Standing on top of the world with panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, one can see as far as distant Scottish shores from the top of Helen's Tower. Visitors to the area can enjoy walking routes, known locally as Clandeboye Way (Helen's Bay to Whitespots Country Park). Special Notes: This property had a narrow spiral stone staircase.

  • Sleeps 2 people. 1 Double Bedroom - adults only.
  • Pets are not permitted.

We loved our stay at Helen's Tower - the contrasts of the commanding winding stone stairway up five floors, to the views from the poetry room (indeed all the rooms) and the comfort of the sitting room are lovely. From the very top of the tower you can see 360 degrees: the canopy of trees below, the beauty of Northern Ireland, away to Scotland and the Isle of Man, maybe even Eryri (Snowdon) on a good day. Walter's introduction to the tower was especially helpful and kind of him to offer so much insight and history.
The weather wasn't great while we were there, so while there was sometimes an invigorating cold running up the stairs it was easy to make the rooms on all four floors cosy. A very decent bed too! Thankyou for the privilege of a wonderful visit.

Thank you for your review and supporting The Irish Landmark Trust to preserve this iconic building. This is our most intricate of interiors in our property portfolio only ILT guests get to see. A unique experience of why the late Lady Dufferin loved Helens Tower.

Walter was extremely kind to pick me up from Helen's Bay Station as I was on public transport (my husband arriving the next day) and took me via buying briquettes for the fires up to the Tower in a blizzard. I woke up to the most magical scene which I will never forget. The whole of the forest and the landscape beyond covered in deep snow with the sun glinting through the branches. It is an extraordinary place to stay and keeps you fit running up and down the spiral stairs. Walter gave us an extra electric heater which was certainly necessary but we were very comfortable. Many thanks indeed to Lady Dufferin and the Irish Landmark Trust for keeping this wonderful historic landmark available for people to stay in. An opportunity not to be missed!

The drive to the Tower is some of the appeals. You leave the main road, drive through a far and up a forest track. The host Walter was amiable and welcoming. He chatted away and showed us how everything worked in the Tower and what we might like to go see and do around the area. We walked down the forest track to the road a few times, it took about 30mins each way. We did it at night which was fun. The Tower can be chilly we were there in December, I'd bring a woolly jumper. It's a very peaceful place, we lit the fire and read and had a glass of cider. People do come and walk up to the Tower but there is a fence around it so they can't come to the door, it was sort of nice seeing people walking up as you looked out the breakfast table window. It was cold so we didn't spend too much time on the roof. But the view is amazing you can see the Isle of Man and Walse Walter told us. The bathroom is small enough but clean and fine. You would need to be fine with the steps for this place and not be too precious about your car getting muddy. There were some war memorials on the gate to the Tower and I had a southern ireland reg car but we'd no hassle from locals, everyone we met out walking the estate was friendly and said hello.
I'd love to go back in summer to sit and watch sun go down on the top of the tower and walk the forest with the trees in full leaf. I#ve wanted to go here for about 8 years and it didn't disappoint. But it probably does look more spectacular from the outside than the inside.

Thank you for your lovely review. Its great to hear you got to stay here after so many years, a late night on the rooftop would be amazing in the summertime, I hope it doesn't take you as long to fulfil that wish!

Lovely stay, we are certainly returning for another visit!
The tower was magnificent! We spent most of our time in the living room, and kitchen. The poetry room was a bit tooc cold, but that being said it was in December!

The views from the roof were stunning, we got quite lucky with the weather.

Walter is an abosolute gent! He sorted us out with some useful travel info for getting in and out of Belfast!

We had a lovely stay in Helen's Tower, it's a magical old tower in great condition and steeped in history. Walter was wonderful at giving us the history of the building and estate. This was our first stay in a landmark trust building, but it certainly won't be our last. They are providing a great service, it's a super way to see these wonderful old homes up close!

Helen’s Tower is not for the timid traveler. We were challenged but well rewarded. Walter, the manager, was very patient with us, however, so we had a successful stay. Take plenty of food because you will not want to use the access road after dark. In fact, you will never want to use the access road as the charm of Helen’s Tower is being there.

We had such a lovely, cosy stay at the tower Walter was great and promptly answered any questions we had in advance of our stay and met us and showed us around. The Tower is lovely and cosy, with a great kitchen, good shower and lovely living room, with open fire. The view from the roof is stunning and there's plenty of great walks/ cycling trails nearby. We hope to be back!

We were met by the lovely grounds keeper Walter who was warm and accommodating from the start. He made us feel at home and supplied some insight to the towers elaborate history. The silence and solitude added to the specialness of the retreat, allowing is to fully immerse in the disconnect fr the outside world. The surrounding land provided many a walking trail which surprised us with the forests many hidden gems such as man made hints, rock formations, and chimneys left over from the quarry industry. The views are unmatched by anything I've ever seen especially as the clarity on our final night was as so that we could see beyond the Isle Of Man.
All round incredible stay, and although it was the passing of the queen of England that highlighted the news events of that weekend for me the tower will hold a special place in my heart as the place where my partner asked me to marry him!
We have recommended this tower and this all round service to our friends and family and very much look forward to staying in another location very soon!

My husband and I spent two weeks in Ireland celebrating our honeymoon and staying at Helens Tower was definitely the highlight! I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw it was available and private and AFFORDABLE! It blew away all expectations with how gorgeous everything was and the view was breathtaking. We received plenty of instructions on how to contact the owner and set up a meeting spot down the road. Michael was lovely! He was early to the meeting and took us to the tower, and made sure we understood how to get back out in case we planned to drive anywhere while staying. He gave us a great tour of the castle and taught us some excellent history on it. He provided all the information we could need on how to get around neerby and use the facilities. The kitchen and bathroom were lovely and provided everything we could possibly need. The bedroom was cozy and the bedding kept us nice and warm. We used the fireplace several times and it was super easy to get going. We very seriously considered changing all our plans to stay even longer! We have family in Ireland that we definitely encouraged to rent out the tower and if we ever are back we plan to stay here again even longer!!

Had a lovely & relaxing two days in Helens tower. Walter met us nearby to show us where to go and show us around the Tower. It's in the a beautiful wooded area with stunning 360 views. If only staying a couple a of nights I would recommend bringing all your food so you don't have to venture out. We lit the fire on both nights and had such a relaxing time. It really is a unique property and as surrounded by trees you have birds singing morning and evening....bliss

This tower rises above the tree canopy on top of a hill with panoramic views. It is a truly magical place, completely unique and special. There are beautiful forest walks from the tower. Inside, the tower is decorated in a fascinating style. The only, very small, downside is the shower which is affected by being at the top of a hill but that is a very minor problem compared to everything else.
The caretaker, Walter, could not be more helpful.
It is an extraordinary experience.
We will definitely return.

Wonderful stay, at our home away from home. This is a wonderful little gem of a property, hidden off the beaten track. It is so peaceful and relaxing, chilling with an open fire and a good red wine. During the day, the forest is a hive of activity with all the walkers, cyclists and runners but a great place to roam.

Highly recommendable, for those who value a quiet escape.

Helens Tower is a very special and memorable place to stay. The building is fantastic the setting on the hill in the woods is magical and the views from the top of the tower are stunning. It was like staying in a different time and world, a real break from everyday life, surrounded by both the natural beauty of the surroundings and the man made beauty of the poetry and romance of the tower itself.

