A pretty stone-built cottage set in its own fully enclosed garden overlooking the wild flower meadow and with glimpses of sea. It's a glorious walk to the seashore and a 2-3 minute amble to the landscaped loch and pavilion. Cutlar's Lodge has great character and cosiness. The sitting room has a welcoming open fire and we provide unlimited logs.

I can’t recommend the lodge enough. The location is perfect; quiet in lovely grounds and close to the sea. The lodge itself is like a home from home, with everything needed for a comfortable stay and immaculately clean.

This was our 2nd stay at Cutlar's Lodge at Orroland, and it was wonderful! The house was clean, cozy and inviting, and we appreciated the lemon cake welcoming us!
We often started our days with coffee and sweets at the Auchencairn Store, which was great. We walked around the grounds many times, appreciating the views, birds, sheep and beach, along with rainbows! Our stay was longer, and the house was a great base for us to explore the nearby environs, including the Threave Nature Reserve, to learn what they are doing differently for soil, cows, wildlife, pollinators and planting natives. We also went to Im-Merse at Annan, a conference about the importance of water and salt marshes for wildlife, and hiked in Kirkcudbright, including Doach forest, the cliffs along Auchencairn Bay, St. Mary's Isle, and elsewhere.
Thank you - we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves there!

Bethany, thrilled that you think of Orroland as "a gift of Scotland" ... and your review is a gift to us and to future guests to know what it is like here. Thank you. We're so lucky to have the splendid Auchencairn Village Store so close by and all those varied walking experiences within easy reach by car.

We have just had a wonderful break staying in Cutlar’s Lodge. The house is in a fabulous location with stunning grounds to enjoy. There are nice walks including beaches and countryside on your door step. The Lodge is stylish, roomy and very comfortable. We hope to make a return next year. Faultless.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Orroland. The owners really have created a very special place that didn’t disappoint. The grounds are stunning with the lakes, wildflower meadows and tump. We spent a lovely evening in the boathouse with the log fire roaring, playing board games. The walk down through the woodlands to the shore was beautiful. We were so excited to discover the waterfall and, coming from Norfolk, to see a red squirrel on the shore!
The house was spotlessly clean and had everything that we needed for a comfortable stay. The only improvement I could suggest is an additional toilet. We are a family of six and sometimes it was tricky with just the one bathroom.
Thank you for a wonderful stay in possibly the prettiest part of Dumfries and Galloway! We hope to return soon.

an extraordinary, magical location - so private and so well cared for. An abundance of wildlife and biodiversity. The only vaguely negative thing for me was the bed was rather firm - but that may just be me and I would like to have been able to see more of the grounds from the Lodge - it is surrounded by a high hedge and the view of the sea is obscured by the trees. There was only 2 of us and we did wonder how 6 people would get on with one loo! But on the whole it was delightful.

Wow, what can I say about Cutlars Lodge and Orroland! Orroland is a magical place like no other I have ever been. I was in awe the whole time I was there and did not want to leave. Exploring Orroland was like an exciting adventure every day. There is so much to see and do. The grounds are absolutely beautiful. The woods were covered in Bluebells and Wild Garlic, the gardens had an abundance of Rhododendrons in every colour you could imagine. The little lake is surrounded by lovely flowers and the Loch is stunning with its own Pavilion where you can light a fire and a Bat Tower. There are hidden surprises wherever you go. I loved walking through the grounds, early in a morning or late in the evening. I have never heard birdsong like it! We saw Red Squirrel, Deer, Kites and Buzzards. The walk to the Beach is steep and uneven, but well worth the effort, amazing views out to sea and the beach has the surprise of its own Tropical Garden, with Palm trees, a stream and a little bridge. So much thought and effort has gone into this amazing place by the Kennedy family (well done).
Cutlars Lodge is lovely and has everything you need whilst on holiday. There are wonderful views from every window. The lodge was spotlessly clean and comfortable. The Lodge has one bathroom which is downstairs which was okay for the 3 of us that went, but would benefit from another bathroom or maybe an extra toilet somewhere.
We had an absolutely perfect time at this amazing place and would not hesitate to return.
We have been holidaying in Kirkcudbright for the last 30 years + and must have passed the entrance to Orroland 100’s of times (if only we had known where that sign off the A711 led….

So happy to know you found Cutlar's Lodge comfortable and well-suited to your family. And very glad to know you found our new WiFi setup good and that you had coverage throughout the property. We've just invested in hardwiring the system rather than using hotspots that weren't working too well for us so it's brilliant to know that WiFi was one of your highlights.

Cutlars Lodge is beautiful and so well equipped with quality fittings throughout and for all ages with cot, high chair, wifi, huge flat screen smart TV - if you want to stay inside! It will easily sleep six and given the remoteness to towns the night times are so so dark. Outside you are next to the wild flower meadows, ponds, woods and numerous walks. We were blessed with sun and warmth for our week so spent most of our time exploring. We put up a peanut feeder outside the lounge window and were treated to red squirrels every day. The garden is fully enclosed and our two springer spaniels loved it! Attention to detail - we were provided with a basket of dog goodies to use, towels, throws, biscuits, first aid (not needed), even a feed bowl.
Off the beat and track but within ten minutes or so from shops in Kirkubright or Castle Douglas Orroland is very quiet and peaceful and relaxing is so easy. The track to the rocky shore is well worth taking - full of wild garlic and bluebells when we were there as were all the local woods.

We have enjoyed a September break in this lovely, peaceful place with artistic landscaped grounds that lead down to a dramatic coastline; it has much appeal for lovers of walks, nature and wildlife.

