Xidong is an oriental styled cottage converted from an old stone and timber cowshed. It sleeps two people and has a hot-tub in the enclosed garden.

Loved the Japanese theme both inside and outside.
Listening to the water fountain was very relaxing as was the hot tub.
Bed & bedding very comfortable.
Everything you need in the kitchen was provided & the welcome ’hamper’ was very much appreciated.
Wet room could do with some attention & futon cushions could be updated to make this a 5/5 review.

We had a great week staying here.
The garden is fantastic to sit and enjoy the sounds of nature. It is in a remote location, but still only a short drive to local towns.
We very much enjoyed our stay and would like to return

A unique place to stay, Japanese style barn with beautiful garden and a great hot tub. The barn has been converted very well and is warm and cosy. However we had an issue with communication and found the bathroom somewhat tired. We did enjoy our stay, it is a fantastic location for exploring the area and is ideally situated in a peaceful location.

Thank you for your review, I am glad you enjoyed your stay. We are well aware that the shower/wet room needs an overhaul, which will hopefully happen this coming autumn/winter. The communication issue, was not of our doing. Integration between Cottages.com, Airbnb and Booking.com means that many of our emails do not get through to our guests and vice versa. We are taking this up with Awaze, the holding company of Cottages.com because we cannot effectively operate without some prior communication with our guests. If you are reading this and hoping to come and stay, please email me direct if you do not receive a personal email from me soon after you book.

Quiet and peaceful location. Many interesting places to visit in the area including: Ironbridge Gorge, Stokesay Castle, The Spaceguard Centre, Caer Caradoc (an ironage hillfort almost in the back garden - wondeful views from the top).
The excellent hot tub provided a great way to relax after a days activities. The bath robes provided were much appreciated.
We look forward to a return visit.

Beautiful views, serene morning coffees in the garden set to the sound of the water feature, and enough space to paint, do yoga and watch movies all in the same room.
Cottage was clean and warm. Somehow spacious and cosy.
An even better stay than the last time :)

The location is great if you're looking for quiet and rural. Not overlooked, no traffic, and very peaceful. If you're looking for castles, both large maintained ones and old ruins, then you're also in the right place. Also plenty of walking options. Nearby Ludlow also nice for shops, eating out and a wander around.

The main living area is very spacious, warm and cosy. Unique decor and full of interesting quirks. Beautiful full glass wall looking into nicely maintained private garden, with a modern hot tub and clean decked area. Well equipt throughout and nice welcome pack on arrival. Brief encounter with the hosts, who also seemed friendly.

The wet room / shower area needs some attention. Basin not fixed to wall securely, lots of dark damp nooks and crannies and stained/peeling panelling. This became distracting over the weekend. The access road, a long farm track, is also unsurfaced for the majority and very uneven. This was a challenge for a small car and we scraped the underneath of our car several times whilst trying to carefully make our way up. Lastly, there was some pet hair in the fabrics and quite a bit of dust in places. Something to be aware of if any of your party experience from asthma.

Overall, we enjoyed our stay and liked the cottage. We just felt a few small things let it down a little. But we'd not be deterred from recommending it, just be aware of some potential issues.

Thank you for your honest review. Yes, we are aware the wet room needs attention, but just at the moment, we are struggling to pay our ridiculously large electricity bills and we cannot afford to spend any more on Xidong. The track is bad at the moment due to the weather and as soon as it dries up, Peter will be dealing with the potholes and ruts. Being an old building with stone walls and wooden beams, there is a little extra dust - it is the price you pay for the aesthetic and ambience of the cottage. Dog hairs? Not so much, but if other guests let their dogs sit on the furniture, which we do not allow, but cannot prevent, it is almost impossible to vacuum up every hair. We do our best. And yes, we are quite friendly!

Lovely place, very quirky and nice size hot tub for resting weary bones after some fantastic walks.we had a brilliant relaxing time. The only thing I could say negative is the l toilet is the other side of he building and when going in the night there's only the main bedroom light to turn on waking your partner up may a sensor on the wall putting a light on downstairs would be a bonus and the road leading up to the cottage is very uneven we was in a 4x4 so no problem but wouldn't like to go up in a car

Lee from Burnley stayed at Xidong for 3 nights in February 2024

Becky replied 292 days ago
Thank you for your positive review. A sensor light is a good idea, but I suspect that guests with pets may find the light going on and off all night, which could be equally disturbing! We do supply torches for this reason... The track is bad at the moment because of the very wet weather we have been having. As soon as it dries up, Peter will be filling in the potholes. I should say that I have an Audi A1, a very small car and I get up and down the track quite safely - you just have to take it slowly and carefully. It is frustrating, I know.

What a wonderful peaceful stay surrounded by amazing scenery unfortunately the weather wasn't great so more time to relax and unwind and use the hot tub as this is a working farm the wonderful owners gave us a secure unused field to let our dog run free which he loved would return in a heart beat would highly recommend for peaceful relaxers or walkers alike

I booked this for a long weekend for my boyfriend’s birthday. I had messaged Becky prior to arrange some birthday decorations as a surprise and she was more than accommodating! The location of this cottage is perfect and away from everything it is very relaxing whilst not being too far away to do things like going out to eat or getting a food shop. We brought our dogs with us and they absolutely loved staying here. I must say the garden and the hottub were the highlight for us and we created amazing memories and will definitely be back!

