The silence which surrounds this rural property is part of the charm for our visitors. Beyond the gate, in the privacy of a small garden, guests can enjoy great peace and tranquility - and the small patio offers a wonderful opportunity to dine 'al fresco' on balmy summer evenings. This is an intensely romantic building.

  • Sleeps 2 people. Double Room.
  • Welcomes 1 pet.

This place just exudes magic! All the touches like castle windows, the stone spiral staircase, the vaulted bedroom ceiling, the antiques, stone fireplace with stonecutters initials, made this truly live up to its description of being a miniature castle. Theresa was an incredible host, so warm and welcoming that I felt right at home immediately. Everything was immaculately clean. I would definitely stay here again.

We stayed at a Landmark Trust property in England back in 2007 and it was absolutely fabulous. It was historic, clean, fully of antiques and quality furniture and amenities. Unfortunately, our last visit was a huge disappointment. First, we met the innkeeper and don’t feel the issues are her fault. She worked very hard to get the property ready for our visit. I believe she is not provided the proper time to clean and resources. The property has so much potential and the outside is fabulous. The inside needs a makeover. The majority of the furniture is worn out. The bed is not comfortable. The furnishings are old and dirty and didn’t have the feel of antiques they were more like old garage sale items. The place was infested with spiders. They were on the walls, floor and in the bed. The top of the dresser in the bedroom is full of spider eggs. If my wife would have seen all that I did she probably would have insisted we left for a hotel. This was meant to be a highlight of our trip to Ireland, which we loved but ended up being a disappointment.and the worst place we stayed.

Lorraine Bell - Operations Manager replied 8 days ago
I am sorry you were disappointed with your stay. Landmark Trust UK is a different charity than Irish Landmark, but our purpose is the same. While the UK has a great funding pot for their buildings, we rely on grants and guest stays to fund and keep our properties in their best condition. I would like to give you some background in the live conservation happening at Anne's Grove in the months leading up to Janaury 2025 and happening at this moment. We rarely close our buildings unless significant restorations are taking place that would affect our guest experience, we need to generate as much funding as possible to put back into the continious maintenance of our properties. There is a schedule of works happening at Anne's Grove that must run in order to acheive optimal results for this amazing property. External repairs are taking place inbetween bookings that will in turn also protect the building internally. Only when our problem areas have been restored can we repaint the internal rooms. Once the internal rooms are repainted we have scheduled to update some furniture pieces and furnishings. The current furniture in this building is sympathetic to the property, we do not furnish our buildings with pieces of furniture that is wrong for the age of the property, or too 'grand' if this was never the way building was furnished in the past, we keep the properties original to the history records we have of each individual property. Most of our historic pieces of furniture are original and will be aged, but as long as they are fit for purpose, we love to keep these important rare pieces. Again I am sorry this was not what you were expecting. Our House Manager has exceptional scores for the cleanliness of this property in past reviews. This is an old property, we do expect the odd spider in residence, as in your own home. We can confirm there is no infestation, each property has scheduled pest control visits and no issues have been highlighted at this property.

This is very beautiful house in very lovely surroundings. It is very well equipped, in the cozy kitchen you'll find everything you need and the shower in the bathroom works perfectly. Theresa is a peach and gave us a perfect introduction. We enjoyed the fireplace a lot and bought extra wood to light it up every night. The place does need a bit of tlc though, but I understand some renovation works will be undertaken soon. The narrow staircase is not so easy to navigate, you don't want to bring up your suitcases to the bedroom, but they'll rest easy in the spacious living room. A most enjoyable stay in a peaceful and quiet environment.

Thank you for your lovely review. The property is due a repaint in the living and bedroom, this will be done after the high season when bookings ease up to allow us onsite.

The place and building are lovely.
We enjoyed the patio.
The bedroom was not suitable when you have an allergy to dust mites.
Chairs and couch are not very comfortable.
Very dogfriendly but only on the premesis (patio) only walks outside the castle on roads for cars

Lorraine - Operations Manager replied 122 days ago
Thank you for your review, I'm sorry you did not enjoy this landmark historic building. I can confirm this building is thoroughly cleaned after each stay, the very high wood panelled ceilings in the bedrooms are also cleaned with an extending duster. The sofa was recently replaced with a lovely traditional styled sofa in keeping with the age of the property, I'm sorry you thought it was uncomfortable. Most of our properties are very rural, we know dogs are not allowed into the main house gardens which is beyond our control, but there are lots of lovely areas nearby for your pet to explore, Theresa the local House Manager can give some great recommendations.

I love landmark trust properties

Annes grove gardens were great to visit as was Doneraile and we did 2 forest walks near by. A neglected region of Cork.

The house might need a lick of paint in the sitting room and bedroom? A smaller couch would allow better configuration of sitting room?

The house was otherwise great, so quiet.

Lorraine - Operations Manager replied 155 days ago
Thank you for your review. These areas are scheduled to be painted when we can secure the decorator, with a living room refresh straight after painting. Thank you for staying and supporting our charity, your stay helps us cover the costs of maintenance and decoration of this special property.

We really enjoyed our stay at Anne's Grove Miniature Castle. The setting is magical and we were blessed with the weather. We took full advantage of this by eating in the gorgeous garden gazing at the beautiful beech tree. We would love to have visited Anne's Grove Gardens but were unable to as they do not allow dogs. This was disappointing as it was right beside us. We really enjoyed Doneraile Park which allows dogs. We would highly recommend the property which is unique and kept to a very high standard.

Lorraine - Operations Manager replied 170 days ago
Thank you for your review, your score of three for value for money is very concerning. This is a very unique building and price per person per night is lower than you would pay to stay in a hotel with no lovely outdoor space or character. We are a not for profit company so the proceeds of your stay covers the costs and also the important maintenance to preserve this building for everyone to enjoy. Even though we are a dog friendly property we cannot get access to Annes Grove gardens as with the rest of the general public, we thank you for recommending Doneraile Park nearby for our next holidaying dogs.

This is a total experience. The "castle" is filled with charm and wonder. You really do feel transported back to a time gone by of knights and ferries. When we arrived, the songbirds were singing and the sun was shining. Everything about this place has a touch of magic to it. Theresa was as welcoming as she could possibly be. Our stay here went as smooth and relaxing as you would imagine it would be in a miniature castle, all to yourselves! Our stay was relatively short, so we only took one day trip and visited the gardens at Blarney Castle. If you like gardens, walks, history, and plants, it is well worth the visit. Afterwords visit the English Market and have dinner in Cork. It’s all not very far, and it makes the perfect day trip.
Thank you, Theresa. We look forward to coming back ASAP!!!

We received a present.from our Son and Daughter in law for an Irish Heritage short break. We decided on Anne's Grove because it is quite close to where our family are living and thought it would be nice to host a BBQ for all while we were there.

The place is amazing. Like stepping back in time. There was.no TV and very limited WiFi. On Friday night we lit the fire and played Scrabble...on a board...it was truly magical.

The stairs is tricky and one would need a reasonable level of mobility to negotiate it. I would not recommend a lot of alcohol before bed. The bed was really comfortable.

Everything you would need was provided. The kitchen was well stocked. With the necessities.

I would heartily recommend this place. Teresa, house manager was very helpful.

If you want to experience a bit of past history then this is perfect.

The weather was lovely while we were there and the BBQ was a great success with a few guitars and sing song.

Lorraine - Operations Manager replied 170 days ago
Thank you for your fantastic review. Unfortunately, as Anne's Grove is a listed building, and like all our properties, BBQ's are not allowed and is a requirement from our insurance providers. Its lovely to read you had a great time with the family!

We had an absolutely fantastic time staying in Annes Grove Miniature Castle and highly recommend it.
What an excellent location for exploring gourmet County Cork and the Wild Atlantic Way.
We bought all local produce in the English Market in the city, travelled the county during the day, cooked our lovely produce each night and relaxed with a fire in the living room in the evening.
Can't wait to return!

Incredible gate lodge. Ideal for getting away from everything, so peaceful and secluded. We only stepped out once or twice to visit nearby Doneraile Court / Estate and Annes Grove Gardens itself over our three-day stay. Pretty miserable weather while we were there, which meant lighting the stove each night but only added to the gothic feel of the place. The restoration of this property is perfect, you still get a wonderful feel for the original building.

Thank you for your lovely review and appreciation of our sensitive restoration on this mini castle. Im sorry the weather was not good enough to do more exploration of this part of Cork, there are some great days out when the weather is more predictable.

This was our first time staying in an Irish Landmark Trust property. Theresa, the house manager, had Anne's Grove Miniature Castle set up beautifully for us, and showed us everything we needed to know. The ambience is unique we a huge sense of history and continuity, and we soaked it up. It was warm and comfortable for us. I expect that for someone with sore knees / hips or eyesight difficulties the stairs could be awkward. Anne's Grove Miniature Castle is in the countryside rather than in a settlement, so an unexpected bonus was going outside after dark and seeing many more stars than are visible in town.

Lorraine - Operations Manager replied 266 days ago
Thank you for your lovely review. This is a very popular property in Irish Landmark and is situated in a lovely part of County Cork. As with many of our heritage properties, we cannot change the fabric of the building, so many quirky features such as the staircase in this property, is highlighted on our website should anyone have any mobility problems.