Right from the start we were very impressed. Walter is an excellent host. The interior is fantastic, very authentic and lovingly restored with alot of charm. It really was a unique stay. Location is wonderful, fabulous grounds and yet close enough to amenities if needed. Walter provided us with a great history of the Tower and surrounding area. We took a trip to the Ulster Transport Museum and thoroughly enjoyed it. Views from the very top of the Tower are spectacular during the day and night. The Tower was very clean and we really enjoyed having a cosy, roaring fire at night in the 'sitting' room whilst the wind roared outside. Thanks to Walter and the team it really was our pleasure to have the opportunity to stay.

A historical & beautiful place to stay. Highly recommended and a good place to recharge yourself. It was also a pleasure to be staying in the tower in the remembrance month of November. My thoughts were with the men of the 36th Ulster Division who trained in the grounds below the tower and then left for further training in England prior to heading to France and the first battle of the Somme on 1st July 1916.

The location is amazing, set at the top of a hill deep in a forest. The upper floors and rooftop have an incredible vista of the surrounding countryside and coast.
The tower itself manages to have all the charm and history of it's original build but with the comforts of modern living.
The property manager is genuinely interested in the history of the area and making your stay as comfortable as possible.
I highly recommend visiting, especially if you like castles.

Once in a lifetime! I can't say enough about how extraordinary our stay was. There's nothing else like it. We had coffee and watched the sunrise from the rooftop terrace - amazing! We are definitely hoping to stay again in the future.

We loved Helen’s tower the views from the top were amazing, Walter the caretaker couldn’t have been more helpful, would recommend it as a very interesting place to stay steeped in history, and ideally situated to visit the surrounding area like Belfast and the national trust gardens and house at Mount Stewart .

We loved Helen’s Tower, very interesting history and really quaint. It may have been nice to have another bedroom so we could have had another couple to stay along with us, if we had wanted to.
Lovely rooms beautifully decorated, the only down side was that the bed was not very comfortable.
The views were spectacular and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay.
We would recommend this venue.

I had a four night stay at Helens tower, I have stayed before but this time I stayed in the summer months when there was more
daylight, I found this gave me more time to explore and get out and about for a few walks
The tower itself was very clean, tidy and comfortable and had all I needed for my stay. The weather was reasonable and I had some good views from the top of the tower, I found my stay very relaxing and I probably will come back to the tower again at some point. I was made very welcome by Walter the caretaker on arrival and found him very helpful.

Helen's Tower is a beautiful unique place to stay. Walter the house manager went above and beyond in his helpfulness and friendliness. The view from the top of the tower is amazing, and the peat fire is a great touch. This was our second visit to a ILT property and we've already planned a visit to a third property.

We stayed in Helen’s Tower for two nights and we were really blown away. It’s a truly unique stay having our own castle for the weekend. The grounds were also beautiful with endless walks around and the views from the rooftop are incredible! The house manager, Walter, was also just so brilliant to deal with and super helpful - he was very easily contactable and provided us with interesting history of the tower as well as local info to ensure our stay was perfect. Five stars!! Could not recommend highly enough.

We had a great start to our Honeymoon at Helen's Tower. Walter was very easy to contact and flexible, and made us feel settled in nice and quickly. The Tower is great, cosy rooms and surrounded by lovely forest and great for walking. Bangor is not too far away so can easily go out for food/bring something back to cook at the Tower and enjoy on the roof. We had a great time, would really recommend.

We had a wonderful time at Helen's Tower in the heart of the Clandeboye woods, our own private little castle for a couple of days. The views from the roof alone are breathtaking. A special thanks to Walter, the house manager who was of great help with little tips, advice and the history of the tower.
We would highly recommend it.

I had a 2 night stay at Helens tower, I enjoyed having some of the walks around the estate that the tower is on and be able to come
back to the tower in the evening to get the dinner on with a wee drink and lite the fire, then sit and relax.
I found the tower very comfortable and had all that I needed for the stay.
I also brought some binoculars to help with the view from the roof and could see for miles.
I would hope to come back again sometime, maybe in the spring when it is brighter in the evenings.

As the title sugests we had an amazing stay here. Everything was perfect. The property was better than the pictures or our expectations .The house manager was very nice and helpful a real Gentleman. The building was warmer than we expected especially considering it was early October. Theres a wonderful view from the roof which has a table and chairs up there and you can see as far as Scotland. We would definitely stay again and would have no problem recommending this place to our friends and family.

A remote, romantic, Gothic hideaway. Five floors that will keep you captivated; so, no, you won't mind being locked up in this tower!
A lovely welcome from Walter set the scene for a fabulous three-night stay on the Clandeboye Estate. Helen's Tower is everything the photographs suggest it is. You're surrounded too by forest trails and close to many other attractions: Mount Stewart Gardens are wonderful, for instance. We've stayed in quite a few of the Irish Landmark Trust gatelodge properties, but this ranks right up there among the very best of them. We'll hope to stay there again.

Hi there, may I first say that Walter the house manager was wonderful. A real credit to you. However, I would suggest that you mention in the add that the location is a tourist attraction. After a a very rough few moths we really needed some quiet time away, this is why we picked what appeared to be an isolated location. This was not the case at all. We felt like we were in a fish bowl. There was non stop foot fall of people at the location until 10pm the first night. We couldn't sit on the roof and have a private conversation as there were so many people talking and hanging outside. Also, when I walked out of the loo there was a man and his child looking in the window at me. We had people trying to climb the gate and try the gate lock. Walter was very honest advised to cover our licence plate as a car previously had been vandalised. I just couldn't relax. I would let people know about the location but I would be very honest what to expect and perhaps look at other location on your website first.

It's impossible to imagine the beauty of this place - it's location in nearly wild forests, the remote quietness, the antique interiors, the poetical atmosphere and the history of the tower and the generations of Dufferins behind it's existence. Walter, the caretaker, with his good sense of humor, was very friendly and helpful directing us to this hidden gem and from the moment we entered the tower we loved it. The evenings at the fireside were pure and lovely as there is no distraction from TV or WiFi, which is the real luxury...
The sleeping room was very cosy - you wouldn't expect this in an old stone building - and - hard to find elsewhere: The poetry and the drawing room!
You can't compare this place to any other - it's unique in many aspects!

I booked this as a surprise for my other half's birthday and it did not disappoint! Such an amazing building in a great location, quiet and secluded but only a few minutes drive to shops etc. if required. Walter was lovely and full of information for us plus provided some locally made and delicious yoghurts for us. Only slight discomfort we found was the mattress felt as if the springs were going so it wasn't the most comfortable, but would definitely recommend visiting!

Beyond any normal praise... or blame! Nowhere better for having a chat at the fireside with your best friend or beloved or reading a good book than this small sitting room; nowhere better for meditating on time that passes and poetry than the Gothic room; nowhere better to ponder on these Blessed Isles, as your gaze moves in one sweep from Ireland to Wales, Scotland and Man (but not England...), than on top of this crazy tower. How close they are, how obvious that for better or worse, their fates will always be intertwined. The coming months will be another phase in that long story, and let's hope wisdom prevails this time. Seldom the case in the past... Also, by night, how small this dark forest island is, how little is left for nature, as lights encroach on the horizon on all sides. (How about some inscriptions, perhaps small bronze plaques on all sides indicating what you see?) An unforgettable stay, all that follows is secondary criticism.
A minimum of heating in the staircase would greatly increase comfort and probably also help dry the walls and thus prolong the life of the monument. The windows esp. in the kitchen need fixing, and a clear instruction on how to open and close them. Else they'll be broken very soon, I think. Instructions also urgently needed for the electric shower, which is plain dangerous as of now. You could face legal claims... And finally (again, mind over matter), a small collection of better books (such as the biography of Lord Dufferin), would also be welcome. Think of anything related to the authors of the poems in the Gothic Room, something on architecture, esp. 19th century follies and the likes, geography (think of the view), astronomy (look up!) and of course the long and tragic story of Ireland. And something about your own, absolutely admirable organisation! Thank you, and special thanks to the present Lady of the House.

