This large family house has everything you need for a cosy and comfortable family holiday. Huge lounge with an open fire was a real treat in the evenings. Well equipped family kitchen and comfortable bedrooms.
Location next to Ardmaddy Castle is just stunning. Remote and quiet…. It’s a hidden gem in Argyll!

This was our second stay at The Stables. We love the location and the layout of the accommodation. Being by the loch brings such benefits and the hire of one of Mr Struther’s boats was a huge bonus. We had a problem with the oven door which once reported, was fixed the next day. The double room had a strange smell but the bds were very comfortable. We will be back in a few years for our big birthdays. Thank you for a wonderful holiday!

This is our second visit to The Stables and it won’t be our last. Set in a peaceful location virtually on the shore it provides everything you need for a relaxing break. Top quality linen is provided and plenty of crockery etc to make this almost a home from home. Food bowls, balls and towels also provided for dogs. There are lots of walks to explore the estate and the sunset views from French windows are sublime. The log fire is especially welcome on cooler evenings.

We took our two teenage sons and 2 of their friends away for a week. The stables were excellent, a sensibly and very well equipped kitchen, BBQ and plenty of space served us very well. The boys enjoyed the games room, fishing in the loch and cycling the quiet, safe roads. Oban is a short drive with shops that can supply all you’ll need. The weather was stunning, but you might not be so lucky!

Beautiful location, right beside the water. Although the weather wasn't great, there were plenty of places nearby to go to.
Plenty of walks when it wasn't raining. Plenty of foot paths to go off and explore the estate. Also venturing up to the castle gardens, which were very well kept, with a number of different flowers etc.

The house it's self was immaculate. It had everything that we needed. Beds very comfortable, bed linen very good quality. The house was very spacious. The men enjoyed hiding away in the games room upstairs, Which included a pool table and a ping-pong table.

A lovely family holiday enjoyed by all.
Thank you.

This is our third stay at The Stables. Each one has been a joy. The location by Ardmaddy Bay feels remote and utterly peaceful, yet the amenities and bustle of Oban are only 25 minutes away. The cottage is cosy, warm, dry - the latter not a given for accommodation in this part of the world - and the whole estate has a loved and cared-for feel without being overmanaged. There's plenty of outdoor activities nearby if you don't just want to hole up for a week and ignore the world, including sea safaris at Ellenabeich, extensive walks across the surrounding hills of the estate, and the beautiful castle gardens 5 minutes walk away, open for charity. Highly recommend and hope to return soon.

The Stables is an excellent place to stay , very comfortable , in beautiful surroundings. A visit to the Castle Gardens is highly recommended as are walks on the estate. You feel like you are in the middle of nowhere but there are plenty places to visit nearby eg Seil , Easdale & Luing Islands. Oban is only 12 miles away. This was my 2nd visit to Ardmaddy with my whole family & we will be returning again

Wonderful location with fantastic views. Garden while enclosed was not secure but beautifully maintained. Cottage supplied with everything you could need including dog bowls, toys and towels. Kitchen well equipped. Lounge area large and comfortable with lovely fireplace and free logs. Beds were very comfortable and again well-equipped. The two bathrooms were immaculate. Information provided was helpful with regards to walks, areas to avoid and for planning trips. Games room was a great addition.

This is the third visit to the Estate, where a group of friends use the accommodation as a base. We previously have used Caddleton, which was excellent for our needs accommodating an all adult group. Although the Stables was up to the Estates excellent standard, the bunk room is more suited for the use by children, not adults, which spoiled the stay for a number of our group. Overall an amazing place to use as a base to sea kayak from, with lots of trip options that did not require the use of vehicles.

A cracking week to be repeated.

I can best start this review by saying that watching otters fishing in Ardmaddy bay in front of the Stables was a complete joy. As were the pair of Golden Eagles that swung over the house on two days of our trip to the Stables. The house itself is as comfortable and as well equipped as anyone would want, and in this digital age, the internet works better than at home. We were there in March and so heating and drying clothes was important - that was achieved with ease. I could bang on about how everything was properly done and properly working - but that would be too much detail.

There is much to do and see in the area, and Oban is very well equipped to deal with all catering requirements.