Annes Grove is a charming accommodation. The manager, Teresa, was extremely hospitable, informative and responsive. However, more went wrong with our weekend than went right.

While the kitchen, bathroom and bedroom areas were fine, the sitting room area could be only be described as baltic throughout the weekend, in spite of our best efforts to heat it. On arrival, though the storage heater was on, the room was freezing. Throughout the weekend, we boosted the heater and had the fire lighting for long periods but to no advantage. The storage heater was functioning on only one side, with the other half releasing no heat whatsoever. This meant that it proved almost impossible to spend time relaxing in the main room of the accommodation.

Added to that, two blankets that had been left in the bedroom wardrobe were unusable as it would appear that the previous occupant(s) had allowed their dog to use them. Both smelled disgusting. Thankfully, Teresa washed them on day 2 and returned them clean to us.

A hot water bottle that was provided had, unknown to us, a slit in it and this resulted in a leak in our bed on the first night of our stay. There were also problems with the bathroom light switch throughout the weekend.

The main issue that affected our stay was the cold in the sitting room. Annes Grove is billed as a place to relax and unwind. It was not possible to do this in the main room of the accommodation. It would have been appropriate for heat to have been left on well in advance of our arrival. There was no sense that this happened and, even if it had, only limited heat could have been emitted from a sub-standard heater. We appreciate that Annes Grove is a miniature castle with thick walls and that heating it in the middle of winter may be difficult. We also appreciate that the country was going through a cold spell at the time of our visit. But it is worth noting that, while in the sitting room, it wasn't possible to sit without a blanket, without a hat or without one's coat.

Overall, this was a disappointing experience.

Lorraine - Operations Manager replied 266 days ago
Thank you for your review and highlighting the issues you had. The Mouse Manager immediately called out the property plumber to repair the radiator in the living area and this is now resolved. The property is scheduled to be repainted internally in the very near future and we have heavy lined curtains to replace the current ones in the living room and bedroom, which when closed in the colder spells, will assist heat retention in these rooms. I apoligise the previous guests used our lovely blankets to dry their dog and neatly folded them and put them back in the wardrobe. It is against our dog policy to use our blankets or towels on pets and im pleased to read our House Manager resolved this for you immediately. The water bottles have been replaced, i apologise and my House Managers are checking the dates on all our hot water bottles to ensure this never happens again. Please do mention the problems you faced on this booking, I have made a note on your booking number and our Bookings Manager will give you a suitable discount on your next stay with us.

We stayed at the Miniature Castle for a few days, where we spent most our time in front of the stove relaxing, chatting and reading. The castle is lovely and peaceful, and there are some lovely walks in the area. It was a breath of fresh air for a few days and a super relaxing stay in a beautiful setting. It's also dog friendly, and our dog loved the peace and quiet.

I had a 3 night stay at Anne's Grove castle and it was lovely, peaceful and quiet. The house had all that I could need for my
stay and it was nice to come and go as I pleased.
Theresa the house manager was very welcoming and helpful and it was a pleasure to meet her.
At times when the weather was nice it was good to sit outside and hear the birds singing and watch the squirrels and other
wildlife go by.
It wasn't too far into Mallow from Castletownroche and right next door was Anne's Grove gardens which were also nice to visit.
At sometime I think it would be nice to come back to this wee house in the spring or summer when the weather is better.

We really enjoyed our 2 night break at the miniature castle.
There were only a couple of negatives.
1. We had our only full day in which we wanted to enjoy the garden somewhat ruined by tractors bombing up and down the road beside us. We literally couldn't go 2 mins before hearing one approach and pass. Even inside the castle it was disturbing.
Maybe it was because it was a sunny Saturday? I was surprised such a remote location would be noisier than our house in KK city.
2. Slugs would appear around the ceiling above our heads when in bed.
Otherwise a very nice property, would recommend with context.

Lorraine - Operations Manager replied more than 1 year ago
Thank you for your concerning review. Unfortunately we cannot control tractor work in the surrounding rural area, obvioulsy they decided to make hay while the sun shone. This has not been an issue before for our other guests. You left a great review in the Guest Book and did not mention at all to the local House Manager of slugs in the bedroom. She subsequently checked the bedroom immediately after your review and found no evidence of slugs or slug trails. I have sent you an email to expand the reasons for your low scores which I hope you will respond as this property consistently scores very high, in all areas, with our other guests.

We find it hard to find places just for couples , so Annesgrove was perfect for us.
The minute we arrived , we felt at home
The lovely garden with its mature trees and the seating was an ideal for morning coffee or a glass of wine before dinner . Everything was provided a turn key holiday . We especially like the cosy sitting room with the log fire and no TV . Great place to read , chat and to unwinded . The only downside is it popularly . We'd have booked it again this year but we couldn't find availability. The only thing I regret not bringing was our bikes . It's a great area for walking and biking . Close to Castletownroche if you need anything from the shops . We didn't know what to expect as it was our first time staying in one of your properties. Because we aren't able to stay at Anne'sgrove again , we're looking at Donegal maybe a larger property to introduce family and friends . Thanks again for providing us with a wonderful place to stay

What a lovely space! The building itself is loaded with antique charm, but all mod cons make it very comfortable. The host, Theresa, was friendly and welcoming; highly recommended.

It feels like a once-in-a-lifetime thing to stay a few nights in a castle, but it's actually possible -- even easy -- with Irish Landmark Trust! My mom and I stayed a couple of nights at Annes Grove Miniature Castle and it was just perfect: full of charming details like arched doorways, a beautiful working fireplace, the original (!!) front door on display, and an almost vertical internal spiral staircase that was an adventure every time we ventured up and down it. It made the stay even better that we had a two-day break from modern distractions like wifi and TV -- the castle had tons of books and games, and the grounds were absolutely gorgeous and full of birds, so there was always something to do!

We really loved our stay here, it was a very relaxing minimoon break after our wedding. The castle was like something from a fairytale, soo picturesque and set on the lovely grounds of Anne's Grove Gardens making it an escape from the outside world. Inside it was lovely and cosy with the wood burning stove lit to sit by in the evenings with a nice glass of wine. Theresa the property manager was a great help on arrival and during our stay giving us the history of the castle and advice on the local amenities. We will definitely be back for sure.

We had a really lovely, peaceful break in Annesgrove- it is a perfect getaway for a quiet retreat. Theresa , the house manager , was great- very welcoming and helpful and her recommendations for the local bar in Castletownroche, The Rockforest and the beautiful walks in Doneraile Park were super. Annesgrove is an absolutely charming little bolt hole.

We had a wonderful time in Annesgrove. Teresa our host welcomed us and told us the history of the neighbourhood including the gatelodge and the nearby Annesgrove estate. Teresa suggested places to go for walks and for food, which was very helpful. We heard lots of birdsong and would love to come back in the summer. Thanks again Teresa.

We stayed at Anne's Grove Miniature Castle for 2 nights to celebrate our 1st wedding anniversary. Was great we could bring our doggie too and he also loved it. The quiet and privacy was just what we needed and Doneraile Park about 10 mins away was just fansastic to stroll around and take in all the relaxing and lovely scenery. Nice tea rooms there too. Our host was fantastic and made sure we were well looked after and had everything we needed before leaving us to it. Can't recommend enough and we'll be back. A true gem! Go see for yourself.

Lovely quirky property. Enjoyed our stay but sadly tge Anne's Groves Gardens were not open on Mondays or Tuesdays so we could not see them and there is not much else to go to locally. The small spiral staircase is novel but could be difficult for some. Theresa the host is lovely and does a great job of looking after her visitors. Great place for a quiet getaway from the bustle of busy life.

We had a lovely stay in the little castle at Annesgrove. It exceeded our expectations and The landmark trust managed to combine a great restoration job with a cosy stay. Teresa was a great help in telling us about the house and local area.
We self catered mostly and the kitchen had everything we needed but the Rock Forest pub was very nice and friendly for lovely pints.
We loved the riverside walks in Castletownroche, kilavullin and would recommend the nano nagle centre.

We were enthralled with our recent week-long stay in this unique Gatelodge. The quirky Gothic design is a delight. And, we were amused by the presence of no less than three flights of stairs in a one-bedroom house :) We really enjoyed being able to bring our dog and found the garden perfect for him to potter about in safety. Our base was so well-located for us to explore a part of Cork that we had not known. Our kitchen was perfect & well-equipped for us to mostly self-cater; we did find great lunch spots in the area : "Thatch & Thyme", Kildorrery and "The Townhouse ", Doneraile as well as the Café in the wonderful Doneraile Park. Delighted to find the OPW Gardens open to visit at Annesgrove House, we visited in shifts as dogs were not permitted; this was fine, as we were almost on the doorstep! Mallow was not far, with an excellent SuperValu. I must pay credit to your terrific House Manager, Theresa Relihan. Theresa had the place lovely for us with all we could want provided. A lovely, warm woman, she is one of what I regard as the irish Landmark Trust's "Hospitality Ambassadors".

Really unusual place to go and stay in, my wife and I would really recommend it to anybody, only thing I would say, is that if you have any trouble in climbing, stay away, as the stone spiral staircase would be a challenge. Other than that, go for it, it is a beautiful place and to spend an evening there is really evocative of a time long gone. We intend to go back sometime, and we have told our friends already, plus the gardens just down the road are well worth a visit. The GPS had difficulty directing us there so it may be worth searching Annes Grove Gardens which is just down the road or get the Eircode.

