Galley Head light keeper's houses, in their elevated setting, make an ideal location for relaxing and getting away from it all. The views from every angle are awe inspiring and breathtaking. Special Notes: There are cliffs nearby and children should be supervised at all times.

  • Sleeps 4 people. 1 Double Room and 1 Twin Room.
  • Pets are not permitted.

Had 3 nights here in December with my wife and 2 boy's aged 10 and 13.
It's an amazing place. Has a magic feel to it. It's a total escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. We were blessed with good weather so we could take full advantage of the amazing views. Gerald is a legend. Gave us a guided tour of the lighthouse and was very nice to deal with.

I booked both houses for a family gathering and we had an amazing time. We were greated at the lighthouse by Gerard and Gail and I have to say we felt so welcome and they were so helpful and lovely. The lighthouse is a truly amazing spot and I'll definitely be back.

Thank you for your review of this amazing location. Both properties give a great experience of being isolated in an old keepers cottage and enjoying the same memories of the keeper, of lighting the fire and enjoying the company around you with no distractions, while the sea crashes below. We look forward to your return!

We stayed during Storm Bert and had the pleasure of meeting Gerald. lt was lovely to have such a knowledgeable and welcoming former lighthouse keeper (!) greet us and assure us during a red weather warning at Galley Head. It made the experience all the more special. I truly hope that The Irish Landmark Trust realise the importance and value of having beautiful, enthusiastic people like Gerald in Galley Head and Suzan in St.John's Point greet and welcome guests.

This was a beautiful stay for our Wedding Anniversary. The location of course, is truly wonderful and breathtaking.
The stay in the light house was memorable and our welcome from Gerald and Marie was warm and friendly. A delightful couple who would help in any way to add to your stay.
The house provides you with everything needed to make it your ‘home’ for the duration of your stay and was spotless. We lit the fire and made the living room even more cosy. The house is full of gorgeous old books , pictures and bits of memorabilia linked to the sea.
The surrounding area is very beautifully wild and picturesque. The lighthouse light at night was unforgettable, with its light gently rotating its beam into our bedroom . Rather wonderful …
We really loved our stay and would definitely return.
It felt sad to leave the peace and tranquility.

My mother, sister and I had an unforgettable stay at the Galley Head Lightkeeper's House. There aren't enough words to express what an amazing place it is. To be in a such a beautiful and wild location, to be able to stay in a historical home, and learn about Gerald's family and his experiences was a privilege.

We were met by Meria - possibly the loveliest lady in Ireland - who showed us the home and was kind enough to take us on a tour of the lighthouse which was a amazing treat.

The house was spotless and had everything we needed. The beds were very comfortable and we felt at a home straight away. The small touches like hot water bottles, books, interesting photos and artworks made it even better. I read Gerald's book while I was there and can recommend it to anyone, whether they're staying or not! What a fascinating man.

This holiday was very special to my family - Gerald and Meria's hospitality made it even more so and I thank them from the bottom of my heart xxx

Our stay at Galley Head Lighthouse was nothing short of spectacular. The setting, the legacy, the comfort, the books, the small touches (hot water bottles for a cool night), and especially the very warm welcome from Gerry. How lucky were we to hear his stories and get his tour! We watched The Great Lighthouses of Ireland at night (in our device), and came to appreciate lighthouses and Gerry’s experiences even more. The weather was the icing on the cake. We love this Landmark arrangement and will definitely look for more if we get to Ireland again. Thank you for this wonderful memory.

Facilities were amazing, even luxurious covers for the hot water bottles!

We could not have asked for a better accommodation and more peaceful setting. Everything lived up to expectations. The house was cozy and welcoming and the view from the kitchen table out to sea mesmerizing. The location is stunning and the walks from the lighthouse into the surrounding countryside and along the cliffs were utterly enjoyable, even in the rain. Gerald was a pleasure to deal with and always available. We are already looking forward to another and more prolonged stay in the near future.

What a stunning place. Set in the most beautiful and dramatic part of the world, the house is warm bright, spacious and very comfortable. It felt very homely. There was everything we needed for a relaxed stay. Gerald gave us a tour of the lighthouse which really made the history of it all come to life. He and Maria are absolutely charming and on hand if we needed them.

We stayed here for 2 nights and got the best of all weathers for the stay. Sun, wind and rain. The sense of peacefulness when just listening to the surroundings was something to experience. The actual house is quite large and met all our needs. Having no tv or wifi was a nice change from the norm. The host Gerald is a gentleman and a fascinating man. His knowledge of lighthouses is second to none. If you're staying here I'd recommend spending your time at the house and surrounding area. The lighthouse itself is spectacular, particularly at night.

My family of 4 had the most amazing stay at Galley Head Lighthouse. We wished we could have stayed for much longer. The views from every window are breathtaking. The grounds are gorgeous. The home is so comfortable and clean. And Gerald was simply a delight to get to know. He was a consummate host, always available to help with any needs and questions. And his tour of the lighthouse was a highlight of the trip. We were all so sad to leave and very much hope to return one day. We also would love to visit more Landmark properties.Thank you for our stay and the memories and beautiful photos we get to keep with us for a lifetime.

Our stay in Galley Head was fabulous. The location and scenery are absolutely awe inspiring. The house itself is warm and cosy, with a very relaxing feel. Each window offers a unique view of the beautiful surroundings. Gerald was a pleasure to deal with from the first phone call to checkout. He is very kind with his time and full of interesting conversation on the history of the lighthouse and the houses themselves. All of this along with the privacy and exclusiveness of the property make for a very relaxing and enjoyable break away. A truly unique and memorable stay.

Its a beautifully presented house with sea views from every window. The history and experience of staying in the Lighthouse cottage is different to anything else. Lots of wildflowers birds and dolphins seen over our weekend stay. The caretaker is a former lighthouse keeper and he was completely fascinating and arranged a visit inside the lighthouse which was the icing on the cake for us, Lots of interesting lighthouse related material in the house too.

We found this place to stay via the Irish Landmark Trust page and we had a most wonderful time. What a beautiful landscape, so calm, no other people. You could to do relaxing walks. We love this idea to preserve historical places. On the other side the house was very cosy and kitchen und bathroom were modern. So we missed nothing.
We love to sit at the kitchen table and look at the Atlantic Ocean or in the sitting room and reading the stories about the Butler's family or the book about the Irish Lighthouses. And meeting Gerald Butler was even better. He told us lots about his family, the house and his duties in the lighthouse. On the last day he took us for a tour onto the lighthouse. That was thrilling. We love it very much. Thanks also to Gail Butler for the very helpful recommendations.
We will come back certainly.

We rented both cottages, so my review for cottage #1 covers both. We really enjoyed out time at the cottages and will surely be back. Two night was definitely too short a stay! The managers were fantastic and accommodating. We really enjoyed a tour of the lighthouse and seeing sea lions below in the water.

Thank you for your great review. Your stay supports our charity to maintain our buildings, the lighthouses experience harsh weather so the care for these unique buildings is never finished. I hope you can try another of our properties again soon. Both properties have open fires and a couple of hours fuel is provided. Should you plan cosy nights infront of the fire you will need to ask the local House Manager where more fuel can be sourced from.

The view of the sea from House 2 kitchen is superb and was a highlight of our stay. We sat in the cosy sittingroom each evening and didn't need to light the fire.
The house is beautifully furnished and kept in meticulous order. The kitchen is well equipped, though I would suggest adding a spatula and a better grater!
Gerald gave us a great welcome and, as a former Lightkeeper, has many interesting stories of lighthouse lore.

Can't really start with anything but... wow! That's what my family and I kept saying as we were driving up for our weekend stay at The Galley. Wish we could have stayed longer. The location is absolutely stunning and the quarters themselves were comfortable, well stocked, and very clean. It was a treat getting to meet and talk with Gerald. He was warm and welcoming, very helpful in explaining the layout of the lighthouse and how everything worked, and shared its fascinating history. I really appreciated the extra time Gerald spent talking with my Dad after finding out he had helped restore lighthouses during his time in the US Coast Guard. We felt super fortunate to get this experience and wouldn't hesitate to do it again. Highly recommend.

Thank you for your great review, this property is all about the landmark location that the general public has no access to so is very private for our guests. Our House Managers Meet & Greet on check-in/out is loved by guests rather than more modern rentals with lockbox, its nicer to find out local knowledge and tips in person in addition to our Property Information File, all have very interesting additional stories to tell.

