The Barbican, positioned beyond an old stone bridge over the Glenarm River, is a charming building with gothic windows and a stone turret staircase. Built in 1825 from local basalt, this medieval miniature castle is a perfect romantic hideaway in one of Ulster's oldest villages.

  • Sleeps 2 people. 1 Double Bedroom.
  • Pets are not permitted.

The Barbican is a totally delightful place to stay and SO unique. You will feel like you have been transported back into the mists of history when you stay here. Very atmospheric, yet very comfortable as well. The Barbican has a full kitchen and all of the modern amenities. Check in was extremely easy. Walking the castle grounds is wonderful. Would definitely recommend and hope to stay here again in the future!

We stayed at The Barbican for 6 nights after 3 days of driving from Sweden and I can only say it was very much worth it and we hated to leave this gem. 3 floors including a roof terrace with an amazing view over the hills, the ocean and the lovely sleeping village of Glenarn.
Thanks also to lovely Alison for great support and quick answers to our questions.
I stayed at Loop Head Lighthouse 10 years ago and this was also a true gem so how many of those are out there run by Irish Landmark Trust? Next time we are planning an Irish holiday it will be so hard to NOT book ourselves into The Barbican. Once again, thank you, Alison and all at Irish Landmark Trust.

A very unique experience to stay in a gatehouse. The apartment was well set out and we loved the rooftop alfresco area. The only downside was there were lots of stairs as each room was on a different floor.

The property is a perfect base for exploring the north-east and not far from the many tourist traps in Northern Ireland. The town has a real charm with many walking trails and very few amenities (you will need a car for groceries/restaurants), but that is the absolute charm of this hidden place. The people there we met were all very friendly and very welcoming. A genuine gem in the Irish Landmark Trust’s Northern Ireland portfolio!

I honestly could write a short story of how much I love the Barbican, it was the crown jewel of all the amazing places we stayed during our 15 day honeymoon to Ireland, and I specifically planned our itinerary around the calendar availability of it, which also happened to align with my 31st birthday. From the moment we turned the corner and were face to face with the Barbican I just knew it was going to be a fairytale! I loved every little architectural detail - the basalt exterior, the gorgeous spiral staircase with little windows (all of which had various flowers and potted plants sitting in them which just made it feel all the more romantic and cozy), the incredible vaulted ceilings, thoughtfully curated antique furniture, and the amazing rooftop that offered panoramic views to the harbor, the river, the town, and the Castle grounds. The fact that a property like the Barbican is available for holiday rentals was all the more impressive - I have so much respect for the Irish Landmark Trust! My husband and I were actually thrilled to find out that the sleepy towns around us did not have much in terms of nightlife - fine dining, pubs, etc. because we were able to pick up dinner at the nearby take away, and get the rest of what we needed from Spar and the off license hidden in the nearby town and just relax in the kitchen and dining room in the Barbican. Waking up to the bird song was such a treat, you feel so connected to nature and history in this beautiful gem! Also, my husband and I were blown away by the Glenarm Castle Walled Garden and Castle grounds - they were full of such a vast array of beautiful plants that were exploding in bloom during our visit - and has a sense of folly that made me feel like a kid again! We are both landscape architects and this was one of the most breathtaking, inspiring gardens we visited on our honeymoon! We will most certainly be back in the future.

Thank you so very much for your really very lovely review of your recent stay at Barbican. Thank you for choosing an Irish Landmark Trust property for such a special occasion, 2 very special occasions! It is wonderful to hear you had such a magical stay and that you really enjoyed your time there. It sounds like you really did just nestle in and enjoy making Barbican your home for the few days. It is wonderful when people really do understand what an Irish Landmark experience is all about, simply to take the time to stop, relax and enjoy the moment in an otherwise busy world. We do really hope to welcome you back again in the future. Oh, and many congratulations from us all at Irish Landmark Trust.

We had 8 days in Ireland and arranged for the last 2 days to be spent at The Barbican. One of the days was spent touring Giant's Causeway, Dunluce Castle, Carrick-a-Rede rope bridge, and Dark Hedges area. The second day was spent in Belfast. The following morning we drove back to Dublin airport. I mention all of this because The Barbican was perfectly centralized for these activities. Now let's talk about the castle...

The good:
Location - conveniently located along the Antrim Coast. Stunning area to explore. Small coastal towns.
Surrounding grounds - walk the perimeter of Glenarm Castle and have access to the walled garden. Access not available to the general public. Beautiful - and one of the highlights of our trip.
Castle interior - comfortable, authentic, wood fireplace for evening relaxation, everything that you need is provided.
Access - the property manager with whom you coordinate access is pleasant and prompt. Any questions were answered.
Local shop - The Blackthorn and Willow just a couple of doors down is a wonderful, welcoming little shop/cafe.
Price - the value for the price is fantastic. Our airport Comfort Inn + Suites overnight stay was more expensive than the Barbican. Would you rather stay in a crusty, musty generic hotel room or a nearly 300 yr old castle?!? C'mon.

The bad:
There was absolutely nothing bad about staying in The Barbican. If we are ever in the area again, we WILL book The Barbican but for a longer stay. What an amazing, romantic, time traveling experience. It was one of the highlights of our trip to Ireland.

A couple of things to know however:
-Parking is on the inside of the castle grounds. After struggling to find a parking spot outside the castle, we then gained access only to realize there is exclusive parking just on the other side of the gate. Oops.
-There is no shower. But the tub is approximately 7 feet long. Most of us have become accustomed to showering and well...now ya know, there's no shower.
-There is a guy who tends to the larger Glenarm castle who will come and go through the Barbican gate underneath you at all hours of the night. Don't be alarmed. He is a nice guy - but hearing those giant doors opening underneath you as you sleep is a bit alarming the first time.
-There's almost nowhere to eat in the little town of Glenarm, but just 5 minutes northward on the coast in Carnlough. We ate at both the Londonderry Arms and The Glencoy Inn and would recommend both.

We really enjoyed our stay. We loved the authentic style of the castle. The log fire was a welcome bonus. The situation in the grounds of the big castle was magnificent, where you could wander freely. There was a beautiful forest walk carpeted with bluebells and wild garlic. A really magical get away.

Travel back in time at the wonderfully atmospheric Barbican. The place is beautifully restored with lovely views from the roof terrace. While there is all the charm of living in a castle, like the spiral stone stairs, there is also all the comforts of home. There are beautiful river, forest and village walks nearby.

I cannot say enough about this place -pictures do not do it justice! Much more magical in reality . Penny ( whom looks after the place ) is a pure gem really helpful with settling us in . It felt like a step back in time-using a bath (no walk in shower) no tv or WiFi ( just reading by the fireplace )the locals were friendly ( suggesting local take away -no restaurants in the village ) beautiful walks through the quaint little village and countryside ( hearing the crispness of the leaves under your feet no
Passing traffic besides fellow walkers or cyclists).

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Barbican for two nights. It was such a fantastic experience to stay somewhere so unique and special and historic. Everything was beautiful and the attention to detail was remarkable. The place was so warm and comfortable and cosy. It's a real haven, a real retreat. Penny's warm welcome really set the tone for the whole stay. The area is very picturesque and wonderful to explore if you can drag yourself away from your cosy retreat for a few hours but you could equally curl up in front of the wood burning stove with a good book followed by an afternoon snooze and this would be heaven too.Wander up to the roof to stargaze on a clear night. It really fulfilled our expectations and more and we're looking forward to repeating the experience.

My wife and I stayed in The Barbican over new year. Penny met us when we arrived and explained the facilities and where everything was - also very helpful with local knowledge and advice about walks/shops/pubs etc.

The place itself was proper medieval with narrow and steep spiral staircase the only access to the bedroom/bathroom and lounge/kitchen areas. There is also a roof-top level where the battlements are which contains picnic table / seating area plus lovely views over the grounds and the castle and the local area.

Facilities within The Barbican are ideal for a couple with spacious bedroom and bathroom as well as lounge/ dining / kitchen area. Self catering. We had a wonderful, relaxing time and wouldn't have changed a thing.

