This was a much needed short break and a birthday present for my husband. The cottage was beautifully appointed, very comfortable and in a good location. There was a great deal of attention to detail which helped to make the stay very enjoyable. Everything was in excellent condition and it was all very clean. We would certainly book the cottage again. This property was exactly as described with everythingyou need for self catering. It was very well appointed and spotless on arrival.
Location is only 2 minutes off the A1 so easy access to all of the coastline/beaches and attractions of Northumbria. Only minutes from Scotland if you want to venture over the border too.
I would recommend it without hesitation.

Whilst Scremeston is not the prettiest village it is one of the most welcoming. The Schoolmaster's Retreat is in an ideal location to explore Northumbria and The Borders. The cottage contains everything needed for a comfortable stay, with the owners taking great care in providing lovely touches that exceed expectation. This was our third stay and has become our favourite holiday retreat. Long lonely beaches, a wealth of wildlife and wild flowers, castles, gardens and everything in between make this the perfect place to visit.

This was our 2nd visit to School Master's Retreat. It is in an excellent location with so many places to visit both in England and Scotland. It was lovely to return back to the very comfortable and quiet accommodation after a day out. The local Cocklawburn beach was great for an evening walk.
The starter pack of tea, coffee, milk, biscuits and apple juice was very welcome after our long journey.
We very much enjoyed our holiday in such a beautiful part of the country staying in perfect accommodation.

We returned to Northumberland and stayed once again at Scremerston cottages (Schoolmasters cottage) as we had had a lovely holiday there in 2022. We were again delighted with our stay this year, with the cottage being as homely and comfortable as before. Very lucky with the weather for a November week's stay with only two days when we could not go out which was fine as the cottage is warm and cosy. Excellent location for exploring Nothumberland with it's beautiful coast and many castles. Even went by train one day from Berwick to Edinburgh.
Loved everything about the cottage and would definitely stay again. The welcome hamper was great as were the recommendations on places to visit including pubs and restaurants.
Such a lovely clean county and eating out was great value compared to what we are used to in the south east.

We had a very comfortable stay at this cottage. Plenty of mod cons and excellent facilities with s generous hamper from the owners. There were 2 tv's which was handy however if you want to watch netflix, makesure you remember your password to sign in. Theres 2 great cafes very close for breakfast/lunch, one near cocklawburn beach, one on the road next to go outdoors which do big portions! Theres some great walking very close...down to the beach or a longer walk along the clifftop via Spittal and Tweedmouth to Berwick where theres some great eateries or an interesting walk along the walls. Theres also a good local bus service and plenty of quick taxies.

This was our second visit to Schoolmaster’s Retreat and just as enjoyable as our first. The cottage is very comfortable , well equipped and is very attractively decorated and spotlessly clean.
We love this area with its wonderful beaches , glorious scenery and interesting places to visit . There are great bike rides and lots of good walks close by. There is a variety of nice eating places if you don’t feel like cooking.

We were recommended School masters retreat by some friends and we were not disappointed. Originally planned to visit earlier but caught covid so was unable to go, Ros was so understanding and helpful in getting us rebooked even managing to resell some of our days and crediting this for our new booking.The cottage is in a lovely part of the country, close to both good beaches and countryside. The property is well equipped with everything one would need if you wished to completely self cater. The property is well furnished having a comfortable bed and good en-suite. Ros left us with a lovely welcome hamper to get you started with your stay,theGinger biscuits were delicious. There is good information about the area and where to eat which was very helpful. Will definitely be returning to enjoy the area further. Most importantly to us when staying somewhere is that the place is clean which the Schoolmasters cottage was spotless with Ros having very high covid precautions in place. If you wish to stay in a lovely place, relax, enjoy lovely beach walks or visit historical places in a great part of the country then this is for you.

We recently enjoyed a wonderful relaxing week in this gorgeous little cottage. It was beautifully decorated and furnished, with some well thought out touches, and equipped with almost everything you could need! The open plan layout works particularly well for a couple. The bedroom is lovely and the bed was incredibly comfortable. We slept so well every night, also partly because of all the fresh air we were getting while exploring this stunning part of the country. The cottage is well located near the A1 so it's ideal for travelling along the coastline to visit the incredible huge sandy beaches, or the pretty towns and villages. It's not very easy to get around without a car, and we had some difficulty with both taxis and buses trying to get into nearby Berwick, but with a car it's quite straightforward. We found some nice places to eat and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Ros, the owner, was friendly and helpful without being intrusive, and gave us some useful information about places to visit. The small courtyard garden is a pleasant suntrap. We enjoyed having breakfast out there and also relaxing on the comfortable loungers. The cottage was exceptionally clean and the Covid measures were very good. All in all, we had a wonderful holiday in this lovely retreat.

