A lovely county castle surrounded by Belted Galloway cattle and sheep. The castle grounds have a fruit trees, herbs and vegetables. Tobias is truly a wonderful gentleman and host. He prepared an amazing breakfast both mornings which consisted of local flavors ( haggis, blood pudding, potato cakes, eggs, bacon and sausage). Tobias gave us a tour of the chapel and grand hall with interesting history. Baron James prepared a formal dinner which was also delicious. We are Maxwell descendants by DNA and name so the link to this castle is intriguing.
What can I say - I had not heard of Buittle Castle but my wife and I were looking for a place to celebrate our 10th wedding anniversary near Castle Douglas and the castle came up as an option on an internet search. An absolutely lovely setting in the countryside near Dalbeattie. We stayed in the Munches Room which was unbelievably cosy, even as the temperature dropped below freezing in the evening. Tobias was always welcoming, attentive and a mine of knowledge and interest concerning the property. An excellent cook, too.
