Elizabeth Fort dates to the early 17th century. The fort has played a hugely important role in Cork city since then. The walls of the fort offer a fantastic and panoramic view of the city below.

  • Sleeps 3 people. 1 Double Room and 1 Single Room.
  • Pets are not permitted.

Getting the keys to the Fort!

Was pretty cool to be letting ourselves into an empty fort at night after having a pint at the pub right outside! Host was very flexible with our arrival time changing as we drove from Dublin with stops. Parking is dicey, we found right outside later at night but tougher during the day. Purchased breakfast food at the shop across the street and plenty of great places to walk to at night. The Old Town Whiskey Bar was fun, and if they don’t have live music they have other pubs close with someone with local music to enjoy. Also enjoyed the English market close by. Budget a bit of time to be there when the fort is open so you have access to the walk around the top!

Thank you for your review, when we took on this building, due to the nature of this popular tourist site, cars are not allowed inside the Fort. The local Fort guides are great if you arrive during the day to drop your luggage etc at the gates before you go into the city to park your car, which is a short walk down the lane. This city is brilliant for exploring and shopping, two days are never enough!

We loved our stay, and Geraldine and Grace from the Landmark Trust were fantastic.

We had a very special stay in the house as my mother and her family lived there from 1943 to 1964, and it was the first time they visited the house since they left. Three of my mother's siblings were born in the Garrison house, so it was a lovely trip down memory lane.

Thanks to Geraldine for being so lovely and Grace was a dream to deal with.

A second stay on site but in the other house..we had a fabulous time. It is ideally positioned for enjoying the delights of Cork City..and further afield..we took buses out to Kinsale and Blarney..and walked out to concerts in Musgrave Park..would highly recommend. Watch out though for the parking situation. We left the car behind this time. Thanks to Geraldine again..houses are very well equipped with all you could ask for. We will come back again hopefully.

Thank you for your lovely review. These city centre houses are very popular and mostly booked by international guests through booking.com, its lovely to have a review from our own booking website so the review can be checked through UpFront. This is an amazing experience when the fort door close and the place is quiet, there is parking just across the river, I do recommend to drop off bags first then park the car, and on check-out pick up your car then the bags at the fort, the staff are very friendly and will help as much as they can.

Fantastic location, felt really special to be staying in a fort in the city centre of Cork.

We have been fans of the Irish Landmark Trust since 1996 and Garrison House was our most recent stay.
It is a beautiful property with a lovely warm atmosphere and everything you need for a self-catering holiday.
Geraldine was most accommodating and we look forward to returning to stay in Parade House, the sister property
Feeling enclosed and enwrapped by the sturdy walls when the perimeter gate is closed in the evening is wonderful.

Thank you for your great review. Night time in the fort is an amazing experience once the public gates close. Everything you need is just outside those ancient old gates as the city center is only a 5 minute walk away.

Superb all round. Great restoration. Easy walking access to city. Most places within 10 min walk. Although no dedicated parking is provided, with the assistance of the manager, we found free parking directly outside the Fort. The property manager and staff onsite were super helpful. Highly recommended.

The accommodation "Garrison House" is situated within the Elizabeth Fort and conveys the atmosphere of the old fortress. As a resident one enjoys the peace and protection the site provides especially in the morning and evening hours. The house is well-equipped and has enough space for three persons.

The excellent assistance of the house manager is particularly noteworthy.

Thanks a lot, Geraldine!

We are regular visitors to Cork. But we have only just discovered Garrison House. What a splendid location and how comfortable Garrison House is for two or three people. Geraldine, who manages the property, is a star. And the Fort staff are also extremely helpful and friendly. (Hope they get pats on the back!)

We have stayed in 30+ UK Landmark Trust properties. This was a marvellous first for Irish Landmark. A superb organisation with a brilliant web site (more pats on back?)

Interesting and historic place right in the heart of Cork and a great location for exploring the city. At the end of a day's sightseeing, you can close the doors and enjoy the peace and quiet of your very own fortress. Comfortable bed, well appointed kitchen, everything you could want. Geraldine was very friendly and helpful, making sure we had everything we needed for our stay. Would definitely recommend Irish Landmark holiday properties.