Everything about Helens Tower was perfect. Absoluity everything that we needed was provided for our comfort and needs.
The place is stunning. We can't wait to go back. Have tried not to recommend Helens tower as we want it for ourselves. Everybody we've told wants to go.

A wonderful weekend at Helens Tower. Walter was incredibly welcoming and was a goldmine of local information. The interior of the tower was immaculately presented and spotlessly clean. A number of small unexpected touches were so thoughtful and very welcomed. It was so peaceful, remote and totally different. Highly recommend.

myself and my partner spent an enchanting weekend at helens tower, the tower itself is so full of charm, character, and steeped in history, the rooms on all levels were spotless and the views from the top terrace are beyond words, all while nested in a lovely forest area which has lots of walks and a beautiful lake contained within, will definitely be back again

We enjoyed our stay in Helen's Tower from beginning to end. We were warmly welcomed by Walter who was full of local information, tips and insights. Each room has its own unique atmosphere and enjoying a glass of wine on the roof with panoramic views on all sides was particularly memorable. We felt privileged to have an opportunity to stay in such an historic landmark. Walter

Not only is Helen’s tower amazing and totally worth your money, Walter, who helped us, was outstanding in his communication and follow up. The space is comfortable and the kitchen is well stocked with all you need for cooking. There’s a comfortable space for cards and a fire, with all the fire necessities provided. The poetry room is perfect for looking out on a rainy day or improving your literary prowess. The view from the roof is stunning and we lugged our entire dinner up there because it was absolutely worth it! Quiet. Beautiful. Unique. Perfect. Thank you!

Helen's tower was just as pictured! My husband and I stayed for two nights and had a lovely time! The poetry room and sitting room were gorgeous and romantic. Our favorite place was the roof of the tower and we spent an evening up there watching the sun set over the beautiful scenery. Everything was clean and the bed was very comfortable. Staying here was such a treat!

First up - this tower is INCREDIBLE, and you won't find anything like this anywhere else in the UK. Period. The experience of being able to essentially stay for a few days in such a historic and beautiful setting is absolutely stunning. The history of the place, the delight of sitting by the fire in the luxuriously decorated and panelled sitting room, the wonder of perusing the poetry lining the walls by Tennyson, Kipling and Robert Browning is wonderful. And the privacy of having it all to yourself is incredibly exciting - AND the Irish Landmark Trust make it incredibly affordable for such an astonishing experience.

I brought my fiancée (now wife) Helen here as a surprise part of our honeymoon and it was the most wonderful time. We both completely adored the tower, the setting, the forest, and the VIEWS! The only thing you do need to be aware that - yes - it is actually a 150+year old stone tower, so yes the bath is tiny, and the shower is pretty uninspiring, the bathroom is poky, and the bed is basic. But how can you really care about any of that when this kind of experience is once in a lifetime, and if anything adds to the magic! If you absolutely must have a modern characterless bathroom and bedroom, then head 20 minutes up the road to the Premier Inn. But if you want to live some history, experience a truly lovely piece of culture and unforgettable escape, then don't hesitate for even one second.

The Landmark Trust and Walter (who helps run the tower) are extremely friendly and helpful and accommodating. However booking can be tricky as the tower remains the property of the estate, so dates can be hard to pin down anything more than a few months in advance. So be prepared to be a bit flexible!

Loved the place. Helen will never forget her tower!

We spent 4 nights at Helen's Tower and wished we had been able to stay longer. It was the perfect base to do day trips to many sites nearby (Ulster Folk & Transport Parks, Belfast sites, Mount Stewart Estate, etc.). Upon arrival, our gracious host, Walter, met us and we followed him to the tower which is set in the woods on the estate. Walter gave us a tour of the tower explaining how everything worked along with the history of the tower, and also providing recommendations of things to see in the area. After each day of sightseeing, we returned to the tower, built a fire, picked up our books and a glass of wine, and had incredibly peaceful evenings in a magical setting. We highly recommend you consider a stay at Helen's Tower if you are in the area.

We had a wonderful stay in Helen's Tower from the moment we met Walter, who guided us up to the tower through the magnificent Clandeboy Estate where there where bluebell glades under the most beautiful trees. The tower itself is so special...... cared for with much love. Sitting by the open fire in the restored beautifully decorated sittingroom, it was like being transported into another world. It was a memorable treat from my daughters for my 60th birthday and I certainly will never forget it. Being a person with great interest in gardening and period houses.... one of the days we spent in Mount Stewart.......not to be missed. The scenery on the Ard peninsula and Strangford Lough is so beautiful and Walter will fill you in on everything as well as giving you Clandeboy yoghurts for breakfast...... what's not to enjoy.

We had a brilliant long weekend at Helen's Tower. The property is in a splendid location and the views from the top are wonderful. The Poetry room has a special ambiance and we thoroughly enjoyed eating dinner there high among the treetops. The house manager Walter was extremely helpful and informative.

The only slight recommendation is to upgrade the electric shower unit as the temperature control is more variable than might be desired.

Late January - weather cold - Walter's welcome warm - as was the tower after a couple of hours.

Everything provided to make a four night stay memorable; even snow was thoughtfully laid on which gave the surrounding woodlands a magical aspect.

Much to see in the area even in January. In fact there were a few places on our list which we did not get to due to lack of time so a return visit is a must.

The tower is beautifully located at the highest point of the woodland on Clandeboye Estate. The nearest neighbour is a good 15-20 minute walk through woods which gives a great sense of privacy and uniqueness. Although it's old, the tower is modern inside, with a fully equipped kitchen. The poetry room and living room seem to be more alike to the age of the tower but are still extremely comfortable. Rooftop views are excellent. Walter is a great host and was super-helpful upon arrival. Great stay all together.

We met with our host and he was most knowledgeable about the history of the tower and the area. He made sure we knew how everything worked and he even had us follow him to the grocery store so we wouldn’t get lost along the way. He was most welcoming and made us feel like home.
We then spent a wonderful 2 days at the tower soaking in the beauty of the area and reading by the fire. Coulln’tt have asked for a better stay. Will definitely tell everyone we know about our wonderful experience!

A fabulous location, it is so wonderful to have access to stay in old historic buildings like this, it is a very special place. Helen's Tower was a complete antidote to our modern digitised world. A place to either stop completely to read, draw and relax or a base to explore county Down. The Tower warden, Walter was very welcoming and accommodating to all our needs.

Helen's Tower is something special. What a wonderful stay for my wife's 40th, the drive through the forest to the tower is incredible. The location is fantastic, only a 20-minute drive into Belfast, although we spent most of our time in the tower. Great memories of breakfast on the roof terrace every morning, and popping champagne in the poetry room on the evening of my wife's birthday. Everything about our stay was perfect.

Had a fantastic time at Helen's Tower the tower itself was totally amazing and the view from the top was beautiful especially if u get a good day. Everything was there for u and with having no television was even better as we played the board games provided which in normal day life rarely get to do and the walks in the surrounding woods was lovely so quiet and peaceful. Would definitely stay here again .