The lighthouse was amazing and Gerry was extremely helpful, friendly, and easy to contact. We stayed out at the lighthouse the whole stay instead of going into town, and there were gorgeous walks around the lighthouse; we could have stayed for a full week without needing to ever get back in the car. I will most certainly be back! Make sure to light yourself a turf fire at least one night! As someone who's career is in non-profit work, I greatly appreciate that the price is not set ridiculously high.

Thank you for your great review and mentioning the local House Manager Gerald who is an excellent ambassador for both us and this property. Its great to read your appreciation on the value of this property, after costs the rest of your stay pays for the maintenance of the property, as an older building, it needs a little more attention than an average holiday let.

Fabulous from start to finish!

We had a great stay at Galley Head. The drive out to the gleaming white lighthouse is a delightful part of the experience, the scenery is amazing and then the views from the property are even more stunning. It is wild and exposed but beautiful! Both bedrooms have a direct outlook towards the lighthouse and its comforting beam. Gerard greeted us warmly on arrival and gave us a tour of the property. We were delighted with the spacious yet cosy layout of the cottage. The kitchen is very well stocked with everything you may need to prepare breakfast or an evening meal. The views from the kitchen are stunning! We loved the big dining room table, it gave a sense of occasion for our meals. Although it was hard to leave we did venture out and enjoyed exploring the area, in particular the charming and colourful town of Clonakilty. We loved driving around and discovering little beaches and welcoming pubs along this stretch of the Wild Atlantic Way. We left relaxed and refreshed and wanting to return.

We had an amazing stay in Galley Head House 2 during storm Isha in January 2024. I booked the stay as a Christmas present for my husband Gerry and hoped for some spectacular weather for mid January and couldn’t believe our luck to be there for a substantial storm such as Isha. Swells were huge and we couldn’t walk around the back of the lighthouse due to the strength of the winds. We walked down the road and the blowhole at the bottom of the hill was spectacular, spuming spray high into the air. Be careful walking around here as the blowhole is far more extensive from google air than from the ground and the nearby cliffs are clay not rock and therefore more prone to collapse. A wonderful experience in a cosy house with the fire roaring up the chimney and the storm roaring outside. The lighthouse attendant and house manager Gerald was a pleasure to meet as with his family association with Galley he is the perfect person to meet and greet and with his extensive lighthouse experience here and in many of the other lighthouses around Ireland he is a font of lighthouse knowledge. We met Maria who kept the house pristine and was also very welcoming. I will certainly be coming back again within the year. Cannot recommend this lovely place enough. We also stayed in Wicklow lighthouse a number of years ago which was super but you need to be reasonably fit to manage the stairs.

We are a walking group of 8 friends that stayed in Galley Head lighthouse cottages on January 19th to 21st ,for a big Birthday celebration and we were also joined by "STORM ISHA"which made the costal experience more dramatic!!The cottages were so comfortable and cosy and so in theme what they would have been when in use as the lightkeepers home. The location and views from the cottages was amazing,The highlight of our stay was meeting Gerald Butler, who is the lighthouse cottage attendant keeper and third generation lighthouse keeper,on both sides .Gerald took us on a tour of the lighthouse and joined us for tea telling us the history of the lighthouse and his very interesting life ,been born into parents of light house keepers.Gerald has written a very interesting memoir called "The Lighthkeeper" Highly recomme a stay at Galley Head and if you get the opportunity to meet Gerald it will make it even better.

I m regular here and It s Always a Great pleasure to come back here for few days.
All my friends loved It.
This part of the house was perfect warm on our arrival while house 1 was cold but Gerald immediately fix the problem with the heater and in few minutes the environment get warmer and Warmer quickly in both environments. Unfortunately the lock of the main Door in house 1 was damaged when we arrived and thank God as we rented both apartments House 1 and 2 so we had access thru the other House 2 Door all the time.
On our Departure Gail promptly provided for the maintanance Man to fix the Door and its locking system in house 1 eventually.
House 2 was freshly re-painted and smell was a bit strong at the beginning but bearable. I noticed a lack of tools and pans in both houses comparing the other structures managed by Landmark trust like Blackhead lighthouse in Co.Antrim or The old Kiln Wing in bushmills considering that they all self catering properties It s important they are well equipped.
1 of the 2 toasters wasn t working properly I can t Remember which one of the 2 houses.
In general the response is Always positive. Gerald and Gail are 2 lovely guys and people enjoy their stay here all the times!
Thanks to y'all!!

Thank you for your very detailed review. Gerald is an excellent House Manager for property 2 and knows both houses very well, its great to read that he helped you with property 1 immediately, which was very kind and lucky as you arrived quite late at night and arrivals after 9pm is normally a self check-in, and returned the next day to give you a tour of the lighthouse itself. This is a very old property and some of the old fittings give up, we do not compromise in character so always repair the original parts, which may not be possible for an immediate resolution, as would a modern day door handle, but thank you for bearing with us, im pleased to say this is a rare fault, these cottages were built to last. We have had very extensive work done at both properties this year to keep them in tip top condition for our guests, internal painting for this property started as soon as the busy summer season ended. There are a few small internal changes happening in the next few weeks to make further improvements, I will be following up your comments to ensure our kitchen stock is replenished

Gorgeous stay! Gerald is a gem and was so sweet! He gave us a tour of the lighthouse which was so cool! The house itself is very nice, the walls have marks due to plastering but other than that everything’s very nice. It was good value for money and the views out of every window are stunning. It’s especially beautiful to see the lighthouse at work during the night. Even though it says there’s only one bathroom there is a large toilet downstairs with a shower. It’s worth doing a big shop in Clonakilty on the way over as there isn’t a shop nearby. There was salt, pepper, teabags and some oil in the cupboards and there are bath towels. I’d highly recommend staying here!

We have stayed here many times and as always the service and welcome from Gerald Butler and Maria was second to none. They are so very helpful. We stayed for another week in Galley Head Cottage 2, having had a successful week last year. Once again, Gerald was lovely and the house was clean. Unfortunately there had been some water damage and lots of repair work had taken place, leaving the rooms with an unfinished appearance. I had asked why ILT hadn't told me about this before I got there, but the reply was they don't tell people when they are doing renovations. However, even with the poor appearance of the works inside, nothing could take away from the breathtaking views outside, the friendliness of the people and the huge variety of things to do in the area- whale watching, surfing, sea kayaking, activity centres and beautiful beaches. I hope to return to galley head at another time, when the works are finished and to enjoy this truly special place.

Thank you for your review. Galley Head house 2 had major repairs done before high season to keep this property in its best condition. In Galley Head 2, this was replacing old concrete repairs with the correct lime plaster to enable the house to breath as an old building should. This plaster has been drying out over the summer months. Unfortunately the heavy summer bookings have prevented us from being able to get this property fully painted internally and will be completed in September 2023. Unfortunately all our heritage properties may be at some point receiving live remedial work at any time, we fit this inbetween bookings. As a charity we try not to close our lovely properties during high season for maintenance, as this income is what secures the important repairs and maintenance planned for the low season. Im sorry this has affected your short stay and our bookings office have dealt with this accordingly.

We stayed a week at Galley Head Lighthouse, visiting as many lighthouses in the area as possible.

The lighthouse and cottages are in the most idyllic location. We chose to keep the shutters open at night so we could see the beams of the lighthouse sweeping across the night!

We were warmly welcomed by Gerald, who was the most fantastic host! Nothing was too much trouble, and we were also given a tour of the lighthouse, so that was the icing on the cake.

To be able to experience life in a lighthouse keeper's cottage in all weathers was fantastic, and to share it with friends was perfect.

We had everything we wanted, the facilities were excellent, and we certainly didn't miss not having a TV. Wifi would have been useful, but it wasn't a major issue.

You need to spend at least a week here to appreciate the place, anything shorter just is not long enough!

Thank you for the most fantastic week at Galley Head, and thank you, Gerald for making our week so special. We hope to return again soon!

From the pre-arrival chats and emails with Gerald, the house manager, to the drive up the narrow winding road to the peninsula where the lighthouse sits, everything about this stay was excellent. Gerald couldn't be more helpful and informative about the area and gave us a great tour and historical highlights of the lighthouse itself.
There is so much to do nearby, and highly recommend the marked walkways of different distances around from Long Strand to Castlefreke.