We had a great much needed mid week break at Xidong. We loved the hot tub, so relaxing listening to the owls, so peaceful. Absolutely beauty of a hidden gem thank provided much needed peace and tranquility away from the stresses of modern day living...we were transported to a pristine garden(oriental styling) and hypnotised by the sound of the water fall into the pond. Thoroughly enjoyed the stay but won't tell anyone (it's our secret getaway lol). Will definitely brag about it and definitely return.Fresh bread eggs and milk were a much appreciated gesture and so tasty. Thanks again for a wonderful stay...See you soon

The location was perfect, beautiful farm and surrounding countryside. The use of the hot tub was fab and a lovely way to end the day. To make the property a 5/5 I would recommend updating the wet-room, it was smelly, damp and mouldy which made cooking in the kitchen (where it is located) a little off putting.
Perfect place for dogs and wonderful hosts. The free eggs, butter and sough dough bread were delicious.

Absolutely had the best time here. So relaxed. But make sure you do shop before you go as nearest one is few miles which didn't mind but depends what you want. We wanted something quiet and peaceful and that's exactly what we got. The hosts were great with communication. Beautiful eggs bread and milk left for us. It would be nice if a few more essentials could be left such as a little washing powder, antibacterial spray etc but it's not an issue. The shower has so much more potential as so much room to make it more like a rain shower etc, but was lovely all the same. Really had a lovely weekend and the hot tub and garden are lovely. Plenty of kitchen utensils etc salt pepper tea coffee sugar. Would go again.

We came during a short snow spell and although that made it a little slower to get to (following Becky's instructions was a must) it was just incredible to see in that way and still safe on the roads if you're slow and sensible. The space is absolutely gorgeous, inside and out, and it's bigger than it looks! We were so thrilled to have fresh eggs, milk and eggs waiting for us. Hot tub is fab (yes we used it in the snow!) and easy to use, and the garden space that it is situated in is both private and peaceful. We spent a lot of time in front of the log burner, Becky and Peter kindly left logs for us and had a lovely cosy time. Wales is much closer that we realised! So we went for dinner in Wales, and our hosts were great with recommendations. I thought the little touches such as robes and fresh flowers on the table were just lovely, very thoughtful. We were left to our privacy but when I needed any kind of help or questions answering both Becky and Peter were so helpful. We would love to come back to see it in all seasons!
Thank you again for everything.

Set against a stunning backdrop of autumnal Shropshire hills, this beautiful cottage is somehow both cosy and spacious. The structure itself is a delight- with vaulted ceiling, granite steps and archway, an intriguing use of glass in the kitchen and wetroom, magnificent windows overlooking a picturesque and peaceful garden.

Kitchen is well equipped. Bed is wonderfully comfortable. Log burner offers a luxurious level of warmth. The hot tub takes that luxury to another level. Even the journey to and from the hot tub, along the veranda and meandering stone path, is an experience.

The hosts are exceptionally warm and welcoming. I took my two cats and all three of us felt very welcome and looked after. Becky also left out some sourdough bread, eggs, and fresh butter which made for the best of breakfasts.

This place comes with just one warning- there is no phone signal nor internet signal once you reach the farm track, and the farm track is quite long and bumpy, so do make sure you've got the address right before leaving (don't be as silly as I was)! and as previous guests have mentioned- you have to patiently drive the track in first gear- but it's worth it :)

We had an amazing stay at Xidong, we wanted to be in a quiet rural location to rest and relax as this was our last holiday before our first baby arrives and Xidong was perfect. Lovely cottage with everything we needed in a great location for a day out in Ludlow and nearby castles. We really enjoyed our stay and were able to go on a few great walks with our two dogs right from the door. We would definitely recommend this cottage to friends and family.

Xidong is a lovely cottage and is as described. Ideal for a quiet break away. The kitchen is well set up with plenty of equipment. The shower was good but the shower room itself could benefit from a little love and attention. We particularly enjoyed the pond with the sound of running water and the swallows swooping down for insects and drinks. We had a lovely stay but an existing drain issue took the shine off a little. I hope this can be fixed in time for the next guests.

A beautiful place to stay, we used this as a base for a walking break for us and our 2 dogs. The welcome sourdough bread, eggs and milk were a lovely touch, and enjoyed. A very spacious accommodation for 2, with everything you could want. The hot tub was a great relief for our walking feet each day, and the sound of running water from the water feature helped relax us. I would recommend this place to any friends and family, thank you to our hosts.

Though I've been fortunate to have stayed at Xidong several times there's still that WOW moment when you step across the threshold and all your cares just fall away as you immediately relax into that special haven of peace. And the massaging jets in the hot tub worked their wonders too.

This time Stiperstones was particularly challenging: while you carefully negotiated the sharply angled rocky path, along came violent gusts that seriously destabilised you. Didn't appreciate the driver of the horse van who rode up much too close as I was backing up along the track to let him through, causing me to reverse into a low wall and damage my rear fog lamp. But Aardvark and the Ludlow Farm Shop were uplifting dependables.

Xidong had everything we could wish for, we found it to be clean, comfortable and well equipped. The garden and cottage were totally private and it was heavenly to sit out in the evening watching birds swoop down to drink from the pond.