Truly a one-of-a-kind experience. Traveling as a couple, we found the Tower to be a real home away from home: cosy and very comfortable. We were blessed with outstanding sunshine both days we were there, so our rooftop dinners in the evening times were something very special: 360- degree view of the sunset over sumptuous countryside is something we won’t forget any time soon. Totally unique and historic property. Amazing views, great historic rooms, peaceful location. Lovely walks. With minimal attention the property could be so, so much better though. The mattress was soft, bed squeaky, the decor (other than wonderful historic items, and antique furnishings) was cheap, casual and lacked attention, sofa soggy needing new cushions, wall artwork cheap, ornaments cheap. Kitchen basic but with little effort could have been excellent. Cheap microwave, old hob and oven, plastic table cover, basic pendant lamp.

Thank you for taking the time to let Irish Landmark Trust know how your stay at Helen's Tower went. We are delighted to see that you enjoyed the spectacular setting of this historically important property. It's setting deep in the woodland of Clandeboye Estate is something very special indeed. Please note that your comments about some of the interior elements of the property will be forwarded on to the Standard's Officer straight away and if there is something that needs to be addressed this will be done so. Irish Landmark Trust is a non-profit organisation and operates within a very tight budget but we will investigate into your comments further.

Fantastic property. After planning our trip we arrived and all my dreams came true. Exactly the peace, layed-back feeling i had imagined and then those 360 around views!! Breakfast on the roof, early evening drinks and romantic open fires at dinner. Everything was perfect. A little gem.

Turning the corner on the dirt rode and getting our first glimpse of Helen's Tower was almost surreal. Going inside and seeing the modern kitchen and bath was a surprise. Relaxing in the "Sitting Room" with a crackling fire made my bride feel like a princess. Reading and playing games in the "Poet's Room" surrounded by such history was a feeling I will remember. The view from the top of the tower is stunning. And then there are all the walking trails around the property.
Going to Helen's Tower is stepping back to the 1800's and you can almost forget the rest of the world does not exist. A magical experience.

So wonderful to hear that you had such a lovely stay at Helen's Tower. No matter how many photos we take of the property for people to view on the website, nothing really can prepare you for the way the tower appears out of the top of the trees as you head up the track ways deep into the forest. We hope to welcome you back again for another magical stay.

We had a fantastic time in Helen's Tower. It is an absolutely wonderful property, beautifully fitted out and decorated, a lovely secluded location in the woods with an incredible view from the top. It was a quite cold when we first entered but there are storage heaters on timers and a couple of additional electric heaters provided, so once we turned those on and got the fire going, it was warm and cosy. Our only regret was that we couldn't stay longer!

Thank you for taking the time to let Irish Landmark know about your stay at Helen's Tower. It is wonderful to hear that you had a lovely stay and got all cosy during your time there. There is a spectacular view from the rooftop alright, great that you got a chance to see it. When the weather is fine the views do go on for miles.

Had a wonderful stay at Helen's Tower from the minute we arrived to the last look back as we took the twisty road back to reality. Could have stayed there for longer. A fabulous property in a wonderful location. It was such a real secret hideaway, that we felt like we owned the place. Would totally recommend it to everyone, as a great place to unwind and reconnect. We will be back again.

We chose a break at Helen’s Tower as part of our 35 year anniversary celebration. When we first spotted the tower in the distance (thanks Walter) we knew we were entering a fairy tale. The sense of peace and tranquility was palpable and the rooms are filled with character and stories. Log fires, walks to the lime kiln and Old mines. Late night coffe on the roof watching walkers on torch lit trails - just magic. Special thanks to Walter, he made us feel at home and had everything ready for us. Definitely want to return.

Thank you for choosing Helen's Tower for such a special celebration. Irish Landmark are just delighted to hear that it made your 35th year that little bit more special. The roof really is amazing in the evening time with zero light pollution and a view for miles. Delighted you would come back again, perhaps we can make it an annual celebration! If you do return to Helen's Tower, or indeed any of our other 31 properties around the island of Ireland, please do get in touch so we can ensure to give you a repeat guest discount. Just remember your last booking number and we will look after you.

Helens Tower is simply fabulous. It is like getting to star in your own personal fairytale for a few days. It looks stunning and is set in a quite remote location up a very long track in a forest. It drips of history and romance and is the ideal location for a special romantic occasion. I asked my partner to marry me on the battlements on a dark winter evening with a lone piper player in the courtyard below and this very unique setting made it, in her own words, “the best day of my entire life.” The interior is period set and is quirky in the most delightful way and the whole experience was greatly enhanced by the manager of the the Tower, Walter, who took the time to meet with me the week before to show me the route to the Tower, show me around and tell me all about the history of the Tower. He was very welcoming, friendly and knowledgeable and is a great asset to the Irish Landmark Trust. If you are looking for an intimate venue for a special occasion, you would be hard pressed to find anywhere more suitable than Helens Tower in the whole of the Emerald Isle!

We had a great time staying in the tower, the modern updates to living quarters were a nice touch to keep you comfortable with the portable heaters, hot water, nice shower and toilet room. Also had a full kitchen suited for any cooking needs. The sitting room with the fireplace and games had the old castle like feel we were looking for. We had an excellent stay.

I stayed at Helen's Tower again for the third time and enjoyed every moment of it, there are a few ways to go for a wander and explore in lovely surroundings. It's also nice to sit on the roof and view scenery for miles around, take your binoculars with you, the tower is well equipped for a stay and when you come back in the evening it's nice to get a good fire going and just relax in the peace and quiet.
I found Walter the caretaker and wife Valerie very helpful and approachable with a welcome.
I hope to stay here again sometime.

We have stayed in a few Landmark Properties and all have been so different. Helens tower was unique the rooms were full of character and history especially the poetry room and the view from the roof terrace was amazing! No good if you can't manage stairs though!
The place was spotless and the House Manager was very helpful, especially when we arrived, without him I don't think we would have found it tucked away in the woods.
I'd certainly recommend it and hope to go back sometime.

Helen's Tower is a fabulous castle in the heart of Clandeboye Estate's forest. We had heard about it and cycled past it a few occasions without realising that you could stay in it. Then we stumbled upon Irish Heritage Trust and managed to get a cancellation for our magical trip. My first surprise was the length of the drive up to the tower from the road. However, this was soon forgotten as we arrived and unpacked into our new home for our two nights, three days. We climbed up and down the windy staircases from floor to floor and to be honest, once we got over the initial shock of having to run from top floor to go to the loo, we were fine.

The first afternoon was stunning sunshine so we went for a cycle ride through the woods (gorgeous), then we invited friends down to enjoy pizza on the roof and wow what a gorgeous night we had with the kids being princesses and princes exploring a real life tower/castle. After a very relaxing night's sleep the following day was misty and wet, so we played games and read books (especially the visitors booked) after a nice slow breakfast. We popped out to reality for a short time (which was spookily weird as we'd only been away for one afternoon and evening). Then it was back to our haven for fish & chips by open, crackling fire and an explore through the wet woodland with our 6 year old, just idyllic and very exciting for her discovering mushrooms, mosses and fairy holes in the trees. We even found a horse shoe in the mud, so that's got to be a perfect sign.

One more sleep before breakfast, a quick clean/pack up and we had to leave around 10am. We were met by the manager and his wife but didn't seem to want to leave as we stood and talked for over half an hour. It was just lovely. We all can't recommend this highly enough as a 'must do' experience. So unique and so unusual, awesome.

Our two days in Helens Tower were really enjoyable. This unique property is cosy and comfortable with great facilities which do not diminish the unique character and ambience of the tower. Two open fires with logs supplied were fantastic even in June. The sitting room in the evening was just beautiful in the lamplight. The bedroom was warm and cosy and the kitchen very well equipped. Walter was an excellent host and full of useful information for us.

