Thank you for your great review, this cosy cottage with open fire is perfect for the colder days, even though it has underfloor heating, the fire is perfect to sit in front of with a book, or while listening to the radio after a day of exploring lovely Donegal.

Cosy clean cottage with a very comfortable bed that retains its original charm. I enjoyed the open fire while listening to the radio. It is very peaceful without being too remote, the Rossylongan woods nearby are handy for dog walks.

We found the railway cottage cosy and secluded with nice walks in the immediate vicinity. We brought our dog and he loved his holiday too. We all loved the underfloor heating! We found the location ideal for exploring south Donegal as the cottage is so close to Donegal town and to the main road leading to Killybegs, Sliabh Liag and Ardara.
Thanks for everything!

This cottage is perfect for one or two people. Very cozy, and set in a beautiful garden, you feel yourself relax as soon as you open the front door. Everything you need is there, but the modern conveniences are cleverly hidden so that the cottage maintains its original character. Tastefully decorated. The caretaker is great with communication and very helpful should you have any questions or concerns during your stay. This cottage is definitely going on my "will be back" list!

The mattress is worn out and should be replaced. There is almost no padding above the springs which can be counted by hand easily. Very uncomfortable especially for elderly. Difficult to sleep on.
A hand held showerhead is not an over-bath shower. It needs to be attached to wall or ceiling. Hard to use and no curtain to help keep the floor etc dry. Suggest you just describe it as a bath and not mention shower. Very disappointing too! The fireside chairs are too low at the back - you can’t rest your head.

Peter from Navan stayed at Railway Crossing Cottage for 3 nights in August 2024

Lorraine - Operations Manager replied 96 days ago
Thank you for your review. I have never had a complaint about the bed before but will check this out on my next visit. The bath has a hand held shower head so guests can rinse hair etc. and is clear on the website and is described as a shower head over the bath and not a shower unit. As an old building, the layout has to be sympathetic to the building and with old properties like this, we are limited to the size of the furniture in the living room. We feel the chairs are in keeping with the property, larger armchairs would not be suitable for the space available. I'm sorry this cottage was not for you, it is one of the smallest 2 person properties we have, but has great significance in the town's history and was a great restoration to save and share with our guests.

Peace & quiet in this beautifully maintained and situated cottage. Near to an array of lovely beaches and a variety of walks, this was everything we had hoped for. A great opportunity to put technology away and give nature a chance. Donegal town a short drive away with an array of shops & dining options, and Killybegs 20 minutes away for fish lovers. We loved it, and hope to return.

A fabulous little cottage located on the out-skirts of Donegal Town. 20 mins walk to the town centre.
The Cottage was attractively furnished and we were made very welcome. Part of the reason for our stay was the ability to bring our dog - the garden was secure and we had no worries for her safety. The locality is quiet and there is a lot to see and do in the area.
I'd highly recommend a stay.

We loved it, that's the short review. We were delayed by some roadworks getting to the cottage, but Gerard was waiting and very understanding. He gave us a tour of the property, the keys, and then left us to ourselves. The place is utterly gorgeous, really as 'away from it all' that it gets. The only bit of tech is a radio, which we loved. Just got to switch off. We brought our dog, and he loved the garden, got to run laps all the time. Donegal town is only 3 mins drive, with plenty of food and drink options. Really not a bad thing to say, loved it and would highly recommend.

We had a lovely stay in the Railway Crossing Cottage. The location is great - it is on a quiet road and lovely and peaceful, but is within walking distance of Donegal town to go out for dinner etc. There is lots of information in the cottage, both about its history and things to do in the area. The bath is lovely for a relaxing soak, and we really enjoyed switching off from TV/ internet etc. Gerard the house manager was really friendly, accommodating and helpful. We would definitely stay here again.

Thank you for your great review. This cottage is so lovely decorated inside, the bath is amazing. I saw deer come into the top of the garden early in the morning, but the minute I twitched the net curtain they knew I was there. Gerard takes great care of this very special cottage and is so easy to deal with.