There were any number of walks right from the cottage door and we also explored many or castle ruins, markets and small villages in the area.

We found that all the information we needed was supplied and although the owns were on hand if needed they were happy to leave us in peace. Highly recommended.

We chose xidong cottage to use as a place to escape from the world for a week and relax and celebrate our 10th wedding anniversary. We weren’t disappointed it was perfect!!
The location was idyllic and totally private away from the farm. The freshly made bread, farm eggs, butter and milk were a lovely touch.
The hot tub was amazing, especially at night lying back looking at the stars.

Overview - a beautiful little cottage. Well appointed.

Parking space outside the front door.

As you come in there is a small area with some cupboards and a freezer, washing machine and dryer. The toilet is also situated at this end of the property.

The main room is huge with windows across the entire frontage looking into the garden. Seating is a bit awkward as the main sofas are one end of the room and the TV is at the other end with a couple of chairs by it. Low dining table with wooden chairs in the middle.

Behind the wall at the far end is the kitchen which has a decent cooker, small fridge, storage cupboards. Pots, pans, etc supplied.

Then at the end is the shower room with an overhead shower. Water pressure is good and so is the heat. Not my favourite type of shower I prefer a flexible hand held bit as well but it was perfectly fine.

Bedroom is small with no storage but it is set in the roof area. Bed was not comfortable. Too hard for me. Probably fine for others. I would still come back.

The garden is a delight. Entirely private. The hot tub is set into the decking at the back of the garden. It was lovely after a day out walking or cycling and star gazing. The rest of the garden is in a Japanese theme with established bamboo, ferns, some grass at the back and a lovely pond with triple waterfall area keeping the water running. lovely to sit next to on the garden chairs. a few fish in the pong, loads of pond skaters on the surface and a continual visitation from small birds - sparrows, tits, robins.

It was lovely and quiet, the only sounds were the water and birds.

Superb views in all directions.

Peter and Becky were very friendly and helpful.

Value for money was unbeatable.

Very relaxing stay, just what is needed to get away from the world! The hot tub is brilliant to sit in and relax or star gaze on a nice evening. Some beautiful walks nearby which our dog loved! Hosts are very welcoming and happy to answer questions. We will definitely think about staying here again for our next getaway.

Thank you and your are welcome to come and stay again. Our young hens are just starting to lay now and they provide the eggs we leave; they are the most delicious, fresh and tasty eggs with the deepest yellow yolks you can get.

We enjoyed our stay at the cottage. The location is very scenic. the cottage and garden is style great. the underfloor heating was very nice and we generally found the place comfortable. The hot tub was great and we lucked out with being able to see the stars. The negatives for me were the strange smell inside when we arrived, the drains perhaps? Didn't smell nice. and the kitchen wasn't the same standard as the rest of the place. some of the glasses and cutlery was dirty and the kitchen knives were really bad quality and dangerously blunt. Also just the style of the kitchen fittings and appliances were not in keeping with the Japanese style and felt cheap. Also the photos do make it look more secluded than it actually is which is a little annoying. Overall we enjoyed our stay. The eggs and bread were appreciated.

Oh dear, I'm sorry the cottage did not completely live up to your expectations. We have made some changes since you stayed here - we no longer have the underfloor heating, but more efficient and effective electric radiators. The smell comes and goes and we do everything we can to eradicate it. The kitchen is perfectly functional and is next on our list of items to update, but we have spent a lot of time and money on other more important refurbishments - the heating for example. As for the glasses and cutlery - I can only say I am sorry; I expect I was cleaning that day and I am not as good or as thorough as our cleaners who are meticulous. The sharp (or not so sharp) knives - well - they do get a sharpen every now and then and we would have been very happy to lend you a knife sharpener; I would suggest that if you prize a sharp knife for cooking, it is a good idea to bring your own, which is what I would do! Actually it is very hard to get the lay out of the cottages clear in a photograph; it was not my intention to pretend the cottage is totally secluded - it is sufficiently secluded for most people and is not overlooked from anywhere.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Xidong. The welcome from the owners was very warm and they were around all the time if there were any problems. The only help we needed was with a couple of missing items in the house but they provided them immediately. The setting was most unusual being Japenese in style, but very comfortable and spacious. The jacuzzi was a real bonus and compensated for the somewhat changeable weather. All in all a lovely place to stay in a beautiful part of the country, with lots of good places to eat nearby.

Lovely little place, enjoyed sitting in the hot tub, nice and peaceful with no interruptions, we were left alone to enjoy ourselves which we liked. Lovely touch with having fresh milk, bread and eggs on arrival. Well stocked kitchen, clean and tidy. Lovely hot water for the nice shower. The toilet could do with modernising/cleaning, main room looked bit unloved and dusty. Garden seems a waste, water feature that was not finished and just full of leaves, not great to look out onto, a lawn would have been nicer. The hot tub made the weekend!

Thank you for your review. Your comments about the cloakroom and main room are noted; we have a little re-decorating on the list in the next couple of weeks. Some dust is the nature of the building and the fact that for some silly reason I decided to paint the furniture gloss black, which is a nightmare for our cleaner! The garden, if you read our 'news' is in the process of being rejuvenated, We have been so busy since the weather improved that I have had to take two full weeks out of our bookings so that Peter can get in to finish the water feature. When it is finished, it will be wonderful and a lot better than a plain green lawn!