We stayed for three nights at Helen's Tower and had an amazing time. I loved the sense of history and charm the tower evoked. It truly felt like staying in a castle in the middle of the woods! The views were amazing. The open fires, all wonderfully set by Walter, made the characterful rooms so cosy. We had sun, rain, howling wind and snow flurries all viewed from the pretty windows on all sides of the tower. It was a perfect chance to truly unwind and chill and catch up on lots of reading ( and a game of scrabble or two ). Everything was exceptionally clean and the bed so comfy. Would love to return. We spent a fantastic weekend in Helen's Tower in February 2017. The pictures don't have half attest to the beauty of the tower and surrounding environs - really needs to be experienced to be believed. Personally, I've always I felt I was born into a strata of class several tiers too low, so I spent the weekend stomping about the turreted staircase shouting vaguely obnoxious kingly demands and obscenities. No one of course heeded my requests nor paid no mind, though I can assure you that if they had, my first order of business would have been a swift replacement of my travelling companion , who for whatever reason was less than enamoured with my carry on.

Walter, the caretaker, is accommodating and helpful and provides a great rundown on the history of the tower and estate (Frederick's life certainly warrants even the briefest of studies - a life well lived).

Bring enough food, booze, books, movie downloads for your stay and your all set for a great break. Recommended.

We really enjoyed our short stay in Helens Tower. I loved the location and the reading and poetry rooms. It is a great place to relax and completely switch off. Unfortunately we had to cut our stay short due to illness in the family but hope to come back again.

What could be more romantic than staying in a tower on a hill in the middle of a forest? Everything about staying at Helen's Tower is amazing - from Walter's hospitality, the drive up through the woods, the cozy rooms to the magnificent views. We love it. This was our second stay. We will be back again soon.

Helen's tower is just a fantastic, it is a rarity which is not to be missed. If you want peace and quiet, restfulness and to enjoy nature, this is the place to go.

The tower itself has been tastefully improved to add some modern conveniences while keeping the original old world feel. It is hard to describe, it must be experienced. The stunning scenery, particularly form your exclusive rooftop. The amazing natural beauty of the huge unspoiled estate, with swans on the lake and squirrels in the trees. The quietness of the location, beautiful crackling of the open wood fire with the lovely smell of the wood.

There are plenty of people hiking and off-road biking during the day, everyone we met was friendly and polite. We had a wonderful time and wished we could stay longer.

Bring plenty of supplies because you wont want to leave.

After years of visiting old castles and ruins with circular stone stair cases, it was quite a treat to stay in one! Helen's Tower is an amazing building and a beautiful blend of old world feel with modernized facilities. The sitting rooms are magical and the view of the territory from the top is breathtaking.

Helen's tower is a lovely place to stay particularly in the Autumn with leaves turning yellow, brown and gold. Good for walking but a good map would be useful.
Everything else was supplied and Property Manager was very helpful.
Details of how to recycle locally would be useful.

A bit of a difficult drive especially in a rental car that you don't want to scratch and would be near impossible in heavy rain. The tower is lots of fun but in need of some extra comforts. Perhaps a newer bed and a sofa as well. Otherwise it has an efficent kitchen and is well equipped. Shower is a little spotty for hot temperatures

We truly had an excellent time at Helen's Tower.
When we dragged ourselves away from the magical tower, we visited Belfast, Helen's Bay and enjoyed getting lost in the surrounding woods.
We look forward to another visit in the new year.

We stayed for 3 nights in October 2016 and loved it. Relaxing in front of the fire playing monopoly was exactly what we needed. I would not recommend to persons with mobility issues due to the stairs and if you're very tall then you'll find the shower a tight fit. Seeing the deer in the woods and having swans as neighbours was wonderful. We ate locally and would recommend the Cock and Bull. The path that leads up to the tower is used by the public so there will be people about during the day. Overall we loved it and will definitely be back. Thanks to Walter for his help too.

I stayed again at helens tower and very much enjoyed it, I found it relaxing and peaceful with lovely scenery and a few walks around. It was also nice to sit at the fire in the evening and listen to the radio and get away from the usual same old same old.
Walter the house keeper was helpful and a great welcome and offered any assistance that may be needed.
I would like to stay here again sometime.

Booking through the website was not straightforward due to question marks over availability, even though we made our booking enquiry almost a year in advance. Thanks go to Irene at ILT to enabling us to book some of the dates we requested. Thanks also to Water the 'tower keeper' for his flexibility and warm welcome.

It is to be expected that a Landmark Trust building is special in its own way and Helen's Tower was certainly distinctive, with a lovely secluded position, interesting rooms and great views from the roof (weather permitting).

Some of the quirks of the building are to be expected and enjoyed, but having stayed at other Landmark properties in England and Wales I felt the standard of the accommodation fell short what I would expect. The shower/bath facility was poor, the sofa bed which doubled as the only comfortable seating for reading/relaxing was not particularly comfortable for a long session with a good book and the use of polycotton bed linen is, for me, a minus.

Whilst I would recommend the property to people seeking to book a romantic hideaway and we enjoyed our three nights there, I was glad that we had not been able to book for the whole week as originally planned.

If you want peace, time to reflect, or to enjoy another's company in beautiful surroundings then this is the place for you. The tower is certainly isolated and you would need a car if you wanted to explore the surrounding areas. Also the tower will keep you fit as each room is on a different level and accessed by a stone spiral stairway. My friend absolutely loved it. We had three beautiful days of sunshine, so the views from the rooftop were stunning. The tower is a popular meeting point for mountain bikers and walkers but they do not have access to the courtyard surrounding the tower, so once the gate is locked no one can access the tower. We certainly felt safe and secure.

Helen's Tower is well off the main road, although that does not prevent bicyclists and hikers from coming to see it in relatively large numbers. The bedroom and bathroom areas are not particularly large nor does the bedroom have a good view. The kitchen is spacious and well-equipped. But the real treat are the two rooms above this and the roof terrace. Very fine Victorian High Gothic architecture competes here with outstanding views. There are also plenty of books and board games, and the fires are left ready to be lit, although the fact that they smell slightly smoky suggests possible problems with the chimney. The staircase also shows traces of damp.

An excellent long weekend spent at Helen's Tower. Fantastic views of Scotland, the Glens of Antrim, the Mountains of Mourne, and Co. Down from the roof. The fireplaces are very romantic, and the rooms are quite cozy and comfortable. Although remote, this is well worth it if you can find your way into and out of the Tower! Thanks to ILT and Walter Corr.

Thoroughly enjoyed 2 nights away at Helen's Tower. Walter met us with the key, showed us around the tower and gave us a little history about the place.

Tower is in a lovey location, surrounded by woodland and amazing views - we were blessed with the weather! Decided to eat in both nights as wanted to make the most of it and great to be able to use the fire and relax.

Felt like we got away from everything at the weekend - great to have no tv or wifi for a change. Visited Mount Stewart one day and the transport museum the next.

Would definitely recommend it as a place to stay. Thank you.

An absolutely beautiful location in which to propose to my girlfriend, now fiance, while on the roof sharing some banter and learning the magificent views we saw some lovely red squirrels happy in the trees. A truly unique experience and location to get away from all the noise and distraction of modern life, no cars, no tv and with a bit of willpower no mobile phones.

I booked this weekend away as a surprise for Valentines weekend. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The welcome was impeccable and relaxed (even fun). The drive up made me glad I hadn't washed my car before hand, but the reaction from my other half more than made up for it!
The place is essentially some amazing and quirky rooms, joined by a freezing spiral staircase. But the open fires and views made up for that small minus point.
We had intended as using it as a base to explore from, but enjoyed the building so much, we barely ventured out.
I don't want to recommend it too much, incase they raise the prices and make it more expensive for our inevitable return visit.
It's quirky and not for the frail, but we loved it. Fingers crossed we win the lottery and can buy it!!