We received a very warm welcome from the house manager and attendant at Galley Head Lighthouse, Gerald, on our arrival; who also gave us a tour of the working lighthouse. I stayed four nights with my son Ronan and brother John and visited Mizen Head signal station where my dad was stationed in the early 1970s; and took a trip to the Fastnet Rock lighthouse where I was a temporary keeper for 4 weeks in June 1986. West Cork is stunningly beautiful and we visited Kinsale, Cobh and Clonakility, am9ng ,any other places. There is a bar called O'Donavans not far from the lighthouse where we had a few drinks. Galley Head lightkeepers house 2 which we stayed in is kept beautiful and was a cosy retreat to relax into after a full day out exploring the sights.

Four of us spent two nights at Galley Head and had a wonderful time. The property was spotlessly clean, warm and comfortable and the property manager Gerald was responsive and extremely helpful with all of our questions. A highlight of the weekend was getting to go into the lighthouse to learn about its history from Gerald. The sea and cliff views from the property are spectacular and if you enjoy stargazing Galley Head is a must!
During our stay we enjoyed trips to Clonakilty and Skibbereen where there is an abundance of coffee shops and restaurants. We also visited the local beach and sauna which are located 5 mins drive from the property.
The booking process was seamless and we plan to stay at more Landmark Trust properties in the future, thank you for an amazing experience!

Firstly let me say I'm a lighthouse enthusiast so half the reason I came to galley was to meet Gerald the former keeper & current attendant at Galley, who is an absolute gentleman with an amazing life story. My partner and I had a wonderful time at Galley the beautiful views, stunning lighthouse with it's Fresnel Lens still in operation. Speaking to Gerald to hours was just a pleasure, the dwellings are authentic, warm, clean & fully furnished. If you are looking for a real lighthouse experience then galley is the location. I will definitely be back to stay again.

Galley lighthouse should be on everyone's bucket list.
A place to get away from it all, relax in comfort and soak up the history of the place. Read a book of play music
Gerald was very helpful and so interesting.

We stayed two nights and yet fully experienced the magic of the Lighthouse, from starry nights to foggy mornings.
We had a beautiful walk on the cliffs and loved the seclusive atmosphere of a place that has so many stories to tell. Some of which we had the honour to know through the words of our wonderful host, Mr, Gerald Butler.

With family in the area, we were taken to visit Galley Head Lighthouse and were blown away by the views and atmosphere. Upon my return to the States, I discovered that the lightkeepers' houses were available to rent.

For our next return to Ireland, we booked both units. That gives you private access to the entire headland. The area adjacent to the houses is securely fenced so we were comfortable giving our grandchildren free run of the area.

The atmosphere of the houses is "old farmhouse" but well maintained. Remember that they are "self-catering" so you'll need to stop in nearby Clonakilty (10 miles, 30 minutes) for foods and snacks. It's probably worth securing some household goods as well, e.g., soap, shampoo, paper products, etc.

The site management team is actually part of the family who at one time occupied the houses as lightkeepers. They literally have written a book. Their stories alone are worth the trip.

In 2022, we returned for a third visit again booking both houses with new grandchildren.

The views morning, mid-day, and evening are extraordinary. I call them "magical."

Galley Head Lightkeeper's Houses continue to be on our "must" list for Ireland.

We stayed for a week in this wonderful property which has been sympathetically decorated in keeping with it's former role as the house of the Lightkeepers.
Tasteful, pared back decor allows the beauty of the situation and the majesty of the sea to fill the house.
We loved the views...in all weather and the comfort of this iconic building.

Enjoyed three nights on this second stay at Galley Head with its unparalleled views of surrounding headlands and the open Atlantic. House manager Gerald Butler, the Attendant Lightkeeper, is the consummate host and a font of knowledge about the light's history and Irish Lights in general. You'll not find a friendlier welcome anywhere.

The house is cozy, well-furnished and wonderfully isolated.

Our trip to the Galley Head lighthouse is one of the most memorable experiences we have had on our trip to Ireland. Gerald Butler was an outstanding host and tour guide The house was very comfortable and clean. A very relaxing stay. At night watching the beams from the lighthouse and the millions of stars in the night sky was epic. The local scenery was breathtaking. My wife and I will definitely return and recommend to friends and family. Thanks a million for a great experience.

We spent a weekend at Galley Head Lighthouse in September 2021 - something we have wanted to do for a long time now.

To say this is a special place is an understatement. The views are spectacular and ever changing, depending on the weather. The lighthouse itself is absolutely stunning and we were able to learn so much about it's history thanks to Gerald, the Lighthouse Keeper - an amazingly knowledgeable and interesting man.

The property itself had absolutely everything you needed for a self-catering stay. It is spotlessly clean throughout and absolutely full of original character.

If you are lucky enough to stay here, take the time to soak it all in. After 2 days here, we came away more relaxed than I ever thought possible, we have definitely left a little piece of our hearts behind.

Caretaker Ger is a wonderful asset to the house, and having grown up there himself, brings an unrivalled level of knowledge. He is a great story teller and he maintains the house to a spotless level.
It's a very comfortable house, with a well equipped kitchen.
Not much scope for walks in the immediate location, but nice areas a short drive away.
Landmark trust should provide more towels, incl proper bath towels.
House was a bit light on loo paper, and fuel for more than one night open fire should be provided.
Overall a very nice visit.

No words can adequately express the beauty of this location. For those wanting to get away from the hustle and biustle of modern life, there is no better location in Ireland for restful contemplation of a quite magnificant viedw of the Atlantic Ocean froma comfortable home accommodation. Magnificent location. After dusk the beams of light rotate & illuminate the sections of sky over land & sea, on a calm night you could sit by the sea wall & watch it for hours. The house itself is full of character & exudes a sense of calm and tranquillity from another era. We were fortunate during our stay that the weather was good so sunbathing & eating out on the front lawn was the order of the day. The caretaker (Gerry) a true gentleman, was most helpful & accommodating. Great weekend, could not recommend more....

As we were one family staying in the two houses it worked out great loads of space to move around plenty of bathrooms for five people to use, the house was spotless which made me feel very comfortable, great to go out for walks and see the aera which is beautiful ,and the light house was great ,at night it was so great the lights on the water made it so special ,Gearld was great he gave us so much information about our surroundings as he was the lighthouse keeper before it went automatic and it was also his home so he was great .

Less than half an hour from Clonakilty Galley Head Lighthouse is located on a headland at the end of a penisula in the Celtic sea with spectacular sea views on all sides. The house is very comfortable with an open fire and all of the facilities you'd require. For people who like splendid isolation this is the perfect location. The lighthouse is steeped in history and the house manager Gerald Butler is a mine of information on the area and the lighthouse in particular as Gerald and his family have been Galley Head lighthouse keepers for generations. The sea views, the isolation and the light punctuating the sky over the sea and land at night are major reasons to stay at Galley Head. We loved it and definitely plan to return.

Galley Head has been on my list of places to stay in for many years. My stay at Galley head was amazing. It measured up to the high expectations I had for the weekend.
Firstly we were met by Gerald Butler, former LightKeeper at Galley Head and he was so helpful and shared a huge amount of information about the lighthouse and the building. Gerald was very generous with his time and set us up for a very relaxing stay at Galley Head. The LightKeep's house 2 that we stayed in was full of charm and had amazing views of the sea and lighthouse.
Best of all you can lie in bed upstairs with shutters open and watch the lighthouse beams all night.

This was a very special staycation. Everything was perfectly clean and Gerard was the perfect host. We saw dolphins form the lighthouse playing in the morning sun. It’d be lovely to come back with family or friends.

We were delighted with our stay . The setting lends itself to dreaming and an appreciation of the sea. We were convinced we would see whales though we didn't. We did see dolphins though. The Managers were very welcoming and informative. Great thanks are due there . The two properties were ideal for a family holiday or a larger group. Meticulously clean one was very reassured in the context of Covid. A lovely swimming beach is close bye as is a longer strand for walking on. Terrific!

We had a wonderful stay at Galley Head. The kids really embraced the old charm of the house and loved playing in the garden under the loom of light at night. It was a magical experience and we feel privileged to have stayed on such an historic site. Gerald was very welcoming and was very generous with his time. We would love to return in the future!

If there is a prize for best staycation location then Galley Head 2 is pretty close to the top of the list. The setting is stunning, the property managers are friendly and helpful. The house is wonderfully airy and bright and it's got a working lighthouse in the front garden. What's not to like?!
There's no wifi, there's no TV and there's barely a mobile signal, but if you want to get away from it all and enjoy west Cork, Galley Head is pretty close to perfect.