Our second visit to this peaceful place, designed in a Japanese style. Swallows were nesting in the eaves, and we heard a cuckoo amongst al the lovely countryside sounds. It’s somewhere to wind down and take things slowly. Waking to bird song, a lovely walk with beautiful views, home to a glass of wine in the hot tub, followed by a simple supper and bed. Bliss.

Beautiful cottage with plenty of space and light, fantastically comfortable bed, wonderful hot tub. Lovely touches eg flowers, local eggs, home made bread on arrival; owners very discreet but available if needed.
Such a peaceful location - birdsong from dawn to dusk and plenty of walks from the door with spring flowers galore in hedgerows.
Highly recommended for a get away from it all for two.

We chose Xidong on the basis of it's location, the fact it allowed pets and, that it had a hot tub. It is a very nice spacious property which 18 years ago when it was first completed would I am sure been fabulously state of the art.

It is still an amazingly peaceful and, relaxing place to stay however, it is now showing its age and, could really do with a bit of spit and, polish.
Positives - fabulously quiet and, private, the accommodation is spacious and, well equipped. The welcome pack of bread, eggs and, milk was a very nice touch - the eggs were amazingly tasty.

The towels and, bathrobes supplied were a very nice touch although we never did find the promised slippers.

Negatives - the toilet and, bathroom are separate, the toilet is at the opposite end of the property to the bedroom - there is no en suite, managing a tricky set of stairs in the dark to go to the toilet is difficult to say the least - mind that last step!
The roof light in the bedroom is very nice however, the makeshift curtain does not cover all of the window, expect to be woken by the light as soon as dawn breaks.
There is very little in the way of storage for clothes, not that this mattered to us for our short stay, it may be worth considering if staying for longer.
The kitchen is well equipped with almost everything you need to make a meal, the oven however has long since lost it's temperature graduations making cooking anything without either under doing it or, burning it quite difficult.
The main living accomodation is a fabulous space, allegedly underfloor heated although I never felt any evidence of this, there were a confusing myriad of switches / controls, some labelled do not touch, others in the off position, turning them on made no difference. On top of this we ran out of hot water on the last night - luckily just as we had completed showering.
The hot tub is fabulous and, is one of the things we went for however, it is at the opposite side of the garden, with no seating adjacent to it and, with no where to put clothes / towels. It is also recessed into the (rotten in places) decking and, can be quite difficult to access, once in however it is gorgeous.
The garden, well what can one say? I can see what it was and, judging by some of the pictures used they must be quite old as, it was really quite disappointing, an empty pond with rubbish in the bottom of it, dead / decaying trees - including the acer in the pictures and, debris from the bamboo everywhere - which actually proved to be a blessing as I used it for kindling to light the log burner. As mentioned earlier the decking is rotten in places and, the path to the hot tub is difficult to negotiate in bare feet.
Despite the negatives we made the most of our stay visiting Ludlow, Knighton and, Leintwardine, we also enjoyed walks on the paths adjacent to the cottage the views and, countryside are amazing and, a climb of the nearby Caer Caradoc to see the hill fort is well worth the effort. Overall we enjoyed our stay and, despite the minor issues we really enjoyed our time in Xidong. It is worth bearing in mind that, the cottages are really quite isolated and, that there is nowhere to "nip out to" should you forget anything. This of course may be what you go for (we did) but for others, the well documented lack of phone signal and, quite difficult to negotiate local road network may be an issue.

Bill from Loughborough stayed at Xidong for 3 nights in August 2018

Becky replied more than 1 year ago
Thank you for your very honest review, much of which is true. There are some issues I would like to address however. Firstly, we are not intending the cottage to be ‘state of the art’ and we are very aware of the tiredness of some areas of the cottage. Time, finances and health have all contributed to this fact. As you can see from reading our website, we have plans currently in motion to revamp the garden and to replace some of the decking around the hot-tub. Many of the ‘negatives’ our guest mentioned are quirks of the building; where you lose on clothes storage and no en-suite, you gain in the beautiful spacious living area and tranquil feeling of the cottage. Yes, the garden is in a sorry state; we had just had 2 months of drought and the acer had suffered as had the beautiful hydrangea. The beauty of the countryside around is more than a match for a tiny little scruffy garden waiting to be restored! As to the heating; it is summer and the heating has been turned off. There is a handy little wood-burning stove and wood supplied for chillier evenings. We could have supplied slippers if asked. The hot water is primarily solar heated with an immersion heater as back-up. The thermostat will cut out as a safety precaution to avoid the water getting too hot and scalding our guests. If you come to Xidong looking for ‘pristine’, ‘perfect’ and ‘state of the art’, you will be disappointed. We aim to provide peace, tranquillity and something a little different and quirky, which is a work in progress and alive with possibilities.

Loved it here (again) - beautiful weather all week (again!) - great location too!
We went on a walk around the fields following the public footpaths on the map provided at Xidong which had fab views of the surrounding areas!! The beach is an hour and a half away which was a great day out, visited Ludlow Castle which is less than an hour away and we went to Hampton Court Castle which we highly recommend! Loved it there!
Short distance from Knighton where the shops are and a nice pub too and had a nice walk up the river here also.
We will be back.