As repeat visitors, our summary is short and simple. We love the peace and quiet of Helen's tower and the views are unbelievable. It's an ideal get-away (we come from Bonn, Germany) to a truly unique property. Most of our time was spent reading in front of the fire and enjoying self-catered meals in the castle, and sunsets from the roof-top. The care-taker, Walt (& his lovely wife), are truly amazing - A genuinely happy and cheerful couple! Book early and don't miss the chance to stay here. We will be back.

Helen's Tower is one of the best places we stayed in! What a lovely place.
Excellent views, especially from the poetry room.
The entire building is wonderfully restored with amazing attention to detail.
We were glad that Walter showed us the way up the hill because we arrived late in the middle of the night after heavy rainfalls.

Also, the yoghurt in the fridge was a nice touch - thanks Walter!

You can actually have the entire tower of your own! what can I say more!

We arrived quite late at night so the brilliant housekeeper guided us through the wood (both in our own cars). The setting is great, you have to drive through the wood for 10mins in the very bumpy road. It does give you a very remote castle feeling.

The castle is quite cold and does suffer from damp issue. However, with heaters and the real working fireplaces, you will make yourself comfortably settling in the extraordinary place.

Highly recommended!

Helen's tower is in a great location. Close enough to Belfast and Bangor for any essentials but once you are at the tower you feel like you have stepped back in time and you are removed from the modern world with only the radio for company. The views from the roof are fantastic and you feel like you are king of your castle. Everything you need is there and it is a great opportunity to stay in a truly historic building. Having visited many castles in Scotland it felt like you had been left in after closing. With that though you have to remember that it is an old building and may have a few issues like uneven steps or a drip or two and forgive these minor inconveniences.

We were made very welcome by House Manager,Walter, who brought us through the woods to the Tower.
Because of the very wet conditions of the past week the track was very mucky and could be challenging for a small low car.
The Tower was warm on arrival and,due to the weather conditions, additional heat was required using the convector heaters provided.Open fires had been set in the Dining and Poetry Rooms. We were happy to use the magnificently decorated Dining Room only. The Poetry Room would have been too hard to heat sufficiently as there is no storage heater here.
This was our second visit and really enjoyed our time despite the weather conditions.

Helen's Tower is a winner all around.

My fiancee Helen and I stayed for two wonderful nights in Helen's Tower. The location on a wooded hilltop with stunning views in both daytime and nighttime was perfect for getting away from it all. The weather was wet and windy but it only added to the pleasure of being protected inside in front of a blazing wood fire. The time flew and was really too short. Another visit is a must. Well done to the Irish Landmark Trust and especially to Walter for helping out with the surprise for Helen.

...to have this tower as a home for a few days. The drive up the beautiful, winding little road may make you feel as if you ought to leave a trail of breadcrumbs, and that is only the first of many pleasures. The tower is comfortably, tastefully furnished and very pretty. The long, lovely nights are perfectly peaceful. It is especially nice to be met by Walter and properly introduced to the building and its' surrounds. Our time there has been the best part of a very happy visit to Ireland.

Helen's Tower is in a beautiful forest park and has been sensitively modified to provide excellent accommodation.
The surrounding area has plenty of attractions: Mount Stewart and Castle Ward being two of the best.

Helen's Tower is a very special place. Its worth the money for the drive up from the gatehouse to the tower door alone. I booked myself and my boyfriend in for the weekend as a late birthday present ( major brownie points) needless to say he was delighted, We are both history/historical fiction nerds and the tower is steeped in history. The bedroom is perfect in size and well stocked with towels, bath, shower and loo all just off the bedroom. The kitchen has everything you will need, iron, crockery, cutlery, cleaning products. Both sitting rooms were beautiful but the lower one was our favourite as it has an antique couch, boardgames, the visitors book etc. we sat in there on the Friday night with snacks, a bottle of red and the crossaire. bliss. The roof top is the cherry on top of a very serious cake.

Logistically the Castle is very well situated, it has a 3km driveway! but once you exit the gate you can be at Crawfordsburn train station in 7-10 minutes where there is ample parking and a very regular train service into Belfast which takes under 20 mins. We spent Saturday and Sunday afternoons site seeing in the city, we did end up curtailing city plans in favor of a cosy night back at the castle. My only regret is that we didnt spend enough time exploring the grounds, next time we will bring our mountain bikes and run the trails on the surrounding land so when you do stay here, set aside at least a half day to spend in the castle and the grounds.

I cant recommend this magical place highly enough, many thanks to Walter who still seemed as enamoured with the place as we were after a year of care taking the property. He and his wife were extremely accommodating offering advice on sites to see, places to eat and they left the gorgeous Clandeboye yoghurts in the fridge for us which we ate on the roof in the sunshine with a glass of wine!

I tip my cap to the Irish Landmark Trust, Helen's Tower is a gem.

Many thanks,
Claire.

A warm welcome from Walter,he is extremely helpful. The tower is wonderful, a total delight in every room. We saw a jay, deer and a red squirrel all within 100 of the tower. The views from the roof, sunsets, sunrises, moon and stars are magical. A real privilege to stay in this special place.
My only suggestions for improvements are a bigger fridge and some placemats to save the kitchen tablecloth. And my tip for visitors would be to drive something with robust suspension, the drive up is very rough in places. A wonderful, secluded place to stay - we absolutely loved it.

We stayed at Helen's Tower for two nights on our Irish honeymoon. It was an unforgettable experience! I will always remember the excitement of driving up to the tower and standing below it, knowing we would be staying inside. Although it is an old tower, it maintains its historic charm without being rustic and has lots of amenities including hot water, a washing machine and microwave. Walter, the caretaker, was very pleasant and helpful. A wonderful experience and highly recommended!

Enjoyed the stay, Walter was very good in meeting us on the Friday night and taking us over to the tower. Enjoyed the open fire, which we used on one of the nights.

Great Location. Amazingly romantic, very special, unique place to stay.
Walter was very funny and perfect Irish host!
Amazing décor, wonderful view from the top and out of all the windows - just perfect.
The only thing I would add would be big thick fluffy bath sheet towels and Molton Brown or Evelyn & Crabtree liquid soaps to make it feel like real luxury staying there.

The Land Mark Trust's staff were most accommodating and responsive to our changing needs and even helped us reschedule a booking due to a family emergency. The care taker, Walter and his wife, were superb in their duties and very friendly. Our stay was better than words can describe and trying to do so would only belabor the point. Previous reviews commented on occasional mountain biker noise and you should expect it. However, it was not bothersome or unusually loud. Also, don't be surprised when hikers-by, on the local trails, stop to marvel at the site and to take pictures. It makes sense when you put it into perspective. Do close and lock the driveway gate to prevent natural curiosity from getting to people. The only downside to our stay was that we didn't stay long enough. Three nights was too short for us - Helen's Tower is a place to check off the grid and really unwind. On that note, 3G cell coverage was adequate and allowed for a personal hotspot and internet - ha ha. We are expats living in Germany and we will be back soon. This place is too good not to come back to! Book early, the calendar is full and the guest book in the tower is even fuller. Helen's Tower is a highly recommended experience. Jeff & Kamolmal S. Our two night stay in Helen's Tower was memorable...for good reasons. It is an interesting place, with wonderful views over the landscape and sea scape. It is also within easy reach of gardens and other interesting places such as Mount Stewart and of Belfast itself. The sense of history and culture with a human face was all around us. The most daunting feature was the 2.2 km winding forest road to gain access. On first arrival it felt very remote and inaccessible. However with practice the drive became more 'ordinary' and it is an ideal place of retreat, though the madding crowd may be likely to invade one's quiet in the form of strollers and bikers!
Inside we had everything we needed. The building is tastefully decorated at all levels and all our comforts were catered for. The place was spotless throughout, obviously very well looked after and prepared for our visit. It was a relief to find the bedroom and bathrooms on the ground floor! The log-filled grates ready for lighting were a welcome sight particularly on an evening recovering from an afternoon of monsoon-like torrents. We were warmly welcomed, shown around and bidden farewell two mornings later by Mr Corr.
Yes, I would recommend a stay there, provided one has no fear of high hilltop buildings!