This was our second stay at Galley Head. It’s become a spring ritual for my mum, husband, daughter and I. We love the unique experience of staying here and this year we had a full blown storm which made it even more special. The house is beautiful, well equipped, cosy and full of character. Gerald is an amazing host with a world of stories to tell. I have raved about this place to so many people and we are already looking forward to Spring 2021.

Just back from a 2 night stay in Galley Head Lighthouse Keepers Cottage No2. What a wonderful place to visit. We were met by Gerald who gave us a warm welcome and a quick tour of our accommodation. Couldn't be in a better place for a weekend of high winds! Clonakilty is only a 20min drive away and has plenty of places to eat and drink, a busy town. Also, went for brunch at the Fish Basket which is a must. Can't wait to get back to Galley Head and chat with Gerald again, he is a fountain of knowledge.

We had the most spectacular few days at Galley Head Lighthouse. Communication before check-in was quick and efficient, we were welcomed by Gerald Butler and told some very interesting stories about the history of the lighthouse. The surroundings are gorgeous.
The house is bright, clean, spacious and very warm. The only negative thing I would have to say is that the accommodation lacks basic supplies, which is frustrating given the distance to a local shop. No soaps/shampoo/conditioner/toothpaste, no dishwasher tablets, no condiments in the kitchen, no fuel to light the fire and only 1 roll of toilet paper (for a 4 night stay). I would still highly recommend a stay here - but come prepared!

Galley head is really in a beautiful location, easy access, ideal if you just want to get away from it all and relax and unwind. Top tip is open the front door after darkness and look up to the sky's , no light pollution, an amazing star lite sky. Gerald is much more than the house manager, hes a pure gentleman and if your interested in your surroundings, Gerald knows the full history, and you could spend days talking to him.

The house was cozy and warm . We also had the option of an open fire. The place was spotless . The kitchen had everything you need for cooking with a beautiful view of the ocean as you sat at the table. There was 2 bathrooms one upstairs and one downstairs(only in house 2) .The views were spectacular! Meria and Gerald were great, answering all the questions we had about the beautiful lighthouse and very friendly. You can sense the love they have for this place. We will definitely be back and will rent the other house too so family and friends can be with us to experience the beauty of this place .There is an adjoining door between the houses that can be opened in this situation .This stay was the highlight of our trip to Ireland .

What an immense joy to be back at The Galley!!
There is no such thing as 'Bad Weather' at The Galley,....in fact,... It's exactly what you need, to enjoy every aspect of it.
Wonderful warm, cosy, comfy and pleasing accomodation, in excellent condition and with all comforts, including hot water bottles!
Gerald and Meria, the people who take care of The Galley Light-keeper's Cottage No.2 are kindness itself.
Gerald made time on a busy day for him, to show my German friend (her first visit to The Galley) the Lighthouse. I had seen it during my previous visit.
My advice is: Do not stir from the precincts of the Lighthouse,...other than to walk.
Bring all your grub with you and enjoy being at this exceptional place.
We bought our take-away meals in the Lettercollum Kitchen Project, supplemented by items from Scally's excellent SuperValu, both in nearby Clonakilty.

I stayed with a group of friends between both houses at Galley head last weekend- we chose Galley Head lighthouse as a special venue to celebrate a big birthday and we all loved it! Gerald and Gail were both very welcoming and helpful, best of all Gerald gave us a tour of the lighthouse on arrival. The houses were full of character with no compromise to comfort! The location of course is spectacular, on the edge of the world. I especially loved watching the beams of light reaching out over the sea and in between the stars each night. Magical!

We had a stunning couple of days at Galley Head. Gerald and Maria welcomed us so pleasantly and told us some of the history of the lighthouse, which was riveting. I was especially moved and impressed by Gerald's Mum taking over the lighthouse - a really empowered woman! We were in the sea more than on land, swimming and catching mackerel - our 4 year old's first fish, but when we went back to Galley Head we were so cosy cooking our catch and discussing the day. We slept with the shutters and window open to allow the 5 flashes of the Galley Head character to watch over us. A truly magnificent stay - and we will be back for more as soon as we can. Our recent stay at the Galley Head exceeded all of our expectations. As the primary planner of four, I wanted to do something unique during our travels abroad. Since this was our first visit to Ireland (and Europe in general for 2 travelers) this was a perfect stop along our adventure. From the beginning, the process to secure the property was effortless and the staff at the Irish Landmark Trust were attentive and responsive to any questions I had along the way. Once secured, the transition to the property manager to coordinate our arrival was equally exceptional.

As we drove through the charming town of Clonakilty and watched our destination materialize in front of us, we knew that this was going to be a memorable experience. Even so, in that moment, one of my travel companions exclaimed, “I didn’t know that I ever wanted to stay at a lighthouse until now, I’m so excited.”

Once arrived, the property managers made us feel right at home! They were very helpful in answering all of our questions and provided us with some great local tips too. The rooms, exactly as pictured were surprisingly spacious, remarkably cozy and meticulously clean. Oh and let’s not forget about the views! Each window looked out to a photograph of its surroundings and the favorable weather allowed for some breathtaking sunrise/sunsets.

Our departure was bittersweet but we hope to be back soon! Until then, we highly recommend the Galley Head experience through the Irish Landmark Trust to anyone looking for a peaceful escape, a new adventure or the like. Cheers!

My wife, son, and I spent two nights in Galley Head 2 Lighthouse, and they were our favorite 2 nights of our 2 week vacation. Gerald Butler was our contact, and you'd have to look far and wide to find a better host. He used to be a light keeper, as were his parents, and he lived in the house we stayed in. He gave us a wonderful tour of the lighthouse, and even published a book (we were thrilled to buy a copy) about his life as a light keeper. We really enjoyed the time we spent with him.

The house itself was just wonderful. It was authentically furnished, and looked just as it was in Jerald's day; it even had a fireplace and peat to burn in it. The beds were comfortable, everything was clean, and the view from the kitchen table was to die for. The kitchen was well supplied and the appliances were easy to figure out (we're American, and Irish appliances are a bit different than ours). The property was beautiful, and we enjoyed our time exploring the area. The cows in the field next to us were friendly, and came right to the fence to spend some time with us!

We had an amazing few days in Galley Head for the May bankholiday weekend. Our hosts, Gerald and Maria was so welcoming, and their friendliness added immensely to our stay.

The setting is spectacular, and the house is very tastefully decorated, with amazing views of the sea from the kitchen and of the lighthouse from the sitting room & bedrooms.

The house itself is immaculate, and is very well equipped with everything you would need for a short stay, including a few basics such as teabags and cooking oil.

Just spent a couple of nights here. Very beautiful views, absolutely stunning location. Wished we were able to have stayed longer. Clean, comfortable, full of history and the hosts Gerald and Marie were lovely. Highly recommend a stay here. Next time will do 4 days. Great spot to do day trips. We went whale watching in Baltimore. Came back and there were seals at the lighthouse!

About as good as it gets location wise and 100% backed up by having Gerald and Marie around for proper chats. As nice a coupler as it sben my pleasure to meet for a long time. Fron 3 to 103 year olds the place is perfect. Having a deserted Red Strand on de doorstep and Clonakilty for de craic and de crusty bread nearby just an added bonus. Seems to attarct a good group of people too who appreciate the place which is always good to see.

Staying at Galley Head was a truly special experience. The landscape and atmosphere is stunning; the lightkeeper’s house is beautifully restored and renovated with all the comforts you’ll require; and the manager was so welcoming, friendly and helpful. Make sure you book for longer than you first think. You won’t want to leave!

We had a fabulous weekend in Galley Head. My only gripe is the departure time on the day you leave. 10am is very early, barely time to get up and have breakfast, especially with the 4pm entry time on arrival day. 11am would be more acceptable. Other than that couldn’t fault our experience.

Our weekend stay in the Galley Head Lighthouse Keeper's house could not have been better. The location and the house were wonderful and watching the light go around at night-time was hypnotic. We have an unforgettable 4 nights in Galley Head - our two young boys will hopefully remember it forever (particularly the lighthouse out the front and the whales/dolphins out the window (or at least that's what they convinced themselves the rocks were). The best of many worlds - old fashioned as there was thankfully no TV or WiFI but with modern comfort (warm, spacious and nicely decorated). With amazing views and to top it off a wonderful host with real deep family ties to the property and lighthouse keeping - can't wait to read the book.

