We have stayed in every cottage and apartment belonging to Port Charlotte Holidays. This time it was only two of us, so Kilchoman was ideal.
We loved the space in the living and the sleeping areas and the bed was very comfortable. Spotless and well equipped. We were only there for the weekend so didn't use the washing machine or dishwasher.
A few more glasses would have been good, as we had to keep washing the two wine glasses!! Also somewhere to hang outdoor jackets would have been good, especially if they are wet.
I would recommend any of the properties bit Kilchoman is ideal for a couple.

I had been a little anxious about the view from the property, as it is in a (very) small town, but in fact the view was one of its assets, looking out over the sea loch to the hills on the opposite shore. Handy for local eateries in Port Charlotte itself, and for touring the whole island. There was quite enough kitchen stuff for our needs, and the "bedroom" on the mezzanine floor gave the interior a nice shape. We used the upstairs en-suite shower, even though it is a wee bit poky, as the shower valve in the bath in the more spacious bathroom downstairs seems not to have worked for a long time. The wifi can be very slow. Parking is sufficient, though we were surprised that it normally accommodated as many as 6 vehicles; and when we arrived we found the parking at the front occupied by two tradesmen's vans, though they disappeared quickly overnight on the first night. We were not sure which of the pleasant garden areas was "ours", but probably we would have made little use of it, as our apartment has no direct access to it via a back door. We had cordial relations with occupants of the neighbouring apartments, and were no bother to each other. Our communication with the owner (during the booking process) was also very cordial. And even though this review has spent too much time on minor snags, our week's stay, spent in exploring such wonderful surroundings, was a great success

Margaret is excellent to communicate with, very friendly, helpful and nothing any trouble. The apartment is great, with a lovely little garden with table & seating out back, and stunning views from the window. It is very practical and feel huge because of the high ceilings! The location could not be better as it is in the heart of port Charlotte, a stones throw from the local pub, port Charlotte hotel (fantastic meals and bar) and the local community campsite which does meals also. Excellent!

We had never been to Islay before but always wanted to go. Had heard that Port Charlotte was picturesque and had everything we were looking for. As an elderly couple Kilchoman sounded perfect and it was. It’s modern, comfortable and has everything we required. Met Margaret who could not have been more helpful and told us about the local area and saved a lot of time researching.
Our holiday was more than what we hoped for, great accommodation, picturesque island, pleasant walks, good restaurants and of course the whisky tasting.

Wonderful accommodations wirh everything needed for relaxing Islay stay. Nothing‘s missing and one of the best distilleries is in 45 min walking distance

This was our first visit to Islay and we are so impressed. There’s lots to see and do and we loved Port Charlotte. The apartment was excellent and had everything we could need. It was spacious and comfortable with a well stocked bookcase. I’d love to have had time to read some of the books but we were too busy exploring the island. We cooked a couple of times and found everything we needed for food preparation and cookery. I would highly recommend this comfortable, spotlessly clean, well appointed apartment.

We had a wonderful stay at the Kilchoman apartments, it was comfortable and friendly a lovely feel to the place with great views. We had a slight issue with the washing machine and Alison was there in a moment addressing and sorting the problem seamlessly.

Lovely place to stay. The only problem was the fridge freezer seal on the door was all split so it had all frozen up and only could get the bottom door open. Looking back on the reviews it has had the same problem before.so needs freezer fixed or replaced and up stair shower needs re-grounting as black bits are starting to show through. For this reason i would not say it is worth 5 stars . but with a wee bit TLC it will be back up there. We did have a fantastic holiday.

Excellent quite big apartment (2 showers/bathrooms) in an excellent location in Port Charlotte. Wonderful views and a nice garden area; with parking. Lots to see and do in Port Charlotte itself, with pubs and restaurants, walks, cycling routes; water sports on the sea loch etc. Fantastic support from Margaret (owner) whenever required. Great wee property on Islay in an ideal location.