What a superb location to relax and tour the area. There was a little welcome box with milk, cheese and biscuits and bowls and a towel for the dog. (He enjoyed the dog biscuits!) The grounds are amazing with a few places to walk directly from the cottage. We were blessed with reasonable weather and seeing red squirrels running around the enclosed garden was delightful. The cottage is comfortable with almost everything you need. We would definitely stay there again. Booking was efficient.
Just one or two negatives. The cottage information file needs updating. Not all restaurants are still functioning. It would have been nice if someone could have seen us early on our stay to answer any questions, such as did we have access to the summerhouse on the shore which would have been good? There was no boat on the loch as it says in the information. To be out by 10:00am isn't easy, and another half hour or so would have been good. Packing up, taking the dog for a walk, having breakfast, stripping the beds and washing up so as not to leave anything in the dishwasher all takes time. We were up at 7 but were still 10 minutes late and the cleaner was waiting outside.
However it is a special place and we would go back.
If it were my cottage I might consider turning the front porch into an area to take off boots and hang wet coats, which tended to be a problem.

I read through the guest information book following your really helpful heads up about needing to update it and am well under way with edits. I'm sorry to have missed giving you a cheery welcome when I popped up twice following your arrival. Hopefully you were busy exploring. More space for boots and coats - yes, that would be very helpful for guests. I'm looking at options. Thank you so much for helping us improve.

We loved every minute of our stay. A family of 5 (4 adults, 1 teenager) with 3 dogs. The enclosed garden and surrounding grounds were not only beautiful, they were ideal for us, especially having access to the beach. The accommodation is spacious, comfortable and homely (1 bathroom!) We enjoyed board games and playing pool. We made use of the bbq and even had the log fire on one chilly evening. We explored local towns and villages. Did the Balcary Bay circular walk (stunning) and another near Kirkcudbright.

This was our second stay at Cutlar's Lodge and the Estate was exactly as we remembered it. The cottage was cosy, clean and had everything we needed, including the large, secure garden. Loved watching the nesting House Martins! The grounds looked fantastic and we were lucky with exceptional weather during this stay. Our 2 young boys loved roaming around the Estate and walks down to the shore (as did the dog!). Had some great days out around Dumfries and Galloway - particularly memorable were the beach at Dhoon Bay and Alpaca trekking near Kirkcudbright. All round, a fantastic week!

The instructions and final arrangements email from the owners were clear and helpful. We arrived at the cottage to find a lovely welcome pack not only for us, but also for the dogs - cheese, oatcakes and amazing local pickle for us, and blankets, treats, poo bags etc., for the dogs.
The house is very clean, comfortable and spacious and well equipped.
The grounds were amazing - the meadow is beautiful and we saw deer, hares and red squirrels. We loved the walk down to the beach too which was cool in the hot weather that we had.
We would (and already have) recommended Orroland to our friends - a lovely place to stay and unwind.
Thank you!

Magical, wonderful , inspirational . Orroland is a real hidden gem. The accommodation is clean and well equipped ( although a bread knife would have been handy for the utterly delicious sourdough purchased from the local store and from the farm shop at Loch Arthur ) . Wildflower meadow, a small loch , private beach , woodland interspersed with quirky installations , it is just fabulous. Location wise there is so much within an hours drive from secluded beaches to the Galloway Forest Park. The owners and staff were attentive and friendly. Special thanks to Sarah for her help. Very dog friendly , our lab had the time of his life.

If you want to sit on social media all day, Orroland is not for you , phone signal weak and broadband slow , but the TV does connect to Netflix etc , but that is no you go there.

We loved Orroland , relaxing and just perfect for us.

What a treat to receive your lovely review; thank you for taking the time to share your experience with others and to let us know about the things we can do to make a holiday here even better. Bread knife now in situ to perfect those lovely slow 'savour the flavour' breakfasts. It's been a great help to learn that our Wi-Fi wasn't up to scratch. We've had an engineer out to look and they reconfigured things so we now have consistent speeds of 90Mbps, meaning you can take video calls and stream videos for your whole group. So glad you and your dog had such a happy time and that you felt so at home here.

We had a fantastic stay at Cutlars Lodge with two young children and our dog. The cottage was extremely well equipped, the beds comfy and the house was nice and warm.
The setting is spectacular, we loved climbing the little hill, visiting the loch and wondering down to the rocky sea shore. The walks suggested from the lodge were manageable for a 3 year old and had some lovely views. We look forward to returning in the near future!

We were supposed to have stayed in August 2020 but Covid restrictions put paid to that. We were very pleased that we decided to roll the booking forward to 2021, as the beautiful and peaceful location was just what we needed after a year that has been difficult for everyone.

We loved the cottage, which had everything we needed although we were disappointed that there was no cake in the welcome hamper!)

The location was beautiful and tranquil and we had wildlife literally on our doorstep. We made the most of the glorious weather and either went on excursions or explored the immediate area every day. The village store in nearby Auchencairn does superb takeaways if you don't want to cook. The games room is a brilliant addition to keep children amused.

Orroland certainly is the ideal location for peace and quiet, interspersed with excitement from table football and pool competitions in the games room! Unfortunately, Covid has put a stop to me making a welcome cake for our guests for the moment, but I look forward to getting back to it soon and hope you enjoyed the other scrummy welcome treats. Auchencairn village shop is a winner for homemade takeaways, Friday curry night is amazing!

Excellent all round!

Everything was spotlessly clean when we arrived, the house was very well equipped and very comfortable. Peaceful and beautiful location.
Would highly recommend!
Plenty to do in the area, but also a great place to chill out and escape.
Honestly no complaints at all.
We hope to come back one day.