Storm Ali arrived during our stay at Galley Head, but the howling wind actually added to the wonderful experience as we felt secure and safe in the house. It is truly remote from the modern world; we had to unlock and then lock two gates on the winding lane to the lighthouse. We had arranged to meet Maria on arrival and she gave us the keys and all necessary information during a familiarisation tour of the house. We also met Gerald during our stay, and we felt very privileged when he took us up the lighthouse and explained how it had functioned before automation. Irish Landmark Trust is very fortunate to have such a friendly, helpful couple looking after Galley Head 2.
There were two of us staying in the house, though it is suitable for four. It is comfortably furnished and well equipped, though the bed in one of the bedrooms is a double and too narrow for any couple used to a king-size bed; we slept in the second bedroom which has twin beds and they were very comfortable. The original shutters are on the windows, ensuring total darkness and good sleep. There are two bathrooms and there is an excellent shower in the downstairs bathroom.
From the dining table in the kitchen there is a marvellous view of the waves pounding on the rocks below, and there is a long beach for walks nearby. We really enjoyed our stay.

I've always loved visiting lighthouses and when I discovered that The Landmark Trust had some to stay in I was hooked.
We booked our trip in March/April and booked for end August for 3 three nights. We invited friends from Malin to join us and we had a wonderful trip. Gerry and Maria were excellent hosts and the house was spotless and had all the comforts we needed. We didn't see the lighthouse in our arrival due to fog but once visible the views were superb.
We visited many places nearby - Skibbereen museum for the Famine exhibition and also the Famine graves and memorials. We had lunch in Baltimore on a wet day but still worth visiting thus part of The Wild Atlantic Way.
We've recommended a trip to Galley Head to many friends.
Thank you Landmark Trust for looking after these wonderful lighthouses.

We had a wonderful stay at Galley Head Lighthouse. Gerald and Maria are friendly knowledgeable managers. They gave us suggestions for exploring the area and lots of historical information. The sea and coastal views are wonderful. One morning we watched a group of seals frolicking in the water around the rocky outcrops. The approach to the lighthouse is very picturesque through a cluster of houses and farmland along 1 track narrow gravel lanes shared with nearby farmers and their tractors. The accommodations were excellent. The kitchen is very well equipped and user friendly. The bedrooms and bathrooms are large and comfortable. We would highly recommend Galley Head if you like rural, peaceful and scenic locations.

This was the 4th ILT location we have had the pleasure of staying at and it did not fail to impress. The location is awsome. The historical value is awsome. But the people are what really sets this location apart from all the other beautiful ILT properties. The host is an important piece of Irish history himself! Gerald is one of the few remaining lighthouse keepers in Ireland. Not only did he and his partner show us the highest level of hospitality, but he went far beyond by providing a personal tour of the location that he has spent his life preserving. We can't wait to stay in our next ILT property.

Thank you so very much Jack for your support of Irish Landmark Trust. As a repeat guest you are continuing to help us in our mission to save, share, and sustain Ireland’s built heritage. It might not feel like your holiday is anything but a relaxing indulgence, but when you stay in an Irish Landmark property, you’re part of a community that’s helping to keep heritage alive. We are delighted to see that you got the full experience with Gerald, he is a wonderful gentleman and along with his partner we know that Galley Head is in very safe and caring hands.

From gale force winds rattling the windows and cozy afternoons spent reading by the fire, to brisk walks through the fields and along the Long Strand, it's difficult to imagine a better setting for a holiday. Gerald and Maria's many kindnesses further enhanced an already perfect stay.

Wow, it sounds like you had every type of experience this location can offer during your stay. It really is a fabulous location whether it is stormy or sunshine so Irish Landmark are delighted to hear you enjoyed it so much. Nothing like a safe and cosy lightkeeper's house to retreat to for windy nights and spend time watching the light of the lighthouse itself rotate in the darkness. Irish Landmark are very proud of the kindness and warmth of our House Managers so we are delighted to hear you were well looked after at Galley Head. We do hope to welcome you back here, or indeed another Irish Landmark Trust property, in the future. Thank you for supporting Irish Landmark's work.

Eight of us had a unique experience staying at this remote end of west cork with the Atlantic crashing on to the rocks on three sides of our vantage point. The houses have been brought back to their original glory and this entire site that is an invaluable asset to Irish tourism. Probably the best short stay location anywhere I have travelled in the world.

Galley Head is the perfect place to get away from it all and unwind. It was a very special experience, one which will we will remember fondly and will most certainly do again. In our busy lives we tend to forget how fantastic real peace and quiet can be, Galley Head is the perfect place to make one realize how good it can be to just relax with a nice glass or three of wine & chat for hours without distraction.
Gerald & Meria were great and we could have stayed and chatted with them for hours, Gerald has some great stories to tell and his passion for all things maritime shines out. We can't wait to return to this fabulous facility .

Booked the lightkeepers houses for a birthday getaway for family and some friends & will be patting myself on the back about this choice for some time. The houses are immaculate and surprisingly spacious -- combined with the absolutely stunning, remote location set against the sea and sky, it is the perfect place to clear the head and step away from everyday life. Adults and children alike were absolutely taken with it.

The care taken and the cleanliness of the cottage was evident from the moment we walked in, the bed linen and towels were of high standard and the kitchen was well stocked with cleaning materials and tea etc , very homely and a unique experience. Plenty of reading materials and leaflets about surrounding area. Very helpful warden.

What a view to wake up to every morning!! Blue sky, sound of the ocean and seagulls and this beautiful lighthouse in the middle of it! I am biased as my grandfather was Principle Keeper here and this is where I spent all of my summer holidays. Would definitely recommend for an Irish holiday with a twist. Totally unique!!

I spent two nights at Galley Head in June 2017, and it was a delightful experience. Beautiful walking down the roads at sunset, peaceful watching the sea. Gerald was an absolute gem, generous with his time and details, and gave us a lovely tour of the lighthouse itself. I definitely recommend this experience, and extend my thanks to Gerald for his care.

Galley Head is heaven on earth the experience at the light house was friendly, charming and very peaceful.
The light house cottage was impeccable . Gearld is such a kind, and extremely knowlegable man, we got to see him in action with the young school children who came to learn about the lighthouse, he was so sweet and patient with them.
This was the highlight of our trip to Ireland, we will recommend Galley Head to everyone we know in the USA..
Thank you so much.

We loved our light house stay (Galley Head 2) and especially enjoyed meeting Gerard Butler, who shared the history of this historic Light House with us. We had a fabulous weekend at Galley Head 2. The property was perfect for our family of 4, well equipped and very clean and comfortable. The views from the house were amazing - we loved having our meals at the kitchen table looking out to the western coastline. Chatting to our house manager Gerald about what life was like growing up there made it all the more interesting. We were lucky to have beautiful weather and enjoyed the views, the clear night sky and exploring the local beaches. We'll definitely be back!

Four visitors from Canada, we recently had the wonderful experience of spending four nights at Galley Head 2 - Lightkeeper's House. The scenery from the lighthouse was absolutely breathtaking in every direction. As we said in the visitor's book, Gerald & Marie, our Irish Landmark hosts, were so kind, helpful & welcoming that they truly made us feel we were staying in the home of friends. The house itself was absolutely spotless & provided us with everything we might need for a comfortable stay - washer & dryer, equipped kitchen, peat for the fireplace, reading materials, the list goes on. We all agree that among many great memories, one that will always stand out for us was the tour of the lighthouse which Gerald gave us when we first arrived. Hearing about the history of the light & his family's connection raised our experience of being there to another level entirely. We will always carry very fond thoughts of our time at Galley Head & would happily return again. Thank you to Irish Landmark Trust for your commitment to heritage preservation & for making it accessible to all.

This was our second time in Galley Lighthouse. The place is beautiful and Gerald and Marie are exquisite in making feel us at home. The place is beautifully decorated and clean. It is a perfect spot to relax and recharge and also visiting the beautiful places around. Gerald also has a lot of knowledge about the history of the place and it is an unique experience because he shares it with his guests. I cannot wait to be back again. Thanks again Gerald and Marie to make our stay so special and magic.

What a wonderful place to stay. If you want to get away from the hustle and bustle of city life, this is it.

The lighthouse is some way from the nearest people on very private land. We cooked breakfast every morning and dinner once. Restaurants in Clonokilty were good too.

