We appreciate the cottage was old and quirky but we should have been told it was unsuitable for the elderly! My 86 yr old mom struggled to get up the stairs as they were old, sloping and had no handrail.
There were large black flies continuously flying around in all the rooms.
The carbon monoxide monitor didn't work and when we got in there was a worrying smell which we reported but it wasn't investigated.. We didn't see a smoke alarm. There was a hole in the floor under the bunk bed and also water damage to the wall in the same room.
Lovely old cottage tho in a great part of the Cotswolds.

Thank you Fiona for your review of Gassons View. We are disappointed to read that the property was not suitable for your 86 year old Mum. There is a virtual display of the property on the website and in the finer details it also states that this is a period property with steep, winding staircase and low ceilings. We have passed your feedback onto the property owner, he takes all feedback seriously and will ask the property mananger to carry out a routine check of the carbon monoxide testers as a matter of urgency. He apologies about the flies at the property, they are cluster flies which live outside during the summer months in the fields but when the weather turns colder they seek warmth inside and live in roof voids and window frames. He will ask the property manager to eradicate the flies. We look forward to welcoming you back soon.

Gassons View is in a great location in the quaint village of Filkins which has a beautiful church and pub and a superb woollen mill. The property itself was good value for money. It had a large, bright, well-equipped and modern kitchen/dining area which we all liked and suited our needs very well. The lounge was spacious and comfortable, but more on this in a minute. It was notably cheaper than other properties of the same size. This is possibly because it had become rather shabby in places, for example, the front of the house gave a poor impression, with peeling paint on the door and an overgrown garden. Although the house felt clean, the soft furnishings in the lounge were rather stained and grubby. The shower downstairs was backing up, but this was attended to quickly by our contact, who was lovely. The damp on the wall in the bunk room is pretty bad and is unacceptable, I notice from previous reviews that Stay Cotswold have promised action on this, but as the owners apparently haven't yet acted this need following up urgently.
Overall, this was a great property in a lovely location, but would suggest that maybe it needs a bit of TLC to bring it back up to the standard it might have been (as suggested by much earlier reviews).

Gassons View is a lovely little cottage oozing character in the cutest of villages with a fantastic pub near by. We stayed for 2 nights and generally enjoyed our stay. We played games by the fire and slept well but would say we were disappointed by the condition of the property. The garden was very overgrown and scruffy, there was mould on the wall in the bunk room right by the bed and the whole place looked in need of a deep clean and freshen up (we found dead flies, cobwebs and wood louse). Not what we expected for the price. Otherwise beds were very comfy and it was very peaceful. I think management need to inspect the property and get the owners to have a good spring clean, garden tidy, clean windows and fix the mould before renting it out again.

We have previously reported some issues directly to StayCotswold who said they would raise these with the owner and Property Manager to ensure they are rectified for future guests, sadly we have not received any feedback. The property is ideally situated in the lovely village of Filkins and adequately accommodated our party of seven. Although generally clean the property could do with a deep clean, wood louse infestation in the bathrooms and poorly draining shower. The property was quite dusty resulting in the smoke alarm being activated on three occasions, a quick blow of the dust from the detector resolved this. The small bedroom with bunk beds is uninhabitable due to damp/mould behind the door. The towel rail in the downstairs bathroom requires immediate attention as it trips the consumer unit when switched on. Rubbish removal is an issue, the recycling bin was already overflowing even though left by the rear gate as requested, there was no sign of the grey General waste bin and the garden waste bin in the garden shed was overflowing. The information in the property was dated 2020/21. The gardens were totally overgrown and not practical for sitting out or having a bbq.