What can I say, it’s one of the most relaxing holidays we have ever had, they have though of everything, even down to the dogs, there was towels, bowls, poo bags, and even some biscuits for the dogs.
The lodge itself was very clean and tidy, we had the best nights sleep, the rooms are big, they have a boat house a minutes walk from the lodge, where we spent a few evening relaxing, the dogs loved the open space, if you are after a place to get away from everything this is for you, I highly recommend it. 10/10 from us.

This was our first visit to the area and are now planning when we can return. There is lots to see and do in the surrounding areas - walks, beaches, nice wee villages, historical attractions and more energetic activities at the Galloway activity centre. Just brilliant.

Cutlars lodge and orroland are picture perfect. Everything you need for a self catering holiday, beach, fields, wildlife. An amazing place.

Wonderful relaxing week where we could really relax and get away from it all. You can almost forget Covid...although cleaning to extremely high standard and no concerns from this side of thing. Got lost on way to beach on first day but ended up seeing deer and red squirrels so it was still worthwhile! Shame the boat wasn’t on the lake as we would have enjoyed this. Would definitely recommend if you need a break from everything. Lots of wildlife. Amazing views of stars if it’s not cloudy!

Glad you got to see the red squirrels and deer during your stay, such characters! The cleaning protocol for our cottages is rigorous to ensure we are all safe. Unfortunately, we had to remove the boat for now as we can’t guarantee it would be cleaned and disinfected between guests. Hopefully, sooner rather than later the boat will be back in its place, on our wonderful loch for everyone to enjoy. Best wishes Fiona

Another amazing stay at Cutler's Lodge and even more needed in this pandemic. Cottage and grounds were spotless as always and Fiona made us feel very welcome. Our favorite place to go with our two little Westies. Highly recommend to anyone. This place is so unique, so quiet, so beautiful in every way. We go most years now. Lovely beach walks and forest walks nearby as well.

We have just thoroughly enjoyed a week in Cutlar's Lodge. The house was perfect for us and the location is stunning. We couldn't believe the beautiful grounds right on our doorstep and made very good use of them. Lots of walks down to the beach, making fires and toasting marshmallows in The Pavilion, and so many trips to the top of the snail mound. The gardens are gorgeous - the perfect place to relax without any social distancing worries. Fiona was so welcoming and helpful- a huge thanks to her for helping to make our stay such a success. We hope to return !

We really enjoyed our short stay at Cutlar's Lodge. It was very warm and comfortale and provided plenty of space for our family of five, which included three teenagers. The game's room was an added bonus. We enjoyed a lazy couple of days exploring the estate and particularly enjoyed having access to the shore. We received a warm welcome and were confident that the cottage had been prepeared to a high-standard, in line with current Covid-19 guidance. We have recommended the estate to friends and hope to return in the future.

We were wowed by Orroland. What a very special place with so many quirky aspects and fabulous wildlife, including rabbits and herons, we even saw deer at the end of the garden and a hedgehog! It was a ten minute stroll down a beautiful footpath through the forest to the rocky shore. Our 11-yr-old loved the ‘rope route’ down the steep banking. The shoreline is stunning with many areas waiting to be discovered. We lay on huge slabs of rock watching boats - and Cumbria - in the distance. Cutlar’s Lodge is very close to the ‘snail mound’ - a huge landscaped swirl which our son and the dogs loved running up. It’s also close to the private loch on site which we enjoyed taking a kayak on. The gardens are immaculate offering the perfect environment for wildlife as well as convenient paths to explore the grounds. Cutlar’s Lodge itself was immaculate with everything you need for a self-catering holiday. The only thing it’s missing is an additional toilet/en-suite - if all three bedrooms were occupied there could be a queue for the bathroom. Although the cottage is so perfectly laid out I’m not sure you could fit one in! Fiona, the housekeeper, is so helpful and friendly and had left fresh flowers, coffee, chocolates and milk for our arrival. We loved Cutlar’s Lodge and will definitely be returning, thank you to all at Orroland!

The weather wasn't very kind on our visit which meant a very muddy kitchen floor (sorry about that) but whether exploring the grounds or staying in the house where it was very warm and cosy I certainly felt relaxed. The large bath was great to soak in after getting caught out in hailstones. Our dog loved all the scents and new places to explore.

Excellent about describes Cutlars Lodge. Five of us used all the beds and we didn’t feel cramped at all. Facilities were first class, views delightful and furnishings as comfortable as anyone could ask for. The fire was laid, cake and basics for refreshment provided and a warm basement games room with snooker and table football ready to use. We had splendid autumn weather but even if it had rained there was plenty of comfort and entertainment to enjoy.
Outside we really were impressed with the beauty of the well kept grounds. Walking to the beach was easily achieved, even for the septuagenarians. We enjoyed basking in the sun on the summerhouse decking and we’re thrilled by the sense of complete isolation. Robinson Crusoe had built a shelter with driftwood and someone has spent a great deal of effort and care and quite a bit of skill creating a garden down there.
The area is marvellous, lots to see and do and places to eat. Try Nickos for authentic Greek food in Castle Douglas.

A delightful place to holiday. Couldn’t ask for more.

We had a wonderful week in Cutlar's Lodge. The Lodge is spotlessly clean, well equipped and comfortable. The setting is glorious, a short walk from a rocky beach which we enjoyed exploring. Plenty to do in the area if you want it but if you want "restful " then just hanging around the lodge and grounds is great too. All in all would highly recommend ,and hope to be back. Also, despite sleeping six, a generous discount is available for couples staying at least a week ,which we gladly took advantage of.

Cutlers lodge is situated in an idyllic location and is kept to a very high standard in both facilities and cleanliness. It should be noted though there is no W/C upstairs in this property and the kitchen is lacking work surface for the capacity of this property. Thank you Fiona for the lovely Lemon drizzle cake and leaving tea and milk, much appreciated after a long drive.