Anne’s Grove Miniature Castle is a charming one-of-a-kind property. The photos online show its charm better than my words can.

Theresa, the house manager, was great, friendly, knowledgeable. She met us on our arrival and our departure. Theresa provided a lot of information on places to eat, shop and dine. She really enhanced our visit.

The kitchen had all the necessaries for preparing our meals and space to dine. And dining outside was also great. The bathroom was surprisingly spacious with a lovely shower. Bedroom was cute and comfortable.

The property location was convenient for our day trips. And for visiting Anne’s Grove gardens which are spectacular!

We enjoyed our two nights in the miniature castle. It was a welcome respite from our previous two weeks in Ireland that we spent in more populated places. The wood stove provided a welcome coziness to the cool evenings. The kitchen enabled us to cook onsite with groceries purchased in Castletownroche, just 10-15 minutes down the road. The gardens at Anne’s Grove had recently reopened and were beautiful and well worth visiting.

We couldn't recommend our stay enough. Irene's assistance with the booking and Theresa's warm welcome and fond farewell made the experience complete. The miniature castle is such a special place to stay in - it has so much character and charm complemented by home comforts and the outside garden and patio space was perfect. It's hard to tear yourself away but there's so much to explore on your doorstep and beyond - a very short walk brings you to the bridge where we were lucky to watch a kingfisher on the river. A slightly longer stroll in the other direction brings you to recently opened Anne's Grove Gardens and their tour was excellent. Other highlights included Doneraile Park, Mitchelstown Caves and Thatch and Thyme for lunch in Kildorrery.
Annes Grove miniature castle is yet another ILT gem. Thank you!

Booked two and a half years ago, postponed twice because of Covid travelling restrictions (we live in The Netherlands), it was worth waiting for. Extra luck: the grounds were eventually open (for the moment for guided tours only) the first time after years of restauration.
Coming down the winding stairs in the morning finding the snug bathing in the sunlight, enhanced by the ochre-yellow wallpaint, was fabulous. Irish Landmark Trust, do for Gods sake never refurbish in a modern nondescript Ikea/global hotelroom style! The worn aspect of rugs, furniture and the like adds to the feeling of timetravel.

Wow, wow, wow. My very own castle to stay in. From stone spiral steps to archways leading into each room to looking out over the turrets, it was a brilliant experience to explore and stay in Anne's Grove Mini Castle. Loved the history of the place and 'National Treasure' Theresa who enthusiastically took us through everything we needed to know and was on hand whenever we needed her. We were even privileged to be part of the Castle and Ireland's history because there was a Irish census while we were there. The castle is in a peaceful location surrounded by countryside and just within the grounds of another property which was unfortunately closed and therefore not accessible to us but nevertheless we felt part of. The inside of the property did not try to be modern and remained authentic which we loved. The bed was comfy though. There is no wifi or tv which was perfect to get away from the stresses of our working life. Instead a simple radio kept us entertained. Nearest village with a Spar was 5 mins away and a supermarket 15 mins away. It took us about 50 mins to get there from Cork Airport.

It was a very enjoyable stay in an historic building. A true sense of going back in time. I would recommend this property if you enjoy historic accomadation with some modern comforts. The caretaker is very helpful and knowledgeable about the history of the building and the local area aces to visit.

We stayed in the castle for 2 nights with our puppy and it was really lovely! Theresa was great on arrival, the place was spotless and had all we needed. Pack your slippers, a fluffy hoodie, a good book and sit back by the fire!

Plenty to see and do around this area of Cork, however you can just relax and enjoy the tranquillity of the cottage.

The host Teresa was fantastic and on arrival and hade the place looking and feeling warm for us on arrival.

Castletownroche is only 40min walk and very welcoming

It's like being transported back in time. Although, with mod cons!
Come prepared as there is not a lot of choice regarding food shopping in the area.

Once inside the gates you enter a different world. The view across the wide expanse of fields is stunning. The peacefulness is truly soul restoring. Inside it really is your castle with a super layout on the ground floor. The spiral staircase is a challenge that is worth the effort. The bedroom is enchanting and the bed is so very comfortable. (How on earth did you get it into the room?)

I had Annes Grove booked last year as a birthday present for my wife but we had to postpone due to you know what! Finally got to go this year but it was worth the wait! Such an amazing place & the perfect little getaway from it all. Irene from Irish Landmark Trust was great in helping with the booking, & our house manager Theresa, could not have been more helpful in ensuring we had everything we needed even though we unfortunately couldn't meet in person. Loved the stay, & will definitey be back again...

Beautiful tower in which you can feel like the king or queen during your stay. Not recommended though if you are not very mobile as the staircase to the bedroom is very steep & there is no bathroom upstairs.
Teresa, our host, was lovely over the phone (couldn’t meet us due to Covid 19) & explained everything perfectly

We loved our stay at Alice’s Grove. The first floor bedroom and Irish Castle design alone make staying here a memorable experience. The sensitive renovation combines the comforts of modern design with the charms of Gothic Revival. Caretaker Theresa Relihan welcomed us with a complete briefing and answered all our questions in spite of the strictures of Covid 19.

The greatest challenge is climbing the winding stone staircase to reach the first floor bedroom. This is not a structure for small children or adults with disabilities. The torch provided is absolutely essential for reaching light switches in the dark. The lot is small and would benefit from access to the grounds of the adjacent estate or pasture. The bathroom is serviceable, and a few throw pillows would enhance the comfort of the sofa.

But the building’s charm, serene surroundings and the night sky on a clear night made our stay unforgettable.

Irish Landmark Trust replied more than 1 year ago
Thank you for taking the time to review your stay. We're glad you enjoyed the uniqueness or the property and hope that the challenge of climbing the stairs was worth it!

My partner, our dog and I had a relaxing stay at Anne's Grove in early February. We arrived just as a storm was brewing and I was concerned that the old building might not be warm enough. However, the wood burning stove kept us toasty and cosy as the storm whirled outside. The whole property was clean and well-maintained. It was perfect for our dog too as she had some grass outside to explore as well as the novelty of the warmth from the stove. The castle is quite remote which adds to the lovely feeling of escape as we travelled down small country roads to get there. The kitchen was well equipped and had everything we needed on arrival (including fresh milk and biscuits for the all-important first cup of tea!). This was our first experience of an Irish Landmark Trust property. We were very impressed and will definitely try other Irish Landmark Trust properties in the future.

Enjoyed our stay at the property - especially the comfortable bed!
The wood stove was delight as the time we stayed was very cool and the stove made the sitting room very comfortable in the evenings.
Everything we needed was there. Theresa was very helpful and always available via the phone to answer questions and make recommendations for the area.
Great stay - even though we left a day ahead of schedule due to the virus chaos!

My wife and I had a wonderful stay at the miniature castle. The place was absolutly spotless and we had everything we needed to cook comfortably in the kitchen. It was lovely and cosy and we didn't feel the cold once. I can't think of one fault... the shower was hot and powerful, there was plenty of fuel for the fire, the bed was so comfortable, there were red squirrels running around the grounds! It's an amazing place to get away for a couple of days... we'll be back again for sure.

Property requires a review of its maintenance schedule as it is in need of same.
External- Relaying of gravel in parking space to counter levels of mud in the parking area. Second external/security light to allow for lit way alone pathway flagstones.

Internal-Removal of mold from walls in bathroom & possible re pointing of mortise on limestone where water is weeping in after rainfall (above fitted cabinet). Reinstall kitchen sink - raising draining board (which no longer drains) or replace sink unit.

Overall, we had a really enjoyable stay and I'd highly recommend it to others. It's a beautiful location, beautiful building full of character. So overall it was a great success and Theresa was very nice and friendly.
However, I would recommend improvements in the amenities section of the website. The website lists many amenities a long distance away (like Fota). There's no mention of Doneraile which is beautiful and close by. Having asked in advance, Theresa got this info for me by the time I arrived. We stumbled across Mallow castle also, which was very nice and also isn't in the website amenities. We brought our dog, she had a great time, but there is no info on dog-friendly places to eat. This is pretty important if you have a dog. Theresa found 2 places in advance which we went to and were nice. Finally, we were looking for local farmer's market, but couldn't find any reliable info on one. Likewise this would be very useful info to guests.

Anne’s Grove was even more peaceful and enchanting than we imagined it would be. The online photos do it no justice. You must be there to feel the true comfort of the castle and grounds. We were able to disconnect from the outside world and enjoy time together within a wonderful setting. Theresa was a phenomenal hostess who made the stay easy.

Annesgrove Minature Castle is a special and unique place to stay.
It really is a fabulous experience and you have to stay to fully appreciate it and the history that exists in the building and surrounding area.
I would highly recommend this castle, all you need are your groceries as kitchen is fully equipped.
Booking with the Irish Landmark Trust is easy and straightforward and the House Manager for this property, Theresa, is more than helpful and very friendly.

Anne's Grove is in a great location and a quirky building. As for UK Landmark's the joy is seeing the restoration of historic buildings at risk and being able to stay in these iconic houses.

