The market town of Brampton is the perfect base from which to explore northern Cumbria and Hadrian’s Wall. The town is small enough to feel like you are escaping city living but large enough to have a number of shops, cafes, pubs, restaurants and takeaways on the doorstep. Brampton is just off the A69 and a 20-minute drive from the M6 making it easily accessible no matter where you are travelling from, which also means exploring northern Cumbria couldn’t be easier. The border city of Carlisle is 20 minutes away with shops, restaurants, pubs, cinema and attractions to keep the children entertained including Lazer Quest, trampoline park and soft play centres and one of the best kept castles and cathedral. Within a 5-minute drive is Talkin Tarn, a natural beauty spot with tarn, woodland trail, café and rowing boats to hire, you can also try your hand at some watersports including canoeing and paddle boarding. Historians will delight at the closeness of Hadrian’s Wall, a short drive, and many people walking the wall stop off at Brampton for refreshments before returning to follow in the footsteps of a bygone era. Within less than an hour’s drive you could be spending a day on the Solway Coast, walking the fells of the Lake District, shopping at the Metro centre at Gateshead or exploring Gretna Green in the Scottish Borders made famous by eloping couples tying the knot over the anvil.

Church End is a delightful period cottage which, as the name suggests, overlooks the church just off the centre of Brampton. The charming cottage retains many traditional features and is furnished and equipped to an extremely high standard. The family bathroom has a free-standing bath, perfect for soaking away city life or unwinding after a day’s exploring. The cottage benefits from a walled courtyard garden, ideal for al fresco dining or simply relaxing with a glass of wine. There are a number of shops, cafes and pubs serving meals within walking distance.

The cottage is gas centrally heated and comprises: Characterful lounge with comfy sofas around the smart TV. Sitting room overlooking the walled courtyard garden with a selection of books and games. Spacious kitchen fully equipped with electric induction hob, oven/microwave, fridge/freezer, dishwasher, clothes washing machine and heated airer. The dining room brings everyone together to discuss their days adventures or to plan the day ahead over breakfast, with ‘smarter’ crockery and cutlery, and mats, in the sideboard. Cloakroom with hand basin and WC.

First Floor: Bedroom with king size bed and en-suite shower room with hand basin and WC. Bedroom with super king size bed. Twin bedroom and single bedroom. The family bathroom has a free-standing roll top bath, shower cubicle, hand basin and WC.

All gas, electric, bed linen and towels provided. Cot and highchair available. Adjacent to the cottage is a parking area for 1 or 2 cars, one behind the other. On street parking is available within a short walk; alternatively, another free parking option nearby is the car park at Showfield, off Gelt Road (plus charging pods for electric vehicles). Walled courtyard garden with gazebo and garden furniture (summer season only; cushions in outside storage unit); please note the garden is accessed via steps (plus a handrail) so may not be suitable for young children or those with mobility issues. Please note that the church clock chimes regularly.

We stayed 3 nights at Church End and thoroughly enjoyed our time there. The cottage is more spacious than it looks allowing plenty of room for privacy if wanted. The village has a wonderful market, pubs and is perfectly located for day trips to surrounding sites.

The house was in a great location for shops and take away. I don’t think we realised that it was right on a busy road but it was quiet through most of the night.
The house was very spacious and well equipped. The kitchen was well laid out and the separate dining room was easily accessed through the kitchen.
The bedrooms were comfortable and we liked the bed linen and towels.
We got super customer service from Cumbrian Cottages.
We enjoyed exploring a little bit of Cumbria with a trip to Carlisle and Haltwhistle. We used “Star anise” Indian take-away for one meal. It was delicious.
All round a lovely stay.
