatory provides panoramic viewing of Loch Sunart and the surrounding hills even if the weather is bad. The addition of wifi is welcome (just turn your wifi off it you don't want it), but as there is zero mobile phone signal for miles, it's good to have for peace of mind.
Exploring the island in full will take a few visits. The summit of the island is a good trek rather than a climb and well worth the effort. Bring wellies as well as walking boots though as a lot of the island is quite boggy.
You'll spot the wildlife from the moment you arrive. During our stay we saw Sea Eagles and Golden Eagles, Hen Harriers, seals, otters, row deer (right by the cottage door early one morning!), shags nesting on the cliffs on the far side of the island and much more, and also the friendly cows.
The small self-drive boat makes the stay an adventure. An extremely stable and easy to use boat, full tuition is given and all safety, communication and navigation equipment is provided. We did several circuits of the island, a trip down Lock Teacuis and one trip back to the mainland (for the fresh fish van - Tuesdays, midday at the Salen Jetty shop car park - well worth a visit).
Apart from our trip to the fish van, we didn't feel the need to leave the island during our week's stay. The combination of solitude and relaxation and adventure was more than enough.
I can't recommend Carna highly enough, we will definitely be back.

Excellent cottage and Andy and the team are very friendly and accomodating.

Positive
- Beautiful cottage / incredible location
- Superb wildlife watching (Sea Eagles most days, the occasional otter, lots of seals)
- Use of boat
- Cosy cottage, basic amenities are sufficient

Negative
- Lack of proactivity - if you haven't visited before there are quite a few things to get your head around and there is room for improvement in providing this information up front. For example,
- How to order food from local store (explicit options for delivery vs collection).
- Need to hire a car if arriving from Fort William by train (we flagged we'd likely get a taxi and it would have been helpful to know this is not advisable based on cost and convenience etc).

4 of us stayed 3 nights to "get away from it all" and fish. Andy transported all our gear & beer onto the island and left us alone with the self drive boat. The weather was great, the isolation is great and the basic living is great. We ate mackerel and pollock we caught, and mussels from the jetty as alternatives to the food we had brought. Drunk plenty of beer, and played board games at night. No phones, no telly, no radio. You have to actually talk to other human beings. :-) Highly recommended.

Five of us (four adults and one 8 year old from New Zealand) had a wonderful time on Carna. It is peaceful, beautiful, and precious. The cottage is very comfy. We loved the fire and the windows in the kitchen that give lots of light and great views whatever the weather. We spotted otter, deer, and seals from the kitchen - how cool is that? The walk to the top of the island is well worth it (and not difficult); the views are super. We had fun exploring the shoreline, picking lots of blackberries to eat, swinging on the rope swing and making friends with the furry cows. After a through briefing from Andy we also took ourselves around the island in the boat and enjoyed seeing it from all angles.

Carna is a precious place and we enjoyed talking with Andy, sharing his knowledge and love for the island. We were made very welcome and have warm memories of our stay.

Second visit here. Once again a beautiful place to stay. Recent improvements with heating, the bathroom and changing round the bedrooms were welcome and really enhance the cottage.
Having WiFi is useful but to an extent erodes the feeling that you are having a tech free break.
One of the main reasons we love the island is being able to bring the dog and not have to worry about letting him wander in and out when he feels like it. This was a little curtailed this time by having the cows roaming free frequently around the cottage.
All in all though the stay on the island was again superb and we will be back.

This was my fifth visit to Carna island and it just gets better. The island is wonderfully wild and stacked with wildlife, the trips out in the boat are interesting and reveal more of the surrounding habitats and a sense of peacefulness just desends as soon as you walk along the pier from the launch. Bird song follows you wherever you go and you just never know what you are going to spot. The cottage facilities are comfy and adequate and it is a perfect place to bring folk of any age from my 7 year old granddaughter to my 90 year old mother, everyone can't help but enjoy the island in their own way. I am now planning my sixth visit!