Unique place that leaves a long imprint in your memory. Living in your own castle with stunning views over the whole of Northern Ireland. Surrounded by a forest at the top of a hill. Each floor has a special character. A secluded bedroom, a well equipped kitchen, a cosy sitting room, a wood panelled poetry room and a rooftop picnic space. Wonderful.

This was our second visit to Helen's Tower, after been here in January this year.

The warmer weather made it an better stay this time around, as we were able to relax and enjoy the views from the roof terrace.

We were also very lucky to have a clear sky on the last night letting us spend a couple of hours on the roof watching the meteor shower, which was a great experience.

One of our favourite places to stay. Walter and Valerie are very friendly and welcoming, and we're already looking forward to our next visit.

We had an amazing time at Helen's Tower! The setting is so picturesque and the tower itself retains all the character of the past while having all the modern conveniences required (TV and wifi are not requirements!!) Walter is a fantastic host and with Valerie, they have kept all the rooms in immaculate condition. Helen's Tower is an ideal escape for a peaceful and relaxing break away!

Our stay at Helen's Tower couldn't have been any more perfect: wonderful weather to accompany the most wonderful location. The quirkiness of the place provides a welcome change from staying at traditional self-catering apartments. The peaceful and quiet environment is the best anti-stress medicine: walking in the woods during the day; a glass of wine, a good book and Classic FM on the radio while sitting by the fireplace in the evening time... and star gazing from the top of the tower after midnight... It doesn't get better than that!!! Definitely, we will be back soon and will try booking other Irish Landmarks Trust properties in the meantime.

My wife and I have stayed at Helen's Tower nearly 30 times now since it first opened . It is a magical place set up deep in the woods . For the price of a B & B you get five floors of history to yourself with beautifully decorated rooms and open fires and a roof terrace with panoramic views down over Strangford Lough and back up towards the Gobbins . The fact we have stayed so many times should give an indication to how much we love the place . However Helen's Tower is not for everyone , its location which is magical to some would be considered isolated to others as it is deep in the woods and accessed via an estate road which some might consider rough . The bedroom is snug , the shower power is virtually non-existent and when it rains, and it does rain in North Down, water drips into the spiral staircase (Not the main rooms) . All that said we will be returning in August . My advice is bring the little extra luxuries with you , big towels , feather pillows , candles and champagne and settle in front of a roaring in the sitting room - hard to beat ! I am not surprised the number of proposals appear to have been made here and if the visitors book is anything to go by they all said yes !

Bookings Officer replied more than 1 year ago
Thank you for your wonderful notes about staying at Helen's Tower. I do wish to address 1 item if I may - due to fire and safety regulations candles are NOT permitted at any Irish Landmark Trust property. Big pillows and champagne are more then welcome but I am afraid candles are not allowed. Helen's Tower is a wonderful property and its fantastic romantic setting does mean we have many a proposal here. (Please do contact the bookings office at [email protected] for any further information you may require). Looking forward to welcoming you back to stay in August.

A perfect place to stay.

Helens Tower is everything you would expect it to be. Fantastic location way off the beaten track. For somewhere so potentially inaccessible the access road was very well maintained as was the building itself. No Gotchas with this one, the photos and description are spot on. Walter and Valerie do an excellent job of looking after both the tower and it's guests.
The only criticism I have is that, during periods of wild weather some of the windows could do with better draught proofing.
Still, that aside I would recommend this landmark without hesitation.

Had a fantastic weekend at Helen's Tower. The building is beautiful and we saw as far as Scotland from the roof! It's very easy to find from Belfast so we spent some time there at the weekend also. Walter and Valerie were excellent guides to the building and it's surrounding views. What a way to spend a weekend - in one's own mini castle with opens fires and deer running ahead of the car as you drive in. Well worth a stay if you like something out of the ordinary.

Hi,

Had a two night weekend stay as a surprise get-away. Fantastic location in heart of woodland. Tower is a great novelty. The atmosphere in the tower is warm and welcoming, and the amenities are very good. Note that the bath is a half-size sit-in affair.

I would stay again, and recommend this to others looking for a short break.

Helen's Tower was an absolute delight to stay in, it was a really unique surprise retreat for a few days! The overall condition of the tower is amazing, with a good feeling of what the tower must've originally been like, yet with the added comforts of things like a washing machine, toaster, microwave etc. We stayed during some cold December days and nights, and the tower does quickly get cold, however the heaters provided and the fires we made quickly warmed up the rooms. The bedroom was especially warm and cosy and the bed was extremely comfortable! The woods surrounding the tower were great to explore, we decided to use our bikes, which was a very enjoyable way to navigate around the area. Walter was extremely helpful and really nice, and we appreciated the Clandeboye yoghurts he gave us, it was a really nice touch. Overall this was a fantastic stay in a fantastic location and would definitely recommend it to anyone.

Helen's tower was our first experience with the irish landmark trust, and we will definitely use them again. An incredible place, luxurious yet historic, it made for a very special and memorable weekend. Curling up in front of a roaring fire in that decadent living room, while November winds howl around the walls of your very own tower, is something I will never forget !

We had a fantastic stay in Helen's Tower last weekend. The location was truly spectacular, the Tower was amazing. The views are stunning. We saw fallow deer and swans before we left. Amazing place nature for photographic enthusiasts. Cannot wait to book another stay in this beautiful property.

A wonderful autumnal break in the forest. Incredible views from the roof and the poets room. 2 km along the forest road to the top of the hill, cozy kitchen and sitting room with a great fireplace and supplies of fire wood. As ever the Landmark Trust gives us a opportunity to stay is great properties and locations. Already planning the next trip.

We had a warm welcome from Walter, Helens tower was prepared and ready for our 10th wedding anniversary.
The fires were set and there was a homely feel to the place.
The views from the rooftop ramparts were stunning, looking out over the tree top canopy to Belfast Lough in one direction and Strangford Lough in the other.
Well done to the Landmark Trust and thank you to Lady Duffern for sharing this unique location.

Thoroughly enjoyed my stay at Helens Tower, historic, atmospheric and romantic.
Great place for a getaway experience with a difference,
close to great shopping, eating out and sight seeing.
A very warm welcome from Valerie and Walter whose knowledge was very valuable.
Comfortable and clean with a lovely open fire.
I hope to return again, great to see it being used.

We visited Helen's Tower for just two nights and wished we could have stayed longer. The property is hidden away in a beautiful forest off Estate Road. Gate to door is over a mile! As a result, the property is quiet and peaceful, except for the occasional laugh from the trail bikers using the forest. Facilities are excellent for this type of property - open fires, storage heaters, well-appointed kitchen etc. The property is huge for two people - but the bathroom facilities may limit having more guests, since they're ensuite (tough break, huh?!). The Poetry Room is outstanding - a beautiful paneled room with beautiful views and a number of little nooks to hide away with a good book. The roof terrace is the cherry on the cake - AMAZING views across the local area and the perfect spot for some breakfast before you head off exploring. Can't wait to make a return visit.

