Once one of a number of bothies stretching along this quiet country lane, Killee Cottage is one of only two thatched cottages remaining. The boundary of this property ends at a small stream and there is a large garden with endless views stretching over the neighbouring fields.

  • Sleeps 2 people. Double Room.
  • Welcomes 1 pet.

A lovely place to stay.

After traveling for two weeks along the spectacular west coast of Ireland, busily seeing the sights and taking in all the natural beauty, we needed a place to settle down for a while. Kille Cottage was the perfect place to rest! Located in the middle of Irish dairy country with lovely green pastures with thousands of dairy cows peacefully grazing, with nary a tourist bus, the only sound you hear is an occasional moo! Even though Killee Cottage is located along a quiet country road, it is only 6 kms from the bustling town of Mitchelstown, with a variety of grocery stores, local library and great restaurants. We stayed at Killee Cottage for 10 nights and could have stayed 10 more!

We had a very relaxing stay in Killee Cottage. The cottage is lovely, comfortable and well equipped. We particularly enjoyed the peace and quiet to read and unwind. We were warmly welcomed by Theresa who shared lots of interesting and useful information about the history of the cottage and the area. Throughout our stay Theresa couldn't have been kinder and more helpful. A wonderful host and a lovely cottage!

Thank you for your great review. Theresa is a brilliant House Manager and an asset for Irish Landmark and all her guests.

A little piece of heaven really.

Thank you for your lovely review. The restoration on this cottage is very interesting with the removal of all the internal walls that had been added over the years. This is a very welcoming and relaxing cottage.

Killee Cottage is quaint and beautifully restored. It is isolated, but the road is frequented by fast traffic, so no opportunity to walk in peace.
The kitchen facilities are more than adequate. The house is spotless and the shower is great.
The dining chairs match the cottage, but are uncomfortable.
The lack of phone signal was annoying.
The disgusting smell of slurry on each of of four days meant we couldn't sit outside or open the windows. Don't know if this is a seasonal activity and we were just unlucky, or if there is a slurry pit nearby.
We could see lots of birds in the back garden making full use of the biodiversity area. Lots of interesting places to visit nearby. The Blueway from Cahir to Swiss Cottage is exceptional.

Thank you for your review. Unfortunately, we cannot change or improve the location of the cottage which sits close to a country road, it has sat there for many, many years, this is explained on our website. Good connection is a modern luxury our rural old houses do not cope well with and the old thick walls also hinder. This is why we promote a digital detox at our country properties, to enjoy spending time with your house partner and exploring beautiful Cork. It seems the local farmers have been fertilising the surrounding fields, I'm sorry this has affected any quality time outside, unfortunately this is a farming process we cannot control and is part of country living.

Our first ever stay in an ILT property - everything was as we expected - spotlessly clean, cosy and very comfortable - we loved the area - so much to see and do - then relax in the garden after a busy day!

Thank you to Theresa

The cottage was small but perfect. Theresa the house manager was so friendly and helpful. The cottage was really well equipped, it even had a small dishwasher, as well as a washing machine and tumble dryer. It was beautifully decorated and had a gorgeous stove. There were even hot water bottles!! We have stayed in a number of Landmark Trust properties and they are always fabulous, this one was no exception. There was a lovely back garden, but unfortunately the weather didn't lend itself to eating outdoors on our visit. I would highly recommend a visit.

Thank you for your great review and scores. This is the most amazing cottage internally and externally with the brooke running to the side, and a great holiday for a dog too as its all on one floor. We absolutely love this cottage, very private and just what you would expect of a thatched cottage.

We stayed here for four night in very mixed weather at Easter time. The cottage will be ideal during bright sunny weather when the large garden can be enjoyed, and the sunlight shines through the small windows. However, in the dull and gloomy weather we experienced, the interior lighting is not good, and makes staying indoors to read, etc., a poor experience. A couple of bright reading lamps will improve the place no end.

