The OLD BYRE (5 stars GOLD AWARD) is the perfect romantic hideaway, facing south with unrestricted and amazing views of the Manifold Valley. This superb cottage is ideal for couples wanting comfort, peace and quiet combining understated luxury with beamed ceilings and many original features. Downstairs there is an open-plan sitting room, dining room and new deluxe kitchen with granite worktops and integrated appliances. We have just installed a new wood-burning stove (biomass). Upstairs a galleried landing leads to a lovely double bedroom with “views to die for” (the opinion of one of our visitors). There is also a modern deluxe bathroom.

Lovely clean comfortable cottage.

We had a lovely week at Old Byre despite the mixed weather. The cottage was warm and comfortable and well equipped. Nearby Hartington is a pleasant town with a nice village shop. There are several walks direct from the cottage and pubs and cafes nearby. Our favourite cafe was in Tissington, delicious sausage baps were just what was needed after a long walk along the Tissington Trail. Would definitely recommend especially to those who enjoy walking.

Excellent cottage in a very quiet location with stunning views. The local roads are a bit of a challenge, narrow and twisting but just take your time.
Cottage was well equipped and comfortable.
Outside seating to admire the view!
Lots to do in the area, well placed for walking, cycling or touring.

The Old Byre is a beautiful cottage for two, very well appointed and in tip top condition. Inside it has everything you need for a self catering holiday whilst outside there is a barbeque and comfortable furniture (often missing from some cottages) from which to enjoy the lovely view. Chris and Liz were on hand if needed and were very friendly and approachable without being intrusive. Nearby Hartington is a pretty village but it is worth going the extra few miles to stay at Swainsley Farm. Highly recommended without hesitation and would definitely stay again if in the area.

We enjoyed our family reunion and stay at Swainsley Farm as our family had booked out all three cottages. They are set in glorious countryside surrounded by tubs of beautiful flowers. There are plenty of seating areas and a barbecue for each cottage and we were able to take full advantage of these amenities in the outside area since we had sunny weather for the duration of our holiday. We stayed in the lovely Old Byre cottage which was quite spacious and It suited our purposes but personally it is more than we would normally pay for similar accommodation. Perhaps it would make more economic sense to slightly reduce your prices and have full occupancy rather than empty cottages in the peak season.

This is our second visit to this property which says it all. The cottage is well equipped and very comfortable. Walks from the door are a bonus while it is no great distance to get bigger towns like Bakewell and Buxton. The view down the valley is spectacular. Chris and Liz are charming and helpful hosts. We hope to visit again in the near future.

We have stayed at Swainsley Farm cottages a number of times now, the location if we want to cycle is just superb, just moments away and you are onto the Manifold Way, and from that you can access quiet roads, and NCN routes further into the South Peaks. Being able to take our own bikes and know that there is somewhere under cover to store them is just great. If we decide not to take bikes, then the walking from the door is also lovely, with many routes to choose from.
Location is certainly a large part of why we have returned so many times, it's such a beautiful and peaceful spot but should you have need of the facilities of town Buxton is not far away, for basic food shopping Hartington is closer with its cheese shop, farm shop and two village stores , the areas local pubs and cafes have also been great. The cottages themselves are always beautifully prepared for us, and well equipped while even in cooler or wet weather they are warm and comfortable. Hosts Chris and Liz are on hand if you need them, but are not 'in your face' , you are free to just relax and enjoy your break. The only thing I would say is that if mobile signal is important to you, then the location of the Manifold valley is probably not ideal as there just isn't any, but for myself that's perfect, there is wifi at the cottage if you need to catch up email, but walking, cycling, relaxing on the terrace with coffee and a book without the background of electronic pinging is just idyllic and we have already booked our next stay.

We had a lovely stay at Swainsley Farm at the end of May. With extended family we booked out all 3 cottages and the kids enjoyed the lovely outside space which had plenty of different areas to have fun in but was nice and enclosed so safe for all ages. The cottages were really comfortable and we enjoyed the beautiful setting. We really enjoyed the local area as well - lots to do including more adventurous hikes as well as exploring the path along disused railway lines which were great for bikes. The owners were really friendly and helpful. Thoroughly recommended!

We wanted to visit the Peak District for the first time and found Swainsley Farm. The location is superb, within the River Manifold valley with great views southwards down the valley from the bedroom. It is also very peaceful with no traffic noise and very dark skies as there is no light pollution. We were warmly greeted by our host, Chris, who was at pains to make sure everything was just so. Our cottage was fitted out to a very high standard and it was warm and cosy, which was perfect after a hard day's walking up on Kinder Scout or just straight out of the door down the valley. It was helpful there was a washer dryer as well when we returned home liberally soaked from the weather. A mile up the hill in the village of Butterton was a great pub, the Black Lion, which produced delicious food (the lamb pie was really special) and served good beer. More widely, the access across the National Park is easy and everything was accessible in under an hour by car. Top notch place - I have already recommended to friends and will aim to go back.