We stayed for three nights in Galley Head lighthouse and had a wonderful time, It was so tranquil and beautiful. We were lucky to have the whole place to ourselves and had great weather. Such a different type of holiday, it was very educational for our young daughter and Gerald was extremely welcoming and a fountain of information. We had beautiful walks along the headland and it was amazing to lie in bed and see the lighthouse flashing around you. We would recommend it to anyone.

As always an excellent stay in Galley Head. The property is so well kept and maintained and the welcome provided by Gerald is so wonderful. He and Maria really do a wonderful job of looking after the place which is why we go back time after time, it really is a treasure.

Galley Head lighthouse is a very special place on the Wild Atlantic way. We have stayed there three times. It allows true time away from the modern world and allows us to be present in the now of the wind, waves on the ocean and gannets diving in the sea.
Gerard Butler our host is a treasure - knowledgeable and insightful he is a pleasure to meet and be with.
The beauty of Galley Head keeps changing yet is always breathtaking.
I cannot recommend it highly enough.

Staying in an Irish Landmark Trust Property is like being at home, but with more style and more space and a great welcome. Why go outside when so much is provided within? It would be a waste of an opportunity. We just soaked up the peace and quiet - Oops - the sea was raging and the wind howling but we were at peace knowing that the building had survived far worse battering. The books and local information kept us amused and the locals smiled when we ventured out.

A wonderful stay in a magical place. Only complaint is that the directions to the venue could have been better, as many of the crossroads have no signage and the route on the main road, while less scenic, is much more straightforward.

We had a wonderful few days at Galley head. The Lighthouse is gorgeous, the beams shine through the house at night (if you want to leave your shutters open!) and during the day there are fabulous sea views, especially from the kitchen. The caretaker Gerald,a lightkeeper himself and who used to live there, was a mine of interesting information and was able to bring us up the lighthouse itself which was amazing. The house was very comfortable ,bright and warm and spotlessly clean. It's a great area to explore too-nice beaches, forest walks by the amazing Castle Freke and good restaurants in nearby Rosscarbery. We would highly recommend it for a memorable holiday.

Galley Head cottages are obviously unparalleled for unique location, stunning panorama
The Keeper's cottage has great character, imbued with a sense of history and the lives of the Light Keepers. It has been furnished comfortably with sensitivity to its identity, though a little more light for reading would be appreciated!
The most important aspect, one which gave our visit most impact, was the involvement of Gerry Butler. To learn that the present care taker actually lived in the Lighthouse brought the story of Galley Head from the level of fantasy into reality for us, his book shed more light on the experience of the light Keepers and really brought home to us the admiration due to those who braved isolation, uncertainty and stark living conditions to ensure safety for those at sea.
We will remember especially the ghostly silent sweep of the Light at night, conjuring images of seafarers at risk, depending on the five flares of Galley Head.
Many thanks to all involved in making this experience possible.

Went to galley light keeper house 2 on 3 rd January for 4 nights .
The manager of the house Gerard butler met us there an absolute gent with plenty of local knowledge and history . The houses are old and in great condition warm with everything in them . A beautiful scenic area were you can watch the weather change so quickly . My son who has special needs loved the light house and the
Security of the road up to it. There are two gates up to be locked each time you enter . If you want peace and quiet and a great location near clonakilty which has a model railway this is the place to go . Would I go again certainly. Great break after christmas .

I booked a weekend in Galley House to celebrate a special occasion, my cousin's birthday. She has a great passion for lighthouses, so this was going to be a great experience. Despite the high expectation, the weekend we spent in Galley went above and beyond. The house was spotless and very comfortable. The location, even if a bit remote, was amazing and the place had a special energy.
Last but not least, Gerard Butler made the rest. He shared all his passion from generations with his knowledge and personal stories. He gave us a tour of the lighthouse and made us feel extremely welcome. He also gave us precious tips on how to plan our days and visit the beautiful area.

I will definitely go back and suggest to any person who loves quiet, peace and lighthouse in front of the beautiful ocean to experience it!

We stayed in 7 places this trip and the Lighthouse was my favorite. The accommodations were very comfortable and beautiful and being at the lighthouse grounds was very special. Galley Head 2 is a wonderful get away from it all holiday home. The views are just spectacular and we were very lucky with the weather, although my mother-in law was hoping for a stormy day. The house itself is comfortable, warm and we had not problem sleeping. A big thanks to Gerry Butler who enhanced our stay by meeting us on arrival and giving us brief history of the lighthouse.
All in all Galley Head is almost a spiritual place where you can leave the worries of the normal world behind at least for a short while.

One minor criticism is the road leading up to the Lighthouse has some major potholes and really could do with being repaired.

We stayed for 1 night in the Galley Lighthouse in Clonakilty and it is, quite simply, a magical place. The location is breathtaking and the accommodation very comfortable and absolutely spotless. The Landmark Trust's renovations of this house are - as you would expect - sensitive and evocative. Our visit was made even more special by our charming host Gerry who gave us a tour of both the lighthouse itself where he worked for many years and the adjoining house, which had been his childhood home. On the night we stayed the planets aligned and we were treated to a crystal clear night sky with the whole of the Milky Way on view. With the the 5 bright beams of lighthouse punctuating the sparkling sky, it made for a spectacular display. Highly recommended.

Probably the cleanest self-catering accommodation we have ever stayed in. We had a very nice, quiet week of rest. It was a good base for exploring Co Cork and the small towns nearby. Lovely countryside. Despite the excellent viewing opportunities from the house we did not see any whales or dolphins.

This property is captivating, on cliffs overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. The property is surrounded by pastures with cows grazing. It is only about 20 minutes drive from the charming West Cork town of Clonakilty. The house manager is a former lightkeeper who can share the fascinating history of the lighthouse and others around the Republic of Ireland, which are now all automated but still operating. My stay was one of the most memorable experiences I've had in my travels.

As anticipated, this was the highlight of our time in Ireland. Staying at a lighthouse has been on our 'To Do List' for some time and Galley Head did not disappoint. No better view of the coast in Clonikilty! Meeting Gerry the lighthouse keeper made our stay even better and the view from the lighthouse is amazing. He really made the site come alive with history and relevance. Only comment is that the showers do not seem to have any pressure; maybe we were not using them correctly. All in all, a great spot to stay; and if you are a lighthouse fan then Galley Head should be on your destination list!
Thank you for providing us the opportunity to appreciate this gem.

From my initial phone enquiry to the Landmark Trust to the booking of the lighthouse my experience has been very positive.

My contact with Gerald Butler contributed greatly to our enjoyment of the lighthouse. His family story, his sense of social history and his willingness to share his memories and knowledge were really appreciated by us all.

We fell in love with the house and enjoyed the space and comfort therein. I particularly liked the fact that the kitchen was very well equipped. If you like to cook this certainly was an added bonus. Our visit was short and I would love to return especially to take time out and read and enjoy this unique experience.

It think it would be useful to mention in the documentation to bring a set of binoculars. I particularly liked to watch the flight of the gulls and seabirds.

Well done on preserving this and your other properties and I look forward to a return visit to Galley Head 2 and visiting some other properties in the future.

Kind regards, Susan

Visited here as surprise for my Dad's birthday. It is a break from the usual weekend away trip you could have, No TV,Wi Fi or even a Radio signal and limited mobile phone coverage. An awesome view of the West Cork coastline awaits you and breathtaking views of the rugged Countryside. Lighthouse coming to light another highlight and going to bed with it shining in the window a highlight, On our final morning we got a tour of the Lighthouse from Gerald Butler whose family is steeped in the history of Galley Head, it was the highlight for me a Gerald has a passion for his profession and the local areas history.

If you want to try something different, then rent one of the unique and wonderful properties owned by the Irish Landmark Trust! We rented both Galley Head Lightkeeper's Houses 1 & 2 and it was perfect alternative to staying in large cities such as Dublin and Cork.
It's Isolated out on a point with no one seemingly around for miles and yet we found it to be spacious, warm, comfortable and the place we looked forward to returning to each day.
The rugged location and views of the coast are incredible. The rooms are spacious and the kitchens are stocked enough for you to cook your own meals if you want to.
The caretaker, Gerald, was wonderful to work with and gave us a fascinating private tour of the working lighthouse. He also recommended meals at Dunmore Hotel, a lovely property we would never have found on our own. If you really want to feel like a local, stop into nearby O'Donohue's Pub; there won't be another tourist in the place! It's signposted about 1.5 miles away. Bear in mind that you are miles away from a store so you need to shop beforehand. We were 3 couples renting both houses.
All in all, if you are looking for a unique experience, that most people will never do or even hear about, book a stay at this property.