The cottage is on a rural road about ten minutes drive from Mitchelstown. Some heavy farm traffic passes occasionally during the daytime. Otherwise it is in a haven of tranquility. Landmark Trust Ireland have carried out their usual impressive work on the cottage with a very good well equipped kitchen area and bathroom. The central heating is excellent. Theresa, the LTI manager, met us on time and is very nice and helpful.

Lorraine - Operations Manager replied 254 days ago
Thank you for your review. Your score of 3 is a bit concerning for comfort as this propery was our last conservation property and was very well fitted out and flew through its last inspection from both Failte Ireland and myself. I will look into the lighting but as you mentioned the cottage windows are traditionally small, we do have lamps placed in the functioning areas, this is just the nature of an old property on darker days unfortunately.

This was my fourth stay at an Irish Landmark Trust property. We had a warm welcome from Theresa at the cottage. As she had promised, the bed is very comfortable and the bedroom is lovely and cosy. The kitchen, despite its small size, is very well equipped for anything you might consider cooking or roasting and the neat little dishwasher is a great help. The backdoor of the cottage opens onto a meadow garden with picnic table. The cottage is on the road, but once inside you are not aware of passing cars. The shower has good pressure.

I felt some details were a little different to previous stays with ILT. In other properties, I remember an Avoca throw on the sofa and an Avoca cookbook which I thought was a good way to promote Irish business and design (Avoca is now owned by Aramark). In Killee, there was a thin Dunnes throw on the sofa. A couple of the pots were a little worse for wear and while the house manager had left a great amount of wood for the fire, the brush and tongs set was in pieces. I even noticed that the curtains in the kitchen didn't quite fit. These are really minor niggles but they detracted from what I expect at an ILT property.

In terms of location, the property has a folder of places to visit locally. I don't know this part of Cork very well but I found that we were well placed to visit Cork, Limerick and Tipperary. It is only a 10 minute drive to Mitchelstown where there is a Supervalu, Tesco Extra and a Lidl. As it is quite centrally located in Munster, it would make a good base for a longer stay (although you might struggle with a lot of luggage- you could keep large cases with the washing machine and dryer).

Lorraine - Operations Manager replied 296 days ago
Thank you for your review, Killee is a lovely rural cottage that has some lovely nearby places to go, walking would be popular with our guests in this location. We did have a collaboration with Avoca years ago, this is no longer in place. The companion set brush only, is looking worse for wear, and will be resolved. The rest of the set is in very good condition, we try to be sustainable and repair rather than disgard items in our property inventory. I do have a list of replacement items for Killee that will be in place within the next few months. As a charity we have 32 properties to maintain, they are inspected annually for wear and tear, this property scored highly on the last inspection but I have noted your comments.

This charming wee cottage was a welcome get away for us. There is no TV and no wifi, and there was no internet phone access, which meant it was a true escape, in beautiful lush north county Cork!
The dishwasher was a welcome bonus, which was not expected in a small comfortable kitchen.
The decor lends itself well to utter relaxation. It is very well chosen, and fits the cottage perfectly. The cottage is compact, really comfortable, totally cosy! The wood burner ensured it was cosy!
We will definitely be back!

We had a great stay in the cottage with our labrador! Very quiet and cottage was well equipped. Large enclosed back garden for doggie to sniff about. Mitchelstown a short drive away for shopping. Several woodland walks and scenic strolls in the area too. Doneraile Park is a lovely spot for a casual stroll and outdoor tea.

A beautiful little cottage, cozy and comfortable. Despite its old world charm it is equipped with modern facilities such as a microwave and dishwasher. Ideal whether you want to just relax or if you want to explore the area. Theresa is an excellent house manager, a font of knowledge on the local area. She also keeps the cottage to a very high standard of cleanliness and maintenance. The window boxes were a lovely touch.

