Domes’ Greek hotels have long topped our favourites list when it comes to stylish, family-friendly resorts, so we were pretty excited to hear they planned to venture to Portugal, especially as it’s an easy hop for a warm Spring or Autumn short break, as well as longer summer holiday.

They’ve pulled out the big guns acquiring a palatial, landmark, property right next to the cosmopolitan marina at Vilamoura, which happens to be the only hotel with direct access to the stunning, long sandy beach at Praia de Falesia too.

As we’d expect from parent company, Domes Resorts, their newly acquired Algarve property will combine all the touches we’ve come to love about their Greek properties including stylish interiors, a Montessori-inspired creche, eco-themed kids clubs, well-planned play areas and a handy list of pre-bookable nursery kit. Added to this there are the usual combination of sophisticated dining and casual family friendly eateries including their innovative street food trucks.

Daily breakfasts and dinners at the stylish Gustatio restaurant are included with all BFB bookings for rooms and suites and are available as an upgrade with self-catering Residence bookings. Meals at Neo-Geek seafood at ‘Topos’ or Mediterranean Desgustation menus at the Makis Lake side bistro – best saved for a babysitting night! - can be taken at a supplement. Families opting for 2-bedroom suite options will find upgraded options included on selected nights. There’s also a funky ‘Raw Gastro Bar offering cocktails and sushi and a casual pergola shaded pool bar for all day dining. In general, the highly rated dining at the hotel has few venturing further a field to eat out, but with Vilamoura’s many marina eateries only a short, stroller-friendly, boardwalk stroll away, a lunch, dinner or drinks elsewhere is easy to do even with mini guests in tow.

Similarly, whilst the lovely long sandy beach is an easy, pushchair-friendly few minutes walk away, the unique sand-fringed lagoon swimming pool, or heated main pool and pretty lake-side setting, make it tempting to stay put most days. Whilst the spa, complimentary pedalos, lake kayaks and multi-sports pitch, means there’s plenty to keep grown-ups occupied whilst junior guests enjoy the complimentary kids club (creche fees apply for under 2s).

We stayed at Domes Lakes for the first week of October - the staff made us feel so welcome and really spoilt our son. The restaurants were lovely, pool area was great and the haute living area was really useful when we needed a snack or glass of wine. There was plenty of room, it was easy to get bookings at the restaurants and the kids club was one of the best we’ve seen.