A spur of the moment decision to get away for Easter led to a booking of the Railway Crossing Cottage. Such a little gem near Donegal Town. The cottage had everything we needed for a two night stay and the house manager had it all ready for our arrival. A lovely base from which to explore the beautiful Donegal. And loads of good hiding spots in the garden for Easter eggs ☺️

Nice clean cottage close to town. Radio was fairly useless and needs updating, possibly one or two more comfortable chairs instead of the bench. Overall very good.

Thank you for your review. There are two comfortable chairs placed beside the bench you mentioned with footstools and throws and would be the preferred use seating for our guests. I can check if this room has the capacity for any additional seating. Our pricing is very competitive for this area, for peak season. As a unique landmark property with large private garden, I'm sorry you feel this was over priced. This is an unusual heritage building with a lovely roll top bath, underfloor heating and lots of character. As a not for profit charity, we keep our prices fair and in line with the market rate, we only cover our costs and future maintenance this old property needs. Gerard the local house manager is happy to look at the room layout to see if there can be a better arrangement. The radio was checked immediately after your stay and was found to be working fine, im sorry you had trouble using it.

Great location and a lovely pet friendly property. The House manager, Gerard explained everything we needed to know from directions to how to work everything in the cottage.
The cottage itself was beautiful, it was small but cosy - plenty of space for 2 people, Kitchen area had an open fireplace which created a lovely atmosphere, the bedroom was small (as expected) and the bathroom had a wonderful roll top bath. The grounds were lovely with a huge back garden which the dog loved.
The location was superb as well. It's close to a nearby supermarket/petrol station if you need anything, yet still felt like it was in the middle of the countryside. 2 KM into Donegal town centre, and very close to many of Donegal's best attractions.

The cottage is cute and cosy and was perfect for one person. It's perfectly maintained inside and out. The house manager, Gerard, was really lovely and had great recommendations for activities and restaurants in the area. The house has a huge garden. I stayed during August but I'd say the underfloor heating in the bedroom and bathroom would be really nice in the colder months.

We stayed at Railway Crossing Cottage for 2 nights. We felt at home from the moment we arrived as the cottage is so cosy, comfortable and welcoming. It was also spotlessly clean with lovely fresh linen on the bed and equally lovely white fluffy towels in the bathroom.

Waking up to the sound of birdsong in the huge garden that comes with the property was heaven. It was almost hard to believe that Donegal town was a mere five minutes drive away!

The cottage is excellently located for exploring many of Donegal's beautiful beaches, the highlight of which was Murvagh. There are also plenty of pubs and restaurants to choose from in Donegal town. It was nice to have a self-catering option as everything in the kitchen was in perfect working order.

Staying in a property with such rich heritage and history was a rare privilege. Thank you Landmark Trust for preserving such a unique building for this and future generations to enjoy. I certainly plan to return based on this fantastic experience.

This wee railway cottage is well situated just outside Donegal town. It has been tastefully restored to its original look with the addition of underfloor heating. This heating did away with the need to light a roaring fire. As a sole traveller, the 4' double bed didn't give me any issues. Gerard was very helpful upon arrival and kept in touch on my departure.

The location, grounds and cottage are really lovely and well maintained. It was easy to access, directions were good. Regarding WIFI and television policy, I think it would be better to provide them and let the visitors decide if they wish to use them. We were lucky with weather but on a rainy evening, it would be great to have the choice.
The bed in this cottage is very, very small so it was uncomfortable to sleep in and we are not big people. Being a one bedroom cottage there is no option to move room. I'm not sure what can be done about this as the bedroom is small also. The bath may need a curtain, it is difficult to shower without getting water everywhere in the room.
On the positives, the house is beautifully set out and carefully decorated.