We stayed here for my boyfriend's birthday, the rooftop was my favourite with the amazing views it provides! A few steps to climb to get to it but it was definitely worth it:-) it was well furnished & had everything we needed, I appreciated that the fires were already stacked all we had to do was light one for a lovely romantic night in;-)

What a fantastic property! The location is wonderful and we enjoyed the many walks through the woods from the tower.
The tower itself is a unique place, warm and well equipped although there an awful lot of stairs! However it was worth the climb to the top for the panoramic views.
It's in an ideal location to visit Belfast, Ards and the loughs and we'll definitely be back. Thank you!

On arrival, we quickly realised that Helen's Tower was a very special place indeed. It has a presence, all of its own, which was both welcoming and relaxing. It's location in the middle of the woods, on top of a hill really sets it apart as something special, and during our stay, it certainly lived up to this expectation. We hope to return again in the not too distant future and recapture some of the very special moments spent in this Tower.

I stayed in Helen's tower for two nights and enjoyed it. It has a good kitchen, bright and comfortable rooms, good views from the roof, a comfortable bed. It is also cosy to sit by the fire at night and during the day there are various walks, it's also easy to get between Bangor and Newtownards on the bus from here.
I would like to stay here again sometime.

Superb place in a magical location. Would love to return some day. The estate is vast and the walks were stunning. I'm sorry I didn't bring my bike as it's a bikers paradise with some really nice Forest and single tracks.
Wi Fi not working which wasn't a big deal but worth mentioning.

Great private castle complete with nice long windy road and views out to the water. Tastefully/authentically decorated, except for maybe the bedroom, which is still really nice. Only drawback is that there were a pretty constant stream of mountain bikers coming by to check the place out. Other than that, really fun!!

A very unique experience in a wonderful location. Ideal for a quite and romantic getaway with beautiful surroundings and a magical building. Don't expect 5* luxury as this is an old building but it it quite comfortable. A vast woodland to explore filled with wildlife with a noticable quantity of deer. Stunning views from the top of the tower. Expect a lot of cyclists and walkers stopping to view the building. Lots of books and board games available and nice cosy fires.

Helen's Tower was an amazing break away from it all; a beautiful building set in a quiet and relatively isolated spot. As other reviewers have said it's well away from the main road so it pays to bring everything you need and not have to hop in the car to get some milk or food as much as you can. Although its an old building it's well restored, totally unique and definitely a change from staying in a hotel. We had time to relax and have time to ourselves to just enjoy pottering around doing nothing in particular. In saying that there is a lot to keep you occupied in the area. We spent time in Bangor on one day and Belfast the next day we were there, and didn't get to see as much as we would have liked so when we go again we intend to spend much more than 2 nights to be able to really see everything the area has to offer. Wandering around the Clandeboye Estate itself would easily fill a day.

The estate is well used by walkers and cyclists with trails and tracks leading up to and around the tower. I wouldn't want this to sound as a criticism as it actually lent to the atmosphere of the place and it is a local landmark which generates some interest but on both days groups of cyclists opened the gates and let themselves into the fenced off area around the tower, with one group even opening the front door while we were upstairs to look around the ground floor so if you are in the building I would suggest you lock the door - there are a lot of stairs to go up and down to check out what's happening!

Overall it was a great weekend, luckily the weather was fantastic for us, the tower is well kitted out so was very comfortable, and we intend to stay again for a bit longer and would recommend others do too.

Whilst we enjoyed the beauty of the tower and the authentic manner in which it was restored unfortunately on the Saturday night of our stay our car was badly vandalised whilst parked outside the tower at approximately 10pm.The location of the tower is very isolated with just a rough road up to it (1.3miles).however it is surrounded by forest that has public access via rough paths.Near the entrance to the tower there is a derelict shed that is covered in broken glass bottles.I think to maintain the uniqueness of this location ,there would have to be added security. We weren't particularly impressed with the Irish Landmark Trusts response to our issue.I would have expected at the very least a courtesy call. They only responded after I first emailed then rang them. They did offer a small voucher but the main thing I wanted was an assurance that the security issues would be addressed.

We thoroughly enjoyed our two night stay at Helen's Tower and were particularly impressed with the housekeeper's willingness to facilitate an earlier arrival time. Flicking through the books in the lounge with a glass of red wine in front of an open fire was sheer bliss. We also really enjoyed walking across to the Somme Heritage Centre to learn more about the replica tower at Thiepval, and took the opportunity the next day to walk in the opposite direction along the Clandeboye Way to Helen's Bay (and back!). It was nice to get away from televisions for a while and just listen to the radio.

I visited Helen's Tower over 30 years ago to do some abseiling so it was very interesting to return there to see the fine restoration work and to 'live' there for a few days. My partner had walked passed Helen's Tower as a teenager and was delighted to be staying there in her 'later years'

My Wife and I decided to book Helen's Tower for a two night stay in February.
The drive into the tower was through the woods- although bumpy, was unique.
The tower itself was amazing, open fires the communal areas and electric heating in bedroom.
The view was perfect. If the weather was a little better, we would have done more walking but visiting the local museums and attractions was great.

We would definitely recommend it to others.

In summary, amazing experience. We loved the tower, just like out of a fairytale indeed! Helen's tower is situated in picturesque countryside and steeped in History. The rooms were amazing and the views from the top were breath-taking. As weather was not great unfortunately there were lots of water-filled potholes on the lane up to the Tower which could do with a little reinforcement. No other issues and the perfect place for a romantic retreat!

We had a fantastic couple of nights. Helen's Tower is such a unique experience and despite being November it was a cosy venue with the open fires. Well worth going to for a special occasion. Helen"s Tower is a unique and fascinating building which has been tastefully converted into self catering accommodation for two people. We enjoyed our stay there, but it would have been helpful to have a map of the estate so as to explore the wooded grounds on foot - suggested walks on the estate would have been useful. The atmosphere was somewhat spoilt by the tower being surrounded by a barbed wire fence and a locked gate, but maybe this is for security reasons.

wow, where do I start? We decided that we'd like to make Christmas 2013 extra special and after a chance meeting at a party we were told of the Irish Landmark Trust. Viewing all the properties online got us really excited.

We stayed for 5 nights and had the family over for Christmas dinner, a extra special touch was the real Christmas tree in the poetry room. The kitchen had all the mod cons needed to cook up a full Christmas dinner.

Set in the magical Clandyboye estate the drive up to the tower was enchanting with a lovely lake, swans and a forest. I'd definitely recommend staying here - but book early.

Well, historically, it might be Helen's Tower but we considered it ours for the 3 fabulous nights we were there...what an amazing place to stay. We enjoyed all 5 levels of the tower, took a million photos and really didn't want to leave! But we managed to drag ourselves away to lovely Belfast each day, about a 1/2 hour drive away. While there are obviously steps to climb to each level, this was fine for us...it was such a warm and comfortable tower with everything we needed. The heating and lighting were great, the kitchen was well equipped, the lounge and games room were great and the views from the roof and all windows outstanding. This was a great experience and we'd certainly do it again...thanks to Shirley and the Irish Landmark Trust.

It was a fantastic place to stay in winter time. The long drive from the main road in the dark through a leafless forrest was quite spooky and added to the mood perfectly. When finally the tower reveals itself it's like something from a Hammer movie. It was really atmospheric. The surroundings are great for daytime walks and you are just a stones throw from teh lovely little town of bangor.