A wonderful island escape, stress melts away the minute you get to the shore at Laga bay. The beds are so comfortable, views spectacular, and relaxing around the fire in the evening listening to the oystercatchers flying over the loch outside is delightful. Kids blissfully content rowing, catching crabs, dens in the woods, swinging, spotting seals and the occasional otter and eagle. Would happily recommend. Had to slowly re-enter the real world and delayed turning on my phone for a few hours when we left

This was our second stay on Carna, so we obviously like it. Having been previously, we knew just what to expect and made our preparations for the week much easier, knowing what facilities to expect in the cottage.
Our main reason for staying on Carna is the wildlife. Our first visit was late summer, our second was early summer. The difference was remarkable.
There are no true footpaths on the island, so tracks are made either by cattle or deer. The lower bracken growth made trips inland much easier and gave us better light for photographing the wild flowers, which become hidden later in the year.
The cottage had been overhauled during the winter and the minor issues from last year had all been fixed. Lounge windows shut properly and the kitchen flooring had been upgraded. The marine band radio now lives in the kitchen rather than the cow shed.
The temperature drops significantly over night. The original stone cottage is basically four rooms in a row - lounge, bedroom, bathroom, bedroom. This end bedroom can get chilly, so we lit the stove in the lounge in the evenings. This heats water for the under floor heating and warms the bedrooms and bathroom very nicely. The supplied logs light easily, but make sure Andy has left you some firelighters!
The bathroom is excelent and the LPG heated water system highly efficient.
The cooker is also LPG and works well enough to keep four of us fed. The oven struggled a bit to reach higher temperatures, probably due to the poorly fitting door. The barbeque boasts the best view you could wish for and tempts you to spend leisurely evenings outside. (Take your own charcoal)
So after two visits, would we go again? Most definitely yes!

Unique experience having the island to ourselves . Small team based at Laga were friendly , helpful and knowledgeable. Cottage was perfect for us with excellent views out to the loch . Having the boat was great fun and we enjoyed using it to go out and spot wildlife as well as travelling back over to the mainland to explore the peninsula.
The night sky was so fantastic !
The week flew by so quickly .

We were 4 mates staying in Carna Cottage for a weekend in October. We planned on fishing in the loch Saturday & Sunday, and just generally chilling "off grid".
Andy transported us and our provisions onto the island on the Friday evening and he gave us a quick tour of the cottage, then left. We expected to see him next on Monday morning when we were due to leave.
The cottage was spotlessly clean and had a modern bathroom with underfloor heating. The heating was provided by a log burner in the living room. Cooking was on LPG (propane), or the outdoor barbecue and electricity generated by solar power to a battery. Apart from the emergency radio, we were effectively cut off from "civilisation".
The weather was good on Saturday but appalling on Sunday, preventing us from going on the loch (in fact, Andy came and took the boat). Both days were very different but we had a great time and I would definitely recommend staying there.

Peace and quiet, Hen Harrier hunting outside window every day, lots of White tailed eagles and otters everywhere. Loved it that much we booked again the day we arrived home.

Generally a good experience, disappointed that the old bath bathroom fittings had not been removed when obviously new bathroom put in, but left in heap with other disgarded rubbish.
Although we understand the reason for the cattle the necessity for fences which, in order to cross, one had to scale gates or find crossing points did distract a little from the pleasure of walks, also the wieght of the cattle had turned the few paths into quagmires.
I had 3 deer ticks in 5 days which as I am used to them and understand the way to remove safely was not a problem, however the implications for Lymes disease should be highlighted to other guests.
I raised a couple of things on leaving to be told that they were probably just in the other house eg no casserole dishes, no bird books, I feel this should have been checked prior to our arrival,

I rented both Carna Cottage and Carna House for a family holiday. We were above the recommended number of people being 13 adults, 6 children and 4 dogs at the busiest time, hence comfort 'good' and not ''excellent'. The weather was perfect and midge free. We made full use of the boats and my children and their partners were out on their paddleboards (which they brought with them) nearly every day.
I first came to the island 52 years ago, and the comfort of the houses has improved vastly, but the remoteness and feeling of isolation remains the same. No phone signal, unless you climb to the top of the island, no internet, no radio or television. A newspaper is a mile on the boat then a 6 mile drive on single track roads away. You have little option other than to relax and watch out for the seals, otters and golden and sea eagles.
Andy, Alison, Barnaby and Harry at Laga Bay were brilliant. Always there to help or advise when asked, but never intruding. Andy and Alison cooked us a great meal using local produce on my wife's birthday.
A great holiday which will be long remembered. Maybe even by some of my childrens' children.

The island of Carna is absolutely unique. Here you can hire your own private island and escape to peace and serenity or have a fabulous adventure.
The cottage is warm, comfortable and well equipped sitting in a sheltered bay on the eastern side of the island. Using the island boat is great to explore Loch Teacuis.
Will be back!