Anne's Grove doesn't disappoint from a location point of view. Once the Garden restoration is complete, this will be a great visit, as the gate house sits on the edge of a historic garden that OPW is working to bring back to life. However the property itself is a little tired. This is not surprising given its popularity but the kitchen and bathroom need a refresh - the kitchen needs new cooking equipment (more pans, cutting knives and cooking kit please) and the bathroom needs a revamp (loo sit is distinctly wobbly and shower doesn't drain effectively). That said, the wee bedroom in the tower is lovely, (mattress again might need a refresh and 1 or 2 of the tower lights weren't working). In this respect, the small details make all the difference but that didn't detract from the fun of the place. Be aware that eating out is a bit hit and miss as the wonderful local pub that did meals has closed - so its just Guinness and craic down the road.

We wanted a unique temporary home for our day trips to the south, and the mini castle filled the need nicely. After this, hotel rooms were boring! :-)

Chose this place to stay as part of our Honeymoon , was not disappointed in the least. Exactly what we wanted. I myself work in IT and to be totally cut off from TV, phone etc.. was perfect. Will be back to visit this place again . Theresa was so helpful and perfect in making sure you were shown around and shown everything. Brilliant !

Met by Theresa who is very pleasant and welcoming. The miniature castle is lovely and very tranquil. Only drawback is the walk into the village is quite long and with no footpath could be treacherous on a dark evening. My wife and I used the location as a base to visit other places such as Blarney, Cork and others but were delighted when we returned in the evenings to put our feet up and relax.

Stunning miniature castle in North Cork, it’s a magical place to relax and unwind. We were greeted by a very friendly hostess, Therese. Our little dog loved it too. We could only get access from 5.00pm the day we arrived which was a little late but appreciate its busy and they want to make sure it’s fully prepared. We will definitely be back.

The quirkiness of the property and the location were excellent.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would recommend to others.
Would be even better to be able to walk around the grounds, like you can with Batty Langley, which we stayed at after visiting Annes Grove.

The Anne's Grove Miniature Castle is a great place to stay. It's tucked away in the countryside about 40 minutes drive north of Cork, with its own lovely garden and parking space. As the name indicates, it's a genuine castle in miniature complete with turrets and winding staircases; but it has all the comforts of a modern building including great heating (if you need it) and an excellent bathroom with loads of hot water. It's a lovely get away for two people. And we had a very friendly welcome from Theresa, the manager, who gave us lots of great tips for places to visit nearby. One of these, the Doneraile Estate, has some extensive and beautiful gardens to walk though. Highly recommended.

I would recommend Anne's Grove to anyone wishing for that unusual or romantic break. The lady that looks after it could not be more helpful. In fact the whole experience was just magical. And we look forward to staying in more landmark properties.
But why don't you have a yearly membership with say discounts for the members. Similar to the national trust in the UK.
But it was the best stay I have had for a long time.

Irish Landmark Trust is a non-profit organisation that tries to save, share and sustain some of Ireland's built heritage. Annes Grove Miniature Castle is located in a stunning countryside location. The silence which surrounds this rural property is part of the charm for our visitors. Beyond the gate, in the privacy of a small garden, guests can enjoy great peace and tranquility with a small patio outside that offer those who wish to enjoy the natural setting, a wonderful opportunity to dine 'al fresco'.

From the moment we met Theresa we knew we were going to have a fantastic time. What a very special lady. She welcomed us with a "cead mile failte", We actually felt we knew her all our lives, such a warm, kind, friendly, knowledgeable, helpful and happy lady. The castle itself was lovely and quaint, full of charm and history. It was so inviting with the stove lit and what an array of books and games to choose from. Loved the fact that there was no television as this allowed us to totally recharge our minds and bodies. The peace and quiet was lovely and the birds singing was such a treat. The bed was so comfortable, felt like you were sleeping on air, Delinately, definately returning. Thank you all so much (especially Theresa ) for a truly magical weekend.

We spent a most enjoyable couple of days at Anne's Grove Castle. Theresa was most helpful and friendly. It was lovely sitting beside the fire, warm and cosy while the rain lashed outside. Castletownroche is a very interesting and picturesque village and Doneraile and Doneraile Park and the Townhouse Café all worth a visit.

My husband, our dog, and I decided to spend my birthday weekend at Anne’s Grove on a whim, and it was amazing.

Upon arrival, Theresa (our host) gave us a quick tour of the place, filling us in on the functional stuff (where to find pots and pans, etc), as well as the history of the place.

From there, it was long walks around the grounds, evenings spent reading, talking, and stoking the fire, and meals for two.

It really was everything, and we look forward to coming back!

From our perspective as Londoners, three things were particularly striking:
1) The stars at night - a busier sky than I have ever seen before!
2) The silence - not scary, but extremely peaceful. Although the Castle is on a road, it is an extremely minor road in a very rural area - we did not hear a single car!
3) Theresa is a secret Londoner - but has the warmth of all those we encountered in Ireland.
Well positioned within a reasonable drive of the Ring of Kerry.
Very clean and well-heated, good shower. Comfy bed.
Highly recommended!

It was a beautiful, quiet location which made us feel like royalty. Theresa was an excellent host, providing us with thoughtful advice and recommendations, and even came back to let us in the castle when we accidentally locked out keys inside! This was a nice chance to relax and unwind after hectic days of touring - and driving on the other side of the road. Once you lock the gates behind you, the castle is all yours. Once we bought food provisions and locked the Anne's Grove Castle gate behind us we did not venture out again until we checked out two days later. We found no need to leave this absolutely magical place....it was after all our anniversary destination. Theresa, our hostess, welcomed us with fresh flowers in the bedroom and kitchen and the tea kettle was all ready for an afternoon cup. She could not have been more helpful and kind and I felt as if I was talking to an old friend in no time....she's such a gem! We found Anne's Grove Castle to be all we'd hoped for and more...pastoral, historic, romantic, and utterly charming. Sitting quietly by the fire and reading in the evenings was just what we needed after our first busy week of sightseeing. The period furnishings were lovely adding to the historic feel and the beautiful crisp bed linens were very welcome at the end of the day.
We commend the Irish Landmark Trust in preserving this lovely property and providing the opportunity for people who love Ireland to enjoy a little piece of history. We couldn't recommend it more highly. Our only regret is that we wish we'd been able to stay longer.

This is a lovely little place, perfect for a quiet getaway. I know the area well, and while I wasn’t there for sightseeing and such, for someone that wants to see Co. Cork, this cottage is very well located, near enough for day trips to Cork City, Middleton distillery, the seaside, all surrounding quaint villages, the River Blackwater, and over into Limerick. It’s quiet and peaceful, a kitchen suitable for cooking simple meals (there are not enough pots and such for an elaborate meal), and a lovely little sitting room with a cosy stove fire. The stairs to the bedroom are very steep and narrow, so I would not recommend the Castle Lodge for people with limited mobility. All in all, we throughly enjoyed our 2 day getaway, and look forward to another visit soon.

I wish I had a picture of her face when my wife got out of the car and saw where we were staying. She was completely blown away and when we were shown around the inside she was even more impressed. Excellent facilities. We were short of nothing in the kitchen and the chocolate biscuits were a nice touch. Bathroom is huge. Thanks for the loan of a OS map - came in very handy for our walk on day 2.
Perfect venue if you are looking for somewhere different - thinking about a lighthouse keepers cottage for next year.

We enjoyed our two nights immensely in the 19th century gatehouse. A special thanks to our "hostess" Theresa who made us very welcome and provided full explanation of local amenities and places to visit. Annes Grove itself is located in very peaceful surroundings and the absence of modern distractions of TV and WiFi added to our experience of quiet and solitude. We particularly enjoyed our visit to Doneraile Park and also the local towns of Mallow and Fermoy.

It's great to hear you had a very enjoyable stay in Anne's Grove and that you appreciated the digital disconnect which we promote. It's so good for people to just escape the hectic electronic world we live in from time to time. Theresa is a wonderful House Manager so it's no surprise that you were warmly welcomed and well looked after. Thank you for taking the time to leave your review and we hope to welcome you back to an Irish Landmark Trust property soon.

We loved our stay at Annes Grove. It was just two days but two days we will always remember. We had a lovely welcome from Theresa who gave a lot of tips on the best places to visit. The little castle was cosy and comfortable and early morning was particularly magical. The weather stayed fine which was a big help! We had our dog with us and would like to commend the Landmark Trust for allowing visitors to bring their dogs to many of their properties. It is something you should highlight more. We had a wonderful time and may come back again.

Thank you so very much for supporting Irish Landmark Trust and our work to try and save, share and sustain Ireland's built heritage. It was wonderful to have you, and your dog, stay at Annes Grove Miniature Castle. 15 of our 32 properties welcome dogs and it is wonderful to hear when guests are able to include their beloved pet on their break away. We do hope to welcome you back again in the future.

Enjoyable stay with my dog.

Exceptionally private mini castle/ gatelodge in excellent condition. Dog friendly an added bonus. The granite spiral staircase is rather narrow & steep hence thought provoking when heading upstairs to the bedroom, with comfy antique bed & pristine white linen. Near impossible I suspect to get a reasonable sized suitcase up there. Kitchen well appointed as is bathroom with loads of hot water & electric shower. An excellent circular walk around the fields for dog starting from the back door brilliant. No lead required! My chatty host was full of local information & fresh flowers gave a warm touch indoors.