Xidong has to be experienced. With its open, calm, tranquil feel throughout. Our three nights stay consisted of looking up at the beautiful old beams, taking in the space which surrounded us inside and out. Very peaceful and relaxing. Location is just Heaven Would recommend friends and family with another visit from ourselves at somepoint. The only criticism we both had was we felt that the log burner was to small for such a large room plus needed a little TLC in places. Would be a great benefit to this amazing getaway.

We had a very nice stay at Xidong over a pre-Valentines weekend. The cottage was clean and tidy upon arrival but was on the chilly side with the outside air temperature plummeting in the snow showers. We noted that the heating controller was locked out and only managed to get just-suitable warmth from the convection heaters and wood-burner fire being on constantly. The highlight for us was being in the hot tub during the night-time snow showers. Overall we enjoyed our visit.

I am glad you generally enjoyed your stay. The heating was unfortunate; as you said, it was a very cold weekend and there had been no-one staying in the cottage during the week, when the heating was switched off and although we do turn the heating on again on Thursday evening, the nature of the system (not our choice) means that the floor takes a long time to heat up. Something for us to bear in mind the next time it has been switched off. The heating controls are deliberately locked, but there is limited adjustment for visitors. I should point out however that it is unlikely to make any difference until 24 hours later. As usual, it is impossible to correct any problems after our guests have left (for those guests anyway) so, if you have any problems at all, it is vital to come and tell us and we will do what we can to sort them out.

Booked this for my birthday and it was a fantastic weekend away! The location was beautiful surrounded by mountains which made it so peaceful- recommend walking up Caer caradoc as the views at the top are stunning! The cottage was clean and had everything we needed. The only suggestion would oven gloves. We loved the homemade bread, milk, butter and eggs on arrival- lovely touch! The hot tub is a lovely addition to the cottage as well and we made good use of it especially sat under the stars (even if a little chilly). Was so nice to get away from civilisation, WiFi and signal and have some proper down time. Thank you so much to Becky and Peter!!

Love love loved our stay in Xidong Cottage. The remote location was wonderful to get away from it all. The cottage itself is beautiful and very well equipped. The lovely welcoming touches of local milk, eggs, butter and fresh bread was so thoughtful and gratefully received.
We took advantage of the private hot tub which was a perfect addition to our stay, star gazing in it at night was fantastic.
We used the supplied dvds and the games and the cottage was spot on for a cosy quiet weekend away. Couldn’t recommend it more! We will be returning for sure !
Thank you

Had a fantastic few days away with my son. It was great to get away from everything and actually talk to each other. The hot tub was just the best and could have stayed in there for hours. The pond is under refurbishment but that was great for us as I was worried about the dogs jumping in.
Only minor thing I would change is maybe a comfy sofa or even a sofa bed so it could fit more in as there is definitely the room.
We will definitely be back xx

What an absolute bargain! The place itself was very spacious, comprising of a large living room and a large well equipped kitchen on the bottom floor. The wet room is connected to the kitchen and was lovely. A set of stairs lead up to the snug bedroom from the living room. All in all it was very well managed by Becky and a great value for money. Had a wonderful stay at Xidong over the weekend! Its surroundings are breathtaking and you can literally walk in any direction from the front door! To say it was the most peaceful place i've ever been to was an understatement! I would definitely come back again and again... Me and my boyfriend absolutely loved every minute of it! What could they do to improve - not much really - maybe fix the blind in the bedroom as it lets light in in the morning... but other than that nothing! Summing up our stay - fabulous, relaxing and beautiful! Tim and Abby xx

Thank you Abby and Tim, I am glad you found it so peaceful, it can be quite noisy at times with ewes and lambs calling to each other, the birds - particularly the crows and the cockerel first thing, the dogs occasionally barking and... well, that's it really! Fixed the blind; thank you for mentioning it. We'll be very pleased to have you back again, you are welcome.

We stayed at Xidong last weekend and what a fantastic surprise. Daffodils and snowdrops lining the drive up to the farmhouse which nestles in a beautiful valley. Nothing but birdsong, peace and quiet and absolutely no wifi or mobile signal at all - bliss. Becky and Peter are very relaxed hosts and any problems are dealt with straight away. Lovely away from it all cottage just a hop away from the quaint village of Bucknell. We can't fault this place even though there was some work being done on the ornamental garden. The walks were sometimes challenging but the scenery was fantastic. Storm Doris couldn't even dampen our enjoyment. Ludlow and Bishops Castle are well worth a visit and are just a short drive away. Peter & Becky were unobtrusive but always on hand if you needed them. The welcome pack was a lovely touch. Thank you both....we will return

Thank you for your lovely review. There is still some work to be done on the 'wildlife' garden! In fact the pond has completely given up being a pond for now as it is quite dry!

This was our second stay in Xidong cottage and it was just as good as we remembered. No mobile phone signals, no wi-fi just peace and quiet in a beautiful setting.

The cottage has everything you need, including logs for the fire, and the welcome gift of fresh (still warm) bread, milk, eggs and flowers was lovely.

The plans for the garden sound amazing and we can't wait to return and see the results.

Thank you for your kind review. I am sorry I have not posted a reply before now - it takes time for me to get around to it. If you want to see results in the garden, I think you may have to wait a little while... Peter has not been well and other things have taken precedence. See the news page for more...