Having stayed at both Abbotsway cottage and Cutlers Lodge I would recommend Abbotsway in favour of Cutlers.
Although Cutlers Lodge on first impressions is in a better position, because it is next to the formal gardens we were disturbed by the grass cutting for a couple of days (there is a lot of grass to cut and ride on mowers are not the quietist of machines!). The road next to Cutlers lodge would appear to be safe but unfortunately at times this was not so. Possibly guests using Orroland Lodge do not expect anybody else to be in the vicinity and a few (not all) would drive at a speed not conducive to the safety of pedestrians or dogs off the lead! The owners of Orroland estate cannot be blamed for the conduct of others but possibly a couple of speed bumps may slow the errant guest down!

Would I recommend this property,? a definite yes even with the observations above.

Thank you for your informative review. It's always very interesting for us when guests have stayed in both Abbotsway Cottage and Cutlar's Lodge to understand how they are viewed and compared. For mowing we try to aim for low impact times when guests are out exploring but at this time of year it’s a gamble as to when the mowing can be completed, dodging the showers! I will look at options to slow guest vehicles down - you would have thought a 90 degree corner would do it! All the best Fiona and Bob

We love coming to Orroland and this was our 5th stay , third time in Cultler's Lodge. The weather was glorious all week. The cottage was cosy, clean, had everything we needed and the grounds were superb and stunning as always. Our two westies love exploring the grounds and it can easily take up a few days just doing that. Fiona looked after us so well as always, hubby loved the lemon drizzle cake and knowing she is at hand if we need anything is always an added bonus. The cottage and grounds are so peaceful and there are many beautiful places to visit nearby too as well, lots of castles, sandy beaches, gift shops and cafe's and a lot of the places are dog friendly. Would highly recommend this lovely cottage to stay (and the other cottages there too). It is very unique as you feel you are there on the grounds on your own as it's that big you rarely see the other people staying but do know someone is at hand if you need them. Not stayed anywhere else as nice and look forward to going back again next year.

We've been to Cutlar's Lodge for a week almost every year since 2004, winter or summer. There are very few places where you can feel quite as completely away from it all as this. Over the years we've seen some of the area, and there are great places to visit if you want to go and find them, but our preference now is to loaf around at the cottage and on the beach, enjoying the silence and the views.

What a location! Overlooking quiet and funky landscaped gardens and a private loch with rowing boat. The lodge itself was well appointed and comfortable and had been maintained and cleaned to a very high standard. Fiona gave us a warm and unobtrusive welcome, and although we had no issues, would have had no qualms about contacting her. Very peaceful, with plentiful wildlife and a lovely walk to the private rocky shoreline. I have no hesitation in recommending Cutlars Lodge and the Orroland estate.

A great spot and very family friendly. Fiona was super helpful and on hand for any queries (the teddies for the kids were a lovely touch). A very cosy lodge, with unlimited wood for the fire. Games room with snooker table, table football and TV under the house was great for kids - including a well stocked toy supply and board games for all the family in the lodge. Walk to the beach (a bit steep in places for awareness) was also great fun and sun was out allowing us to sit on the balcony of the beach hut to take in the view (despite being October!). It's a great spot for walking and cycling too. Near to Kirkcudbright and trips to Cream O'Galloway, Cocoa Bean Factory and the zip wire at Laggan Outoor Centre made for a great week. Many thanks. Hope to come back again soon!

We travel abroad a lot due to work and have stayed in some fantastic places. However, our stay at Orroland was absolutely amazing.
The house was clean and well equipped with everything you could possibly need.
We took our labradoodle to the beach at Rockcliffe, we got engaged while we were there too.
We enjoyed our stay so much we have already booked to stay next year and we are thinking of Orroland as a possible wedding venue.
Fiona and Bob were very helpful and when I left my jacket behind, Fiona very kindly posted it back the next day.
I really can’t explain it but Orroland is such a special place and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it if you want to get away from it all . You really can’t beat laying in bed and listening to owls at night.

We're serial returners who've previously only stayed here in the winter. Orroland is the perfect place to totally get away from it all, at any time of year. It's hard to find this level of privacy in such idyllic surroundings. We're always given a very warm and personal welcome, though never intruded on. Cutlar's Lodge itself is a lovely building, and very comfortable. We always feel thoroughly at home in it.

Jane from York stayed at Cutlar's Lodge for 4 nights in June 2018

Jane, it was lovely to welcome you to Orroland in June so you could see the place in all its summer glory rather than cosying up in front of the fire for a change. It was super to hear that you enjoyed sitting out in the sunshine on the new patio which has so improved the garden experience. Winter or summer we're happy that Cutlar's Lodge is such a home-from-home for you. Best wishes, Melinda

As always. Fantastic welcome.

This is our second time at Cutlar's Lodge and Orroland. It won't be our last. Wonderful location. Total seclusion. The cottage is beautiful and well equipped for all needs. The dogs adored trying to catch pheasants and never succeeding. Lots of fresh air, stunning walking and relaxing in a fabulous place. The addition of Netflix/Amazon TV was welcome for the teenagers too and on less kind weather days/relaxing in the evenings.

This was our third stay at Cutlar's Lodge in as many years, and it won't be our last. The cottage is lovely, spotless, well equipped and the home made cake on arrival is always much appreciated - thank you Fiona. We find it's the perfect place to relax, the walk down to the beach is lovely and I think this is probably our two dogs favourite place in the whole world. We had three teenage boys with us who made good use of the games room and the Monopoly board. Even though it was August, it was a little chilly at night which gave us a perfect excuse to light the fire. It's great to have such a plentiful supply of logs in the garage as well. We love the peace and quiet of the setting, and the view through the trees down to the sea is wonderful at night when the moon is out.