We had a wonderful stay at the Barbican a truly unique destination to spend a couple of days. A cosy fire and beautiful surroundings to spend a lovely evening. The large bath was a nice bit of luxury but be warned you do have to bring your own rubber ducks! Joking aside this is a glorious place and a great introduction to the landmark trust, we would definitely go again and explore more landmark trust properties.

We had a wonderful weekend, starting with a very friendly and informative welcome from Penny who explained everything we needed to know. Very comfortable and warm accommodation despite being an old building. A privilege to have a castle to ourselves, especially when looking out from the roof patio. Loved opening the gates to access private parking space. Couldn’t walk in Estate on Saturday due to an event, but more than made up for this on Sunday, taking the private path along the river. Nearby Walled Garden tea shop great.

Our stay at the Barbican was simply wonderful. Penny, our host, was friendly and responsive and went to extra lengths to provide information and suggestions. We would absolutely book again, but are also eager to explore some of the other properties offered by Irish Landmark Trust.

This is a fantastic property in a dream setting! We had a very beautiful anniversary. Getting to the location was easy and arranging the meeting time with Penny was completed via email. We took a walk along the river and enjoyed the wildlife and peaceful setting adjacent to the castle.

Stayed here for 2 nights last week. Penny was so helpful and very knowledgeable. The accommodation was excellent. The area itself only has one small shop and the two pubs do not serve food but there are take aways near approx a 10 min journey max. Other than that you can cook yourself. Would also recommend the cafe in the estate grounds lovely food. Overall a very enjoyable experience

The Barbican tower was wonderful to stay in, beautifully furnished, warm and comfortable. We loved it. Our host Penny showed us everything we needed and had suggestions on what to do in the area. It's a shame Glenarm has nowhere to eat in the evenings but we stayed in and cooked one night and it was great to spend the evening in enjoying this unique property.

My husband and I had a wonderful visit to the Barbican in early Autumn. The leaves were just starting to change and only added to the magic of the property. It was simply serene and the landscape of Glenarm was so charming. The Barbican itself was quite a fairy tale and a big highlight of our trip to Ireland and Northern Ireland.

We were only in N Ireland for a few days so stayed at the Barbican for 3 nights. We could have stayed much longer as there is so much to see nearby. The property was beautifully kept with an intriguing book collection. Above all it was a great place to stay and just wind down. Penny and her husband were very helpful, particularly over a mix up with keys. We would love to come again for longer.

Also accessible for people without a car. Shop nearby, Restaurants in Carnlough. Because of the (many) stairs a little bit of fitness will be useful…

We had a wonderful 3-night stay at the Barbican. The view of the Barbican across the river is stunning. The rooms are cozy, comfortable and well-appointed. We had lovely weather, and were able to have our meals on the roof-top terrace. We loved the Walled Garden of the castle, and the lovely tea house. One day we got up very early and took the scenic drive up the coast to the Giants Causeway and Bushmills. Another day we drove down to the Titanic Belfast. We also took the very informative and moving "black taxi" tour and the City Hall tour in Belfast. All were exceptional experiences. The Barbican feels peaceful and remote, but it is easily accessible to the many attractions of Northern Ireland. Thanks, Penny, for taking care of us!

Delighted you had such a wonderful time and that Barbican was a perfect location for all your explorations.

Penny was a very welcoming hostess and provided really useful information, which we used during our holiday. Loved the quiet magical atmosphere of the place. Glenarm is a great central location for touring around Northern Ireland. Loved the long bath tub (being 6' 4'') but found the bed a little short. A few extra privacy screens would have been good in the bathroom and bedroom.

By far, our favorite of all of the places we have stayed in Northern Ireland and Ireland. Quite, private, beautiful, spacious, historical and esthetically pleasing. Great amenities considering it is a castle guard house. Penny, the host, was welcoming and quite helpful. We hated to leave and wish we could go back soon.

What a wonderfully unique place to stay, every time we drove through the big electronically operated doors, parked in our space inside the castle gardens and entered the Barbican up the stone spiral staircase we felt like Lord and Lady Muck returning to our own castle.
On arrival we were greeted warmly by the lovely Penny who showed us round the property, explained a few things and then left us to enjoy. We didn't see her again until we were leaving but it was good to know that throughout the week she was always on hand should we need to contact her.
The living accommodation inside is clean and tidy with a well equipped kitchen, a good bathroom and a comfortable bed. Although the furniture is old it's comfortable enough and in keeping with the style of the property, modern furniture would look terribly out of place here and take away the whole essence of the experience.
At the top of the barbican is a wonderful, private outside space overlooking the town of Glenarm to one side and the castle grounds to the other. Thanks to the good weather we spent most of our evenings up there.
Accommodation is on 3 floors, all accessed by the spiral staircase so wouldn't be suitable for anyone who might struggle with that, and also has an efficient modern central heating system and wood burner should it be a bit cold during your stay.

Glenarm itself has little to offer, the are 2 pubs and nowhere to eat, but it's a very short drive to Carnlough where there are plenty of places to eat and then return to the peace and tranquility of the Barbican.

This was a 'surprise' for my hubby's b/d and it didn't disappoint! Enchanted dwelling, stunning views, friendly locals in the quaint little village of Glenarm. The Barbican is a magical little castle, and a perfect place for a romantic get-away. Stunning forest walks, beautiful scenery, friendly locals - especially Penny, our House Manager, who was the perfect hospitable host, with the friendliest of welcomes and lots of tips and stories. I especially enjoyed the wood-burning stove, which we lit every night, to add to the coziness. The rooftop terrace is also a bonus, and we had wonderful weather, so we spent a lot of time there, sipping vino and admiring the stunning surrounding scenery. There is lots of lovely flaura and fauna on the adjoining castle grounds and river walks, plus lots of pheasant, lambs, cows, and you may be lucky enough to spot a red squirrel! There was also a Bloom Festival in the castle grounds the w/e we stayed, so we were spoilt with a stunning array of the most beautiful tulips I have ever seen, plus lots of local crafts, tasty local cuisine and very friendly locals. We had some tasty fish & chips in the nearby village of Carnlough, and of course a leisurely drive on the amazing Antrim coast. I was very glad we had an extra day to our w/e, as I found it very difficult to leave this enchanting dwelling. If you enjoy a peaceful setting, switching off from the rest of the world, and are a lover of nature & long leisurely walks, you need to escape to The Barbican for a few days. You won't be disappointed. We certainly weren't. I felt privileged actually, to be able to spend some relaxing, quality time in such an old, historic dwelling, which has been so lovingly restored and looked after by Penny & The Irish Landmark Trust, and to share this special experience with my hubby, made it all the more special. We hope to return sometime in the future to 'escape' ... and enjoy 'the simple thing's!

It sounds like to you had the opportunity to truly embrace an Irish Landmark Experience and this makes us very happy indeed to hear. Since 1992 Irish Landmark has conserved and now manages over 30 quirky, eccentric, and distinctive buildings across the island of Ireland. As a non-profit organisation and an educational charity, our primary aim is to conserve and sustain iconic buildings. That’s why Irish Landmark properties are living buildings, not museum settings. While the conservation and restoration work always respects the history and architectural integrity of the structures we conserve, we also ensure that our properties have all the contemporary comforts you want in a holiday home. The Barbican is so much more than just an interesting place to stay - it's an adventure! Although the Barbican is actually a gatekeeper's house, it is a miniature castle replete with its own spiral staircase, turret, crenellation, and portcullis! Of course, the Irish Landmark Trust has ensured that Barbican has every amenity possible without changing the authentic feel and purpose of the place. The weather while I was there was quite cold, so I greatly appreciated the radiator heat and the wood-burning stove. I loved cooking in the well-equipped kitchen with its beautiful views over the little town of Glenarm. I also got a kick out of entering and exiting Barbican through the gate with its authentic portcullis - not your typical "hotel" experience!