It was very comfortable, super clean and a relaxing place to stay. Even though the property is on a main road in Scremerston there is very little road noise. The location is a great jumping off point to either Scotland, Northumberland beaches or Northumberland National Park.
Berwick has a lot of history to offer and also some hidden independent shops and cafes. Would particularly recommend Mule on Rouge and opposite them is an amazing organic shop selling fresh and dry organic food, household goods and clothes.

For the benefit of future guests- the road in the village you prefer to is actually classed a U road, not a main road. It only serves the houses in the village. We were pleasantly surprised when we arrived to find everything we needed to start our stay such as tea, coffee,milk,cake and biscuits. We were blown away by the cleanlyness and decor. The cottage felt homely and comfy, we could not fault anything and Ros was so friendly and helpful she actually took time out to supply us a list of reccomded restaurants in the area. All in all the week was great and we would definately return. We would reccomend anyone to stay here it was great.

School Master’s Retreat is a superb, clean, comfortable and cosy cottage. It is very well equipped with attractive furnishings. The cottage is immaculate with excellent Covid-19 measures in place which enabled us to feel comfortable staying there during the current situation. The owners were very friendly and welcoming (following social distancing rules). School Master’s Retreat is 2 minutes drive from the A1 so it is really easy to get to local places of interest. There is a also a lovely coastal footpath in walking distance from the cottage and the nearby quiet Cocklawburn beach is worth a visit. We think the cottage is of a very high standard and really reasonably priced. It was a pleasure to stay here and we would highly recommend it.

Just returned from a week at the Schoolmasters Retreat, the cottage was just perfect, extremely comfortable and had everything we required. The cleanliness was outstanding, Ros and David had obviously worked very hard to adhere to the COVID 19 guidelines( it was much appreciated). Weather was good and the location of the cottage was ideal for local beaches and numerous places to eat.

The cottage is as lovely as you imagine from the photographs, very stylish, exceptionally clean and comfortable too.
Very well equipped so that you do not need to take lots of extras with you plus tea, coffee, milk and biscuits for your arrival and Prosecco in the fridge!
You can take a lovely walk to the beach from the property through some wonderful countryside and take a break at a lovely farm style cafe (pot a doodle do) where food is really good and staff friendly.
Lots of good info in the cottage, you are spoilt for choice with things to see and do in this part of the world.
We really had a great week here and fell in love with Northumberland very quickly........cant wait to return.

The Schoolmasters Retreat provided us with superb accommodation during our holiday. It was comfortable, furnished to a very high standard and spotlessly clean. A delightful and luxurious cottage providing everything we could possibly need for our weeks stay in this beautiful part of the country. This was our third visit to this wonderful cottage for two. We absolutely love the quality and cleanliness that it offers. We always sleep so well and come home refreshed and well rested... everything a holiday should be. We have stayed at many cottages over the years, all recommended by Premier Cottage guide and this one is undoubtedly our favourite. The owners are very helpful if needed, otherwise they leave you to enjoy your holiday in peace. The cottage is ideally situated for not only visiting the Northumberland attractions but also enjoying long walks on the nearby sandy beaches of the Lindisfarne Nature Reserve. This time we also enjoyed a day out in Edinburgh - only 40 minutes by train.

We stayed at this property on a pre Christmas break. The property is very well appointed with all the facilities you would want. It Is an ideal property for a couple looking for a cosy retreat.
The location is brilliant just off the A1 enabling visits to all local attractions. We went to Edinburgh on the train and the journey of about70 miles only takes 40 minutes direct from Berwick. We were very lucky with the weather in that it did not rain all week and we enjoyed many a fine walk along the rigged coastal paths.

The cottage, attached to the main residence, is half a mile from the A1, and as such within easy reach of numerous wonderful Northumbrian places to visit. The owner has equipped the place with considerable thought for her visitors comfort, there is hardly anything needed. Books, DVD's, flyers for all tourist areas, and the kitchen equipment covered all eventualities. There is a small courtyard at the back, big enough to turn a car around in, with a table and chairs for warmer evenings, and completely private.
The attention to detail is second to none, with good quality fixtures and fittings. We asked for a thinner duvet as the bedroom is very cosy and one was provided within 24 hours (it had to be purchased, as we were the only guests to request this!) All in all a very happy week, and if we choose to go back to this part of UK we would not hesitate to use this cottage again.