Fantastic week at Orroland, weather was very changeable but that was no problem staying here as the grounds are beautiful no matter the weather . Our dog loved the garden and it was very secure . The lodge is very well equipped and just like being at home . Fiona looked after us well with a lovely cake , tea and flowers . I really don't want to recommend this wee slice of heaven as I don't want to share it but I couldn't do that to the lovely folk at Orroland so please come .

"We booked all three properties at Orroland for the annual family re-union; this was a first visit. Our gathering had diverse backgrounds and ages between 1 and 77 and yet all were delighted with the location (although the 1-year-old was somewhat reticent on the subject). The properties were clean, comfortable, comprehensively equipped, prepared to a high standard and had that "difficult to achieve" feeling that it was your family home for the duration of stay. I go on holiday to "get away from it all" but, to the modern generation, the cold spots of useful broadband speeds might be an annoyance. However, add the child friendly and beautiful surrounds and easy access to some of the best of Galloway and it is hardly surprising that we intend going back next year.”

Beautiful setting for this excellent holiday home. The property was spotless & we were made to feel most welcome on arrival too.
The extensive grounds of the estate are fabulous & the enclosed lodge garden was safe & brilliant for our two dogs. Only slight negative was that there is no upstairs bathroom with the two upstairs bedrooms but this doesn't detract from this lovely cottage.

A terrific location and especially enjoyable if you have dogs that love to run around. Beautiful cottage, well appointed and very helpful and friendly folks on hand to answer any questions and assist as required. Really pleased that we decided to return after so long and plan to go back again sooner next time.

If really looking to provide constructive feedback, we may suggest an outside tap and hose which we would have welcomed to clean the mucky paws of our dogs, and only having one toilet/bath/shower can be a challenge if there is a full house, but we managed perfectly well.

Great place, highly recommended!

What a wonderful setting and a lovely homely cottage with everything you could want, could not have asked for more ( ok mid teen temps and solid sunshine would have been v nice...but hardly going to happen).
Made to feel very welcome and a lovely cake from Fiona was very much enjoyed.
We found Cutlers lodge to be very comfortable and what fantastic views to wake up to every day, along with wonderful walks and great photo opportunities.
We will certainly be booking again and very much looking forward to another stay with you, thanks guys.

We came across Orroland Holiday Cottages while searching for a dog friendly property with an enclosed, secure garden in a quiet location. We could not have been more pleased with what we found.
The property was warm and inviting, with an open fire and unlimited logs. In a very secure and spacious garden for the dogs to run around. The kitchen was extremely well equipped, with everything you would ever need.
The grounds were stunning. We hope to come back in each season to see the change in colours.
We enjoyed exploring the area, visiting the many beaches, historical sites and forests.
We would thoroughly recommend these cottages and the surrounding areas.
Thank you to Melinda, Fiona and the rest of the Orroland Team for such a warm welcome.

We hired out the property for family to stay in for the week of our wedding at Orroland Lodge, however we have stayed at the property ourselves a number of times. Its perfect for couples of small families, and worked particularly well for the family who used it which included my elderly grandmother who could sleep downstairs, with the bathroom on ground level she didn't have to navigate the staircase at all. Its a fantastic place for those who enjoy nature and walking, or those who just want to sit outside/in front of the fire with a good book. Cutlars has fantastic views. Our family had stayed at Cutlars some time ago, and were extremely impressed with how it had been updated and modernised inside. Everyone loved the cake and found it perfectly clean.

We both thoroughly enjoyed our short 4 night break at Orroland as did Dylan our Yorkie.
The cottage was lovely and had everything we could need, including a splendid cake from Fiona!
Fiona was happy to welcome us despite our late arrival and point out the walks available in the lovely grounds and gave a useful insight in to the local area.
Being able to walk right down to the beach is a great bonus.
The holiday passed all too quickly but we hope to return before too long.
Many thanks.

Our family of 5, including 3 teens (plus dog) stayed in August. We really enjoyed our stay and made great use of the pool table. Orroland is lovely and we enjoyed our walks down to the pebbly beach with loads of interesting things on the strandline and in the rock pools. Delicious cake on arrival, thanks Fiona! The only minor thing, which we knew beforehand, is that you do need to use the car to go anywhere - except for an Abbey and café (which was excellent), about 1/2hrs walk away. All in all though we had a great time and would stay again if in the area.

Six of us had the most wonderful time at Cutlar's Lodge for 11 days! Most evenings we had a cozy fire going reading, talking or watching a movie! And the days were idllyic driving to various beaches, getting our feet wet, even swimming one day, and visiting quaint villages, talking to natives, hiking! And just walking around Orrolands' gardens was a treat! So we are very thankful to the Kennedys for providing such a beautiful place for us! Judy

It was fun to have you all staying ... my daughter thinks she counted 20 bikes! We are very lucky to have such world-class mountain biking trails so close thanks to the 7Stanes.

Our four day stay began with the warm welcome of cake and fresh flowers. The spotless Cutlar's Cottage was perfect for our family break, The comfy ground floor twin room next to the beautiful bathroom suited Granda to a T, a travel cot and high chair was provided for the baby, the kitchen with all mod cons was perfect and the snooker/table tennis room was a bonus. The grounds provide plenty of opportunity for a stroll - even in the rain, and the walks to the beach and around the surrounding countryside were not too taxing. All in all a lovely place to stay.

We had a rather unusual reason for coming, and we did have high expectations ~ but even THEY were left standing by what we actually found at Cutlar's Lodge! We've seldom been anywhere so peaceful or so thoughtfully arranged, with unlimited logs for the fire, and the welcome of home-made cake! We slept like tops in comfortable beds, and walked down through the woods to the Solway shore, and played on the flotsam-built pirate ship ( our average age is about 66! ).