If you're considering renting Barbican, you should know that the living areas are all on separate floors accessible only by stairs. Upon entering Barbican, you must use the spiral staircase to climb 28 steps to reach the bedroom. From the bedroom to the kitchen/dining/sitting room is another 18 steps up the spiral staircase, and another 17 steps further up to the crenellation. Also, the bathroom is only accessible via an ordinary staircase (9 steps down) from the bedroom. Barbican has no elevator, so you must be able to lug whatever suitcases/bags you brought with you up/down 28 steps using the spiral staircase -- I got a little dizzy! If you can manage the spiral staircase, you will love Barbican! The ambiance of Barbican is fabulous, very peaceful and quiet, and I found LOTS to do in Glenarm, including visiting the town's two pubs (shout out to Coast Road Inn and Bridge End Tavern) and the Glenarm Castle, as well as buying fresh-baked bread at the Blackthorn and Willow.

with no T V o.. internet access it was a real pleasure to relax by the stove fire with one of the many interesting books in the collection available or a game of chess or scrabble. The walks around the estate are wonderful especially by the river and through the woods and by the lovely pastures, plenty of wildlife and beautiful flowers. The tearooms and walled garden are a must, there are so many places to visit all along the coast and up in the Glens. The self catering facilities are excellent, nice touches add to the experience, tea, coffee sugar ,milk and fresh flowers!Such a relaxing couple of days it was hard to close the door and leave. The welcome from Penny was terrific and her advice about activities was invaluable. The personal touches were hers!A return visit is a must

What a beautiful place to spend three snowy days! As there was unusually heavy snowfall during our visit, a lot of places in Glenarm itself were closed, but this just allowed us to take a much-needed rest day from our month-long tour of England and Ireland - and we couldn't imagine a cosier or grander place to sit by the fire and relax.

Having our very own (immaculate, welcoming, warm) castle to stay in was nothing short of magical. Penny, the house manager, was so friendly, helpful and flexible, taking the time to show us around the Barbican and castle grounds even though it was cold and dark by then.

So sad to leave, but can't wait to come back in the summer one day!

Thank you for taking the time to let Irish Landmark know about your recent stay at Barbican in Glenarm. We are delighted to hear that the unusual heavy snow did not hinder your stay at all but rather gave you some time to truly relax and enjoy your time at Barbican. We hope you’ll agree that a stay in an Irish Landmark property is memorable, comfortable, and elegant without any manufactured lifestyle gimmicks. Irish Landmark offers its guest more than just a place to stay. At our properties you have an opportunity to experience the best of a former way of life: beautiful architecture, fascinating history and a peaceful relaxed ambiance, where you decide the pace of your holiday. It is wonderful to hear that you were so well looked after by the fabulous Penny. Irish Landmark are very fortunate with our House Managers as they are so caring about the property and guests.

There was much more to this property than we thought. It has a washer and dryer. The kitchen and dining area are separate from the bedroom and bathroom. The bathtub is the longest tub I have ever seen. There is a fireplace with wood provided. etc. etc. etc. We just wished we had more time!!!!

My wife and I spent two nights at the Barbican 2 weeks ago and had a wonderful time, even with the cold and rainy weather. We enjoyed just relaxing and hanging out for two days in the middle of our Northern Ireland excursion, doing a little exploring, but not as much as the other days of our trip. Penny was very helpful in getting us settled in, and imparted a lot of useful knowledge about the area. One cool thing we found out from the tourist office there in town was that the jewelry store next door, Steensons, did all the jewelry for Game of Thrones!! They even had some prototype pieces on display! And of course we bought some of their pins and necklaces since we are such GOT fans! We also visited the shop just down on the corner from the Barbican, "Blackthorn and Willow," had tea and some biscuits, and bought some prints from them. It is a very cozy shop, with great local crafts for sale, and a very lovely proprietress. To end, when we come back to N Ireland again we plan on staying at the Barbican also again!

I am sorry to hear the weather was not the best during your stay but great you got a chance to get out and explore the beautiful setting of Glenarm (and got a chance to pick up some souvenirs). We've spent the first couple of days of our honeymoon at the Barbican and it was one of the highlights of our stay. The scenery, the architecture, the cozy fireplace, the roof terrace, the library/books in the living room and the wonderful bedroom - we've had a great time. It is very quiet and the experinece of 'living' on a castle compound is really unique. Since it is an old building, there are some "roommates" (spiders) lingering in the Barbican, which visitors simply have to put up with. All in all, it was one of the most amazing accomodation we've ever had and we would most certainly recommend staying at this property.

This was an amazing stay. Everything was perfect from our initial meeting with Penny who handed over the lodge to us, the ideal living conditions and stunning bedroom with ensuite. It was very unique and so comfortable. There was even a fantastic outdoor area on the roof which would be stunning in the spring and summer. Brilliant stay, thank you!

The Barbican was our first Irish Landmark Trust stay. It was an incredible experience. We were greeted and shown around. The town was very quaint and beautiful. It was so nice to get away from the hustle and bustle of a big city. There is no wifi or TV which was also amazing to disconnect from the world and take in the in the beauty of Glenarm. Will definitely come back in a heartbeat!

All of the furniture/fixtures were clean, but the thick cobwebs and crazy amount of spiders made me feel this place isn't ever thoroughly cleaned. Yes it's a very old castle, but people are always staying here. And the webs were so thick and behind every piece of furniture, doorways and on the radiators, etc. along with the spiders who reside in them. Plus many other insects all over. Had to sleep with a light on. There are no lights around back where you park and it's very hard to see. Glad there is a motion light by the doors at least. Aside from this, it was really neat to stay in such an old castle and the managers are very friendly. There is really nothing in this area except one locals bar that doesn't close early so you need to drive to get food or anything.

Thank you for taking the time to write to us about your recent stay at Barbican and letting us know that you were warmly welcomed and taken care of by your Local House Manager. With regard to your comments about the condition of the property, these were quite surprising to receive. The House Manager of Barbican is exceptionally house proud and has received many top ratings for the cleanliness of the property by previous guests. If you could please forward on any photographs that refer to your comments so we can look into this further. From time to time spiders can make their way into the lower access point of Barbican; the location before guests ascend to the living areas. This property is a castle with high vaulted ceilings and stone stairwells so this can occasionally make some people a little uneasy but I can assure all our guests this property is exceptionally well managed and taken care of by our Local House Manager.

From the time that we drove up to the gates to when we left after 3 nights was a magical time we will never forget. Just loved the spiral staircase up to our rooms, sitting by the fire and enjoying a Glenarm steak for dinner, and walking around the grounds and township. The hospitality shown to us was so greatly appreciated. We will never forget this experience as one of the highlights of our trip to Ireland.

Staying at the Barbican is truly an adventure. Surrounded by gorgeous grounds, within walking distance of a delightful teahouse, next to a bubbling little river, the tower is very, very special. We stayed a week, long enough to get familiar with the structure and the area, and as time went on we became increasingly house proud. Penny took great care of us and we found the tower clean and comfortable. For me, nearing eighty, the circular stone steps between every floor were a real challenge, but they were worth every step.

Hey there Emily and Bob. I am so glad to hear that your stay at Barbican was lovely. I am so sorry that the steps up and down were a little difficult for you as I know they are not easy going (one of the lovely characters of this property but also one of the most challenging). I am glad that you found the effort worth it though. Perhaps on your next stay with us we can find you somewhere with fewer floors to go up and down to. I promise you will be as well looked after as the wonderful Penny took care of you.

We loved our three-night stay in the Barbican. It was straight out of a dream--standing tall and proud across the footbridge. The circular stone staircase was a delightful surprise. We loved all the large windows in the bedroom and kitchen. We were blessed with two sunny days and enjoyed using the rooftop patio. One day we explored the local area--walked by the river, ate at the tea room, visited the walled garden, and walked the village. The next day we went north to the Antrim Coast--played golf, walked the rope bridge, and visited Giant's Causeway. The kitchen was perfect for preparing breakfast and dinner. All in all a wonderful experience--certainly gave us the downtime we were seeking. Staying at the Barbican will be a beautiful memory that will stay with us for years to come.