Reluctant to write reviews for this place as we love it so much we want to keep it a secret! The quirky little extras is what makes this place such a gem and we will be back again for sure.
This time we took our baby who along with the 2 dogs had a great time!!
So much to explore and the pubs are brilliant and well worth the short journey

Loved everything about this cottage. The property is as described on the website being remote, which we found bliss.
A true peaceful bolt hole which we will definitely both recommend and visit again.

Yes, we are remote if you are used to living in a town or on a street. You get used to it though and it really isn't remote unless you want to go to the shops every day for supplies, or you happen to be very short of fuel (which could be a problem, though one we could certainly help with). Thank you for your kind review.

We went to xidong cottage for a mini moon after our wedding. We wanted somewhere we could totally relax and recharge our battery's after a hectic few weeks in the run up to our wedding. Xidong cottage gave us exactly that. We spent hours in the hot tub relaxing. The kitchen was well equipped and the bed was extremely comfortable. There where fresh bread, eggs, milk and butter on arrival which was a lovely touch. We will definitely be going back and I have already recommended it to so many people. Thankyou so much for a wonderful stay xx

Just back from the most wonderful few days in Shropshire, Xidong is an enchanting barn a joy to call home, a superb location for peace and tranquillity. This area of Shropshire is stunning, we were lucky enough to have beautiful dry still conditions with atmospheric early mist, gorgeous sunny spells and beautifully clear evening sky just perfect for a little hot tub star gazing. Beautiful garden which enchanted the dogs.
The landscape is breathtakingly beautiful with the trees in full autumn glory ideal for walking and just stopping to soak up the peace and beautifully manicured surroundings. The pride of the local farmers is evident.

Xidong is wonderfully well appointed and after a day exploring the area coming back to the hot tub, log fire and a cosy, comfortable bed.... bliss

A beautiful place just to be with someone special and a couple of scruffy mutts

We had a great week at Xidong and found the cottage really comfortable. The location is superb if you want seclusion and peace. The wood burner was a great bonus with logs supplied. The bed very comfy. The hot tub great.
There were however a few things which let the property down. The probably once impressive Japanese garden has an air of neglect and the water feature was just a muddy bog. It is now deemed a wildlife garden but apparently the pond leaks and was not repaired. The garden was full of weeds and the plants poorly maintained. The decking around the hot tub was tatty and slippery and the solar lights all broken. The decking outside the cottage french windows was rotten with planks loose exposing large nails. The garden furniture also very old and bench seat rotten. The windows and french windows in the cottage were homemade double glazing which were permanently misted up spoiling the views and just looked rubbish. There were no instruction books for the cottage appliances. The cottage and garden require a lot of TLC to restore to the condition portrayed on the website. The cottage was clean when we arrived and the eggs and bread a nice touch.

We are pleased that you both had a great week at Xidong and enjoyed the facilities and are sorry that you were disappointed with the garden. We agree that there is a good deal of maintenance needed outside and this is something we attend to on an ongoing basis. The pond is a great feature but has deteriorated through the action of tree roots. It needs to be relined which is a major undertaking and we are considering other options before taking it on, as stated on the website. The decking is shortly to be repaired or renewed, the solar lights have been attended to and the ornamental bench is to be replaced. (The garden table and chairs are not old as they were only recently purchased). As to the glazing, the triple folding doors that completely open the cottage up to the garden in warm weather were purpose made and replacing these and the double glazing is a very costly structural improvement which if we had the means, would do so; for the time being we do not and our usual prices reflect that. The cottage appliances and worktop were installed very recently and we could easily have provided instructions if requested. We try to encourage guests to let us know if there is anything that we can help with during their stay.

Xidong cottage delivered in many levels . It was 15 minutes from anywhere , the cottage was without wifi & mobile phone signal so it was quiet and relaxing. It offered an oriental feel with an interior that blended Asian decor and furniture into a converted barn with some success. It's open plan layout offered a multitude of options with a view of the Japanese gardens and the hills behind. The hot tub in the garden was a simple bit of genius providing hours of relaxation after a busy day out running or visiting some local attraction
Sadly the Japanese gardens, as detailed and accurate as they once clearly were, looked old and in dire need of attention. The water features dried out and muddy , the plants over grown and the wood work aged and in places rotten under foot. What should have been a useful key feature to us was the washing machine and dryer. Alas the the 'new' washing machine kept blowing fuses and there appeared no urgency to have it repaired during our stay.
That said the Xidong is a delightful secluded holiday cottage and one we found to meet many of our needs. Any future guests wold be well advised to stock up on foodstuffs etc as its a long way to nip out for a pint of milk

Thank you for your review. You are right - the garden is a mess and it is high on our list of things to deal with. However, neither Peter nor I have been in the best of health and in those circumstances one has to decide what is most important to do first; I am afraid the garden is a big job and needs time - it will be done. As to the washing machine; it was sorted, maybe not immediately and I am sorry for that. Someone unknown to me had decided that a 5 amp fuse not a 13 amp fuse was correct, so it was no wonder it blew! I still don't understand why a guest would replace a fuse of the wrong ampage and not say anything to us about it?

We had a lovely weekend away. We were so impressed by the cottage, it's quirky design and the welcome treats we received on arrival (including eggs from the farm and fresh lillies). The bed was comfy and the terry cloth robe for when we got out of the hot tub was the icing on the cake. Couldn't recommend this cottage more to people who truly want to get away and enjoy some quality time.