We chose this cottage very carefully as we needed to be close to Dumfries over Christmas, have internet access, and bring our dog with us Lovely to be greeted on arrival with home-made mince pies and wine, and to find the house tastefully decorated for Christmas. We added some of our own lights and trimmings, and the cottage quickly became a true 'home from home' -- warm and beautifully furnished throughout. The kitchen had everything we needed to prepare a full Christmas dinner, and we enjoyed the log fire in the sitting room (logs provided). The bathroom is very well fitted out, but note that it is downstairs and so not so convenient for the upstairs bedrooms. The games room was fun but the presence of both a pool table and table-tennis table made it impossible to play either seriously, so might be better to stick to one (we vote for the pool table!). The proximity of the sea (Solway Firth) via a short walk through the estate to a rocky beach was a real bonus. Our dog had as happy a holiday as we did! If you are looking for a cottage that is totally private, surrounded by countryside full of wildlife, with walks from the doorstep, this is for you.

We live in a very tranquil location ourselves, so staying in Cutlar’s Lodge was like home from home.

We felt very welcome and spoiled right from the start, especially finding the delicious lemon drizzle cake and the freshly ground coffee left out for us! We felt truly pampered, and felt as though every possible effort had been made to make sure we enjoyed our stay.

The cottage is so much more spacious than we realised, and the grounds have been a joy, even at this time of year. We have resolved to return in the spring to see the Rhododendrons and perhaps the summer too!

Thank you so much for making us feel so welcome.

Super short stay with a well organised and equipped cottage. Breathtaking grounds with plenty of walking to do in the area. Enjoyed our row on the lake in the private rowing boat and the meander down to the sea shore especially. The cake on arrival was a nice touch. Very quiet area so great to 'get away from it all'.

Booked Cutlar’s Lodge at the last minute and we are so glad we did. It is the nicest place we have EVER stayed!

We have seen the red deer, rabbits, red squirrels, buzzards and lots more. The peace and quiet was just what we needed. From the minute we woke up until we went to sleep it was so tranquil. The walks, the loch, the crackling fire, the evening sky – the delicious cake on arrival – we can’t thank you enough. The dogs have loved it too.

Our only regret – we didn’t book long enough!

A cosy, comfortable, cottage in incredible surroundings with fantastic views. Probably the best equipped kitchen I have stayed in, plenty of cutlery and plates too so no putting on the dishwasher after each meal. Nothing seemed too much trouble for our hosts with really helpful information before we arrived, and they popped in to check everything was OK. Home made cake and flowers to welcome us on arrival - a simple gesture but made such a difference. A short walk through woods to a private beach and a lovely loch with a rowing boat - our boys learnt to row on this holiday. Will definitely be going back here. Such a relaxing location - the only sounds are birdsong and the rustling of the wind in the trees. Our dogs loved it too. Doggie heaven.

We recently had a small family wedding at the Orroland estate and some of our guests stayed at Cutlar's lodge for a week. They all thought it was a beautiful cottage in wonderful surroundings. They commented on how there was a great balance between a country cottage style with modern fittings. It was comfortable and immaculate throughout. The team at Orroland ensured that everything was going well and we knew they were on hand to help with anything our guests required which helped us to relax for our wedding! We would definitely recommend a stay at Cutlar's lodge or any of the other sites on the estate.

Another wonderful week spent in Cutlar's Lodge. Just as we remembered it - a comfortable home from home. The bathroom has been replaced since our last visit 4 years ago and is a welcome improvement. A peaceful and relaxing house with outlooks over the beautiful landscaped gardens and the sea. My favourite spot in the morning is the sunny porch to enjoy a coffee and read a few chapters of a book before the kids rise. Who could ask for more?

It would be great to see you both again later in the year when there will be a noticeable change in the wildlife habitat for you to photograph. Do remember that you won't need to bring your “cottage set up” box of goodies, as like you mention there is everything you need at Cutlar's Lodge! I hope you loaded up the log fire, used an abundance of the free firewood and kindling provided and twiddled the thermostat so you could enjoy the unlimited central heating when indoors. We enjoyed showing you all the best wildlife spots at Orroland and look forward to more outdoor expeditions with you both. Fiona and Bob

Excellent week at Orroland where both the accommodation and the estate were brilliant. We love this area of Scotland and it's great to know that gems like this exist. The lodge is especially good for dog lovers with fantastic walks right from the door and a huge variety of walks just a short drive away. Orroland is only 15 minutes drive away from both Kirkcudbright and Castle Douglas and only half an hour from the Galloway Forest Park (for dark skies experience). Thoroughly recomment Orroland for all lovers of peace and quiet.

We had driven past the gate posts to Orroland on many occasions (very Bram Stoker) and imposing and finally made the decision to test the waters. It is such a pity we did not do so when we first saw them!

This place is mind-blowing. The owners have gone to great lengths and beyond to provide a magical place to holiday in. The thought and hard work that has gone into it is unbelievable. A beach hut and garden for all to use complete with chairs and tables on a fabulous sun deck, a cabin on the shores of a loch complete with tables, chairs, barbecue and boat, a bat tower, a tump (swirly hill to walk up), a large pond, impressive garden ornaments ..... I could go on but would not be able to do the place justice!

The cottages are beautiful. We stayed in Cutler's Lodge and there is nothing we could add to make it more enjoyable. Fabulous place with fabulous views over the gardens. We were lucky to have sun and 70 degree temperatures so had breakfast on the lawn every day - sun, warmth, views to die for and nature at its best with birdsong as background music - heaven. We walked around the tump; love it. We did the beach walk a few times and relaxed in the beach hut with our white German Shepherd which was brilliant! We sat in the cabin at the loch but the boat was too strenuous! Oh yes, and we used the games room under Cutler's Lodge. I did say everything had been thought of didn't I?