All in all, I am happy to say that this house and the stay came in the top flight of many stays in holiday accomodation across the years and the UK.

The Stables are remote and have wonderful views, We are really missing looking out over the bay at the sunsets and seeing the stars without light pollution, its an amazing quiet spot with only the sound of the wildlife and the occasional passing of the game keepers ATV, those we bumped into from The Estate were warm and friendly.
The Cottage is well appointed, comfortable and is country cottage, we enjoyed our open fires at night, We would certainly visit again

Comfy beds, big towels, well equipped kitchen and very clean throughout

Plenty of hot water. Plenty of parking. Could do with TV instructions for the elderly!!

Oven door won’t stay open on its own someone else has to hold it. More G & T glasses needed!

Fantastic stay, wonderful views and lovely to meet up with Jan and Duncan. We learnt a lot about wildlife from Duncan. Had excellent views of otters and white tailed eagles. Sunsets viewed from the cottage were spectacular.

A wonderful holiday cottage in a stunning location. The cottage is clean, spacious and well equipped. It has you need and more for a lovely holiday. The location is what for me makes this place so special. The website photos do not do it justice. Great wildlife- we spotted seals, otters and eagles.

A great house in a fantastic location.

We all really enjoyed the gorgeous views and the wildlife. Various wading birds within view of the house plus red squirrel, deer, golden eagle, sea eagle and otters all seen within an hours walk. A beautiful area and not just the grounds of Ardmaddy, many lovely locations such as Easdale and Oban within a short drive.

We also rented a boat for the week to explore the bay, which was great fun.

The house was ideal, plenty big enough for the 6 of us. Well equipped and clean with a log fire for relaxing in front of in the evening, plus the games room for when there was a bit more energy. We didnt switch the TV on all week, there is no mobile signal however the wifi was good enough to keep everyone happy with keeping up to date on essentials.
Very friendly owners and staff on the estate, excellent communication before and during our stay.

Certainly the best holiday of its type we have had in a long time.

What can we say other than excellent service and perfect accommodation. The cottage was spotlessly clean, everything you need for a perfect stay was in place. The location and views stunning, beautiful cycling routes and walking opportunities. The seafood we purchased in Oban was super fresh cooked back at the cottage. We fell in love with the Scottish Highlands as a result of our visit. We have already booked a two week return for next year. We recommend hiring one of Charles’ boats for mackerel fishing in the bay. The castle gardens are beautiful and the walks in the hills beyond the castle a must. Our little Border Terrier was in heaven with the space and shoreline walking. Our only issue was no cover from the rain for our e-bikes, easily resolved by purchasing waterproof covers for next year. Jan greeted us personally on arrival, her attention to detail exceptional down to little vases of wild flowers in the cottage. We would highly recommend a stay at Ardmaddy, and if you’ve never been to the Scottish Highlands before this is the place to go!

The area has so much to do walking boating lovely gardens especially the Castle garden. Golf and 3 places to eat on Seil. We enjoyed the whirlpool trip by Sea Safari the wildlife, Crinnon Canal and the trip to and fabulous rail journey from Fort William to Mallaig as well as the ferry for a day on Mull.

The accommodation , facilities and overall standard of comfort is first class I would have no hesitation in recommending The Stables to anyone. The only slight drawback was that I was told twice while on the phone to pick up the keys at the castle but when we tried to do this I was told that I could not have been told this I must have read it on outdated information sheet. No I was told while on the phone. But that is bye the bye our stay was wonderful.5 stars from me.

My friend and I stayed in The Stables for a week from the 27th of September, and we were both delighted with everything about it ... from the friendly welcome by Jan (and the much-appreciated shortbread biscuits) to the day we (sorrowfully) left, we loved it all. The cottage is in such a beautiful location that we spent most of our time there and only ventured out to restock groceries, buy a ferry ticket, enjoy a day-trip to Mull and briefly explore Seil. Apart from that we were happy to relax, watch the changing light on the bay, explore the estate and generally disconnect from the real world for a week. Perfect.