Stayed at barbican for 3 nights as a minimoon after our wedding wanting a unique & relaxed environment - the barbican was perfect on both fronts. Place is exactly as per photos. Due to location & age there is some dust & cobwebs in places but overal quite well kept. Lack of shower is understandable but not ideal although we were aware before booking so can't complain. Phone/radio reception is very poor with no tv or wifi but again made clear in description so we were aware of lack of access to media - next time we would bring something to make some background noise though. Got great weather so spent most of our time on rooftop terrace drinking wine which was lovely. Also did trip to horn head which is amazing & titanic experience with befast city just 45 mins away. The village itself is beautiful with really friendly locals. Two decent pubs but a real drawback completely outside control of barbican is that there is nowhere to get an evening meal. About a 3 mile trip to adjacent villages required. Pity that the castle is only open to public at very isolated ocassions as would have been nice to see inside. Also if i was to criticise anything it would be that your stay doesn't give you access to walled garden of castle which costs a further 8 pound - its not a huge amount but seems a bit cheap that at least a single visit wouldn't be included. Overall it was a truely unique & very enjoyable experience. I wouldn't go back but that's only because I've now seen this place - i would definitely use landmark trust again & would just chose one of their other properties.

Thank you for taking the time to let us know about your recent stay at Barbican in Glenarm. We are glad to hear that this property provided you with the unique and relaxed environment you were seeking for your stay when you made your reservation. Regarding your comment about dust and cobwebs can I please ask you to get in touch directly with me at [email protected] and inform me if this was inside the property or at the access/outside of the property. Our Local House Manager is meticulous when it comes to cleaning of Barbican so I have to say it was very surprising to read this comment and I would like to investigate this further. The decision to exclude WiFi and televisions from our properties is something that Irish Landmark is one that we see as a positive which facilities guests to plug out, switch off and reconnect with friends and family. Glad to hear that you got a chance to avail of the rooftop terrace with some good weather; the views are lovely from up there. Glenarm Castle and Estate is separate from Irish Landmark, and I am afraid that we are not in a position to offer guests access to the estate. Irish Landmark Trust is a non-profit organisation and as an educational charity, our primary aim is to conserve and sustain iconic buildings. Therefore, any funds that is left over after costs have been deducted, go directly back into sustaining and conserving these historical properties for the future. I am afraid that additional items such as tickets to events, etc; would significantly reduce these conservation funds and hinder Irish Landmark from hopefully conserving or saving our built heritage in the future. When a guest stays in an Irish Landmark property, they become part of a community that’s keeping heritage alive. We do hope to welcome you back to another Irish Landmark property in the future. Do keep in mind that as a Repeat Guest that you get a discount on a return stay so do get in touch.

This was a trip highlight staying in beautiful Northern Ireland in the Barbican. We were an hour drive from Giant's causeway, the neighboring town has a grocery store for eating in and pizza for bringing back as well as local restaurants. Our hostess was very helpful and the Barbican was larger than I expected- such a neat property! We extended our trip to stay here and were so thankful we did.

Set in beautiful sleepy village with scenic views. Excellent base to explore other areas along the coast. Rooms clean, comfortable and bed linen smelled just laundered. Kitchen well equipped and there's a lovely tea room and gift shop on site. The walled garden is well worth a visit if only to sit and while away an hour surrounded by nature. We were lucky to get a couple sunny days so we're able to take advantage of the little roof garden. Would definitely recommend and will look forward to visiting other Irish Landmark Trust properties.

The building is a wonderful and unique property. The way the giant doors open to let you pull in and access your stay is really cool. It sits over the town and just off a little river/stream and you can get onto the roof to look out over the Sea and town. It's beautiful. If that history and uniqueness is enough for you, this is a perfect getaway spot and truly a unique place to stay. If more modern comforts are required for you and the novelty of it all is not enough to make up for things the property rightfully lacks, this might not be for you. We unfortunately struggled with the primitive aspect of the Barbican. It is 100% our issue and we should have known this was not really for us. If you are taller than about 5'10 the bed is very difficult as it is very short and my feet went through the bed post. We woke up with dead spiders on us that we had crushed while sleeping in the night. The downstairs area where you park has hoards of flies and smells pretty terrible. This is not an issue once you go inside the Barbican, just around the property. We were glad we stayed there one night but chose to just leave and not use it the second night. Not having wifi, no shower, and coupled with the other things made us feel like to truly relax and enjoy our vacation we would be better off in a hotel. Again, this is a wonderful property for some, but for others it might not be what you are looking for.

Since 1992, we have been saving some of Ireland’s most iconic buildings, and making them accessible to the wider community. We always restore properties sensitively, with a focus on best practices in conservation, as well as comfort for our guests. We specifically decided on no WiFi or televisions at our properties to allow guests to reconnect with family and friends without the distractions of modern day electronics. There are radios and board games at all of our properties for guests to avail of if they so wish. Regarding the structure of the properties themselves, yes our buildings were made to the standards of earlier times – and sometimes without the intention that they should be lived in. Consequently, guest may encounter features that reflect their particular character but that deserve due care and attention, particularly by the young, elderly, less mobile or visually impaired. Examples of these are steps worn with age, uneven surfaces, low ceilings and beams, unexpected drops or changes in level, and by modern standards low or absent lighting. In all cases we have sought to make a sensible compromise between due regard for safety and the careful retention of the fabric of each building, which makes it an interesting place to stay. An Irish Landmark experience provides guests with the opportunity to stay with friends and family in some of Ireland's unique buildings and truly connect with Ireland's built heritage and landscape.

We absolutely loved the Barbican! The tower is beautifully decorated and had all the facilities we needed. We were lucky to have lots of sun, so we especially enjoyed the roof terrace!

Cosy up to a fire with your loved one after a nice meal and then strolling the castle grounds for a true romantic experience.

Only an hour from giants causeway and carrick-a-rede bridge if you are a touristy type. Perfect if the weather is good as aw lovely roof terrace awaits you or if the weather is bad, stick on a few logs :)

Wonderful stay at the Barbican. Welcomed by Penny who was lovely. Penny showed us round and explained everything fully. The Barbican is truly magical. A unique place to stay. We didn't want to leave. Would love to return. Plenty to do in the local area.

Penny was great! We were delayed in Belfast traffic but she was able to accommodate us! She recommended the bakery for bread Saturday morning and showed us the path to run through the grounds!
The Barbican itself is amazing. Spacious and has everything you'd need!
The village is small but the two local pubs were friendly after a walk on the beach.
Great experience!

A peaceful, quiet property in a quiet town. Add in the sensational other-worldly Glenarm Castle Gatehouse I found the magic I needed to forget about work back home. Other lovely towns and spectacular natural sights are just down the road, but one can also slow down for a little while with no TV or personal electronic devices and be transported away from daily cares. The caretaker could not have been friendlier or more accommodating. The woodland walks and the ocean frontage walks really clear one's head. Well done, Irish Landmark Trust and the owners of Glenarm Castle for allowing holiday accommodations in special properties such as this. I made a long journey for this experience, and it was wonderful.

This property is in a perfect location for seeing the north east of the country. Places like Belfast or the Gisnts Causeway are within easy reach. Glenarm is a very peaceful village with plenty of first walks or scenic drives. The Barbican was very clean and well presented to us when we arrived.

Excellent place to stay. My wife & I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of our time here & we were sorry to leave, we wished we'd booked to stay longer, so we will definitely be back. An absolutely wonderful place for a stay in Northern Ireland. The Barbican is wonderfully unique and has every facility that you could wish for. It is obviously loved and well looked after by the key holders. It is better than the pictures and write up describe it. The area itself is beautiful whether you just wish to drive around or get out into the Glens and hike.