Don't want too many people to know about Orroland as we need to book again for later in the year!

We have had a lovely restful week in an extremely comfortable cottage.
Miles (the Spaniel) thought he’d come to dog heaven and became very over- excited by all the new smells! We all really enjoyed the walks down to and around the beach – relaxing for us and lots of sniffing around for Miles.

If, like us, you have a lively , energetic dog I’d recommend the walk up Screel Hill. There has been a lot of wood harvesting recently so it is perhaps not looking its best, but the views were fantastic. Barhill Woods , just outside Kirkcudbright was also a good place for Miles to run around off his lead.

We came to Orroland knowing very little about it and in search of a week's pure rest and relaxation. It delivered on every point and exceeded our hopes. Cutlar's Lodge is one of the most comfortable holiday cottages we have ever stayed in (and we have tried many in all corners of the country). It is also full of character, from original fixtures such as the sitting room fireplace to the fittings such as full length curtains to keep out the cold. What we particularly enjoyed about it was that, while it's of a high standard, it is not crammed to the gunnels with either designer or Ikea gadgets and furniture. It is a homey place, somewhere in which to settle in, slow right down, and simply enjoy for what it is.

We had a wonderful stay, all the special touches were really appreciated, especially the toy box! My only tiny complaint is that it was very cold in the upstairs twin room, only 13 degrees overnight. The owners and housekeeper were very friendly and helpful. Our dog and and toddler loved all the open space and the walk to the beach. The bathroom and kitchen were spotless and very well equipped. Having unlimited logs for the fire was great as it was lit for most of our stay! Kirkcudbright had everything we needed. We would love to come back in the summer!

Our second visit to this fabulous cottage. The location is just beautiful - set in the grounds of Orroland, the views in every direction are stunning. You can walk down to the private beach (rocky) and around the grounds, the owners have invested so much time and money into improving the whole site.

The cottage is spotlessly clean, very well equipped with a log fire (with free logs), excellent quality furnishings, bedding and towels. And a huge bath! It is also dog friendly.

Could not fault it in any way. Would highly recommend.

An excellent cottage in an excellent location, the Orroland estate is a perfect place for a get- away- from -it - all holiday.

This property however would benefit from an addtional bathroom/toilet upstairs.

We had an amazing time in Orroland. We loved being out in the country with so much space to wander in. We loved being near the sea and having the freedom to explore the estate.

The cottage was brilliant with everything we needed and we enjoyed the log fires in the evening. Our 2 year old grandson loved all the toys provided and the garden was safe for him and our new puppy.

We walked and walked, even in the rain ,until the puppy was exhausted and so were we, but in a good way.

The local pub did good food and we had a great time visiting Maebey Farm Park and Threve castle.

I am sure we will be back - thank you

Thank you for your lovely review. We are so pleased Cutlar's Lodge and the estate provided everything you needed for a fun family holiday. It was great to see little H so happy and jolly with all that Orroland has to offer and making full use of all the toys in the cottage. It's great that you enjoyed the log fires and made the most of the place. We're happy to hear you had a good experience at The Smugglers Inn in Auchencairn; important to be able to recommend our local pub.

Two and half hours from stress to relaxation!

After a short trip in the car I arrived with my dog to see what I expected. A lovely house in a lovely location. I had walked the roads surrounding it on google maps, I had looked at the satellite images, I had looked at every photo on the Orroland web site. And now I was here! The hour long circular walk that is mentioned in the house folder is great as it's a quiet road. The walk down to the shore is also good although I did feel a bit isolated as a woman on her own as it's quite enclosed in the trees but that's just me. Great rock pools to explore and I'm sure if my dog hadn't jumped in them first I might have spotted something! The house itself is well equipped and very comfortable. The lemon drizzle cake was much appreciated and I didn't have to share lol. My husband asked if I brought a piece home for him - sorry : ) . Fiona I would love the recipe! I only had one slight hiccup and that was when a white terrier type dog jumped over the wall and nipped my dog but that could happen anywhere. I am looking forward to a return visit soon with my husband. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at Cutlar's Lodge and would recommend it to anyone.

Suggestion - a tea tray would be useful unless I didn't find it, sitting in the garden was bliss in the sunshine with a pot of tea and a book, will bring my sun lounger next time!

Two and a half hours away for you to feel so relaxed and stress free, how wonderful. After your thorough research on Orroland we are so pleased it lived up to your expectations. I do hope that Sophie Doodle got a little taste of the lemon drizzle cake ... the recipe will be there on your arrival next time you visit! Thank you for your suggestion, we always listen and respond to feedback so a tray will be ready for your tea break in the sun and of course extra cake for your husband. Thank you for your understanding about the dog; no more walks round the lanes of Orroland - farm fields only.

Cutler's Lodge is a beautiful cottage in a peaceful setting. It has every home comfort and is spotlessly clean. It is well equipped for a self catering holiday having all the usual pots, pans etc, The double bed was extremely comfy with quality bedding, ideal fir a good nights sleep! The cottage is set in an amazing spot with lots of space around the property as well as a huge garden. Perfect for a get away from it all holiday. Perfect space for our dog who loved the many walks in the area. Would definitely go back!

