Despite the weather we enjoyed an excellent stay at Ewelands house. The house has absolutely everything you could possibly need. It is also dog friendly*. Highly recommended.

*Regarding dog friendly, there is no access to the garden (only the balcony area).

I wish we could upload photos so people can really appreciate how stunning the views are and how beautiful and luxurious the property is inside. The promotional photos are not exaggerating. It truly is a gem!

The welcome hamper was such a lovely touch and greatly appreciated and the attention to detail throughout Ewelands House was fabulous. Beds were comfy, the whole place was spotlessly clean and communication with Molly and Lewis was brilliant. The living/dining room leading straight onto the terrace was perfect for our multi-generational family to be together yet have their own space. The location is ideal too as we could easily walk to the village bakery, Radfords, fish and chip shop, children's play area in Sleights and even an early morning stroll through the churchyard and the fields in the other direction. We will definitely be back.

From parking the cars on arrival, to leaving a week later, was for us the most chilled and relaxing holiday anyone of us has had.
The welcome from Duncan and lovely aroma of freshly baked bread was only the beginning. The whole house, goodie baskets ( for us as well as our dogs) the interior comfort of the whole property was amazing. The views over the valley are so calming, the steam trains and others are such a sight.
We found the people wherever we went so warm and welcoming. All the village amenities really top notch as was the two pubs in Egton,( the Wheatsheaf and the Postgate) We have a lot to learn down south. Walks a plenty, inland or coastal, there was nothing we didn’t like.
Tony and myself are early 80s our daughter and husband 50/60s .All have said we shall return. BEST EVER.

We stayed for 3 nights with our toddler, baby and dog. The cot & high chair were much appreciated on arrival! Ewelands was beautifully decorated and the welcome hamper was a lovely touch. The views are just fantastic although it was a bit windy out there!

Our only criticism was the Wi-Fi / smart TV that doesn’t really connect properly but we were out & about most of the time so wasn’t really needed. It would also be good to update some of the info in the guides as much of it related to Covid-19 still.

Great location, easy to get to Whitby & RHB. Would love to visit again! Thanks Lewis & Molly x

Stunning views from this property. We were only there for two nights, but had a lovely relaxing break with our family. Sleights is well located for access to Whitby and other local tourist attractions. The house is furnished and equipped to a high standard.

We were lucky enough to stay in this amazing place for a wonderful week. Welcomed with the most beautifully smelling bread and a very comforting hamper of goodies. The house is absolutely stunning with no detail overlooked. The view is simply amazing, you could never tire of looking at it. I booked Ewelands House for my partners birthday. It is simply gorgeous. The house itself was spotless, decor is stunning and the owners even left us a welcome hamper and one for our dog! Ewelands House was everything we'd hoped for and Molly was very helpful.

My only minor comment is I was unaware the house didn't have access to a garden and having taken both our large dogs this was not ideal. We were initially looking at the one bed property which does have access to private garden, it wasn't 100% clear when booking that upgrading to the 3 beds house meant we lost the garden, having said that everything else was great.

We all enjoyed our stay here. The dog was made especially welcome with his own little goody tray. The smell of warm bread cooking greeted us as we arrived. The cottage had everything we needed. The village also had lovely shops to buy fresh produce. The local pub made us very welcome for our Sunday lunch and for quiz night on a Tuesday evening.

The only issue we had was there was no Tumble dryer as advertised in the "wash room" which wasn't in our cottage.
This was not a big issue but the response time was 24 hours from the emergency contact number as he went away and didn't take his phone ..
Other than that it was an amazing place they had thought of everything apart from a tumble dryer ...

The wording of a tumble dryer shouldn't have been on our website. It was indeed an oversight on our part as it applied to Ewelands Retreat and not Ewelands House. It has now been removed from our website and we can only apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused you. However although we don't have a tumble dryer in Ewelands House, we do provide a clothes airer on which any clothes from the washer will dry overnight with the toasty underfloor heating. Geoff did go away for the full day and unfortunately left his phone at home by mistake. However there is an alternative number as stated in the guest information, which you could have rung if you considered this to be an emergency.