The mini-castle has been wonderfully restored - both inside and out. It is very comfortable and cozy with modern amenities while still retaining a clear feeling of being in a castle! The property is quite remote on a beautiful estate in the countryside. Our stay was very peaceful and secluded - just what we needed to relax and recharge. Theresa was absolutely great in meeting us and getting us set up for our stay. We highly, highly recommend Annes Grove, especially as a quiet, romantic get-away!

We reserved it we’ll in advance and where given the property manager’s info so we were able to contact her for specific needs. It was all what we expected. One drawback (but not for us), it is remote, and there is nothing nearby.

My husband and I recently stayed at the Anne's Grove Miniature Castle and couldn't have been happier! The mini castle is absolutely adorable, and the location is perfect for those looking to get away from all the hustle and bustle of city life! Theresa was amazing, and not only gave us a run down of the property, but provided us with great places to visit and wonderful restuarant suggestions that were close by!
We had an amazing time, and would absolutely do it all over again!

Anne’s Grove was lovely. Nice and warm and It was pleasant to spend some down time sitting in the kitchen listening to the birds. Very peaceful. Compared to the other places we stayed in Ireland I thought it was a bit expensive. It was warm and the bed was comfortable but the sitting area could do with a furniture revamp. I am ran, I get that the couches are kind of ‘in character’ but they weren’t all that enticing to sit in front of the fire. The experience could also be made so much better if you could get out on the tower to look over the countryside and walk over the gate to take i the gardens when they’re done. It was fun but these things would make it much better value for money. Our contact, Theresa, was great.

Thank you for taking the time to let Irish Landmark Trust know about your recent stay at Annes Grove Miniature Castle. It is lovely to see that you had a nice and peaceful stay at this property. As a guest you are helping us in our mission to save, share, and sustain Ireland’s built heritage. It might not feel like your holiday is anything but a relaxing indulgence, but when you stay in an Irish Landmark property, you’re part of a community that’s helping to keep heritage alive. I will forward on your note about the couch to the Standard's Officer to see if there are plans in the budget for this property this year. With regard to your note about accessing the roof top I am afraid this is not possible for this particular property. There is no platform to stand on and if guests were allowed access there would not only be a safety issue but also a lot of damage could be caused to the roof tiles. There are other Irish Landmark Trust properties such as Helen's Tower or Barbican that guests do have access to the roof space if they so wish.

Cozy and wonderful stay!

My stay was the best I could have imagined! The castle was in a wonderful location, off the beaten track, surrounded by farms it was a quiet and relaxing stay. Theresa was so welcoming and had great tips for stuff to do see and do around the area. The bed was the most comfortable and the entire stay was exceptional. I will definitely be back!

Well equipped accommodation with the essentials to start the stay, like milk and tea/coffee, thoughtfully provided.
Theresa's personal intro to the property and surrounding area was very helpful.
A mini castle is a true description of the property. It is peaceful and well looked after.
Bedroom very comfortable, kitchen cosy and functional, sitting room a little compact but has a great wood burning stove, books/games etc.
Being of an older generation the only reservation we had for the property was having to navigate the stone spiral staircase to get to the loo at night!!!

The property was more than I expected. It's a real authentic small castle. It was neat to stay here and tour Ross and Blarney Castles and you can see the similar architecture used. We stayed 3 nights and loved it. You defiantly don't want to stay less than 2 if you want to appreciate it at all. The host Theresa was amazing. She provided info about the castle and local places to eat. Thank you for the amazing memories.

We truly enjoyed our stay at Anne's Grove. It was definitely a highlight of our trip to Ireland. Theresa, the caretaker, was very helpful with recommendations for things to do in the area. Everything was clean and well taken care of at the castle. The steps are a little intimidating going upstairs to the bedroom but that adds to the character of the castle.

We are long-term users of UK Landmark Trust, and believe in the ethos, which I think you share,

First, Theresa could not have been more helpful or welcoming - she had the place spotless.

It is a fine, quirky property, and there is lots of interest around Fermoy,Mallow and Castletownroche.

A few observations.
- Lovely fresh flowers
- It would have been nice to have had a welcome tea tray on arrival (+/- biscuits?)
- The library could have been much better - guidebooks of area, maps, books by local authors etc
- Why could we not have strolled in the grounds in the evening, when the workers had left?
- I was expecting a hip bath as described (I am not fond of showers) and was disappointed to find it in the undergrowth.

Thank you again Sue and Dudley Thomas

Thank you for taking the time to let us know about your stay at Annes Grove Miniature Castle. I am glad to hear that you had a warm welcome. I have passed on your comments to the Standards Officer who hopefully will be able to address them so thank you for your suggestions. Irish Landmark is a non-profit charity that has a limited budget that we must stick within in order to continue to look after the properties in our care. The grounds are not looked after by Irish Landmark and I am afraid whilst they are in restoration they are not available to guests staying at this property. I also investigated your comment about the hip-bath and unfortunately some text reverted back to this on the website after an update. I do apologise for this oversight and the text has been amended to the correct details. I do hope that you have a chance to come back and stay at another Irish Landmark property in the future.

We greatly enjoyed our stay. It is in the middle of the country so it is a serene setting and all the features of this "folly" combine to make it a very atmospheric building to stay in. You have to accept it as being small but with the fire going this meant it felt cosy. Teresa was very friendly when we arrived. It was well located for our trip after a stay in Cork and not far from the Rock of Cashel/ Cahir Castle before we headed to the Ring of Kerry. We would recommend going to the English Markets at Cork before you drive here to buy some delicious ingredients to cook up in the kitchen. Castletownroche the village nearby also had supplies/pubs if needed. It is a special place.

Absolutely wonderful! This beautiful place is cozy and peaceful. It isn't just the actual place that makes your time here perfect, it is the friendliness and kindness of the innkeeper - Teresa. Quirky, comfortable and well-maintained. Teresa is an excellent caretaker-friendly and informative. We were disappointed that the grounds of Anne's Grove had fallen on bad times over the past few years but were glad to hear that the OPW are now taking it in hand as the gardens are one of the big attractions in the area for us.
We felt the lighting could be enhanced-it is rather dim in the kitchen especially when one is cooking! A little more cooking equipment would also be helpful. The bed room is charming but we felt the lovely winter duvet was much too warm for the summer!
Overall we really enjoyed our stay and would encourage others to go.

Just a wonderful time. Authentic "castle experience", complete with a stone winding staircase and turret! A perfect place for the two of you, its very rural so very romantic and peaceful. Sitting on the back patio, taking a walk, reading in front of the fireplace, sleeping in your own castle..what's not to love?

The bathroom was renovated and very nice (you never know what you'll get when you travel), the kitchen was perfectly fine for regular cooking.

Overall, an unforgettable stay!

This miniature castle was just a magic experience to stay in with a stone spiral staircase, turrets, metre thick walls and big iron gates. All with the modern conveniences of excellent heating, good bathroom and well equipped kitchen. We were blessed with good weather but this cottage would have been enjoyable in all weathers. There are multiple small thoughtful comforts with a variety of books to read and games to play.
Michael our host was charming and welcoming and had provided some welcoming extras in the form of ground coffee and milk for a cuppa.
We loved the countryside and were in easy distance to Cork and the Wild Atlantic Coast.

What can I say. Excellent location for getting away from it. No WiFi, no TV, just the radio. Switch off and 'chillax'. Anne's Grove has all you need, nothing's more than half hour drive, the village 35-40 minutes walk. Rockforest bar in the village very welcoming. Really can't fault anything.

We had a wonderful Christmas honeymoon at this romantic miniature castle. The woodland behind the castle was just magical, we adored the "gingerbread" kitchen, the fireplace and the castle itself was magical.

It was a great place to connect, bond and talk. We sincerely enjoyed the long walks and although we were disappointed that the gardens were closed we made the most of the countryside that surrounds Anne's Grove by walking to the close-by village of Castletownroch.

Really peaceful, quiet and wonderful. Thanks

What a charming miniature castle nestled on the edge of a quiet garden estate! The place oozes with character!
Upon arrival, the house manager had the fire lit, was kind enough to have supplied a few sundries in the kitchen, and gave us some helpful tips about the area. We settled in very quickly and became quite fond of the place. The kitchen had just enough equipment to cook a successful meal, and the whole house seemed to have everything you'd need to be quite comfortable, but just on a smaller scale. Its really perfect for two people.
The only cons we would mention is that you're not allowed to explore the garden estate to which the gate lodge belongs. That was a bit surprising as we've stayed at other gate lodges in the past and have been welcomed to walk the estate grounds.
Also, there was barely enough hot water to complete one 6-8 minute shower (which by North American standards is somewhat short). I would definitely recommend that you don't linger!!
All in all, we would recommend this place to others. The nearby Castletownroche town was also charming, and again, had everything you need (a butcher, a small grocery etc), but just on a smaller scale.

This is a great place To get away and experience rural Ireland. The gatehouse was just far enough away from any town to provide a quiet place to read and find some much needed relaxation. It is also close enough for day trips to castles and historic towns and still be back in time to cook a lovely dinner and sit by the peat fire.