What a fantastic review! Our future guests at Cutlar's Lodge will appreciate all the suggestions you left in the visitors book for places to explore in the local area that you, Kev and your fine dog Dougie enjoyed. So glad you enjoyed the space of Cutlar's Lodge; it's spacious for 6 let alone 2! Great that you noticed the comfort of the top of the range Hypnos bed, a good sleep will be just what was needed after all your adventures. Best wishes, Fiona and Bob

Thank you so much for this excellent review. We are so pleased that you, Richard and of course your adorable dogs Elijah, Delilah and Ezrah all had such a relaxing time at Orroland. How fantastic that you were able to recharge your batteries by exploring Orroland and all its interesting surroundings then relaxing by the log fire in the evenings. Hopefully the weather will be just as glorious the next time you all visit. Fiona

I have marked the comfort as ok - this is only due to the lack of seating for 6 people. The lounge area could only accommodate up to 5 on the sofa and chairs, luckily one of our party was unable to come at the last moment but if she came one person would have to sit on the floor.
Also, the amount of towels supplied (I know we could have requested more) there were no individual handtowels which would have been much more hygienic and could also be used to dry ones hair.

Other than these couple of issues, our stay was lovely, great personal touches such as having a dog lead to use in case we forgot ours and a little bowl of doggy treats plus the coffee and cake on arrival - very nice.
Would recommend to parties of 5 and under but not 6

Hello, I'm glad you liked the welcoming cake, real coffee and dog treats! It's always nice to arrive to something home-made isn't it. We provide matching 3-seater sofa and 2 armchairs in the sitting room. As the room is more spacious without the additional chair at times when it isn't needed we provide the comfortable seating for two additional guests in the porch, next door to the sitting room. Don't worry we wouldn't expect our guests to sit on the floor. Good idea about hand towels, now that you mention it I think it is quite wrong that we don't provide them for everyone, just in bathrooms and kitchens. I shall order more tomorrow.

LOVED it.

We adored this holiday - fabulous cottage in a wonderful, idyllic location, and run by such friendly and fun hosts who seem to have made a real effort to consider exactly what you need on a family holiday. We, and our children, had a ball and will definitely be back. So, so much to see and explore. My favourite family break yet. Thank you so much!

It was the first cottage of four in our holidays and we don't see how the other cottages could be better or even equally good. It is just great.
The only thing what we could have wished for is a village a little bit closer. But that's just nitpicking.

What a joy to hear that you were impressed by Cutlar's Lodge. I'm glad you found it a good base and it was fun that you shared images of your exploration of Orroland with us on Facebook while you were staying. The walk to the shore is always a firm favourite. Glad you found the hills and quiet country roads around us a good challenge for keeping up with your running. Yes, it's about 3.5 miles to Auchencairn and we're working on a supplier network so that local deliveries will help to bring the shops to Orroland! Fruit and veg from a nearby market gardener, butcher's meat, Tesco.com, ASDA and Majestic Wine deliveries can all be arranged and we're looking to extend this. We're listening to feedback and always grateful for it; watch this space! I hope you have a brilliant time on the rest of your grand tour of the UK. Melinda

this has been our second visit to orroland, the house exceeded our expectations. we loved the decor and space the accommodation provided, how surprising to find everything on hand. the grounds are fantasic and we noticed a few new planting additions since last time. due to work commitments, as a widespread family we needed a peaceful and comfortable place to rest and gather on a relaxing family holiday, orroland is the perfect family retreat, we love it.
I love abbotsway for the family kitchen and layout, I love cutlers for the space and enclosed garden, I cannot choose between the two, however having a new addition to the family of an 18 week pup, he definately endorsed the garden, sorry grandad for the hole on the grass near the gate.
we will definately return, hopefully with not to many more additions to the family.
what a wonderful place to stay, thank you.

Thank you for taking the time to review your second stay at Orroland. I always find it so interesting to discover which of the two cottages, Abbotsway or Cutlar's, is favoured by families who have stayed in both. There is no pattern at all! It's so good that each of the cottages has its own character and styling, features and attractions so that each family can choose based on what's important to them. It's music to my ears that you like the decor and that you found it spacious for four adults. The fact that the garden kept your beautiful bouncy pup safe and free is the ultimate testimonial for any holiday cottage claiming a fully enclosed garden! Thank you for returning. Best wishes, Melinda

Cutlars Lodge is located on a lovely exceptionally well maintained estate which meant that our family had freedom to explore attractive woodland and a rocky beach. There was also an unusual large spiral earthwork and ponds close by. The property had a modern dining kitchen and pleasant enclosed lawn for ball games. It was very tastefully decorated and the children enjoyed use of a games room as well as having fun lighting fires each evening. The property would suit people who like tranquility and have an interest in wildlife, walking and star gazing (the dark sky national park is nearby) . The nearest town is 20 mins drive away, there are a number of castles and gardens as well as beaches suitable for day trips and Loch Ken has a good adventure sports centre as well as red kites to observe.

We loved our short break at lovely Cutlar's Lodge and were hugely impressed by the house and grounds. It was our first holiday with our 1 year old son and I thought it was the perfect place for a family holiday. The lodge had everything we needed from a highchair to a box full of toys, and was in immaculate condition. The sitting room is cosy, with a lovely fire, and the dining and kitchen areas are spacious. I loved everything about the accommodation. The setting is peaceful and a great place to get away from it all - my son enjoyed toddling around the grounds looking for pheasants. As well as relaxing in Orroland Estate (a rocky beach is a short walk from the lodge), it is a good base for exploring the local area. (I'd recommend the Colvend Coast and the Galloway Forest Park).

I would definitely recommend Cutlar's Lodge and look forward to another holiday there in the near future.

Thank you for your brilliant review of your stay at Cutlar's Lodge. I'm so pleased you enjoyed staying at Cutlar's and that you found it well equipped for your 1 year old son. I'm glad the toys kept him happy indoors and it sounds like the pheasants were a highlight out of doors. October is a lovely time of year at Orroland, with the Autumn colours, migrating birds, bright stars and log fires. I enjoyed meeting you all and it was great to discuss your interests and rummage through the leaflets to find the ones that would answer the brief. Great that you packed such a lot of exploration into your stay!