This barn conversion is beautifully done and a lot bigger than it seems from the photos. The enclosed garden made it easy for us to let our two dogs play freely through out the week. The space both inside and out is charmingly designed, and we loved being able to fold back the doors to the garden and let the outside in. It would have been even lovelier if the ponds had been full, but it didn't worry us, and at least avoided the dogs falling in!

The farm and the surrounding area is peaceful and quiet, and with no wifi or phone signal, we enjoyed a real retreat from the usual constant communications, news and business.

My 3rd stay at Squire Farm in Xidong. I first stayed in 2009.
I love the location for wildlife and history, and for interesting small towns with their architecture and history.
Or just to stay relaxing and reading at Xidong, with an occasional trip to the hot tub!
My only personal downside is that there is no bath (I knew this right from the start); I really struggle with just a shower/wet room for more than 3-4days, so a week was beginning to be an issue!
I may well return, but probably to the Farmhouse which has a bath!

felt property needed a little TLC I appreciate it is on a working farm and windows do get dirty but could hardly see out of them, lots of cobwebs inside and shower rather dated and smelly. Outside could be fantastic the hot tub was great but it would have been lovely to see a clean pond not a stagnant one with thick green algae, did not spoil our stay but feel it can be so much better

I am sorry you were disappointed with a few things in the cottage. Yes, there are lots of things which need attention - it is an on-going project, hence the fact that I have paint on my hands right now from re-decorating the bedroom and the wet-room ceiling! The windows need re-glazing - an expensive undertaking and one which will be done eventually; they have been cleaned quite recently. However, in the last year we have replaced the washing machine and drier and built a handy counter top and boot shelf in the lean-to; replaced the torn hot-tub cover (the fourth now) and pollarded the chestnut trees to let more light and less leaves into the garden. I'm afraid however often we remove the cobwebs, those spiders just put'em up again; it is part of the character of the building that spiders come with the old beams. Oh, and the pond is covered in duck-weed (time of year)and is full of newts and frogs, so it is not stagnant.

We booked Xidong as a retreat after our wedding. It proved to be the perfect escape from everything and a great base for our honeymoon walks on the amazing Shropshire hills. Hospitality was great, eggs, butter, milk and bread all from the farm was very much appreciated. The Xidong cottage was everything we hoped for and more, its much larger than we thought it would be, the garden is uniquely Japanese and there is nothing better than relaxing in the hot-tub after a day walking. There are numerous little villages and towns nearby to visit with many pubs, tea rooms and shops with local produce. Highly recommend this place!

We had an amazing time at Xidong. Everything we could imagine and more. Quirky but really comfortable. Fire was lit for us on our arrival and the underfloor heating was a treat. Didn't get in the car for 2 days and it was heavenly to be out of mobile range! Couldn't get the TV to work but actually that was a blessing! Fabulous walks with the hot tub soothing aching limbs. Ok, so, I haven't written a bad review in forever and I want to be clear, there are many good things about Xidong (I'll list them) and the things that drove me crazy may not annoy others so much. However, as an enthusiastic traveller, I have to admit that the negatives, in my case, outweighed the positives.
This cottage is beautiful! It is not overlooked (unless you count the chickens). It has lovely high ceilings and a light airy feel. It was very quiet. There were delicious eggs awaiting our arrival and a pretty bunch of fresh flowers. The hot tub is clean and is just blissful. It is switched on for your use and has clear instructions. The robes are a great touch and were very welcome. The washing machine and tumble dryer were in good order. The television was big and worked fine (bring your own DVDs). There is a small amount of underfloor heating that is nice when you are eating your breakfast at the table. You can't enjoy this for too long though because the dining chairs are wood and very low.

The first thing you notice after you brew yourself a nice cup of tea is that the sofa is not for lounging. It is bench hard. So you take to the ikea type wooden single seater and though it is not bench hard it is not cosy- which is a shame. Because in the middle of winter, in a barn, you want to put on a woolly jumper and big slippers and curl up near a fireplace and read or stare or count your chickens.
Which, unfortunately brings me on to the fireplace. I am not a fireplace virgin- I have a great working knowledge of how to use them. Yet this one completely baffled me as it bellowed smoke at every opportunity. On the first night the barn was quite cold, but with a few jumpers and a fireplace it should have been ok. However the matches that were left were all wet. Even if we had brought our own matches there was no paper to use to start the fire. I have to admit, that without the comfy sofa to snuggle on, or the fireplace to sit near, we took to the bed upstairs (comments on the bed to follow). The following day after getting hold of a new pack of matches (and a lighter and a newspaper) we found that the fireplace was just difficult. To the point where we ended up going to bed early again, just to keep warm and be slightly comfortable.
The bed!
No.
I really had no idea that my wife's side was more comfortable than mine until she climbed into my side on the second night and immediately complained about the springs. I woke up several times on the first night. Cold and seriously in pain. On the second night I was so tired I woke up less but was unable to sleep on my left side due to an unwelcome spring. I can see that there is a topper and I'm sure that some people may be ok with this bed. We weren't.
The boiler is in the bedroom and does come on during the night- funnily the first time it happened it sounded like gun shots- so that was a treat! Unfortunately you get used to the gun shots and then a few knocks every few hours.
There was a Welcome Folder that had clear instructions on how to use the fireplace and hot tub, however, there was no local map. My suggestion is that tourist usually like a map. Well I do. I think it would be great to have a little map that shows you how you can walk in to Bucknell- especially because there is no internet access- you are really relying on prior research or what is available at the accommodation. There was a kind of information draw under the tv that had a disorganised splay of tourist information- my wife spent a good hour sorting through it.
On the one sunny day we piled some cushions high onto the sofa, to make a little soft-type-fort and just snuggle and look out the window only to discover that the glazing on the windows had ruined and turned the windows white. It will all need to be replaced and is not accurately represented in the photos on the website.
A couple of nights before we were due to leave, as we lay in bed, we hatched a plan to just cut our loses and bunk out a day early. It was the happiest we had been all week.
It is not my intention to upset Squire farm in any way- a new sofa, a new mattress, new windows, perhaps a chimney clean and this place would have been delightful.