Not somewhere for those wedded to their tech. Switch off the phone and leave the tablet at home - there is no wifi and barely any phone signal anyway (so bring a sat nav or offline maps if you don't know the area!). Enjoy the cosy stove, good food from the butcher in Castletownroche, and hopefully some good company.

My wife and I rented the castle for three days for her 65th birthday..it was a surprise! Since the owner of the local pub was ill, food service there was curtailed; she had a wonderful birthday meal from the local butcher (yes, Castletownroche has one!) in her own kitchen in our our own little hideaway. We picked up extra peat blocks at the local garage and read and played Scrabble to firelight every night. Later we stopped by Ross Castle in Killarney and were amazed at the similarities of the buildings.
The service was excellent. And the experience was, well, for an otherwise overused word, unique.
Loved it!

Anne's Grove Miniature Castle was truly a charming place to stay. We got to be Lord and Lady for 4 lovely days. It is centrally located for exploring lots a places, and we looked forward to returning to our 'castle' every day. Landmark Trust have done an excellent job of renovating this little gem into a place right out of the storybook, and yet there were still the modern conveniences we expected. So much better than a bed-in-a-box hotel room, and much more private.

This is a wonderful place where you can escape for a few days from the hurly-burly of modern life. It is a beautiful building which has been well restored. There is great quietness and tranquillity here. It is also well placed to visit Cork and the nearby towns of Fermoy and Mallow.

Quaint and exotic location. I think you need to make plain that the gardens at Annes Grove are closed and really you are discouraged from entering. We did explore and can report that OPW are unlikely to get the gardens back into any sort of shape for years. It is an interesting area and a good base. But you also need to make it plain that the winding stone steps are not easy. Overall a great stay and thoroughly enjoyed!

We did enjoy the stay, however you need to take steps to prevent the dampness in the bedroom which is unsightly and smells.

This is emanating largely from a design fault in the roof structure in that when the roof was replaced the new parapet flashing/gutters were made too narrow, which means that it is impossible to clear them out without damaging the roof slates and consequently the person who is clambering over the roof has on many occasions broken slates which have not been replaced property.

The solution is relatively inexpensive and involves running the flashing/gutter up higher onto the roof pitch and you really should get this attended to now by someone who understands old buildings or the longer term solution will come at a much higher price as rot will set into the roof timbers.

Also the vegetation around the house should be cut down and the ivy removed from the front façade to prevent erosion into the cement work.

We stayed for three nights, all necessary items were available and the presentation was good. The most disappointing aspect while visiting was not being able to walk in the gardens, they were closed for maintenance. It appears they had been closed for some time and there are no other walks close by. Guests being advised of the situation prior to booking would avoid disappointment.
The building is lovely and really sets the atmosphere of past periods.

Thank you for taking the time to let us know about your recent stay at Annes Grove Miniature Castle. We are delighted to hear that you have had a good time. My apologies about the lack of access to the gardens of the main house during your stay but Irish Landmark Trust do not look after this I am afraid. Access has always been given to Irish Landmark guests on the kindness of the owners and work has begun there quite recently. Once Irish Landmark were informed of the work been carried out we contacted upcoming guests to let them know access was going to be ceased. My sincerest apologies that this did not happen prior to your arrival. Notification has been put on Irish Landmark Trusts website also. “Please note: The property is located beside the access gate for the Estate and Gardens. Annesgrove Gardens are NOT accessible to guests staying at Annesgrove Gatelodge during the renovation of the grounds”.

Anne's Grove Miniature Castle stands by a quiet country crossroads about 2 miles from the nearest small town/village. It's a calm and peaceful location with birdsong and just the occasional vehicle passing by. The OPW have taken over the management of the famous Gardens and are working on the site so no access is allowed by the public nor Castle residents. It also means that the quietness can make you feel remote. Inside the Castle is cosy and warm and well equipped for just one or two holidaymakers. There are very narrow, steep steps up to the bedroom. I only wouldn't recommend the property because of this staircase. Many older people would find it difficult and frightening especially as the bathroom is downstairs.

The beautifully restored building provides you with the old feel in living & sleeping room, stairs and tower, while fully equiped kitchen & bathroom are up to today's standard. The noise and cold (draft) are coming from one source in particular : the top door of the tower. After having insolated this door, the guests can withstand any winter, provided that all heaters work. Want more heat? The turf for the fireplace can be replaced by wood, which will boost the temperature in the living room even further. Besides the building there is the vanishing chance to explore the former glory of the garden, just for you to enjoy. In the coming period the state who finally bought the terrain will invade the grounds surrounding the building with big noisy machines, coming through the gate with their own keys, start early in the morning, without any notice, so be prepared.

Thank you for taking the time to let us know how you got on during your recent stay at an Irish Landmark Trust property. We are delighted to hear that you enjoyed your stay at Anne's Grove Miniature Castle. You will be glad to hear that the House Manager is actually in the process of trying to arrange something for the top door of the tower. As you aware these are conserved properties so any alterations to the fabric needs careful consideration. I have investigated further your comment about works taking place in Anne's Grove Gardens carried out by the owners. There is work scheduled to take place over the summer and one of their points of access will be the gate adjoining Anne's Grove Miniature Castle which may be used on occassion during this work as this is a right of way for the owners and not exclusively for guests staying at the Irish Landmark Trust property.

My husband and I had a relaxed and enjoyable holiday at Anne's Grove Gatelodge. There were workmen on site doing some tree surgery when we arrived which meant there was considerable noise, and some falling boughs, for a couple of hours before they departed. Michael explained this had been an unexpected arrival, and all was quiet once they left. The house was in good order with everything we needed, and Michael had set the fire so that was a cheery welcome.

We enjoyed the stash of boardgames and books on site in the evenings. We spent much of our day travelling to various locations in Cork, and it was wonderful to return to our miniature castle at dusk.

We had a fun and laid-back holiday, and would certainly recommend this location, and the Landmark Trust in general - and have already done so.

We had an amazing few days at the Annesgrove Gatehouse. What a great place to relax with a warm fire and a cold beer! We enjoyed walking through the woods and taking day trips. The gatehouse was very comfortable and well furnished and equipped. Despite what a previous reviewer said about the lack of adequate heating, we found the combination of electric heaters and the woodstove kept us toasty. Would love to stay here again!

This is a very special place, our medium size dog was in dog heaven, the grounds are fab and you can get a good walk in beautiful surroundings with not person around.
The castle is basic but very special.
Bring slippers and dressing gown as the bathroom is down a cold stone spiral staircase from the bedroom. The stove kept us snug in the sitting Room
Pubs in Castletownroache (3Km) were very friendly and allowed our well behaved dog in,
Special thanks to Micheal he was as helpful as anyone could possibly be,
Over all 10/10

Arrived and were made welcome.

When we checked out the accommodation we both thought that we should leave immediately and drive on to somewhere more comfortable. However, stupidly, we stayed.

Once we kept feeding the stove in the ground floor room, that room remained cosy and comfortable and, in fairness, the kitchen was reasonably warm.

Visiting the bathroom was like a trip to the north pole. The room was bitterly cold, heated only by a tiny storage heater.

Even worse was the bedroom, cold, musty and we thought the bed was damp. The presence of a humidifier should have sent us packing. We have never slept in such a cold room, cold beyond freezing. The storage heater did not work.

Two nights were two too many and we left early on the 3rd day.

What a pity! A thoughtfully conserved building, peaceful but in need of considerable renovation.

1. A bigger heater in bathroom
2. A bigger heater in the bedroom and one that that actually works
3. A bigger heater at the foot of the spiral stairs and one that actually works. We would suggest drapes across the steps to the roof and the 'forbidden' steps...this might help to keep the place warm.

Firstly, my sincerest apologies that your were unable to fully enjoy your stay at Anne's Grove Miniature Castle. I wish to ensure you that I am looking into the heating issue in the bedroom that you mention in your review. I have asked the House Manager to please get back to me in relation to this so we can address this matter urgently. With regard to your comment on using storage heaters, as our guests know in all cases we have sought to make a sensible compromise between due regard for safety and the careful retention of the structure and composition of each building, which makes them interesting places to stay. With respect to Anne's Grove the storage heaters there were installed as so to disturb the fabric of the building as little as possible. We will certainly look into the matter you have raised about one of them which appears not to have been working correctly during your stay and will rectify this as soon as possible.

Be King and Queen of your own country castle - for a few days at least. A delightful gate house in a quiet location yet near enough to the town to make shopping for food easy. The stove set in the great old fireplace gives the compact sitting room a warm, friendly, comforting atmosphere. The winding stone stairs to the bedroom is steep and narrow so it could be difficult for people with mobility issues. We loved our stay here.

A delightful and romantic location for a quiet few days away from it all.

Only suggestion is that the mattress in the bedroom is very uncomfortable and could do with being changed for a new one or at least some kind of memory foam topper put on it to improve it. It hurt my back sleeping on it unfortunately.

We had an excellent time staying at Anne's Grove! Michael was there to greet us and he was available throughout our weekend stay to answer a few specific questions that we had. The place is filled with character and we enjoyed just sort of "hanging out" - relaxing in front of the fire, cooking, and exploring some nearby walks. In fact, the locals down at The Spinning Wheel pub told us that the walled garden is in fact one of Ireland's best places to spot a leprechaun? We looked and looked, but no luck...next time hopefully, as we'll definitely be back!