We had a nice stay in a well-located apartment. The apartment was well stocked with cooking utensils, towels,etc. There were some spider webs on the walls. It was spacious enough for 2, but if the 2 want to do something different late in the evening the open plan design with the bed on the mezzanine is not ideal.
I can’t remember the price,but had to submit a reading, so plumped for the middle.

Port Charlotte is a very pretty place. The accommodation is well placed in the village, which has good facilities: a shop, hotel with bar and restaurant, a pub and a seaford restaurant. Live music at the hotel was a bonus. You do need to book if you want to eat at any of them though. We didn't, so just cooked for ourselves which was fine as the accommodation is well equipped. The Kilchoman apartment had everything you could want. We would certainly recommend it. We would also recommend the distillery tour at Bowmore and the walks along the coastal path between Bruichladdich and Port Charlotte are fab. Great roads to drive around the island and the drivers all give you a little wave which you very quickly find yourself doing too.

Our host was brilliant with great communication and very accommodating with questions, information, things to do and early availability/checkin etc. The accommodation is in a fantastic location in Port Charlotte, a stones throw from the sea/beach, loachindaal bar and Port Charlotte hotel for food and drinks. The accommodation itself is in very good condition, very cozy, modern and spacious, with a nice wee garden to use at the rear of the property. Good value for money given the standard of accommodation, size of property and location. Highly recommend.

We have stayed here on a number of occasions and always happy to return. Excellent well provided accomodation, very comfortable. Islay is a beautiful island even on a stormy day and this is a good base. We'll be back!

We stayed at Kilchoman for 2 weeks and it was a great base for a holiday in Islay.Athough the apartment is all in one space, there is plenty of room for two people to spread out in.It is comfortable (the bed is great!), well equipped and well organised.The building is at the top of Port Charlotte, a short walk from the sea and everything else.There is a shop, two pubs and several places to eat in the village.Everyone is very nice and everything seems to be open except for the bike hire which is mentioned on some websites, which looked very closed when we were there.A very quiet road goes past the side of the building.There are pleasant strolls in a directions. There is a nice garden at the back of the building with a view out to sea which we enjoyed sitting in. The only snag is that you have to walk round the outside of the building to get to it, but this was not as much of a nuisance as we thought it would be.

We spent a week staying in Pot Charlotte and Kilchoman and had a great holiday which was the highlight of a difficult year (2020). Kilchoman was a lovely apartment (perfect for the two of us), the host Margaret was very friendly and accommodating and Port Charlotte was very picturesque and ideally located for getting round the island which was beautiful albeit a bit wet during our visit (October 2020). Lots of stunning beaches, villages, harbours and mountain and coastal scenery for walking and the wildlife, particularly on Jura, was excellent, more red deer than you can count, otters, hen harriers, merlin and abundant geese (quite a spectacle in the evenings). RSPB reserves well worth a visit, American Monument, Rhinns of Islay, not to mention the whisky distilleries, not all open during our visit, but the ones that were, were very welcoming, notably Kilchoman (excellent cafe), Lagvulin, Ardbeg and Bunnahabhain. Special mention for the Port Charlotte Hotel which helped keep us well nourished (see food platter second to none) and the Lussa Gin distillery on Jura is also worth a visit. Will be back with friends soon x

My wife and I enjoyed a lovely week on the beautiful Island of Islay. The Accommodation at Port Charlotte was just as nice as we remember it 3 years ago when we last visited the Island.
Weather tremendous and great base to be situated to explore the Island and its fabulous empty beaches.

Great location and within a short walking distance to The Port Charlotte Hotel which we found very welcoming and served great food.

I would definitely recommend this apartment, great location and fantastic base to visit the beautiful island of Islay.