Thank you, Malcolm, for your review of Gassons View. We are delighted that you found the property to be ideally situated and able to accommodate you and your guests comfortably. You did send in an email initially to provide your feedback after your departure from the property and as confirmed in our response we did pass that feedback on to the property manager so he could rectify the points raised for the benefit of future guests. The points have either been rectified or are in the process of being so. Woodlice are unfortunately quite common in older cottages, and whilst they are not hazardous to humans or pets, we do appreciate that they can be unpleasant. Gassons View was built in a time well before damp proof courses were introduced so you will find after wet weather that woodlice will appear as the damp and dark habitat is the ideal environment for them. Woodlice can be removed by hoovering them up, but you will find that new ones may appear as they can fit through the tiniest of gaps in brickwork or under doors to get back in. The towel rail has now been disconnected until it can be repaired or replaced. A problem with a clogged gutter has caused rainwater to run down the external wall and penetrate the stone causing the plaster and paintwork to be affected. The owner is aware of this and has booked for a tradesperson to rectify this. The property manager has confirmed that unfortunately there was at the time an unknown issue that prevented the local council from the emptying the bins however the rubbish has now been removed. Only the courtyard is available for guests to use during their stay, the garden beyond the gate is sadly out of bounds. We do hope that overall, you enjoyed your time exploring the Cotswolds!

Cosy and central to major roads and places.
Lovely time with family.
Need a car to get extra shopping bits. Local shop only opens for 1 hour and you need to pre order goods.

My sisters and I had a lovely weekend at Gassons View. It provided everything we needed in a beautiful location. The village of Filkins was very welcoming and the thriving village shop was perfect for a few bits and pieces. We didn’t venture into the pool, but in the height of summer would have been perfect.
As others have said, the main part of the house is very old, so may not be suitable for those who are tall or have mobility issues, but this didn’t matter for us shorties. The kitchen extension is more recent and we enjoyed sitting at the table in the evening, although the proximity of the aircraft coming into the nearby airfields took us a bit by surprise!
Our only wish was that, as keen gardeners, we had brought our gloves and secateurs with us to have more of a tidy up (we couldn’t resist having a good weed of the front path though). There is also a delightful grassed area at the bottom of the garden not mentioned in the details. If it had been mowed/maintained it would have been a great area to relax and catch up under the shade of the trees.

We had a very enjoyable stay at
Gassons View over Christmas. The cottage is lovely. The fireplace is original and it was great to light the fire. The beds were very comfy. Nice big kitchen and welcome goodies of milk, fresh eggs, butter etc were much appreciated.
Only negative comment is the fact we were only left one black bag for rubbish under the sink and dustbins and glass box were already full.

Quaint cottage.in a lovely village. Made use of the village pub and shop.
6 adults and a 10 month old baby in our party. Cottage not really suitable for a crawling baby because of the stone floors which were a bit grubby - fortunately we had brought a large mat for him to play on.
The kitchen was very well equipped - only thing we felt it needed were oven gloves! The ceiling in the kitchen area is very low which meant the 6 footers in our party had to stoop when using it.
3 easy chairs and a 2 seater sofa in the living room - not enough seating for a property that can potentially have 8 people staying. There is a chair in the kitchen, but the house information asks you not to move furniture around because of damaging the floor!
We understand the cottage had been used as a long let recently and felt it could have done with some maintenance to get it looking like the photos on the website.

We brought in the new year in this sweet cottage. Great kitchen, well equipped. Some rooms a bit low for a tall son. We situated for visiting the area.

Gasson's View is a charming old cottage with a nice light kitchen extension in the pretty village of Filkins in the Cotswolds. It was a lovely place to spend a family Christmas with four adults, two children and a dog. The area has lots of good walks, excellent local pubs with delicious food and a useful village shop just around the corner. Unfortunately, the condition of the cottage isn't quite as good as it should be. Whilst the kitchen had plenty of cooking utensils for Christmas lunch, the largest of the electric cooker rings wasn't working and we were only provided with two refuse bags for all our rubbish/recycling which proved a challenge. The downstairs shower room/toilet seems quite new but the upstairs bathroom is shabby and in need of renovation (the cold water tap for the bath hardly works, and the lighting is very poor). In addition, more attention needs to paid to housekeeping - there were several lightbulbs not working which made a difference in the short dark days of winter. We did have a Christmas tree in the living room which was a nice touch but can we suggest perhaps a welcome pack of tea, bread, biscuits etc. and some little bottles of bath toiletries.

We also appreciate your constructive points which we have shared with the Owner and Property Manager. The largest cooker ring seems to be working fine, however the Property Manager will continue to monitor this closely and will attend to the cold water tap for the bath. An initial supply of tea, coffee and sugar is provided and there are spare bin bags located under the sink, should these be needed. A partial refurbishment has only recently been completed and the Owner does have further plans for some additional works in the coming months. We hope that you will be back to visit the Cotswolds sometime soon!