My boyfriend and I recently stayed in Annes Grove Gardens with our dog. I can genuinely not extend enough thanks to Michael and the Irish Landmark Trust - the place was so, so beautiful. The castle itself was beautiful, the staircase and the gorgeous high ceilings!! Michael had prepared a fire for us - even going to such lengths as to cut the wood to the exact size required for the fire! We had a fantastic time, the surrounding area is so peaceful and there are plenty of lovely historical sights nearby - Glanworth castle was stunning, and Donegal forest park was lovely too. We took a trip into Blarney too which was well worth it. There is enough equipment to cook your own food which we did for the first two nights, but on the last night we ordered Indian from the Indian restaurant in Mallow - chicken tikka masala was delcious. Such a nice, relaxing stay - sightseeing during the day and reading books and drinking wine by the fire at night. I would recommend it to anyone!

We were looking for an adventure and we found it at Annes Grove. It was magical & charming. We loved having our own sitting room and (well stocked) fireplace. Not for the feeble or faint of heart.... it's quite a climb to the bedroom, but a once in a lifetime kind of experience. We were a little nervous after reading the guest book which warned us not to walk in the surrounding woods, with no explanation. All in all, we had a great time and would have loved to explore the surrounding grounds and know more of it's history.

No to, no internet, the noise of wind in the trees and a crackling log burner; a perfect weekend escape. Castle was perfect and Michael was a great manager of the property ensuring we had all we needed as we arrived late. Close to Cork and 5 mins from Castletownroche and its amenities. But who needs that. Hunker down, enjoy the woods and Scrabble in front of the fire.

This was my second time at the miniature castle at Anne's Grove but my partners first. It was a great reminder to me, just how lovely this little castle is. We stayed only three days and for our entire stay we didn't see another soul, something which we were very happy about! The peace here is remarkable, the only noise is the odd passing car. We enjoyed long breakfasts, long lunches and even longer dinners and took long walks in the gardens. We were lucky to be able to dine outside on the patio area. for most of our stay-just the sound of the birdsong to keep us company-Perfect!
The kitchen has everything you'll need, the shower is very effective, the stove provided a cosy fire later in the evening and the bed was extremely comfortable. Michael greeted us at the property and was very friendly and welcoming. Anne's Grove Miniature Castle is a very special and very romantic place.

Anne's Grove Gatelodge is a fine architectural example from well respected architect duo Deane and Woodward,(circa 1860) who were involved in the building of many of our fine buildings in Ireland and in the UK. The accommodation is well dressed with period pieces, with the modern additions fitting in perfectly to give any visitor to the Gatelogde a very comfortable stay.

Anne's Grove Estate on which the Gatelodge is situated is also a pleasurable place, guests of the Gatelogde can walk the Estate gardens, which are beautiful with amazing plants and landscaping - could be on a par with Powerscourt and the Botainc Gardens. The sad part of this is that the gardens are falling into disrepair and are quite overgrown and closed to the public, this mainly due to storms causing extensive damage which seems to be proving very difficult to deal with, I would imagine cost is an issue too.

Staying at the Gatelodge is a very peaceful and tranquil experience & having the gardens to explore is a huge bonus! I just hope they can be saved so that visitors to the Gatelodge can continue to enjoy this experience.

The mini castle was great, it was everything we wished it would be. I was impressed by the amount of updating that had been done, but yet still kept it original. The local bar in town had great food and friendly people. Oh and of course good beer. The area was quiet and peaceful. We went for a walk down the trail from the castle and got to see a little back woods Ireland. The only item that i would improve on was that the mattress was pretty well wore out could use a newer one.

We loved staying at the castle and exploring the grounds. Unfortunately the caretaker Michael was less than helpful. We made arrangements to arrive at a certain time, as requested, but when we arrived he wasn't there. We called him (very thankful that we had mobile service, despite the warnings to the contrary) and he said he had simply forgotten about our meeting. He did arrive right away after that and helped us into the castle. The next day, as we were exploring the grounds, we ran into him by accident and asked his advice about how to find certain paths marked on the map. He seemed unsure how to answer, and we now know that is because he had not explored the marked paths for some time. In fact, it's clear no one has explored those paths in many years because they no longer exist. We became hopelessly lost for over an hour (in heavy, thorny brush, almost becoming injured because you can't see the ground through the brush) and ended up accidentally next to the home of the property owners, who were very upset about our presence. We would recommend that the property map be updated in the future.

Thank you for taking the time to let Irish Landmark Trust know about your recent stay at Annes Grove Miniature Castle. It was disappointing to read that an out of date map resulted in this experiance during your stay and I can confirm that I have been in contact with the Local House Manager to ensure that this information has been removed from the property. The House Manager will also ensure that all information is updated as soon as possible.

We stayed three nights at the Miniature Castle to serve as a base to explore southern Ireland and as a nightly retreat.

For both these purposes the Castle served admirably. It is a lovely little homely place, nicely isolated from any form of hustle, tucked away at the intersection of several small country lanes.

It comes attached to a large (and somewhat overgrown) Gardens which are well worth a wander - they are currently not open to the public, so you will have the place to yourself (and the foxes, pheasants and other locals).

The Castle itself is a dinky little thing - three rooms downstairs (kitchen, sitting room and bathroom) and a bedroom up a classical castle spiral stone staircase (which is steep and tight in terms of getting luggage up and down).

The amenities in the place are old and a bit worn but still comfy and perfectly usable. The Castle has a little library of second hand books of various genres (I suspect there has been a bit of traveller book-exchange going on).

Nearest shops are a 5 minute drive away. Better ones are about 20 minutes away.

All in all, we had a great stay here, and it was one of my favourite places to stay.

When we first arrived, we felt we were whisked away to a magical getaway. Where the castle was located was beautiful, and centrally enough located to enjoy the sites of Dingle and Ring of Kerry. We couldn't have asked for a more quiet and special place to stay. The access to the gardens was like we had our own Secret Garden to explore. Michael, who manages the property, was kind and very helpful, and made our check in and check out fantastic. We loved every minute of our stay in this enchanted wonderland.

Stayed for two nights with my sister and both of us wished we were staying for another night, it was so quiet and relaxing.
We spent two hours walking in the grounds ( in the rain)! But it was beautiful but nearly all of the paths are overgrown and we got lost twice would really recommend if you want to get away from everything for a couple of days. Just watch out for stairs to bedroom bit scary if you are unsteady on your feet!

A delightful quirky building, stone spiral stair to climb to bed, peat brickette burning stove to add atmosphere, with modern amenities such as a spacious shower. Gardens to explore and just the sound of birdsong.
A good base to explore this part of Ireland, easy routes in all directions. Hills/mountains not far away for good walking.

The property was even better than expected. Great to be able to get out onto the roof and see the views. Enjoyed breakfast on the little patio behind the house. The living room was very cosy and we were happy to see the bath replaced with a good shower. Thoroughly enjoyed the gardens.

For those wishing to experience a complete change in living environment I would recommend this curious gatehouse at Annes Grove , Castletownroche, Co Cork. Living rooms are contained in a stone tower divided into two small areas one above the other reached by the narrowest hand cut stone stairs one could hope to find. A kitchen/ washing area is in an attached lean-to structure with all modern facilities.

The whole structure is very well decorated and very well heated. The stove heater is a cosy optional extra which adds to the charm of the place. There are no electronic facilities and so a sense of isolation is accentuated, an ideal spot for those who want to get away completely.

Access to the extensive gardens at Annes Grove is a bonus which will delight the gardeners among the guests. The garden has a unique collections of plants but one needs to track down one of the garden staff to get full value from the fine specimens on show.
Perfection is hard to find and a major problem with the development is the state of the area around the parking spot. After rain this becomes very muddy and traffic to and from the farm area compounds the problem. Keeping the mud out of the kitchen( and the car!) becomes impossible.
A stay at Annes Grove is for the active. Yet a stay would be improved by a list of local sites of interest and walking activities. It would also be nice if local eating facilities were listed. Not every guest will want to eat in every night!

Really enjoyed the ambience and experience of staying at this location. Organising and booking the stay was fine. the caretaker Michael did what he needed to do and was helpful. The locality was nice especially Doneraile walk and facility- this could be highlighted more as something to do/visit. The village we enjoyed especially the Spinning Wheel where the food, owners, staff and locals were nice people. I walked up to the "big" house and was saddened by the deterioration of what must once have been a vibrant home and very beautiful gardens. I hope someday someone will restore. Annes Grove was comfortable once we got the fire going. we probably should have brought warmer clothes for time of year but i guess this type of building will be cool anyway. Very peaceful and relaxing - great for reading and quiet time. One small addition for bedroom upstairs would be a pot to pee in as some older guests may want to "go" during the night. Going down stairs to toilet could be hazourdous for some!?. Overall an enjoyable experience. Thank You and keep up the good work.

We had a wonderful stay at Anne's grove. A suggestion- when the castle has been empty for a week in winter, perhaps the heating could be put on at least 24 hours before guests arrive as we spent the weekend in our coats, inside, with the stove going and storage heater on!
Perhaps a few flagstones to the car parking area would be a good idea as it was extremely mucky !
Michael was most obliging when I locked myself out and went out of his way to be helpful.

