We stayed a week at the Sheraton La Caleta in Tenerife in January. More than 10 years ago we stayed at the Abama Resort (now the Ritz Carlton) with Design Holidays, but that was out of reach now price-wise, so we had to compromise a little.

The Sheraton has been nice and the staff are good, but the hotel is showing its age compared to the many newer hotels around it. For example, when we checked in we found that the air con in the room was quite noisy and might affect our sleep, so we asked for a different room. We were shown 3 others, where the air con was a bit less noisy but not that much different. We were taken back to reception and told that changing room would cost an extra €60 a night (down from "€80 that it should be"). That's because the rooms we were shown were of a different grade, although they looked just the same to us (I think they had a bigger sea view). There were no other rooms the same as ours available.

That was disappointing but fortunately it was just about cool enough most (but not all) nights to have the air con off and just have the window open.

Some of the hotel decor (paint work, room doors, etc) and facilities are also looking a bit tired now. I think the place will need a full refurbishment in the next few years. Out last holiday just a couple of months ago was at Ikos Andalusia, so we know we set a very high bar there (that must be one of the best resort hotels in Europe right now).