Easily booked with great flexibility by the manager, Penny, as we arrived some 4 hours later than anticipated without any problem from her. Given the proerty age it is in good condition but I think that with some slight improvements the break could have been exceptional. Admittedly, we stayed longer than most visitors but we were left with a bottle of milk as a welcome. Whilst there was tea and coffee, this could have been upgraded by a little pack say bread, local jam, butter maybe a bottle of wine which we have had at other similar stays. Equally, the furnitue could be improved. Yes it is old but a nice confortable pair of chairs at the end of a days walking would be most welcome. Similarly, the bed is hard and the pillows could be of a much better quality.

Thank you for taking the time to write this review, we are really delighted you enjoyed your stay and had a nice time at Barbican. I have passed on your comments about the comfort of the furniture. I just wanted to take a moment to address your comment about leaving out food or wine. Unfortunately we are not allowed to leave food or drink out for guests due to health and safety stand practices. It is a requirement Irish Landmark Trust must adhere to in order to continue to rent out these properties to the public. Whilst we would love to leave a welcome package for guests I am afraid we are not permitted to.

When you find something a little special, that you'll remember for the rest of your lives, the price is irrelevant, and even then it wasn't particularly dear. There is a wow factor as you approach...and as long as you're not looking for mod cons (like a shower or a TV) in a castle, when you can draw a bath instead, sit and read and chat, then you won't be disappointed. The views from above are wonderful; the peace and quiet, sublime; and the walks within the grounds (without even having to get into a car), gorgeous. If you enjoy cooking, buy top class ingredients and extra special wine and share it with no-one but yourselves...it'll still be cheaper than in a restaurant. Blissful tranquility, away from all stress...and the village is still on your doorstep.

We had a wonderful three nights stay in the Barbican, it is a very special and unique building which has been restored faithfully as I imagine it would have looked like. All of the furniture and features throughout created a lovely, homely atmosphere to help you get settled into straight away. We were welcomed within minutes of arrival by Penny's friend, Colette who took us around the building to show how everything worked. It's such a beautiful building and like no other place I have stayed in and to have it all to yourself was wonderful. Penny had left some milk for a lovely cup of tea on arrival and there was everything needed available for us to use. Penny had even decorated the castle with holly and berries for the Christmas period making the place feel festive and welcoming, such a lovely touch to think of! Also to have access to the stunning Glenarm castle and grounds was an unexpected treat. We were blessed with good weather to explore the surrounding coastline and countryside, very beautiful indeed. Penny called to check that everything was OK and when we had a small issue with the heating not coming on, she arrived within five minutes and had it all sorted. Fantastic. All in all I can not recommend this place enough, it's perfect!

We stayed for 3 nights at the Barbican and had an amazing time. It is perfect location for exploring the causeway costal route. Glenarm has a lovely craft shop where you can be gorgeous fresh bread on a Saturday as well as having 2 good pubs. The Barbican itself is a perfect place to get away from everything, very cozy and comfortable.

We didn't really know what to expect when we booked our stay in the Barbician initially. All I can say is that the pictures do not do this place justice. It is fair to say that it was the most romantic place that I have ever stayed in. The setting and location was spectacular. The Barbician itself was warm and cosy, this was something that we didn't expect in such an old building. The building itself was tastefully restored, combining the old with the new in a sympathetic way. The weekend made us stop and appreciate the little things in life. The fact that there is no TV or WIFI made us appreciate our surroundings and brought us back to a time gone by. Every evening we looked forward to sitting in front of the open fire and enjoying each others company with no distractions. Penny the property manager was amazingly helpful and gave us some great information on the local area.

The bed is horrible and that's the only negative about The Barbican because...........
This place is magical. If you want to step back in time but with modern conveniences this is the place to be. The kitchen/dining/sitting area is adorable with a wood burning stove to boot. The kitchen has anything you need and the bathroom has THE BEST TUB in it. It's just a plain claw foot tub but it's reallllly long and deep AND there is unlimited hot water. The bathroom steps down from the bedroom and is a very cute combo. The spiral stairs from bottom to top are beautiful and the rooftop is spectacular, with views of the castle directly behind The Barbican, the Glenarm River directly below and the bay where the river meets the ocean. You can walk the castle grounds, stroll by the river, stroll through Glenarm Forest, or jump in your car and hit the coastal causeway at the edge of town.

........and Penny McBride, the keeper-of-the-key to The Barbican is a gem. She starts your stay off right.

Loved this place. It was like stepping back in time.

Despite the curved stairs that had to be climbed to the bedroom and kitchen (which were expected), this place was so wonderful to stay in. I felt transported back in time every time I pushed open the heavy wooden door and climbed the stairs. Penny was so nice and helpful and we loved talking with her. The little town of Glenarm is quiet, right on the coast and close to some of the most beautiful landscapes and interesting places to go. Hope to be able to go back and stay longer than the 3 days.

Great walks along both sides of the river, walking up to the Walled Garden and having tea and cake outside in the sun, visiting the Steenson's jewellery workshop and sitting up on the roof amongst the swallows - just some of our fabulous memories of this stay. Comfortable and picturesque, with a friendly, efficient welcome from the house manager. The only thing I'd change is the six cock fighting prints - a bit gruesome and out of place in the serene green/blue bathroom. But a lovely break overall and a privilege to stay in such an unusual and beautiful place.

The Barbican is a magical, romantic and super interesting place to stay, full of history and beauty. It is set in the grounds of Glenarm Castle which is still lived in by the original family who have lived there for generations. This means the estate is beautifully kept with stunning trees, views and a phenomenal walled garden that is out of this world. We just thoroughly enjoyed our moment of feeling like royalty. That aside the Barboican has a stone spiral stair case and a table and benches at the top where you can see the village and the sea and the castle grounds, and the interior feels both antique and warm and modern.

If you think the photos on the Irish Landmark Trust website make this place look good, your expectations will be outdone by its charm and beauty and specialness "in person." The setting--with the sea in one direction, the castle and its gardens in another, and a forest preserve just up the road--is equally enchanting, and perfect for long, head-clearing walks. The tower itself is a cozy gem, with a comfortable bed, an excellent little woodstove, an eclectic library, and some fascinating prints and paintings on the walls.

Penny McBride is the ideal host: she's warm and helpful and has a wonderful sense of humor, and gamely answered my various questions (such as: where to watch the Euro Cup final?), and left lovely, fresh flowers in the house, and gave us fresh milk and extra bedding on arrival. In the village, the Bridge End Tavern has reliable WiFi (if you absolutely must), and a great pint of Guinness.

After four restful, memorable days and nights, it was hard for me to leave The Barbican--and I look forward to returning as soon as I can.

Apart from 4 days of solid fog and mist we greatly enjoyed our sojourn in the Barbican. THe appartment was warm and cosy and the faciilities more than adequate.

Penny Mc Bride was excellent and very helpful.

The walled garden of the castle was worth the trip on its own.

Only down side was the one local shop in the village.

Although we had a little problem with the key collection, our stay at the Barbican was fabulous! A wonderful old gatelodge, vaulted ceilings and the spiral stairs leading to every room. Picnic bench on top of the tower, tasteful antique interior combined with the comfort of modern times. Beautiful views from every window. Thank you Penny and Sue for everything. You made us feel welcome. We would love to come back.

We had a fantastic time at the Barbican. It was a real step back in time. So thankful to the Irish Landmark Trust for preserving these historic buildings for others to enjoy. The castle's walled garden was full of tulips in full bloom. It was lovely. We loved our time at the Barbican. "Our mini castle" we called it and look forward to visiting other Irish Landmark Trust Properties.

From the moment we entered Castle Street we felt we had been rocketed back in time. The Barbican is a magical site, over a tiny bridge surveying the river. The stairs are not for the weak of heart, but believe me the daily climbs are worth it. As it was such a spellbounding place we ate in ...... cozy in our fireside chairs after dinner. The kitchen is well equiped, the bed and linens divine and the interior bright as there are windows on both sides. The tower lookout is splendid for viewing the sun come over the wee mountain while savouring that first coffee in the morning and at dusk a glass of wine to see the sun setting over the village rooftops. Penny McBride is a wonderful host - warm and friendly, a true Irish greeting. A stroll into the village to the pub to use wi-fi while you sit by the fire and sip .....chances are you won't have time to use your email, as the local folks are engaging and chatty so it's more fun to chat with them and leave emailing for when you get home. The forest walk along the river on the castle grounds is not to be missed . The tea room on the grounds has excellent young staff and delicous food. I highly recommend this little jewel.