Thank you for your review. The majority of our properties do not have TVs or WiFi for two reasons. We want our guests to enjoy a digital detox and enjoy peaceful quality time at our properties. Also, our properties are so remote and our heritage properties walls are so thick, its not possible to get a signal or any reception through. This one bed property has been carefully restored back to its original condition and is presented as it was, with small rooms to be enjoyed as a step back in time.

Stayed here for 3 nights in January and it was just magical, weather was perfect and my dog loved all the space in the garden. Everything you could possibly need was in this cottage. Service was superb, Gerard was available for queries at all times. It's so close to a nearby supermarket/petrol station if you need anything, yet still felt like it was in the middle of the countryside. Beautifully renovated, highly recommended for a quiet stay.

Spoke to Gerard the day before arrival he explained everything we needed to know from directions to how to work everything in the cottage. The cottage was very cosy and very warm, was equipped with all we needed for our 3 night stay, would definitely recommend if you’re looking a break away and some peace and quiet.

We really enjoyed our autumnal sojourn in this house, which provided access to Donegal Town quite close by, and the landscape of South Donegal. There are quiet roads for walking on the doorstep.

The house is a great base for exploring the south of Co Donegal. Internally the facilities are typical of Irish Landmark Trust, but limited by the small size of the rooms. The interior is a little dark, due in part to the style of the curtains and the unpainted brickwork and joinery.

My wife and I and our Corgi had a great week in Donegal. A big part of it was the cottage. Our only quibbles, which we had learned about in advance to be fair, would be the low water pressure in the bath/ shower and the size of the bed (OK, the bedroom couldn't take a much bigger one!)

However, these were minor issues compared with the cottage itself, which was small but lovely and cosy, with a huge back garden which the dog loved. The location was perfect, quiet and peaceful but only a few minutes from Donegal town. We didn't meet Gerard the property manager due to Covid restrictions, but he was very helpful answering our texts both before and during our stay, and had the house and garden in great condition. We tried most of his recommendations for food places, beaches etc, and they were all spot-on. So all in all a very positive experience, and we would certainly book an Irish Landmark Trust property again

We really enjoyed our stay in Railway. It is a quaint, traditional cottage which is well equipped with all modern conveniences. Liaison with, Gerard, property manager, was great and with easy access and departure. Location near Donegal town on the Killybegs Road was good, with easy access to South Donegal, including Sliabh Liag, stunning. Cottage well equipped - only addition I would recommend would be, perhaps, an outdoor table and chairs (maybe wrought iron in keeping with the traditional style of the cottage?). All in all, we enjoyed our 3 night stay and look forward to experiencing further Irish Landmark Trust properties.

We had a lovely 3 days in the railway cottage. It’s a great location to base your stay in Donegal from if you’re driving. Taxi into the town was between 6 and 8 euro and not hard to get. The facilities are basic in the cottage, we had trouble getting the temperature just right in the shower and you have to sit in the bath to use it. There is no tv or couch, just two armchairs, books and a radio but in the end it was a really enjoyable stay! The place was spotless and had a really old, quaint feel to it!

This is the second time we’ve been to Railway Cottage and it certainly won’t be the last. The property is beautifully maintained with the lovely traditional exterior and very tasteful touches of modernisation inside. From the moment you step into the garden and hear the birds singing there is a real sense of peace and tranquility. It’s also a convenient location for exploring the surrounding beautiful beaches and is extremely close to Donegal town. Highly recommended. It is a real privilege to have access to a property like this.

Thank you so much for having us at the Railway cottage. Our stay was superb. The cottage itself was beautiful, and the grounds were lovely. We had fantastic evenings in front of the fire and the underfloor heating was a welcome touch in the mornings and helped keep the cottage lovely and warm.

The location was superb as well. 2 KM into Donegal town centre, and an hours drive to a host of Donegal's best attractions.

We added on an extra night, as we were so delighted with our stay.

