Caldbeck is a picturesque village in the heart of the Caldbeck Fells. The village is the ideal base from which to explore the northern Lake District with Bassenthwaite Lake, Dodd Wood, Ashness Bridge, Whinlatter Forest with mountain bike and Gruffalo trails, Go Ape and The Lake District Wildlife Park all within a 15 minute drive. Keswick with numerous attractions, shops, bars, restaurants and Derwentwater where lake cruises can be enjoyed is less than half an hours drive.

Greenside Cottage overlooks the village green and duck pond in an enviable location in Caldbeck. Accessed through the walled front garden the cottage has night storage heaters and underfloor heating in the shower room and comprises: Living room with traditional features with beams and seating around the open fire and TV. The beamed dining/kitchen is well equipped with electric oven and hob, fridge, microwave and washing machine.

The first floor has a master double and twin bedroom with a TV in the twin. Shower room with hand basin and WC.

All electric, initial supply of coal for the open fire, bed linen and towels provided. Cot available on request. Garden with patio area with seating and lawned garden.

Nice cottage, good location , but small,easily fixable things let it down.

The village is lovely and the cottage was nice and central.
The issues we had were all minor and could so easily be addressed:
1 kitchen equipment was minimal and what there was had seen better days eg a colander without a bottom, cracked wine glass, placemats all scuffed and despite being scrubbed wouldn't clean, and a salt dispenser that looked like a health hazard.
2 Oven door felt loose and unstable;
3 neither of us could get the WiFi password to work;
4 Lots of DVDs on the shelf but no player;
5 the tv aerial in the living room was an absolute eyesore and was the first thing you saw when entering the cottage;
6 four towels were provided, but only one was a bath towel..
It just felt that the bare minimum had been done to make it rentable and it didn't compare favourably with other holiday homes we have stayed in.

Thank you for your review and I am sorry the cottage did not meet your expectations. We do ask all guests to let us know if there are any problems so we can address them and ensure you have the best possible holiday. Had you made us aware of the problems during your stay, we would have been able to resolve a number of these for you which would have enhanced your holiday. We will of course pass your comments on to the owner and ask them to address these as soon as possible. We hope we are able to welcome you back to one of our cottages again in the future.

We have stayed in greenside cottage before, it provides a good base to explore the lakes and Cumberland. With a pub and village store within a 5 minute walk. It's off the main road so it's quiet but not in the wilderness, at night the lack of light pollution brings a million stars, and it's only a handful of miles from the wild ponies and deer of the Mungrisdale valley.
That said, a bit of minor maintenance/updating wouldn't go a miss.

Thank you for a lovely review of Greenside Cottage. Caldbeck for a small village does have a lot of amenities and is handy for exploring north Cumbria with some stunning views on route. The area is always popular with star gazers and aurora hunters for the very reasons you stated. We hope we can welcome you back again in the future.

Lovely cottage, very comfortable beds, sofas and well appointed kitchen. Owner was very efficient in getting immediate help with a drainage issue, and the village store, the dairy milk vending machine, the Muddy Duck cafe and the local pub were fantastic reasons to stay around the area, although we were well situated for Keswick, Hadrian's Wall and Derwent Water. Highly recommend feeding the neighbouring ducks in the pond.