The cottage is absolutely stunning - all furnishings are of the most amazing quality and the decor is so beautiful too, so well thought out. We received an email with loads of info prior to booking which was really helpful and arrived to a lovely hamper of goodies which was a lovely touch. Pub and shops on your doorstep was brilliant and you are right next to Whitby too which was great for our kids.
We did not receive the freshly baked bread or dog hamper that other guests seem to have had and unfortunately we were attached to a cottage with extremely inconsiderate guests who left their dogs inside barking all day and then would go out on the night leaving their barking dogs, meaning on 2 of the nights my children could not sleep. It was so bad we had to speak to them on the 4th day to request they didn't leave the dogs alone on the last night so we could enjoy it properly. Not the fault of Joe or Geoff but a hazard of booking a joint property.
The 2 person retreat downstairs was empty so Joe and Geoff kindly let us use that garden (Ewelands house does not have a garden) for the dogs; however, when we went down it was full of poo bags from the previous owners who hadn't taken them away.
We would definitely recommend this property and would have 100% come back if we hadn't had the experiment with the neighbour's dog - it is obvious how much care and attention has gone into the property and it would be beautiful in the summer to sit out on the balcony enjoying the amazing views.

Thank you for your review - our apologies for your bread and doggie welcome basket. It was an error on our part. We were having a couple of days away and this got missed. However, the comfort of our guests is of paramount importance to Geoff and myself and any upset we would always want to know and resolve it for our guests. Our phone is open to calls 24 hours a day as you know from your call to us with regard to using the retreat garden. It would have been good if you could have called us with regard to the barking dogs and we would have immediately sorted it out as guests are not allowed to leave dogs alone in the cottage. A cottage is a strange place that doggies aren't sure of and this is why we do have to advise guests not to leave them unattended. You were more than welcome to use the garden of the retreat as there was nobody staying, but again as Geoff and myself were away for a few days the retreat hadn't had any housekeeping done. This said our guests, are normally respectful dog owners and would want to dispose of their doggies poo bags and not leave it for ourselves to do, and indeed we do request our guests to dispose of their poo bags in our commercial waste bins provided on site.

First impression was the amazing views from the lounge, it literally took our breath away!
This accommodation exudes luxury and was absolutely spotlessly clean and highly polished.
Everything you could ask for was provided even wellies.
Our 2 dogs were immediately at home and were settled all week. A doggie basket was even provided with treats and goodies, even spare leads.
Us adults were treated with the best welcoming hamper we've ever had over the years of stay cations.
All facilities within walking distance from a well stocked Spar, top class butchers, bakery , a Chippy and a cosy pub.
So good, we've booked another week.

We really enjoyed our week in Ewelands House, it is very well equipped and comfortable. We enjoyed sitting in the afternoon and evening sun, waiting for the next steam train in the valley below.
The location of the house is great, with Bakery, Butchers, Spar Supermarket and Fish & Chips all a lose walk and excellent.

This is our second stay with our family at this property. The whole family including 4 children age 9-14 love to stay here as well as a well behaved dog.
We booked Eweland's House and retreat as well as Cowslip retreat. Both properties had everything we needed. The standard and quality of everything was extremely high.

Ewelands House was a superb property - equipped to the highest standard and very warm and welcoming. Situated slightly away from the hustle and bustle of Whitby the location is great for quick access to the lovely coastal areas nearby. The views are to die for and we were blessed with the constant sound of new lambs bleating.

After a long time apart this little family escape was just what we needed and Ewelands was the perfect property to enjoy precious time together.

Our dogs also had a whale of a time and were made very welcome - a big plus !

We will definitely want to go back.

We booked Ewelands House, Cowslip Cottage and Ewelands Retreat for a large family gathering, which limited occupancy of each property to no more than six, so we were able to have our holiday legally at the end of May 2021. The properties exceeded expectations, owner Geoff couldn't have been more helpful and we had a brilliant week. My brother even kept his new EV charged at no extra cost (Yorkshireman )
Location and local facilities (bakery, butcher, pub, chip shop etc) are excellent, view over Eskdale from all the units is superb, and each has a private outdoor balcony and barbecue. We hope to book again. Thanks to Geoff and Joe

Third time at Unique Retreats. Once again not disappointed. Joe and Geoff’s attention to detail is amazing. All the home comforts included. We tend to go out early in the morning and then return to the cottage for the rest of the day as the view is incredible and it’s so relaxing just sitting and doing nothing. We had a wonderful time. The cottage seems new and had everything we needed and more. Very cosy with the wood burning fireplace and stunning view. Country walks right on the doorstep. Pub just a three minute walk away. Whitby only a few minute drive away. The digital guide was excellent for finding dog friendly pubs and the hard copy guide in the cottage had great information on walks and sites. Love this place!!!