We would thoroughly recommend this wonderfully appointed, very comfortable cottage for two. Immaculately clean and in a great location for exploring the Northumberland Coast. We loved the huge sandy beach 5 minutes away and were lucky enough to see a pod of Dolphins swimming close to the shore one afternoon. We went home totally relaxed and refreshed. My only fault if you can call it such was the bed. It was so firm that we slept badly and woke up very stiff and aching every morning. However the bed linen was beautiful and the duvet very cosy. Despite the bed, we would love to book again but will be bringing a topper with us next time!!
Ros the owner was very helpful with recommendations for restaurants and had written on a map all the various sites to see, places to sample local cuisine etc. We used this everyday of our holiday and found it invaluable. Thank you so much for this, much appreciated.

School Master's Retreat was just what we were looking for, excellent quality accommodation for just the two of us, with a feeling of luxury and style throughout.
The accommodation was spotless, carefully thought out and really well equipped with lots of little touches which showed that the owners really cared about their guests. Ros and David were great hosts, there to help when needed but otherwise giving us lots of peace and privacy. They also gave us some great tips on places to visit including some fantastic beaches nearby.
Northumberland is a beautiful county and this was a really good base from which to make the most of all it has to offer.
All in all we had a lovely holiday and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to friends and family.

Our recent visit in June 2018 was our third in 12 months. School Masters Retreat is quite clearly ideal for us. The cottage is fabulous and being for two is a rarity in the self catering business. It's location was perfect, close to the gorgeous Northumberland coast, and coastal villages whilst also close to the lovely Scottish Borders. Ros and David ,the owners , are very welcoming and friendly and genuinely care that everything is OK with the cottage for their guests.

The property itself is very beautiful, clean and to a high standard and is ideally located for travelling around and is a ten minute or so walk to the beach. We walked for miles along the coastal paths.

The cottage was perfect for a couple. Very definitely a self-contained retreat. A great place to explore Berwick, the Tweed, the Borders and the surrounding countryside. Ros and David looked after us well, making sure we had everything we needed. They very kindly spent time looking for a missing debit card and they were prompt in returning a couple of items we left behind. Our only gripe - we were a little cold downstairs, partly due to the dreadful weather we had, and partly that all the heat disappeared straight up the stairs (the bedroom was toasty warm). The living room would benefit from some sort of fire, especially when there is an ideal place to site it. Other than that we enjoyed our stay and would recommend it to anyone.

Thank you very much for submitting your review, we always welcome and appreciate feedback. The comfort of all our lovely guests is extremely important to us. Therefore we are sorry to hear that you found the downstairs a little cold. We would have preferred for you to have informed us of this during your stay as we are unable to investigate/resolve this issue after the event. For the benefit of other potential guests reading this, the heating in the cottage is by generous capacity Worcester Bosch boiler with large capacity column radiators through out. (The entire roof and walls are all generously insulated too) The heating system was fitted by professionals 20 months ago. There is a climate control thermostat in the sitting room that allows the heating to be set to the temperature that is required by the guest. There is also a note on the thermostat with basic instructions and an offer to ask us if you require any assistance with the heating settings (as we appreciate it may not be the same as guests have in their own home). We did knock on the door and speak with you on the afternoon following your arrival to ask if all was well for you. No mention of any issue with the heating was made, nor was it when we again chatted on Easter Sunday. Upon your departure we entered the Retreat and found heating on the ground floor warm and set on a constant 21 degrees on the thermostatic display. We would politely like to mention that we have never advertised the property as having a real/open fire. Kindest Regards.

After a hectic year, I needed somewhere to relax, recharge and enjoy the festive season. The Schoolmasters Retreat did not disappoint.
I spent a peaceful, relaxing and enjoyable Christmas week. The cottage was cosy, beautifully decorated and very well equipped.
I had some amazing beach walks and Berwick-On-Tweed is a real gem. Northumberland is truly wild but wonderful.
Went home happy and relaxed. It’s a perfect for a break any time of the year but at Christmas with it decorated festively it was fabulous.

Very nice comfortable cottage in a good location, not far from any of the towns, beaches and other places of interest.
The owners have worked hard to create a very clean and comfortable cottage with everything you need supplied, a pleasure to return to after a long day.

We enjoyed a wonderful week stay in the beautiful cottage. We loved the extremely comfy bed and sparkling cleanliness of the entire cottage. It is very well equipped with everything you could need and more. We loved the location. Only a couple of minutes to shops and restaurants (M and S simply food) and we enjoyed wonderful walks on the glorious sandy beaches close by. Thank you to the kind and helpful owners.