The Barbican is in an amazing location, but unfortunately a film crew blocked the front of the place and had noisy generators going throughout our stay.

My wife, 2 year old daughter and I stayed at the Barbican for a long Easter weekend.
We were not disappointed, it is a magical place to stay especially for a 2 year old, she really thought she was a princess for the weekend. The accommodation is ample plenty of space and everything you could need.
Penny our host was welcoming and informative.
Our only suggestion to the Trust would be to include a fact sheet about the history of the building, the renovations etc. As it would have been nice to know the history.
We would definitely recommend the Barbican.

It's a shame that the barbican is only big enough for two in that it would be ideal for children with imagination! As it was we had a ball living in a small castle only a stone's throw from the real Glenarm Castle, Home of the Earl of Antrim and his family. From the roof terrace one could see the whole of the town of Glenarm and the marina plus the Castle and a fair bit of the estate. The only sour note was that the outside temperature was near freezing on the first night we were there and the doors had been left open so despite the gas central heating and the wood burner(not lit) in the living room it took all of the first evening to get the inside temperature up to an acceptable level. It might be good idea for the wood burner to be lit prior to guest's arrival so that the premises are warm for guests' arrival when the place is let during cold weather. It would also be useful if there was a notice beside the wood burner saying where the wood stockpile was as it wasn't within the premises.

Thank you for taking the time to write a few notes on your stay at The Barbican. We are delighted to hear that you had a great stay and that you got to enjoy the view from the rooftop terrace. I have been in touch with the Local House Manager regarding the fire not been lit for your arrival as this would be the usual practice at Irish Landmark Trust properties welcoming guests on their arrival. We had a back up House Manager looking after the property for your arrival and a small oversight regarding lighting the fire was made. I do apologise for this. I can assure you that The Barbican always has a warm welcome for our guests. Just a quick note regarding the wood stock you have mentioned ... I would like to inform guests that, as stated on the information sent to guests regarding their stay at an Irish Landmark Trust property, there is enough firewood supplied and left in the property for a fire on the first night of their stay. If a guest wishes to have more fuel supplied this can be arranged with the Local House Manager prior to arrival or guests can also be directed to a local supplier that would stock fuel for consumption.

Magical relaxing stay.

First of all, on arrival, Penny made us feel very welcome and we were very much assured that we could treat this as our wonderful home for the weekend and to be sure to enjoy it. This property is amazing. Full of character and beautiful features. Set against the backdrop of a beautiful castle and estate, we thoroughly enjoyed feeling part of it. It was lovely to climb the winding stone stairs into the cosy bedroom and living areas with the stove lit and the heat on and to just sit and relax and listen to the birds singing and the river gushing outside and to enjoy a deep soak in the large bath in the evenings. Blissful location for a perfect getaway from the humdrum of a busy life. Restaurants and significant places to visit are only a short drive away but we wanted to enjoy being in the property as much as possible and so we self catered mostly and relaxed in this beautiful place. Thank you Landmark Trust once again for a unique weekend away. Cannot wait to try some more properties.

We had a lovely stay that far exceeded our expectation. Penny McBride was very helpful with all aspects, she was flexible in times to meet us to hand over the keys and gave us a thorough intro to the property. The property itself was gorgeous, very romantic and combined period features with modern day comforts beautifully. The setting was stunning, we had a great time.

We had an idyllic stay at the Barbican. As a small fairy tale castle, it is totally enchanting and blissful. Although we felt as through we had been swept away to a bygone era, the castle had every modern amenity making our stay immensely comfortable. Penny, who looks after the property, gave us a very warm welcome and had a lovely glowing fire on to greet us. The Barbican and Glenarm is a haven of tranquility set among the majesty of the Glens.

More comfortable than expected during some very cold and windy days. Ideally located with quiet estate on one site and village on the other, and easy driving to the sights of Antrim. Very pleasant bedroom, well equipped kitchen. Very dark nights, great for star-gazing from the roof.

We were delighted with our stay at the Barbican - a fantastic experience to be able to reside in such an amazing place for a few nights. Our time at The Barbican was magical. Everything was perfect! We appreciated the opportunity to stay for three nights for the price of two. This was one of the bonuses of travelling a little later in the season. We have told many of our friends about Landmark Trust, and we will certainly investigate your organization for future holidays.

What a great place, a lot bigger than we had imagined. I also didn't realize the amount of steps it takes to reach the living room, but hay your in a castle and what a little gem.. The comfort is almost excellent... really it needs a 2 or 3 seater sofa, currently only providing 2 armchairs is quite disappointing. I have noticed this mentioned before, so hopefully the organizers will comply... Other than this, it is such a wonderful place to stay, you won't be disappointed.. The locals are very friendly and the scenic route to the causeway just fantastic...really breathtaking. We even managed to convince the Chinese takeaway in the next town to deliver... Just to mention, Patricia the host was so nice, very professional and such a lovely person...To summarize, we had a fantastic stay.. Thank you to all involved.

The Barbican is a really unique place to stay and one that I will always remember fondly. If you only stayed put in the tower, enjoying its homely charm you would have a wonderful time. Add to that the perfect location to explore the Antrim Coast and you have the perfect place for two people to getaway and explore all that this corner of Ireland has to offer. I imagine that myself and my boyfriend will be back and I encourage you to visit too.

Really enjoyed our stay here. It was magical waking up and absorbing the character of the bedroom. It felt homely but yet completely different to our modern living. The kitchen was fun, looking out to the street below. The main entrance door provided us with some laughter as well as beautiful photographs.
The Barbican is beautifully situated and we had some lovely walks. Our host Penny was charming with lots of practical advice. As it was a surprise for my wife it was nice to have tea and milk to hand on arrival.

The Barbican more than lived up to expectations, from the friendly welcome to the well presented property and peaceful setting. We were quickly joined by Sue who showed us around, advised on any essentials and gave us tips on where to eat or visit and left us with the assurance to ring if there were any issues. Although we had brought our own supplies it was very nice that there was coffee and fresh milk there for us, the fresh flowers were also a lovely touch. From washing up liquid to bed linen, towels and a hairdryer we did not feel there was anything missing that we would have needed.
We found the property clean and well presented with all facilities in good working order. Maybe the chairs were not the most comfortable and the bed and pillows a bit on the hard side, but that did not detract from the charm of staying in your own little castle. We loved the spiral staircase, even when you headed the wrong way up or down more than once.
The rooftop is wonderful to sit in the sunshine, yes we did get some, or to lean on the turrets and watch the world go by, even at night to look out over Glenarm or watch the bats, only 2 of them, fly about was very relaxing.
There may not be much in Glenarm itself, but it is not far to Carnlough or even Larne.
We would definitely return again ourselves and have recommended it to friends and family.

This is an amazing building to get to stay in. Its feeling of age or timelessness is added to by the furnishings, books and decorations that look as though they have been there forever. The views from the roof area are amazing and the constant sound of the river is totally relaxing. The one reservation is that to go from any one room to another you must go up or down the stone spiral stairway for which you need to be reasonably able-bodied. The kitchen is well stocked for all that one would need - and more - for a short stay and the fresh milk in the fridge and the few basics like tea, coffee and condiments were a welcome surprise. The village is well located for several scenic drives and walks and for an interesting walk around itself. A great place to relax away from the stresses of today.

In many respects our stay at the Barbican was perfect because it was quiet, romantic, private and atmospheric. Everything that we needed was there, some of the books on the shelves were fascinating and definitely added to the character of the place.
The photographs of the Barbican on the website were accurate and realistic. The old roll-top bath was wonderful, and there were lashings of hot water, but we did miss a shower in the mornings.
The whole experience was memorable and unique.