Kilchoman was one of the most comfortable and well equipped properties we have ever stayed in. And we have stayed in many. The housekeeper maintains high standards of cleanliness and is always on call should we need her.
We thoroughly enjoyed our week but there are always reservations about booking accommodation where other groups are close by. Some groups appear to leave their brains at hone and have no consideration for others during their holiday. This happened on two occasions during our stay here this last week.
The only other negative was that there were no doors so if one person wanted to read there was no escape from the noise of the TV .
Excellently situated in Port Charlotte, within walking distance of restaurants and Loch Indaal.
Covid friendly.

Upon arrival on a dreich summers day, it was wonderful to have the apartment warm & cosy for us.
Everything was clean & fresh, & there were so many little details that helped to make the place feel homely.

We have stayed in this apartment a number of times and it is always clean and tidy. An excellent location in Port Charlotte.

Great week on Islay which does not sell itself properly. For example - Islay Hall, Bridgend - has a notice at the end of it's drive saying teas and gardens but when you get inside it is a wonderful hotel with great food and service only discovered on our way back to the ferry at the end of the week when trying to fill in a bit of time on a wet day. Kilchoman itself met all our needs and we would stay there again.

Excellent apartment for 2 people
Well equipped and spotless
Excellent location to explore Islay
Plenty locations to visit
Highlights of weeks visit
Meals at Machrie Hotel/Port Charlotte Hotel/Ardberg Distillery/Gallic Centre
Entertainment in the Port Charlotte Hotel and of course the friendly Islay people
Weather was mixed but it did not keep us from enjoying our stay

My husband and I stayed at Kilchoman for a week in April 2019. The apartment was spotless, spacious and well appointed. The bed was also very comfy. Everything was new and modern and was good value for money. We totally fell in love with Islay a will definitely be back and will be happy to book Kilchoman again. Lesley and Alasdair Smith

Well appointed & equipped apartment in a lovely historic hall, high quality throughout, situated on outskirts of Port Charlotte. Margaret & Alison could have not been more helpful sorting out our requirements. Excellent base for exploring all over Islay. We could not have had a better holiday. Islay has so much to offer at this time of year. Beaches & coastal walks, moorlands & hills, superb birds & wildlife lots of places to get up close to both. & for rest days not only cafes, pubs & hotels but all these distilleries, craft shops and places of interest to find out more about the history. We could not have had a more perfect week! Lots of winter birds visiting. & so few people around at the end of October. We’ll be back!

Our third stay in Kilchoman apartment. Port Charlotte is a great location for an Islay holiday. The Old School apartments are thoughtfully designed and equipped, very comfortable and well managed.

The views excellent. Staff really efficient and kind. It is a nice place to explore the Isle of Bute.

This is our second visit to Islay and the apartment. We last visited three years ago and the standard of the apartment is still excellent. The apartment is light and airy and situated at the top of the hill in part of the old school which overlooks the sea. It is in an ideal location for anyone who loves the outdoors and with easy access to local history (museum) and visitor centre 10 minutes walk away in Port Charlotte, plus craft fairs which take place regularly in the port. There are plenty of places to eat out either for breakfast, lunch or dinner. From here there are endless opportunities to go walking, bird watching, fishing, kayaking and with plenty of nearby whiskey distilleries, a chance to sample the many whiskeys and gins.
We have always been warmly greeted on arrival by the key holder, who is very helpful and full of local information and near to hand if needed. We would definitely return at the drop of a hat!

A family wedding took us off to Islay for a long weekend and this property was recommended to us by my niece who grew up in Islay. My daughter who is 12 going on 20 is the one you need to impress. As soon as she entered the apartment, she went wild face-timing her friends to show off her new abode. On departure, she insisted that we return to Islay just so she could stay in the same apartment again.
The only negative aspect was it is really for two which makes it quite luxurious. However, the owner kindly arranged for a fold down bed to be put in place for my daughter. It was not the best and the wooden slats kept coming out and my daughter's only complaint was it wasn't very comfortable so she slept on the couch and moved to our bed as soon as we surfaced - much more to her liking!
