My family and I had a lovely stay at Elephant Cottage over the Christmas period, there is plenty of seating in the atmospheric lounge and we welcomed the open fire as it was incredibly cold in the UK at Christmas 2025. On that note although we all had a lovely time together in the cottage there are a couple of watch outs:

1. There is very little by way of spices and kitchen essentials so if you wish to cook, bring everything you need with you including oils and also cleaning products, there wasn't much by way of cloths and cleaning stuff available
2. Bring loo rolls, there wasn't sufficient for a 5 night stay
3. The top floor bedroom was incredibly cold, the radiator didn't pump out much heat and the ceiling is wooden, very little by way of insulation, it was freezing all day and especially at night
4. Bedroom 2 bed is very small so wouldn't suit a couple or a tall teenager, though technically it is a small double
5. It was cosy downstairs with the open fire in full swing but there were times when it was a little cold, bring layers
6. The cottage is directly on to a street that is the route in and out of Tetbury, cars whizz up and down quite fast so be careful coming in and out, especially if with children or the elderly (there are 3 steep steps up to front door from road)
7. Be careful in the bathroom, it could do with a handrail by the shower as the shower is in a sunken bath so if you were elderly you would struggle to get in and out of the bath and if wet might find getting in and out of the shower tricky.

Having said that, we all enjoyed our stay very much and these are points we all noted to turn it into a full 5 star review.

Philip from Brighton stayed at Elephant Cottage for 5 nights in December 2025

StayCotswold replied 30 days ago
Thank you, Philip, for taking the time to review your Christmas stay at Elephant Cottage. We are delighted to hear that you enjoyed your visit and that the open fire contributed to a warm and welcoming atmosphere. We appreciate your feedback and will ensure it is passed on to the property owner and their management team. As Elephant Cottage is a self-catering property, spices and cooking oils are not provided. However, a starter pack of essential cleaning items should be available for your stay, including dishwasher tablets, laundry tablets, washing-up liquid, sponges, and cloths. The property management team also provide two toilet rolls per bathroom for guests’ arrival. We would like to note that the property description and location are clearly outlined on our website, and we recommend reviewing these details carefully prior to confirming a booking. Thank you once again for your feedback, and we hope to welcome you back in the future.

The cottage was a great getaway destination for a university reunion. Cosy and stylishly decorated. Located very close to the town centre, with all amenities on your doorstep. Drawbacks are the one small bathroom and internal windows to two of the bedrooms which do not have proper curtains and therefore let in light from the stairwell.

Charming old cottage situated in the heart of Tetbury. The cottage was warm and comfortable with a few minor issues that can come with a property of this style. That aside you could not wish for a better situated base to explore this town.

Such a lovely character property! The light wells make it feel so bright and airy, and we loved the piano – such a thoughtful touch. The location couldn’t be better, with pubs, a chip shop and the town centre all just a short walk away.

A quirky and lovely Cotswolds cottage. Spacious rooms, comfortable beds, good location, well equipped throughout and our party of 3 65yr old friends loved our stay.

It is however, in our opinion, worth cautioning that it wouldn’t be suitable for young children, the elderly or the physically disabled as the bath (with shower in) has two high steps up to it, taps to navigate and the screen door can only be moved minimally. Felt hazardous. Also there are 3 steep uneven steps to the front door and steep stairs inside particularly up to the attic bedroom. Please don’t let this put you off if you’re able bodied without young children as it’s so quintessentially costwolds and comfortable and, as I said earlier, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

We had a lovely stay at Elephant Cottage. It is perfectly located in a very convenient location in the centre of Tetbury. The cottage was clean and tidy with everything we needed for a comfortable and cosy stay.

The kitchen and living space are lovely and the bedrooms are a decent size and cosy. The logs for the fire was a nice touch!

The cottage is as lovely looking as in the photographs. First impressions were very good. We were left a few logs for the wood burner and some essentials such as washing up liquid, dishwasher tablets, loo rolls and kitchen towels.
Unfortunately, the cottage is on a busy thoroughfare which meant noisy traffic throughout the day and night. We were aware that the front door opened up to steep steps leading to a narrow pavement however we felt that this could be quite dangerous considering the speed at which vehicles fly past.
Of course this can’t be helped (unless extra glazing to the windows are permitted) but it was such a shame as we couldn’t really switch off due to the noise which could also be heard from the bedrooms.

Our sleep was interrupted by traffic noise but also because the mattresses were uncomfortable. We felt that replacing them could help towards getting some sleep as well as some decent ear plugs.
We also felt that the use of black out fabric instead of voile type fabric could be used to cover the internal hall windows to the bedrooms on the first floor because light floods through from the bedrooms or if the hall way light is on.

The shower was lovely once in it. There was good water pressure and we always had hot water however, we have to agree with another reviewer which pointed out that you need to be quite agile to step in and out of the shower due to the depth of the sunken bath and lack of space to manoeuvre. None of our party have mobility issues but we still had to be very careful. Perhaps the installation of a handrail might help towards steadying oneself.
We really wanted to love our time in the cottage and we did love some aspects of it but unfortunately it wasn’t the relaxing break we were hoping for.
That said though, the cottage is within walking distance to all amenities and the owner was responsive and kindly allowed a later check. It’s just a shame about the noise.

Thank you Seeta for your review of Elephant Cottage. We are pleased to read that you found the cottage to be as lovely looking as the photographs on the website and you were able to walk into town and enjoy the local amenities. The property is a three storey, 18th century townhouse located in the centre of Tetbury and it is viewable on the location map available on the website. The property is located in the centre of Tetbury on B4014 Silver Street which is a main road through the centre of town. We are sorry to hear that the traffic noise kept you awake. We will pass your feedback onto the property owner regarding the mattresses and the suggestion of ear plugs. We look forward to welcoming you back to the Cotswolds soon

We had a great long weekend in Tetbury to celebrate with friends, 6 adults in the cottage worked well, great lounge area and a well provided kitchen (it was just a bit of a squeeze in one of the beds, but that is considering half the party were over 6ft tall!) Lovely spot, so close to the beautiful town centre where we walked for breakfast every day and right on the Tetbury Trail for a longer stroll. The roof terrace is a great sun trap all day, enjoyed a morning coffee with a book, and also a glass of wine later in the evening. Our only suggestion would be to up the dishwasher tablets and loo rolls! Thanks so much we had a wonderful stay.