...heritage doesn't have to preclude hygiene or comfort. Sticky tablemats, dirty pans and unhygenic work surfaces are not what we are used to when self catering (and, yes, we have staying at historic properties elsewhere). Old chairs do not have to be uncomfortable. In fairness to the housekeeper, it is not possible to check thatwashing up has been done properly in between each let. The Barbican is not cheap, nor is cleanliness expensive; the let could be made 5* quite easily. My recommendation is made on the strength of the location and the building itself. And the wonderful bathroom, even without a shower!

As people who grew up in the Carnlough/Glenarm area we are very familiar with the Glens and Coast. Still beautiful!
The Barbican was as expected and our introduction by Suzanna excellent. The bedroom and bathroom were very good. The living area could use more comfortable fireside chairs and perhaps the addition of a small nest of side tables to avoid setting tea, or coffee cups on the floor. The weather during or stay was good. However, knowing the local possibilities in this regard a little more comfort would be good for evenings. The kitchen and dining were fine.
We realize that the addition of wi-fi may be difficult. That said, it would be very useful. Especially to visitors from out of the UK and Ireland and especially those from significantly different time zones. For those who need wi-go Stevie McCauley at be Bridge End Bar at the main road is a great place to connect plus have good local input.

We had a great time staying for 2 nights at the Barbican in Glenarm. Beautiful location and a very lovely place to stay. Funished in the style of an old mini-castle, it was almost like finding treasures in the bookshelves. The only thing we missed a little bit was a shower next to a bath, but we don't see how you could fit that in...

We've been lucky enough to stay in five Irish Landmark Trust properties now, and this is at the top of the list for us - a fantastic building in a gorgeous setting; on a clear day you can see Scotland from the battlements! (at least, we're pretty sure it was Scotland...) A word of caution - there are LOTS of steps, and the chairs in the sitting room aren't the most comfortable - but it seems churlish to quibble about small details when you have your own miniature castle to stay in. Loved the enormous roll top bath, the swallows nesting over the gate, the wood burning stove, and fabulous roof terrace with views of the sea and the castle. Also, amazing walks to be had through the estate, along by the river and through the woods. Lovely, friendly pub in the village too if you can tear yourself away - and a special mention to Penny who gave us such a warm welcome and was so accommodating.

Just two nights was not enough. But I had the spiral stone steps linking the bedroom, sitting room and roof terrace to keep me fit; the Walled Garden tea room kept me fed; the views inspired and the peace and tranquility of the property and the area renewed my energies. Thank you, Sue and Irish Landmark for preserving this beautiful place for me and for everyone.

We spent two wonderful nights at the Barbican. We truly felt like we were living in our own castle. The bedroom was lovely, with a very comfortable bed, and the bathroom had a luxuriously large bath. Our favourite room was the charming kitchen/dining room/sitting room, with its wood stove. We also loved the views from the rooftop. The village has a café, convenience store, a pub or two, and a lovely tea room at the castle gardens. There are also lovely walks in the surrounding countryside. We were able to get to Glenarm by bus. The house manager was kind and very helpful.

Loved living above it all in The Barbican, which was simple in its comfort and good to come back to after a day exploring. The location is ideal with amazing countryside and coastal scenery, local walks and wildlife. A special place and experience.

Lovely, cosy accommodation within the magic of a mini castle. Warm and helpful welcome from Penny. Quiet and relaxing break, with good walks in the surrounding area and great access to fantastic countryside.

Myself and my husband stayed in the Barbican as part of our minimoon. We were shown around by the lovely Penny and settled straight in! We started off each day with breakfast on the rooftop before exploring the locality of Glenarm and surrounding towns. We could not recommend enough a stay at the Barbican for a lovely relaxing break to get away from it all! The huge bath was heaven, the bed was so comfortable, we spent our evenings reading and chatting beside the small stove fire. Bliss!

We had high expectations for the Barbican, and were surprised to have them exceeded in every way. You really get a royal feeling of living in an authentic, small castle. The views from the top of the barbican are great, overlooking the "real" castle, the town, the sea, and the hills; it's also a lovely place for enjoying your breakfast. For a self-catering stay, the place provides everything needed, from a well equipped kitchen to laundry facilities. A relaxing bath in candle-light soothes legs weary from a days adventure in this picturesque region.

I came to stay here to relax and escape from the normal rush of life and was nicely greeted by Penny the house manager.
I was able to light the fire at my leisure and come and go as I pleased, the Barbican was well stocked for my visit and was very comfortable. It was nice to be able to use the grounds of the castle and go for a few walks around. I would like to visit here again.

Spent two nights at the Barbican and wish our 8 day round trip had allowed for more. If you've ever wished to feel like the lord of your very own (small) castle, this accomodation is right for you. The gate house is very spacious for a party of two with its large bedroom and adjacent bath, kitchen/sitting room and the roof terrace including stunning views of the town, castle grounds and the ocean. The "downside" of the bath is that it has no shower, however we felt that this added to the experience and the large free-standing tub made up for this 100%. Heat and warm water as well as electricity work extremely well considering that this is an ancient gate house with thick stone walls and floors. Kitchen is quite well-equipped but could use a good overall scrub of surfaces and pots/pans/cutlery etc. The oven in the sitting room guarantees awesome cozy evenings, firewood was provided - thumbs up!

My Fiancee and I stayed here for 2 nights from 15th February to 17th February. From the moment we turned down the street and our miniature castle came into view until the morning we left we had the most relaxing lovely time.
Penny the key holder met us showed us around and was very helpful. The gate lodge was authentic in every way it was warm and cosy and so quiet and peaceful quite the romantic retreat and very unique! We went for long walks along the river from within Glenarm castle grounds what a beautiful place.
We would recommend a stay here to family and friends, even colleagues and have done in a heartbeat. We are already planning to revisit this autumn after our wedding because it is such a beautiful spellbinding heart warming place.
Thankyou Irish landmark trust for the opportunity to stay here.

Take the weekend to stay in the castle and walk around the private and public gardens. We went to see the Giant's causeway, but thought afterwards it would have been just as nice and relaxing to explore the Barbican's back garden! 5 outta 5, Great place!

Really lovely property that's been beautifully restored. Penny was very welcoming, showing us everything we needed to know for our stay. The rooms were warm and comfortable (although the chairs in living room could do with a little bit more padding) and the kitchen well equipped for a short stay. There are some great walks nearby and the grounds of the castle are also beautiful. Just beware that radio and mobile reception is not great in the property so you might want to bring portable speakers or a docking station if you want to listen to music. But that's a minor quibble really and we had a lovely, relaxing time.

We stayed for a weekend for my wives birthday and it was a perfect relaxing get away. No TV or Wifi meant we were able to relax straightaway without the distractions of daily life.
It is perfectly located in the village so we could stroll up to the local pub for a drink and mix with the locals who are so friendly.
The kitchen has every utensil you could ever need and it was a nice touch having a pint of milk in the fridge so my wife could make a cup of tea after the long drive!!

We loved loved loved the Barbican!! Everything about the place is magical. Its like someone has literally given you keys to the castle!

The location couldn't be better. Its in a quiet little town and situated right on a river. On the backside of the Barbican is the Glenarm castle estate, which is completely walled off from public and you essentially have it all to yourself. And, having Glenarm castle as your neighbor is such a priveledge!

The surrounding grounds are idyllic and perfect for walks by the river. In the town, there is a small grocers nearby, and the pub is about a one minute walk away. At the very top of the tower, you can get a great view of the town, the river, and even the ocean.

Penny, the house manager, couldn't be nicer. She gave us a warm welcome and allowed us to arrive early and stay late. She even wrote us a nice e-mail after our departure. Truly the most friendly person you could meet!

All of the Barbicans ammenities were great, although if you were staying for a longer period of time and wanted to do some cooking, I could see that a dishwasher would come in handy. But, that is being really picky!

Overall we can't say enough great things about the house, and the manager, and we cannot wait to return for a much longer stay! Well done Landmark Trust!!!