We have had a wonderful week here at The Stables, home from home well appointed and spotlessly clean.
Upon arrival we were welcomed with a tea tray & shortbread with fresh flowers in the lounge and dining area.
Relaxing and tranquil with wonderful views.
Hector our boxer thinks this was some kind of canine heaven, with all the different walks.
The Castle Gardens are wonderful, especially at this time of year with rhododendrons & bluebells a truly magical sight.
A big thank you to Jan and team for making us feel so very welcome.
Looking forward to our next visit in September.

We loved staying in the stables. We had everything we needed in a beautiful location. The views from the house, especially the sunsets over the loch were wonderful. The house was well stocked with everything we needed. The beds were comfortable and we enjoyed using the table tennis table and pool table. There are several good walks from the cottage and information was provided on those along with other useful info on the area. Would love to go back!

This house sits by the sea loch with woods behind at the end of a private road. It is quiet, and surrounded by birdsong. You can walk down to the water easily from the house and ramble around the estate e.g. visiting the castle gardens. The house itself is all on one level (apart from the games room upstairs which is also the location of the tumble dryer). There is easy access through the garden doors via a ramp, and one step into the house from the back entrance.

The house is a conversion of old stables, with carpets throughout and a comfortable mix of older and newer furniture. There are plenty of sofas and chairs. There is a shower room with loo (electric shower so slightly feeble) and an additional bathroom with over bath shower (good, hot, copious). There is an open-plan kitchen/living area with a wood fire (which burns very well and is easy to light). There is a good sized dining table and the kitchen has everything in it that you need from scales to can opener, and lots of cookware and crockery. The whole place is clean and tidy and there is a very friendly caretaker on the estate who can be contacted for advice. The property has a landline phone and honesty box for outgoing calls. There is a double bedroom, two twins, and a room with bunks. The beds were comfortable and everything was spotlessly clean.

We have visited this house twice now and I hope we will go again - it is lovely and the location is great. It's close enough to Oban for a mighty shop at the supermarket (30 mins by car) but also wonderfully peaceful and quiet. There are some very nice boat trips to watch wildlife from Balvicar (you might see a sea eagle!) and good rambles and bike rides.

The Stables were an ideal spot for our family gathering & we thoroughly appreciated the thought and attention to detail throughout the cottage. The living area is spacious & cosy with fantastic views over the loch. We had two wonderful days of weather in the week, which is a very acceptable average for the west coast in October. Super walks from the cottage, though difficult to find a great deal to do in the area in the pouring rain...again, no surprises there, so the games room is a fine solution to that problem.

A fabulous spot and well looked after on the estate. We much enjoyed going out on the boat, and also up to the loch to try to catch a fish! Would recommend taking out the rowing boat for this. Walking was good. Would recommend emphasising it is a sheep farm as far as dogs are concerned as unless they are truly sheep trained, walking is a bit limited as you would need to keep them on a lead. We would love to come again. Very peaceful and healing.

Stayed for a week at the end of July. We had every kind of weather in the space of a day, changing with the tide but in general it was dry and warm. The Stables cottage has a well equipped kitchen and lovely large living room with a patio door opening onto the garden with table and chairs and a wonderful view across the tidal sea loch. Two of the four bedrooms have views across the loch which is magical to wake up to.Walking along the shore we saw a sea otter and a sea eagle as well as a resident heron. No problem with midges although we were told they appear after dark. Everyone working on the estate made you feel very welcome. Would definitely visit again.

The living space in the Stables is comfortable and easy to use, light, spacious, welcoming. Though the dining space is slightly small it's well integrated with the sensible, usable kitchen and a sensible fixed bench provides maximum seating for one side of the table without the clutter of multiple chairs. The kitchens are very well equiped (we were renting Caddleton too) and the larder space is wonderful. My only quibble with the Stables is a personal vendetta against electric hobs. The bedrooms are slightly small but beds and bedding are good quality and who needs much space in a holiday bedroom?
Being the West coast of Scotland in summer midges are of course an issue, what was less expected was continuous good weather which was wonderful, but in conjunction with midges, led to some uncomfortable nights where windows could not be left open and with no alternative means of cooling rooms. I've been pondering how to have "renter proof" midge screens for the windows but haven't solved the probem yet, sorry. Instead we all took the duvets out of their covers and slept under the covers only until about 3am when it got cool enough to pull the duvets over the top again. A glorious time was had by all.