House is in a wonderful location. Lots of info was provided about local services and walks. Beds and furniture were comfortable and the house felt warm and cozy. Equipment provided was good and everything worked. If pressed to find a fault, a few more cooking dishes such as casserole with lid, pyrex measuring jug etc would have been useful but overall a very nice property and experience.

We do normally have lots more cooking utensils, but because of cleaning restrictions due to COVID19 - we have to wash everything in all the cupboards when guests leave we really can't have all the kitchen equipment we normally have in our cottages as we would never be able to complete the cleaning in time, but I will put back a casserole dish, and a measuring jug xx

We had a lovely stay. The property is lovely and comfy enough for all the family including the dog. There were great walks around the property and beautiful views from the balcony. We stayed at the property for New Year a couple of years ago and decided to return during the nice weather. It was a great decision to come back as it was just as amazing as we remember and our dog loved all of the countryside walks. Welcome pack was very thoughtful especially during current times. We appreciated the thoughtfulness of the precautions that were taken. Would definitely stay again and would recommend to anyone. Thanks for a great stay.

We stayed for a week with my parents and brought our dog along too. The house is set up for comfort and felt like a home from home. The views were incredible and you can do so many lovely walks from the property and is in perfect location for all the nearby attractions.

We have stayed many times at Unique retreats and will no doubt stay again. The accommodation is just gorgeous in every way with Geoff and Jo on hand to help in any way they can. Ewelands House was so nicely decorated for Christmas, really festive and cosy with the log fire burning too.
If you are wanting to stay in this area then I cannot think where you would find anywhere better with the icing on the cake being the magnificent view from the windows. All in all, a wonderful place to stay.

From start to finish our experience with Ewelands Cottage was perfect. The cottage has so many thoughtful touches and was absolutely spotless. The hampers (for the humans and dogs) were lovely. What a lovely home! Our very first holiday in Yorkshire and we could not have picked a better place. Ewelands House is a real home from home, with all the luxuries and comforts you could think of. Fantastic views of the North Yorkshire National Park with great views of the steam trains on the North Yorks Steam Railway. We sat on the balcony at different times of the day to watch the trains go by whilst enjoying a drink. Great location for exploring the local area and beyond, with many lovely walks. Very easy to get to Whitby, Scarborough and York from Ewelands House and plenty of cycling routes to be discovered too. Many thanks to Joe and Geoff for an absolutely first class accommodation, what an absolute pleasure staying there. We shall be back and will more than likely make Ewelands House and the other Unique Retreats cottages our number one holiday destination.

We have stayed in many self catering properties over the years - many through Premier cottages but this has to be one of the most comfortable, well equipped. So many thoughtful little touches from our arrival to a welcome loaf of bread waiting for us and all through the week. The views from the property are stunning and so much beautiful countryside and coastline on the doorstep. We enjoy walking so really appreciated all the details of local walks etc. provided - think we did most of them during our stay plus all the detailed recommendations on places to eat plus local shopping - the butchers and bakers are fantastic. All in all a perfect week - made even better by beautiful weather - our only complaint is there is just too much to do and see - and eat! We will definitely be back.

For the first time ever we could not find a single thing that was not catered for. The view from the balcony is spectacular and we were blessed with fabulous weather. An excellent base for visiting all the local attractions and for dog walking.

Lovely space that was beautifully decorated and comfortable. A gorgeous goodie hamper and fresh baked bread awaited our arrival and even our cocker spaniel had treats waiting for him! Nice friendly owner checked in with us to make sure everything was okay on arrival. Nice ten minute drive to Sandsend where dogs are welcome in the winter, make sure you try the cafe on the beach that is also dog friendly and do take away hot drinks and snacks.

I could not fault the welcome or the accommodation. The cottage was dressed for Christmas which made our stay even more special. Thank you for the welcome hamper - we thoroughly enjoyed the treats.