We thoroughly enjoyed our two night stay in The Barbican. It was such a unique property which had been beautifully restored. The kitchen was well equipped for cooking and the bedroom was very comfortable. It is located in a beautiful part of the country near to attractions like Carrick-a-rede rope bridge, Giants Causeway and Bushmills. Would definitely stay again.

The property is comfortable, cosy and warm. The facilities are excellent. They are even better than explained on the brief. The property had a hairdryer (which I brought!) and loads of pots and pans and dishes. The kitchen was easy to use and was a pleasure as you look out on Glenarm village. The setting is beautiful and truly idyllic. There are plenty of walks in the area. I would love to go back.

This was a surprise birthday present and all I can say is WOW, this stay will never be topped ! Barbican is the most beautiful accommodation I have ever experienced its so tastefully decorated and everything about it has the wow factor, from the moment we arrived it was just amazing, the grounds of the castle are spectacular, the most beautiful walk along the river. The surrounding areas are out of this world and it was so nice to return to Barbican and light the fire and unwind with a nice glass of veno. I loved every minute of my weekend and have every to say it was the best weekend of my 44yrs, I will return.

Fantastic, beautiful, peaceful, romantic , heavenly and any other word that can be thought of.
From our arrival, meeting Sue and then going up the stairs, to a magical mini castle. So exciting . Living in a ddifferent beautiful age. Truly one of the finest places that we have ever stayed.
No TV , mighty , (cd should be provided though) We listened to lyric fm ,though radio was a bit rusty , and read books ,cooked in on both of the evenings.
facilities great , anything you needed was provided in the kitchen.Beautiful undisturbed eating, such relaxation . Bedroom was lovely
Bed was a biteen small , perhaps twin beds that could be joined together could work better. en suite amazing with great bath .
On top of our barbican was just magical, listening to all the birds singing early in the morning , going for beautiful walks on the grounds.
Glenarm a beautiful village , with truly lovely people.

Hi,

The accommodation was lovely, very relaxing place to stay and would recommend the house to anyone. The one flaw is more around the local area, generally found we had to travel to get food - so if you want to eat out locally then this is probably not an option. Having said that, eating in was nice and just generally getting time to ourselves

Our stay at the Barbican was a marvelous retreat set in a fairytale style gate tower dating back to the 1800s. The gate lodge is idyllic and has been tastefully preserved since its renovation. We celebrated our 21st wedding anniversary there, and hope to go back again to rediscover the grounds and tea room to the Glenarm Castle Gardens. Our photos made our Facebook friends and family envious of our stay. It was truly surreal.

I booked my stay here for a surprise for my new husband on our wedding night and it honestly didn't fail to perform. I drove us up to the door with my husband's eyes closed and with the castle in the head-lights, when he opened his eyes he said, 'What? That's a castle... Is this a movie??'
Climbing up the stone spiral staircase revealed room after room of our own private luxury.
It was extremely romantic yet not over-the-top as the rooms were simple and beautifully decorated with the essentials of life.
The huge bath with plenty of roasting water and the cast iron 'antique' bed and the huge bookshelves filled with old bound books were all beyond our expectations.
Everything was set to perfection. I could not fault anything at all.

In my ratings above, I've not put 5 for value for money because I paid quite an amount for just one night there but at the same time, I probably still would have paid half as much more for the experience of being in a castle for our wedding night.

A beautiful private walk between the castle and the river in the morning just finished our trip beautifully and for sure, we will return again for much longer than one night.

I hugely recommend this dreamy stay for any couple.

We absolutely loved the barbican ! Really quaint place. We went on the bank holiday weekend so we had the buzz of the the tulip festival in the glenarm castle however the luxury of the the quaintness and quietness of the barbican. The barbican was well cleaned and the flowers in vases and milk in the fridge was a lovely touch
Sue and penny were so helpful and lovely to deal with. The bed ws very comfortable, we loved the free standing bath and heating were all perfect. The only thing I would say, blinds or some kind of material should be put on small windows behind bed. The light coming in woke us up early. But overall a pleasant and relaxing stay !

We stayed at the Barbican Gate Lodge, Glenarm the first weekend in April 2014. It was our second time to stay there as we really enjoyed our visit first time around in Winter 2012. We picked this date as it was Spring time. We enjoyed a 3 night stay and during our time there we visited the local forest for a lovely spring time walk and then to the local pubs! Hope to go back again in the future!

This was an excellent location for exploring the Antrim coast. The Barbican was a quirky, romantic and fun place to stay with an excellent Manager to give us a warm welcome and to see that everything was in place, and that we were having a good time. The inside decor matched with the setting.

We had a wonderful time at the Barbican. The property was even nicer than expected and had everything we needed. We would love to return again one day, ideally when the neighbouring walled garden is open.

We stayed for 2 nights in the Barbican and had an absolutely amazing time. The castle is beautiful, just like it looks in the pictures. It was great to have no Internet or TV, there is nothing to do but relax and sit around the stove fire.

Penny is a great host, she had the fire lighting for our arrival and was very helpful with local information.

The castle is very well heated with a modern easy to use heating system and the stove fire.

My only words of caution is that there is a narrow and steep spiral staircase, so maybe not ideal for elderly people who might have trouble getting up and down the stairs.

There is not much happening in the town of Glenarm, a small grocery shop and 1 or 2 pubs, but we didn

We loved the Barbican. It's so unusual, and Penny is lovely. The kitchen is well equipped, the rooms toasty and the fire makes everything so cosy. We had a fabuous weekend. The stairs seemed daunting at first but we soon got used to them. On Saturday we walked for four hours round the grounds. The river is so pretty. It also has an unbelievably comfortable bed!

We have just returned from the most wonderful weekend in the Barbican. We arrived to find the fire lit and the property immaculate. The decor is wonderful and the caretakers couldn't have been nicer. The town the Barbican is in a very quiet one, with not a lot to do, but this didn't bother us at all as we spent the weekend lounging around the cosy Barbican, strolling around the Glenarm Castle estate and admiring the view from the rooftop. I would have stayed for another week if we'd been able, but alas we had to leave. I very much look forward to returning in the future.

The Barbicon is set in beautiful picturesque surroundings, and a very friendly village (and pub) to wile away your time in. There are lovely walks to do and woods to explore. Ideal as a quiet escape for a weekend

The Barbican provides a unique heritage experience for those seeking a quiet, cosy getaway but with access to the wonderful hinterland of Country Antrim. We received a really warm welcome on arrival, making us feel that his was home from home - albeit in the regal surroundings of the Castle Grounds.

We felt that the addition of a shower, while a concession to modernity, would be an added bonus. Other than that, a great stay.

We both absolutely loved the Barbican. It was like having our very own castle for a weekend! The weather was terrible, really windy and rainy but it made our weekend all the cosier! We spent our time in front of the wood burning stove, reading and listening to music. The facilities are great and it's a home away from home. I would recommend it to anyone wanting total escapism from the traps of modern life like TV and internet. We'll definitely be back.

This was my first time staying in an Irish Landmark Trust building but it certainly won't be the last. Penny was superbly welcoming and gave us a great guide to the building which is delightfully quirky and beautiful.
The fireplace and huge bath add to the romance of the place, whilst the comfortable bed and all the equipment for a wonderful weekend meant you don't actually need to leave the building. We will definitely be back.

My wife and I spent our first wedding anniversary in The Barbican. We have always wanted to stay in one of the Irish Landmark Trust properties so took the opportunity. We had a lovely time at The Barbican. Driving up to the property is impressive, it's definitely a landmark! You are right in the middle of town, so local pubs and shops are easy walking distance.

It was late November when we stayed so the weather was typical for the time of year, which was a perfect excuse to sit beside the fire with a good book and relax.

There's a walk leading from the grounds of the house out towards the local forest park which is very nice, or you can walk for a shorter distance down by the sea front if you are looking to take a stroll. The town itself is quite nice, we also went further afield to nearby towns of Larne and Carnlough and took a trip up as far as the Giant's Causeway.

Definitely recommend The Barbican if you are looking for a nice relaxing and romantic break for 2.