Thank You

We thoroughly enjoyed our time in the railway crossing cottage. It is a beautifully restored cottage in a wonderful location - a very pleasant place to spend a significant birthday, especially sitting by a blazing fire in the evening listening to music and sipping a glass of champagne. We had a great time in Donegal too, visiting the castle and the railway museum. Although the latter was closed for renovation they kindly invited us in and told us all about the museum. On a very rainy day we visited Killybegs and learned lots about Donegal carpets and the fishing industry at the museum set up in the carpet factory.

Stayed here for 3 nights and had a very relaxing time and were well looked after. Location is great (although don't think it's completely secluded, it is in a small residential area). Less than 5 minutes drive from Donegal town. Property was exactly what we hoped for and expected but it may be smaller than you think from the photos. Bed, although small, was perfect.
All I would say is, if you plan on bringing a pet, the garden's great but not completely secure; dogs could get out and dogs will come in (although friendly).
Would recommend this for a couple's retreat!

Hi, we stayed in Railway Crossing Cottage for two nights. The place is very pretty and well presented. Gerard has contacted us re key, and access was grand. He had put underfloor heating on before we arrived, but explained that it was hotter in morning. There was plenty of fuel, so we enjoyed old fashioned nights in front of roaring fire, listening to ‘wireless.’ Also put hot water
Bottles In bed well ahead of bed time. There wasn’t enough hot water for a bath, not a big deal. We had a gift voucher, and were happy it was accepted. Had to put money to it, so really not great value for the cost at all. About 300 for two nights, when there are lots of offers available that include dinner. We enjoyed our stay, the cottage was presented beautifully. Trish

The cottage is restored to a very high standard with an old world charm. It is steeped in history. It is set in a tranquil garden where you can imagine the trains once running. It is ideally situated close to amazing beaches and cliffs of the Wild Atlantic Way. Donegal town is only 2 km away with lovely pubs and restaurants.

Railway Crossing Cottage is carefully and authentically restored and provides an accurate insight into how people lived 100 and more years ago. Modern amenities (running water, hot showers, electricity for light, refridgeration, cooking and heating) take the edge off what must have been what we'd regard today as fairly harsh living. The small cottage windows remind us how light modern dwellings are, and encourage us outside where the cottage grounds are beautifully kept. It is a haven of peace.

We stayed for 3 nights midweek on a special officer which was great value. The one bedroom cottage is quaint in a lovely setting with a big well kept garden at the back. It is well located about 3km from Donegal Town but feels like you are in the middle of the country. We had two very wet days which was a pity but we looked around Donegal Town and took a very good tour of the Castle, visited Killybegs with it's beautiful large fishing trawlers and visiting cruise ship, went to Slieve League which is out of this world even though the clouds covered the tops of the cliffs etc. Hopefully we will return when the sun shines as so much depends on the weather.

We had an amazing few days at the Railway Cottage. It's a stunning little cottage just a few minutes from Donegal Town
a great location beautiful grounds so cosy so peaceful we had beautiful weather and spent the days on the beach. It is so well cared for the House Manager is amazing. We intend to go back in the winter and light the fire. Thanks to Irish Landmark Trust.

Wonderful to see you had such a nice time at Railway Crossing Cottage. As a guest you are helping us in our mission to save, share, and sustain Ireland’s built heritage. It might not feel like your holiday is anything but a relaxing indulgence, but when you stay in an Irish Landmark property, you’re part of a community that’s helping to keep heritage alive. Each of our properties has been carefully restored, but it is the guest – and all those who visit – who add the essential heartbeat that gives new life to these properties.

My husband and I had three lovely nights in the Railway Crossing Cottage in September. It's so cosy, comfortable, quiet and restored beautifully too, with colourful flowers in the window boxes adding a perfect touch for photographs! The setting is great, we had several long walks on the country roads around it, and it is a perfect base for further exploring of beautiful Donegal. The caretakers Gerard & Mary, and Irene in the Irish Landmark Trust office, were all so helpful to deal with too.