The Lighthouse is a property of the Irish Landmark Trust (ILT). We booked it through their website with no difficulties. The text says that there is a minimum 3 night stay but I put in for 2 nights and it was accepted. The text also says that they are very strict about the number of people in the party. We were 4 adults and a child. Each unit is denoted as sleeping 4 and the ILT office in Dublin insisted that we couldn't have a 5th person even if a child. That turned out for the best anyway as by renting both units we had the entire facility to ourselves. I can't imagine sharing that experience with strangers.

The e-mailed documentation from the ILT was comprehensive and accurate. Payment is via credit card over the web in advance. There are separate managers for each unit. You are required to contact the respective manager 4 days before arrival to arrange for checkin. e-mail and phone numbers were provided. I e-mailed them and both promptly responded. Both had the surname of Butler but the contact information was different.

When I heard back from them, Ger Butler, the manager for Unit 2, responded that he would handle the checkin for both units and to just call him when we arrived in Clonakilty. We were 15 minutes later than we expected but he was there to welcome us.

It turns out that the other manager is Ger's sister-in-law so combining the checkin was no problem. Ger just lives about 5 minutes away.

My son-in-law's family is from Galley Head not 2 miles from the lighthouse so Ger was familiar with the family. As Ger said, we had "connections." We spent 30 minutes visiting with Ger and his partner Marie after we arrived.

Ger has a special connection to the lighthouse. His father was the lightkeeper and Ger and his 14 siblings grew up there! He said that as they slept 4 to the bed, cold was never a problem. I asked him which room had been his and he said he had slept everywhere.

At that time the structure was divided into several areas. The westernmost room is now the kitchen for Unit 2. Previously it was an oil room. The breakfast table in this kitchen has the best view in the houses. The 2 units were separated and the principal lightkeeper lived in what is now Unit 2 and the assistant lived in Unit 1. When Ger's father was promoted, they had to move from Unit 1 to Unit 2. Eventually with automation there was only one lightkeeper and there was a door cut between the units and his family had access to both units.

There is an enclosed corridor from the houses to the lighthouse. Today it has the electronics for the cellular towers. When we asked Ger what it had been used for previously he said that it provided a protected walkway from the houses to the lighthouse for safety in the winter winds. He showed us the worn marks on the stair posts where they wedged a board to keep the door from being blown open by the winter winds. He ought to write a book.

Each unit has 2 bedrooms, one with a double bed and the other with 2 twins. Each unit has a large den and a large kitchen. Unit 1's kitchen is slightly bigger and has a larger breakfast table. Both have complete appliances including oven, stove, small refrigerator/freezer, dishwasher, microwave, cooking utensils and china and flatware. Ger said there was a washer and dryer in a house outside but we didn't use these.

The feeling of the interior is like a newly refinished farm house filled with antique furniture and games for the whole family. The floors are wide boards and freshly painted. I had read on the Internet other visitors' stories about having to learn how to operate the heating. During our visit the heating was by radiator and programmed automatically. We never had to operate or change the heating.

Don't worry about the light from the lighthouse keeping you awake. There are heavy solid shutters on every window. But the beam of light is substantially above the house so the light is not a problem.

I had also read that there was no cellular service at the lighthouse. That demonstrates the construction of the structure. There are numerous cell towers nearby including several ON the lighthouse proper. The problem with cellular service is that the outside walls of the structure are 30" thick effectively blocking the cellular signals when inside. Even if you stand at a window you need to try several windows to get one that has exposure to the cellular carrier you need to use. Standing by the window in the bathroom on the north side of Unit 1 I only got EDGE signal and actually couldn't make a phone call. I walked out of the bathroom and stood by the window at the top of the stairs facing south towards the lighthouse and got HSPA+.

Similarly the inside walls block Wi-Fi signal. I had rented a Vodafone hotspot from Hertz. Even when I placed it near a window where it could see the appropriate cellular tower the Wi-Fi signal wouldn't penetrate the house. It was in Unit 2's foyer and I couldn't see it from Unit 1's bedroom.

Remember that the units are "self catering" and come prepared. Assume that you need to bring everything. We rented both units and found 1 hair dryer in Unit 2. We went into Clonakilty and grocery shopped. Ross Carberry is about the same distance. Beware that the roads are NARROW. On the road up to the lighthouse ignore the "Private Property" sign. There are 2 locked gates that the keys to the units will open. Be sure to lock them behind you to keep out the sightseers. Even with them locked we had a group of tourists walk up. They weren't any trouble and I didn't blame them for seeking that view.

The drive into either Clonakilty or Ross Carberry is about 10 miles of mostly one lane roads. The last mile into the lighthouse is full of potholes. I found a GPS indispensable although it generated different routes going into Clonakilty as opposed to coming from Clonakilty to the lighthouse.

Be sure and let Ger share his incredible knowledge about the history and operation of the Galley Head lighthouse and the other lighthouses in the area. That won't take much prodding. Ger himself worked for the Commission of Irish Lights for 21 years.

I had seen information on the Internet that said that the Galley Head lighthouse was going to be turned off. Ger said that that wasn't true. At some point in the future it will be converted to an LED light source. This will greatly simplify the operation as the LEDs won't have to rotate, just blink. When I asked him when this would happen he said that it would happen when he ran out of bulbs! He said he had 6 spares now. He said that due to the fees from the cellular towers that the lighthouse is actually a money maker.

The light on Galley Head blinks 5 times every 20 seconds. It is painted white with a black ring just under the lights. This is the signature of the Galley Head lighthouse. The black ring was added some years ago to hide the discoloration running down from the catwalk around the lights. When this was done the Commission of Irish Lights had to notify all seamen.

Red Strand beach is about 2 miles away and was good for an afternoon of splashing. At the end of May it was too cold to get in the water.

We had pizza in Richey's in Clonakilty as recommended by Marie. We had lunch in the Celtic Ross Hotel in Ross Carberry. We had dinner in O'Donovan's Hotel in Clonakilty. The dining room hadn't opened for the summer so we ate in the bar. Don't confuse O'Donovan's Hotel in Clonakilty with O'Donovan's Fisher Cross bar near the lighthouse. Dennis O'Donovan doesn't serve pub grub in his bar but his Guinnesses are wonderful.

The house is surrounded by a cliff wall that varies in height from 4-6 ft. with flowers growing in the cracks. Beyond this wall is an amazing view of the northern Atlantic. The grass is green. The rocks are black. The sea is blue. The sea gulls are white. Incredible! Dolphins, whales and seals are reportedly often seen in the waters but we didn't see any. Within easy walking distance are pastures of sheep and ancient ruins. A perfect place for "exploring" as my granddaughter calls it. This is a place to escape from the real world.

On our first visit to Ireland we just visited Galley Head. On this trip we stayed there for 2 nights. On our next trip to Ireland this will be our destination spot. We just need to plan it for while Ger Butler is still managing it.

Galley Head Lighthouse is incredibly beautiful- lots of crashing waves, sea views, quiet, no TV or Internet, lovely drives nearby and wonderful places to eat too. Perfect for couples or families. The Butler family who look after it are amazing, very friendly and helpful with a great store of family history connected to the lighthouse.

We had a marvellous experience at Galley Head from start to finish. The beautiful location and all that goes with it makes it very easy to relax and to feel a small part of what life was like in previous years. Gerald and Marie were extremely friendly, courteous, professional , informative and all things good. They alone are a great advertisement for West Cork tourism. We had a great stay here and hope to return.

another wonderful break in a landmark property. Galley Head is in such a stunning location. The seascape and surrounding landscape are magnificent. What adds to the whole experience is the property managers. Ger and Meria have such a pride in the property (Ger lived there as a child) and can provide you with lots of 'insider' information on the property and its history - and indeed marine information in general. We are privileged to have Landmark Trust to preserve these gems for us to enjoy.

We enjoyed our stay immensely. Galley Light was a thrill and the night sky was brilliant.
If I had to complain about anything it would be the stove. It kept shutting off while cooking. Not a huge issue but a little annoying.
What I also noticed was a little paint could go a long way. As you approach ,the back wall and also the front of the main house could use a coat or two. We plan on staying again, and will recommend to others.
Thank you.