Thank you for your lovely review. This beautiful thatched cottage has amazing renovation history, the photographs of the renovations to this cottage is amazing, they show how Irish Landmark Trust turned this cottage back to its original layout, and uncovering the old fireplace as it would have been when the cottage was first built. The small brook has been cleared at the side of the cottage and we have great feedback about the wildlife that can now be seen.

What an idyllic place to spend a long weekend. The cottage is beautifully restored and maintained. Quiet, away from everything but the birds and occasional car/tractor passing. The cottage is well appointed with a great shower, comfy bed, and all the mod cons (except internet but that's not a bad thing!). It suffers from being a bit isolated and needing the car to get everywhere but that's rural Ireland and I wouldn't sacrifice the peace for convenience anyway.

This is a lovely peaceful cottage, beautifully restored with great attention to detail. In the heart of the north Cork countryside it is a great place to relax with lots of birdsong (in early May) and a rabbit that often ventured very close our back door - saw more in nearby fields on an early morning walk!
I would happily recommend this place and well done to Irish Landmark Trust for their preservation work. I look forward to visiting Killee cottage again and based on our experience we will certainly check out other ILT properties for future breaks.

Brilliant job on historic old cottage, our second stay there. Many thanks to Theresa. Great base to explore the area. We went to Doneraile Court, Anne's Grove Gardens, Lough Gur, Grange stone circle, Kilmallock..Abbey and Church, Museum of Irish Ways. Mitchelstown is also worth a walk around and close by for all supermarket needs. Lots more to do and see.. as I mentioned it was a return visit. Then you come home to the cosiest cottage, light the fire and put the feet ..or sit outside listen to the birdsong and watch the rabbits. We had a fabulous stay. Highly recommended.

Our 6th stay in ILT property. Stayed for four nights with our little dog. We had the warmest welcome I have ever had from Teresa the house manager. She was so lovely and even brought us flowers from her garden. Cottage was cosy, we lit the fire every night as it rained almost continuously for the four days- but that’s Ireland in March! We visited Doneraile, Kinsale and Youghal.

We were met by our wonderful, friendly and informative host when we arrived. The house was spotlessly clean and the wood burning stove ready to be lit. The bed was really comfortable and we had a lovely nights sleep. We had out German Shepherd with us, who absolutely loved the back garden and spent ages chasing his ball. The bathroom was modern with a lovely walk in shower and fresh towels were provided. There was tea, coffee, local guides all the things that were needed in the kitchen, all we had to do was light the fire, enjoy the lack of tv, Wi-Fi and other distractions, which was just delightful. We have stuff with the National Trust before and had a wonderful time and look forward to staying with them again.

What a lovely cottage! Beautifully maintained and well loved. Deidre, the host/custodian for Landmark Trust gave us a lovely welcome and is an added bonus to the property.

The thatched cottage is lovely, very well equipped and nicely restored. The bed is super comfortable, like all in Landmark Trust houses,. It is quite isolated, down a country road, without neighbours anyway close, so wonderful for star watching in the dark at night, but the nearest store is back in Mitchelstown if you run out of milk! Mitchelstown has sadly seen better days, has several grocery shops for food shopping, but Fermoy, a 15 minute drive away, is far far prettier for lunch or a Sunday morning walk by the river.

Killee cottage is a very comfortable beautifully restored cottage. Very welcoming house manager. Excellent place to stay and a great addition to Landmark Trust’s portfolio. Very easy to find - it is not far from Mitchelstown. Only problem was poor or non existent phone signal and of course no wifi. This is a problem post Covid as opening hours for cafes and even OPW sites nearby are not as one would expect. Online checking is really essential.
It would be nice if some of the rear space beyond the picnic bench was either cut or better still was a meadow rather than unsightly weeds. A small point as this really is a lovely cottage .