Thank you for your review and I am sorry your stay was not up to your expectations. Firstly, let me point out that we were here for the whole time of your stay and would have been more than happy to address any problems you had to the best of our ability. The wood burner has been checked (there is no damage) and lit with no problems and no smoke, illustrating that we can sort out guests problems if they ask. It appears your expectations have not been met, but no-where in the description of the cottage do we state that we have a ‘sofa’. It is a bench with futons and some large cushions – true, not to everyone’s taste, but that is what it is; what it is not, is a cosy little farm cottage and again, this is made clear in the description. We can only know about recalcitrant springs in the bed by people telling us about them as we do not use it ourselves! Again, we knew nothing of this and could have done something about it if we had been told. Finally, I am very pleased that there were some elements of your stay which were to your satisfaction; we have indeed spent a lot of money recently on the washing machine and tumble drier and many other repairs and improvements. The hot water tank was an essential addition for our guests to be able to have plenty of hot water for a shower and washing up; it is regrettable that it has to be in the bedroom, but there really is nowhere else for it to go. As for the heating and the windows – both are issues we have considered at length and if we had the means, would replace without hesitation; as it is, we do not and our usual prices reflect that. For any potential guests reading this review and reply, please, please come and tell us if there is a problem...

Xidong cottage is one of the most wonderful places we have ever stayed in the UK. You could not want for a more relaxing location and the cottage itself is simply perfect. Second time back, this time for 1st wedding anniversary! Love Squire farm and Xidong cottage. Hot tub late at night looking at the stars is a wonderful experience. The rainfall shower, open fire, under floor heating and snug little bedroom up a stone staircase are great features. Homemade bread and freshly laid eggs are welcome touches.
One thing that could do with a bit of work is the garden as this time it seemed a little unloved.
Overall, have lots of happy memories from Xidong and will be back!

Thank you for your kind review; it's a shame you missed the glorious weather we had at the weekend though!

Brilliant break away from the work and city life. Cottage and garden set in a peaceful and beautiful location - did find that there isn't much around but brilliant if you want a break away doing nothing. Hot tub was amazing and felt very relaxed. Didn't get to see owners but quite nice being left alone and knowing they are close if needed. Only issues were that the garden lights weren't working (or couldn't work them out). Great value for money

Thank you for your review. We didn't get to see our guests either, but we don't like to intrude on people and unless we see them in passing, tend to leave them to their peace. However, we are, as you say, near by to help with any problems or answer questions as best we can. We've checked the lights and they are now working. There is lots of countryside around with walks, woods, water and views, but yes, you need a car if you want to see or do anything else.

Our second visit, just as relaxing as the first, but one or two little bits in need of tlc.
In general the cottage is just lovely, but a couple of little things need addressing. The shower head either needs renewing or de scaling as many holes in the rose are partially or completely blocked. Outside the wooden walkway needs the odd repair and a general spruce up with varnish or paint as does the surround to the hot tub which would have been even better for a sweep around it to prevent getting covered with bits of tree and dead leaves every time.
I don't want this to sound like a whinge as Xidong is a fabulous place to stay, so relaxing in a wonderful get away from it all location, just these few quick wins would make an awful lot of difference cosmetically, also having listed a welcome pack including fresh bread, we didn't take any with us as it was so lovely before and were a little disappointed to find none there.
The little things make a lot of difference and would move this place from a three star to a five star cottage.
We will be back.

Thank you for your review. You are right there are a few things to attend to; a difficult winter with ill health and then lambing has meant the cottages have been a little neglected in the last few months. The bread;oops! First time I haven't left bread or cake for our guests and I am really sorry you didn't say anything... not having had time to bake on the Monday of your arrival, I might have managed it on the Tuesday! I must admit, having seen a few half eaten loaves thrown in the compost bin, I have been having doubts as to whether guests appreciate it or not.

A great escape

Myself my fiancé and our Labrador had an amazing relaxing stay here , so tranquil :)
No internet , no phone signal ! Lush !!
I have rated the customer service low only because we never saw anyone really , which is also fine with me :)

Thank you for your kind review. It is true, we do not necessarily meet everyone - many people simply want to be left alone to enjoy their space. However we are nearly always around somewhere, be it on the farm or in the farmhouse if there are queries or problems and always let our guests know if we are going to be away, which doesn't happen very often.