Just returned from a long weekend away at Ewelands house and we were delighted with the accommodation. Geoff and Joe have literally thought of everything to make your stay comfortable and then gone to another level to give a sense of luxury. From the beautiful fabrics and colours to the high quality bedding and bathrooms and tasteful dining facilities. Not to mention the awesome view! We were very impressed by the decor, comfort and attention to detail of Ewelands House. The house has been beautifully decorated and luxuriously appointed.There are lots of lovely touches like wellington boots supplied for guests' use and even an ipad. It is ideally located to explore the North York Moors and the coast, as well as not being far from Whitby and Scarborough. The views from the balcony are stunning. We would love to go back sometime in the future.

Such a luxurious comfortable house. Loved the fresh bread and hamper on arrival such a great treat. . Beautiful setting and loved the log fire made the cold outside evenings very warm. Wonderfully located shame it was too cold with hail storms to do any of the walks from the informative guide book. The butchers and bakery situated in the village are outstanding too for shopping for lunch and dinner. Will book again. Thank you for your great hospitality

My stay was for a Hen Do and the cottages were perfect, Joe and Geoff were very welcoming and showed me round all cottages book. It’s in a beautiful location and the cottage are just stunning.

Do not hesitate to book here- what a place! This is our second time visiting and will book next August too, It’s home from home with a beautiful view overlooking the moors. With 3 children everything was perfect. We had a fantastic holiday lots to do around the area including horse riding through the Yorkshire moors!

Ewelands House is a fantastic property with beautiful views over the Esk valley. Inside the property is stunning, every home comfort provided and so clean. The location is great, close to Whitby while quiet, and the village pub, deli and bakery are all excellent. Parking is provided altho the spaces are quite snug, with 6 cars sharing the area. The only thing to note is that all the properties are in one block, so neighbours are to the side and beneath Ewelands House, so a peaceful stay relies on all guests minimising noise inside and outside the properties.

On entering Eweland's House it was like a show house with everything that you could require for a holiday. I lot of thought has gone into the detail of requirements. The smell of home made bread was inviting. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay but felt that a little more worktop space would be an advantage. Unfortunately the mattresses on the beds were too soft for us. The only suggestion we would make is to renew the baking trays in the oven as we always used the foil provided to cover the trays before popping things in the oven. The owners have to be commended on their attention to detail.

Thank you for your review. We do try to think of everything our guests would love from their stay with us. Most of our guests love our beds and mattresses. They are of super quality, at least 2000 or more pocket sprung with sumptuous mattress toppers on them, which probably didn't help you if you like firmer beds. We can only apologise for the baking trays in the oven - we keep spares of everything and they will certainly be replaced immediately.

Ewelands House is situated in a very special position overlooking the glorious Esk Valley at Sleights near Whiby.

it is very up market self catering accommodation with everything provided including a bread making machine.

The attention to detail is second to none and I would recommend this accommodation to those who love the countryside

A very enjoyable weekend, Ewelands House is every bit as lovely as Ewelands Retreat and we were not disappointed by our decision to return to this beautiful setting. Our only negative comment would be that we find the beds too soft and whilst we recognise that mattress toppers are used to add to comfort we feel that the actual mattresses are not supportive enough. Clearly this is a matter of personal preference and is the only reason for marking the level of comfort as good rather than excellent.

We've stayed in all the properties now.,all comfortably furnished and wonderfully decorated to a high standard. The welcome hamper filled with local treats and wine came in handy on our late arrival as did the bread still warm in the bread maker, can't wait to return in January

Just what we needed for a family break with our daughter / son in law and our 29 month old grandson on our first stay in Ewelands House. Hubby and I have previously stayed in Ewelands Retreat a couple of times before, and found both to be Excellent.
The house has everything one could need for the perfect holiday, even the "Wellies" for this lovely summer we are having, and the aroma of fresh baked bread when entering the house is something out of this world.
The view is stunning while sitting on the balcony with a glass of wine in hand just waiting for the occasional steam train to pass by in the valley. Thank you "Jo' & "Geoff" for making our holiday just perfect, we will return again soon.

We could not believe our luck when we opened the door to Ewelands house , it was every thing we hoped it would be , we have been very dissapointed in the past with other properties ! Everything was perfect - it is so wonderful when you are suprised , the decor is fab , furniture sooo comfy , the beds , well what can i say - pure luxury !! All the small touches - candles , books , throws , the welcome pack , i could go on . Please do yourself a favour if you are thinking of booking , do so , you will not regret it . Then there are the views !!! Spectacular , the pub nearby - cosy and friendly , even got a fab butchers in the village . Roll on next year when we will be booking Cowslip cottage for a few days treat .