Thank you for your review and supporting the Irish Landmark Trust. Thank you for your mention of checking out the locality before hand, this is also information your local House Manager can provide to you before or during your check-in. Due to the remoteness of location of our properties and the very thick walls, it is advised to take a tech free break too during your visit

Killee Cottage is a beautiful property and we had a lovely stay there! It is very clean and well-appointed. The kitchen especially was very well supplied with pots, pans, utensils, and everything else we needed. There were plenty of electrical outlets around. The bathroom was also very nice and spacious with plenty of hot water. Despite all of these modern conveniences, the property maintains a wonderful historic character. We took advantage of the wood-burning stove to have fires (with the supplies left for us) almost every night. And we loved having our meals at the picnic table out back, where a field of wildflowers and grasses is taking shape. It was a quiet, tranquil place to unplug for a few nights. The host, Deirdre, was wonderful and helpful and gave us great recommendations for restaurants and activities nearby. This is our second stay in an ILT property, and we plan to stay in many more!

Very attractive cottage with usual Landmark Trust's successful blend of historic fabric and practical modern amenities. Tranquil rural setting but we did have to watch out for speeding traffic early morning and late afternoon; plus it was haymaking time!
Garden behind at time of visit was a beautiful floral meadow; hope the Trust resists the temptation to manicure it.
Warm and very helpful welcome by Diedre.
Only minor problem for us was lack of good reading light in living room.
Otherwise thoroughly recommended.

This is a very cozy cottage in Cork county, The wood burning stove was perfect for the cool nights. Very peaceful for sleeping. Kitchenette has everything you need, and there is a picnic table out back which was surrounded by buttercups when I was there. Enjoyed long walks along narrow winding country roads. About 6km outside of Mitchelstown so a car is advised, but there is a Local Links bus from Mitchelstown to Fermoy every 2 hours during the daytime, about 5-10 min walk from the cottage.

It was a great stay. The cottage is very sympathetically refurbished. I loved the decor, the heritage colours used were lovely, especially the bedroom. The shower in the bathroom was second to none. I am originally from the Cork area, so the cottage was really convenient for seeing family. Will visit again.

We had a wonderful, restorative stay in this cosy hideaway. Lots of long walks in the Galtee mountains and the nearby Doneraile estate. We would highly recommend Killee cottage for a breakaway from the business of life!

Deidre was an attentive and friendly host. She made it a point of stopping by and providing a guest gift of soda bread, which we appreciated. The fire was ready to go, requiring only a lighted match, and the narcissus planter brightened the decor and provided a lovely harbinger of spring for our March stay. Deidre checked in on us regularly even though, she held two other jobs, and allowed us a more generous check out time.

Other guests might want to bring shampoo and bar soap should they prefer those to liquid soap and additional firewood or turf if they plan to use the stove more than one night. The cottage could also use a few board games. Like many other Irish Landmark properties, we found the normal allotment of heat less than generous. Fortunately, we were able to adjust the system to a more suitable schedule.

Lovely cottage and sympathetically restored by ILT , great to have thatch cottage on their books close to mitchelstown by car (approximately 15 minutes). Lovely stove , the only thing is not great phone signal most of the time.

Lovely comfortable well equipped traditional thatched Irish cottage...we stayed for 3 nights and used it as a base to travel around ..Killee Cottage was spacious and had everything we needed...Deirdre left us a welcome card and a little vase of flowers ...nice touch...she also gave us some suggestions for places to visit and Donerail House and Gardens was spot on. Thank you Deirdre

We really enjoyed our stay. The cottage was lovely and very comfortable and it was really good to be able to unplug for a few days with no TV of WiFi.
Our peace and quiet was only disturbed by the big lorries going by the cottage at speed.
Deirdre was most helpful and gave us a list of all the interesting places to visit.

We were so happy with our stay in the cottage . The surroundings and quiet suited us down to the ground . We both work within computer driven roles , so to completely switch off and have no phone signal was a detox for us. Will be back again when the gardens get developed.
Park your car facing the road as traffic goes fast on it.

I know the lack of internet and the poor phone connection was a bit off putting but that was ok. It didn't affect us too much. We brought our own laptop on which we had downloaded some videos.