The railway cottage is in a great spot being just out of town but in a quiet location. The views from the cottage over the large garden are lovely. The fireplace was wonderful. We greatly appreciated the armchairs ( not shown on the photos Irish Trust have on their website) to sit by the fireplace in. The bathroom was very cute ( and the hot water was adequate) and there was space next to the bedroom we could put all our bags in so we didn't feel crowded. The bed was small but was fine for a couple of nights. Someone has decorated the cottage in a very tasteful way. We found exploring Donegal county was one of the highlights of our trip around Ireland as it is full of natural beauty and with relatively few other visitors. We had a lovely time here.

Wonderful to hear you had a nice stay. Thank you for mentioning the armchairs, we have not had the chance to update our photographs yet so lovely to hear you enjoyed sitting in from of the fireplace. Great to hear you had the chance to explore Donegal. It really is one of the most beautiful unspoiled counties in Ireland and Irish Landmark are delighted to have 4 properties in this marvelous part of the country. We do hope that you let friends and family who will be visiting Ireland in the future know about Irish Landmark properties and the work we do to save, share and sustain some of Ireland's built heritage.

We stayed for 3 nights in the Donegal railway cottage. The cottage is truly beautiful. Our experience was so relaxing and extremely enjoyable. The cottage has been wonderfully restored with everything needed for a memorable stay. A lovely location, just outside Donegal Town. We will return.

We have stayed in quite a few ILT properties. 3 days. This was 7 days. It was amazing. Secluded but not isolated. The cutest cottage with beautiful grounds. Wonderfully laid out inside and out. Perfect for a couple wanting to tour Donegal and come home to something cosy. We were very sorry to leave. Thanks to Ger. Could not recommend it higher. Well done.

The cottage is tiny but very charming, everything was spotlessly clean and the house manager Gerry was great.
A lovely base for exploring the wider area, just outside the town of Donegal on the road to Killybegs / the Atlantic coast.
The house is beautifully restored with everything you could need for a few days break.

Myself and my husband really enjoyed our stay in this beautiful Cosy Cottage just 2km outside Donegal town.
Every part of the cottage was beautiful.
The house is perfect for two. The bed as very comphy but we did think it might be too small for some.
It's an easy 20-30 min walk into town. There are loads of lovely places to eat/drink and plenty of taxi's to get home.
We stayed in one night and lit a fire. I wouldn't do this again as it got very smokey.
One disappointment was that the bath cannot be used for a full bath. As there's not enough hot water.

As is the case with all the Irish Trademark Trust places we stayed in recently, this one was outstanding. Gerard was gracious and the house was perfect for our needs. We only wish we could have stayed longer.

We spent three cosy nights in Railway Crossing Cottage just outside Donegal town. It was easy to find and it's just perfect for a couple. We loved how steeped in history and how beautifully restored it is. The location is great, just on the edge of town but really rural once you stroll away from the cottage up the hill where there are beautiful views to be had. The facilities are basic but exactly what you need and it was lovely to sit in by a real fire every night listening to music, chatting and reading.

We went to explore Donegal County as we had never been before so the location isn't exactly ideal for that, but it was fine, a little more driving than we might have liked, but if you were just exploring the area, including Sligo, Lough Erne and North Mayo, then it's perfect.

If your looking to get a feel for what it was like to live in a real traditional Irish stone cottage (but with subtle modern creature comforts) this is for you.

The location and history of the place is great, it's close to Donegal town (€6 taxi trip) and an ideal base to try the marked local cycle routes (outside the door) or to head up the coast along the fantastic Killybegs coastline and hiking up Slieve League (recommended).

We eat in The Olde Castle Bar (Fish restaurant) and we'd recommend The Forge pub, a proper cozy old school buzy country bar.

Final big mention to Gerard, your local friendly host and a mine of local information and tips.