Comfortable quaint cottage. Well equipped. Great location. Stairs very steep. Shame there was only a few bits of fire wood provided and there were a great deal of fly’s both dead and alive in the attic bedroom. However we enjoyed our stay and made the most of the lovely local pub.

Part of the charm of Gassons View, being a characterful period property, includes the low ceilings, exposed beams and steep spiral staircases, although we appreciate this won’t be suitable for all guests so highlight these features in the description. A starter supply of wood is provided for the open fire, although please note that we would not expect the quantity to last for the full duration of a stay, additional logs can be purchased locally. At this time of year, we do see sometimes see some cluster flies around the Cotswolds due to the change in weather but thankfully this lasts only a short while before they quickly disappear again. We’re pleased you had a great stay and hope to see you again sometime!

The bedrooms were excellent, although the bed in the smaller double room was slightly too small.
The stairs are a challenge for both old and young folks, so need some care when using.
The only shower is located within the kitchen, which meant a daily queue and lacked a little privacy.
The garden was in a poor state and the path to the larger part of the garden not particularly child or pet friendly, with overhanging branches and too easy access to the neighbour's garden. Both garden spaces could use some TLC.
The location and village is wonderful, with a friendly & convenient local shop and a local pub where food was exceptional.

Could have been perfect.

Many thanks for your feedback Gwen and, as a consequence, we have revised our listing to make it clear that the designated outdoor space associated with the property is the courtyard and all other space beyond that is a wild, additional area should guests choose to utilise it. The spiral staircase is integral to the property and we would suggest those who find this type of staircase on the trickier side opt for one of our other fantastic properties. The bed mentioned is listed as a 4' large single this means, if a party of 6 is using the property, this bed will be fabulously cozy! We are so glad you had a wonderful stay and do book again soon.

We spent a wonderful pre-Christmas weekend with our children and grandchildren in this very comfortable and atmospheric cottage. It was very well-equipped with a wonderfully practical kitchen which enabled us to cook a celebratory meal for us all and very comfortable lounge where we were able to enjoy an evening of charades in front of a roaring fire! We explored the quintessentially Cotswold village of Filkins and ended our weekend with a wonderful lunch at the Five Alls pub which has a well-deserved great reputation and was only 5 minutes walk from the cottage. The booking procedure was very straightforward and the staff and guest information was everything we would have hoped for.

The cottage was booked for a week to act as a base for my son's wedding at Filkins but also for my wife to enjoy a few days on our own; we know the Cotswolds reasonably well but not this particular area around Lechlade. The number of bedrooms allowed family members to stay with us. However due to unforeseen circumstances we had to curtail our stay to just 3 days. However, the cottage was superb and was just what we wanted for our family base. Spotlessly clean with excellent facilities, the kitchen had everything that you could have wanted. It opened out into a conservatory/dining area ideal for family breakfasts whilst the dining room was ideal for a meal, cooked in the impressive surroundings of the kitchen. The bedrooms were of ample size although we only used one, and an upstairs bathroom was supplemented by a lovely downstairs shower room. The heating was excellent and there was ample hot water. The most impressive thing though (apart from its proximity to the excellent Five Alls pub) was its 'homeliness'. It was a pleasure to come back after a day out and be able to relax in a warm, welcoming living room with an abundance of comfy sofas and armchairs (before heading to The Five Alls!!). It is with regret that we had to abandon our stay and we fully understand why it was not possible to reimburse us any of the fee, although we are grateful to StayCotswold for offering us a 10% discount on a future booking though them.

The cottage was very quaint but access was quite difficult for older guests due to the very narrow , steep staircases.
The kitchen area was very nicely fitted out and the garden space was great - we felt the bedrooms and upstairs bathroom could benefit from some modernisation though. The area was lovely and local pub very welcoming.

We enjoyed our week at Gasson’s View. The accommodation was roomy and the beds very comfortable. The house is well equipped and clean. The courtyard seating area is very pleasant and the garden is beautifully shaded, so ideal for the children. The village is well situated for visits to various Cotswold attractions. When the toaster broke, it was replaced very speedily and the staff at Staycotswold were very helpful.