Beautiful house in the heart of the center but sooooo quiet. Very clean with all mod cons (bar mugs for tea - were Irish!) . beds very comfy. Location is fab and to be in a fort even better. Can seem pricey if its only 2 people but i cant begrudge it as it was a great experience.
Did not miss the TV one bit as radio was excellent.

A beautiful spot and a real sense of being steeped in history whilst staying in this quaint cottage. Super to have the fort to explore as well and the lovely little museum on site, so many interesting stories from the time when it was a women's prison. Very central, easy to walk everywhere, a visit to Nano Nagle's Place nearby is a must- we enjoyed a superb brunch in the Good Day Deli and another interesting museum visit which tells the amazing story of Nano Nagle. The tour guardians of the fort were so friendly and helpful.

We booked Garrison House last minute for a weekend break with our 13 year old son. The location is just fantastic, minutes walk from Patrick Street and from the back of the house you can see St Finbarr's Cathedral. We loved staying someplace that had so much history attached to it. The guys working at the Fort are a dream and gave us lots of tips including good fishing spots which we took on board and discovered places we would never have found. The pub outside the main gate was also very welcome and welcoming. This is a house of character, it reminded me of an old aunt's house. It is super comfortable and had everything we needed. If you are into something a little quirky and not looking for nouveau riche luxury, this is great place. It would have been wonderful if we could have parked in the grounds of the Fort, maybe that is something that could be looked in to - that is a suggestion and we managed perfectly without that. Would definitely go back!

I previously stayed in Elizabeth Fort and parking on site was allowed. The current loss of parking is an inconvenience. There is ample space and an agreement could be be reached with Cork city council re accessing the fort with due regard to fellow visitors. One full day in a Qpark cost €25, I’d prefer to give that money to ILT or Cork city council. Having to move your car/update your ticket between 08:30 and 18:30 every 2 hours is not conducive to a relaxing holiday.

Irish Landmark Trust replied more than 1 year ago
Thank you for taking the time to review your trip. We are sorry to hear that the issue with parking affected your stay and we hope you did enjoy your time there despite this. Unfortunately it is beyond our control that Elizabeth Fort will remain a car free zone in the long term. We will ensure that the wording on our website reflects this going forward.

A most enjoyable stay.

We greatly enjoyed our stay in Garrison House. The house was clean, comfortable, and with easy access to the city. The view from the ramparts around the Elizabeth Fort was spectacular. Liz Hughes (who looks after the property) was away for the w/e, but left good instructions about getting into the Fort at times when it wasn't open to the public, and even went so far as to give us her husband's telephone no, in case we had any problems with the heating. The shower worked well, as did the cooking equipment. Our only (slight) grouse was that we weren't able to open one of the bookcases in the sitting room, but otherwise all worked very well. The two chaps in the Admissions hut were also most helpful when we asked them about places in the city, etc.. It can be warmly recommended.

We really had a wonderful stay. It's in great condition and has a lovely, calming atmosphere. It's just great to have your own, unique house in the middle of the city! There are fantastic bars nearby (Tom Barry, The Oval Bar) and cafes (Alchemy). Liz Hughes is a lovely person and a great house manager who gave us really useful tips for our stay in Cork (which is a great city). We cannot wait to return. Thanks very much Irish Landmark for another great property.

The refurbishment of these two houses is marvellous ... and I have seen the "before" photos! ...and the furnishing and equipping of the house was first class. It was a pleasure to work in the kitchen - we self-catered so well for Breakfasts & one Dinner. Previously unfamiliar with the area of Cork city, we were thrilled to discover the area. So close to everywhere on foot, as we always enjoy the English Market but we liked being "off the beaten track". and that we surely were. in Elizabeth Fort, with its 16th century origins. We explored the fairly new Nano Nagle Centre; how delightful this place is with its Good Day Deli. Garrison House was so very comfortable, warm in what was a very cold weekend, Such a great place to spend, reading and listening to radio and having a leisurely dinner. The guided tour of the Fort which we took on Sunday was excellent. Yet again, we experienced a terrific House Manager in Liz.

Although we are both locals from cork we really enjoyed our weekend break in garrison house. Loved having the whole fort to ourselves (highlight was seeing the locked gate from the inside!) and house itself was very well equipped and so central to everything. Incredibly quiet too which I didn’t expect , those fort walls must be VERY thick ! Would definitely recommend.
