Creel cottage,Dairy House, The Old Cheeseloft and Byre by the Sea, coastal self catering holiday cottages , pet friendly and situated on the coast with uninterrupted views out across the Ross Bay, in the beautiful Stewartry District of South West Scotland. Sited on the picturesque Solway Coast. The sea is only a stones throw from the cottage! Location, location, location……when you want to get away from it all!
I can honestly say, that this was one of the most beautiful and well presented places I have ever stayed.
Me and my family, stayed in 3 of the houses / cottages on the Ross Bay Retreat and Helmsley Hideaway - The Dairy House, The Old Cheeseloft and Byre By The Sea. In total there were 14 of us.
Being in such an exclusive bay location, but all being able to have our own space / areas, meant for a beautifully social yet reclusive short stay.
We stayed from Friday 04th April - Monday 07th April 2025 (and boy did we luck out with the weather - sun sun sun!)

Dairy House is a real find. Spacious, immaculately maintained, warm, with glorious views onto Ross Bay, it is thoughtfully equipped and a pleasure to stay in. We loved the peace of the location — almost at the end of a single-track road going nowhere, so the loudest sounds were from the nearby rookery. It’s also not too far from Kirkcudbright, with cafes, galleries, and all sorts of activities.
We loved Dairy House and definitely plan to return.
3rd stay at Creek cottage, so restful for my hard working daughter. Saw the deer everyday, lovely sunny weather which gave us some lovely sunrises. Lookout for the mud! But there is a lovely beach over the hill. My old dog enjoyed what will be her last holiday, thank you.
We really enjoyed our stay in this lovely hut on the farm. It was tranquil, private and very special.
Sue was so welcoming and accommodating, which started our short 2 night stay off perfectly. We ended up staying a 3rd night, due to a storm hitting the morning we were to leave we. It was fun hunkering down, cosily watching telly, and reading while winds blew. The underfloor heating kept us warm.
The main day of our stay was gorgeously sunny. We drove the 20min to Kirkcudbright spending most of the day getting brunch, looking around the shops, walking our spaniel along the river, admiring ...more
The accommodation was spotless and had very recently been painted
The location was picked so we could visit the villages around and spoilt for English Heritage and National Trust places to visit
Helmsley on the doorstep with “not just a castle”well worth a visit.
We had booked for a meal in The Star to celebrate a special birthday and weren’t disappointed with fantastic food and service and had called a couple of evenings just for a drink too
Just a couple of points there is no door hanger on bathroom door for dressing gown and although using cottage as a base we did feel the television ...more