Anns grove miniature castle is an amazing place, very beautiful and full of old world charm. The internal staircase is an amazing feature. Michael who lives nearby provided a great service and had the place nice and warm for us. Little on the expensive side for 2 night would be the only gripe.

We felt lost in an enchanted forest. It was one of the most memorable, exciting, romantic, child-like dream get-aways ever!
Exceptional service too: friendly and helpful but appropriately reserved.
The standard of Conservation is remarkable.
The location seems more remote than in actuality and all spotlessly clean (except one frying pan which is no biggie).
It's a bit mucky from car to door but this adds to the charm. I wouldn't change a single thing.
We expected it to be freezing (January in a stone castle!) but it was very comfortable (bring slippers though, the stone stairs ARE cold).
Great for walks, adventures down overgrown lane ways or a pint and honest dinner in the nearby village (2miles).

One small request - that there be a map of the Garden in the house to help orient visitors. Having the fire was really important. Kitchen well equipped and great shower. We walked Kilviullen loop which was nearby and gave great views. The spiral stair was dramatic and quite safe using the rope.

My wife and I booked this one bedroomed miniature castle for a two night stay for her birthday recently. We loved this miniature castle set in lovely gardens and were fortunate to have the weather to explore with our dog. The castle itself is heated with night storage heaters and was very cosy on arrival and throughout the stay. There is a stove with enough fuel for one fire and a cosy sitting room, tech fans beware there is no television or wifi here. The bedroom is accessed via a stone spiral staircase so probably not suitable for those with mobility issues. We brought our own food with us but the local pubs serve food and there is a chinese takeaway and kebab house in the town which is a short drive or a half hour walk away.
Overall a lovely getaway with little thoughtful additions such as a bookshelf which is well stocked with copies of the Avoca cookbooks also available. Highly recommended.

Another great Irish Landmark Trust holiday. It is a privilege to stay in an authentic location such as this sensitively restored gatelodge. All amenities provided were excellent resulting in a very comfortable stay.

We would definitely go back again but it is more likely that we will try another ILT property in the New Year as they are all excellent! This is our third stay having also been at Clomontagh Castle and the Barbican gate.

Thanks ILT for an excellent job.

Staying in Annes Grove makes you feel you've gone back in time to the era of Knights in shining armour, and Damsels in distress. You have your own Turret, Battlement area, winding stone stairs and slitty windows. All very medieval. Out back, you have a mass of acreage to discover, and the beauty of it all is that you have it all to yourself, so now you're like landed gentry!
Back to the mini castle where the kitchen and shower are recent additions, and do take something from the overall charm of the place. The sitting room is small and so easy to heat, making it very cozy and comfortable. There is no television, which is no bad thing, making conversation the norm. The bedroom is grand and big, with a fine size bed in the middle. Unfortunately, if you've a weak bladder, it's all the way down the stone stairway with you to the toilet. Not a trip to be taken lightly, or when drunk....
Annes Grove is a couple of miles from the nearest village, Castletownroche, so don't be expecting a leisurely walk home after an evening in the splendid 'local' The Spinning Wheel. It's fairly close to Cork City (approx 30km I think), with the likes of Fermoy, Lismore and Doneraile (with it's fine park) all within easy driving. Take a trip up over the 'V' from Lismore for a fantastic view over the Tipperary plains, backed by the lofty Galtees.
All in all, a great place to go, but don't be expecting too much action, bar that you make yourself...

The Gatehouse St Anne's Miniature Castle at Castletownroche Co Cork was easy to find as we had clear instructions and the road was well marked. We had 3 lovely fine Autumn days there. Were met as arranged and shown the castle with all necessary instructions.
As pointed out the accommodation is definitely only for a couple. It is Miniature, but has everything you need for an unique experience. There is no Wi Fi , no TV . No worries. The inside was cosy and warm with night store heaters, and a fire in the lounge ready to light if required.Books in the lounge and bedroom to read .The kitchen was roomy enough with microwave , fridge, oven and most things you would need?
The bathroom was roomy , the shower big and good water pressure.
the bedroom upstairs was roomy with a comfy double bed.
The spiral staircase was not for the faint hearted.Great care required , however this is pointed out in the information before going there.I would be be sure that I was able to negotiate these type of stairs before going. We decided to leave our suitcase downstairs and change down there during our stay. This worked for us.
We had a lovely woodland walk.Pheasants everywhere. The gardens and big house are not open to visitors.
The village had several pubs one could go to.A Centra grocery shop .
We were handy to Mallow and most main roads.
Overall it was a wonderful experience, and would love to try another one of The Irish Landmark Self Catering places some time.Perhaps with out the stairs.

The property was very nice, in that it was well-situated (though was a bit tough to find) in a very pastoral setting. The gatehouse is certainly impressive as you pull up. One drawback was that it was somewhat "buggy" - perhaps a risk one undertakes when staying in Ireland in the summer. The lack of AC (and really, why would you need it?) means windows are open, which means bugs find their way inside. Never were the bugs a true nuisance, but they were noticeable. The other main drawback was size. It photographs MUCH bigger than it is in person. Which is fine! But be prepared to stay in a SMALL location. Also, the stairs were very narrow and steep. Again, not a problem for us, as we were able to ascend and descend without falling, but it is worth noting and knowing going in.

The benefits were great, however. The attached gardens, while definitely giving that "off the beaten path" feeling, were magnificent. The outdoor seating, while simple, was great, and sitting out reading until 10pm sharing some wine was one of the highlights of our trip. The locals in town were very friendly, and both Cork (one of Ireland's most underrated cities) and Blarney were easily accessible, and the drive from Shannon airport only took an hour. Also, the shower and water pressure was surprisingly great. Finally, the property caretaker was great as well - very accessible and friendly, responsive to our needs.

While it did not have the pampered romantic splendor one may be seeking (remember it IS self-catering), it is a great property, and well worth a stay for the right folks.

Anne's Grove is a magical place to stay. The quaint castle is an authentic and yet extremely cosy place. We enjoyed many hours relaxing, eating al fresca, to the sounds of wildlife and trees rustling. We went for a wonderful walk down through the forest, which led us to hydrangea rock and the walled gardens. Some of the paths were overgrown and we only wish we had known to bring hiking gear as there is plenty of (careful) exploring to be done. Persevere at the beginning, when you make it through the initial overgrowth the walk beyond is easy and enjoyable. The walled gardens are just stunning, with an amazing array of flowers, birds and a cute little bench to sit on while taking it all in! Michael was extremely helpful and nice, and we have absolutely no complaints about the entire experience with the Irish Landmark Trust. We would definitely recommend staying at Anne's Grove!

Our stay at Annes Grove was really pleasant and relaxing. Our dog came with us and settled in immediately. The castle itself was lovely and the stove in the living room made it really cozy. The only minor grip we had was the restriction on access to the gardens which is stated in the information sheet to be between 10 and 5. As the gardens were not open to the public due to storm damage it provided a tranquil haven to stroll around in and enjoy. Without the amenity of the gardens it would be a less attractive offering particularly if you have a dog. The surrounding roads are nor busy but teey do not provide as pleasant an environment to be in.

Great place for a short get away from the busyness of life. Great to have the Annes Grove Gardens at the back door to explore and walk. Lovely and cosy with heating on.

Loved everything about it. Magical little castle. Great walking paths. Michael is the perfect host!! We were celebrating our 32nd wedding anniversary and it will be the most memorable one so far.

Arriving at Anne's Grove you immediately know you are at something a little special. The arched gateway opens to a beautiful woodland trail and your own mini castle. It's magical! The castle itself is lovely inside and the decor suits it perfectly. The log burning stove keeps you nice and toasty. The village of Castletownroche is a short drive up a lovely lane and it has a shop and a couple of great pubs! What else could you possibly need! Michael was a great house manager, we were there the week after the worst storms Ireland's seen for a while and not only was he clearing trees from the road and gardens, he helped us get the electric back on after a power cut! We had a lovely time at Anne's Grove and look forward to returning to Cork in the near future!

My wife and I recently spent a weekend in Annes Grove gate lodge. As a place to go for a quiet weekend away it was excellent. We loved it and will for sure return again.

We stayed here for three nights during our honeymoon. It was just magical! In particular having access to the gardens was like having a private estate all to ourselves. Just wonderful. So quiet and peaceful.

Beautiful place. Very quiet, with really very lovely grounds. Taking time to explore and relax. Would have liked more history of the estate available to read up on.

My husband and I recently stayed at Annes Grove Miniature Castle for 2 nights while we were in Ireland for our honeymoon. The "castle" was lovely and equipped with all of the comforts of home. It is located on a quiet road and was very private. It really did feel like we had our very own castle for a few days. We would definitely stay there again.

We loved our stay at Annes Grove! Helen and michael were wonderful hosts. We especially loved the "secret" garden. We alo enjoyed the little village of Castlerouch. The manager of Nash'e garage was very helpful. We'll be back again I hope.

A truly magical and enchanting place to stay, we were both speechless when we arrived at the big black gates. The castle continued to romance us during our stay. Both the property and the location are perfect in so many ways.