An amazing stay in a spectacular location. Breathtaking views from the kitchen! Snuggling up in front of the open fire and looking out the window at the lighthouse while listening to the wind howling... We didn't want to leave! We'll definitely be back.

Last minute get away and it was worth every moment. The stunning setting was breathtaking ... literally when walking along the coastline! Extremely well taken care of from booking to arrival on site and throughout the weekend. Wonderful stories of the lighthouse in days gone by just set the scene for a wonderful cosy weekend in front of the fire whilst the sound of the waves crashing against the cliffs echoed in the background. The lack of contact from the outside world was just a gift.

My experience of staying at Galleyhead lighthouse was amazing from start to finish. The house is spotless clean, warm cosy and very well equiped. Gerard(light keeper/house manager) could not have been more helpful or friendly. The views were out of this world, its so remote, relaxing and a great get away from life stress. This place is a must see for everyone and i would highly recommend a stay at Galleyhead.

We spent a most enjoyable 2 nights at Galley Head #2 in late September. We were blessed with beautiful weather! The setting is quite magical, I found we couldn't stay in bed in the mornings as we just had to get up and out and enjoy the view! The house and kitchen is very well equipped with everything you need and was very clean. For our second night we also had Galley Head #1 so we had the full place to ourselves, This was an ideal scenario as we had the interconnecting doors opened. It is a little unusual that both cottages are managed by different caretakers so you must deal with different people to make arrival arrangements / keys etc. It was a little bit of a nuisance to have to open and lock the 2 separate gates as people arrived and departed but it did ensure you had complete privacy. We had children in the group and they absolutely loved the experience and it was also very safe with walled in gardens. Overall I would highly recommend a stay here and I would go back. I would recommend brining binoculars to keep and eye on the boat and wildlife activities - there is hours of entertainment there! I did find the booking process a little daunting and inflexible with a long list of strict rules on payment and cancellation charges (full payment for the stay including security deposit and all utility charges must be paid 8 weeks in advance which is unusual and did make me a bit nervous but it all worked out ok!). The houses are kind of mirror images but the kitchen set up is probably the main difference- house #2 has a relatively small kitchen that is very well equipped that seats 4 people with a lovely view out to sea. House #1 has a much bigger kitchen that can accommodate 8 people comfortably but the kitchen was less well supplied with cutlery etc.

Beautifully presented old lightkeepers house. Restored, comfortable and warm, while keeping the atmosphere of a historic landmark. Simple, tasteful and comfortable facilities and decor, and as one would expect from a lighthouse... panoramic sea views. We woke up to a spectacular sunrise and prepared dinner watching the sunset from the kitchen. If staying just a couple of nights, as we did, I recommend bringing everything you need for 2 days and staying put.

The only issue that may need addressing is the water pressure in both of the showers. A water pump may need to be installed to allow for a normal shower. Currently it is like washing under a dripping tap. Otherwise the property is well maintained, clean and an experience of high standard.

Perfect organisation (description of the route, phone numbers...) and nice contact before we arrived. We got a very warm welcome, all our questions were answered and we even were shown the lighthouse. Perfect location to spend some quiet, relaxed days, very comfortable and cosy. The views from the rooms are stunning, as is the whole location. We will recommend Galley head to our friends and family.

This is The best stay we had in Ireland. Gerald Butler and his wife gave us a very warm welcome. The accommodation is grande. The finishing is Laura Ashley style from the 1900s. The building is unique in its architecture and the light in the rooms from the many large windows gives it a special atmosphere. Whoever likes to rest with a 270° Panoramic see you on the rock with 70 year old thick grass land on top and the lighthouse would love to stay here. Clonakilty is within good reach.
As soon as we spoke to Gerald Butler, this place truly became special to us. Top-notch secret place of the true Ireland!

Having stayed in many UK Landmarks over 30 years (and two in Italy) this was our first Irish Landmark, and well up with the rest. Talking to Gerry and Marie was very informative. We visited the old flour mill near Clonakilty where my ancestors lived in Victorian times, and went to the Horse Fair in Rosscarbery. Weather very Irish as expected.

Staying at the Galley Head Lightkeeper's House was a gift. The photos don't do this exquisite property justice. They can't. The sea, the fields, the crashing surf below, the beautiful and well-appointed house--all are too beautiful to be accurately described in words or to be captured in a photograph. Our extended family took over both sides of the house, Galley Head 1 and Galley Head 2, which would have very comfortably slept eight people. Each side of the house, connected through a door, would serve as the ideal place for a family of four to stay. The property, which served as a perfect launching point for day trips around Cork County and the eastern part of Kerry County, was a terrific place to both begin and end the day. Our hosts, who know the property and area well, were kind, gracious, and welcoming. Both the place and the people made this a visit we'll never forget.

It was absolutely gorgeous. If you love historic architecture this is a wonderful experience. They have maintained the historic fabric of the building to the point that you can experience what it must have been like to live there a hundred years ago. I personally loved that the beams from the light house shine into your room at night - very magical. I am very upset at the thought of them discontinuing the traditional light house luminations. Gerald and Marie are delightful and gave us such an insightful tour of the lighthouse it was very hard to leave. Gerald is able to answer every question so thoroughly you could talk to him all day. I know that I have to go back just to hear about his Fastnet experience. We are definitely planning a return visit - next time we will stay longer.

An excellent property in stunning surroundings. If there is one place on earth to sit back and relax its this amazing location and property. It had no TV inside the property, but the Irish sea is your TV. Endless channels to was fascinating content and all watch able again and again

We were 8 friends visiting so we hired the two Lighthouses and having access through to both houses made a huge difference as the weather was not good. House 2 is more comfortable and much more pleasant and I would strongly recommend that you review the furniture and comfort level of the sitting room in Lighthouse 1 - I would have been very disappointed if we had House 1 only. We used the kitchen in house 1 and the sitting room in house 2 so it worked well for us because we had both houses.
The cooking rings in both houses are awful and they really need to be updated without delay - it was so frustrating trying to cook on them. Apparently according to reviews this has been mentioned previously by other visitors but nothing has been done to replace them.
Otherwise everything was fine and Gerard was extremely helpful and accommodating in every way. I left my phone after me and he was so helpful about getting it back to me which I appreciated very much indeed.
It would be a nice touch if you could leave some firewood and spare toilet paper - we ran out of toilet paper and had to go buy some - it is a small thing but means a lot with the distances involved. Briquettes were provided but some wood would be great too. When we were in Loop Head we did get enough wood for one evening's fire.
We appreciate the work that the Land mark Trust does and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and will return to other properties again in the near future.
Thank you to all and especially to Gerard. We did not meet the lady who looks after house number 1.

We were extremely impressed with the level of cleanliness and facilities. Gerald is a lovely personable and enthusiastic man and it was great to have his perspective on the lighthouse and growing up there. The location is fantastic, the views are incredible….what more can I say. We will be back.

This was one of the best weekends I had in a long time. Well worth the long journey to get there. The caretakers Gerald and Marie were very accommodating about our arrival time and extremely welcoming. The house was so warm and cosy despite the wild weather conditions. Everything was completely spotless and all furniture, etc. were in great condition. Very good quality delph, cutlery and cookware in the kitchen. The open fire had been laid and we just had to light it. The location is stunning and I enjoyed a 4 hour hike from the house through woodland, beach and roadside paths. Gerald gave us a tour of the lighthouse on the day we left and was fascinating as he had been a light keeper himself as had both his parents and both grandfathers. Beautiful location, very comfortable, tastefully decorated house. Great for a weekend with a group of friends.

We loved it, its our second time staying and hope to go down again. A lot of money was invested in the property since our 1st visit 6 years ago. Great place to get away from everything for a few days. Would recommend 100%

Excellent location and property, views are undescribable, Gerald and his the property managers made our stay incerdible. If you stay at the galley head you need to (stay at the galley head) to enjoy the property and views. Excellent walks and exploring. Going to bed at night with the light shining in the bedroom windows put you to sleep like a baby. If you are lucky like we where there might be storm and you really get what is like to be a light house keeper. My son and girl friend stayed with my wife and I, there was ample room and the facilty were way above average especially with the 2 bathrooms. This is a real gem and not to be overlooked if you want a "REAL" holiday in Ireland. The only bad thing was the 40 min walk to O'Sullivans the bar or should I say the walk back.
What treat

Best holiday is stay in the lighthouses for me. Galley Head is one from most amazing places in the world.
Very nice Lighthouse, nature, cliffs. And wonderful Ireland - with peoples, history, culture.
