With its incredible cliff-backed scenery and wide sea views, long pebble beach and unspoiled charm, Budleigh Salterton is a dream destination for holidays with friends and family on East Devon’s Jurassic Coast. Settling on Queen Street and just a stone’s throw from the seafront and coast path, if you’re in search of a superbly positioned base from which to explore the delights of Budleigh as well as its coastline, this great little property is perfect.

Comfortably furnished and with ample space for four guests, The Cottage which is arranged over two floors, has two lovely bedrooms and a spacious family bathroom upstairs. Downstairs on the ground floor is a dining room, a modern well-equipped kitchen, and a cosy living room with access outside to the courtyard garden where you can enjoy a coffee before heading out to the beach.

As part of the East Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), Budleigh’s scenery is out of this world. The 2.5-mile pebble beach contrasts with the red sandstone cliffs on either side of the town, and the water in the bay which is clear, and calm is excellent for swimming and water sports. Otterton and its fabulous tearoom at Otterton Mill is just a scenic two mile walk away along the River Otter which passes through salt marsh, meadows and pastureland so guests can enjoy the wonderful scenery before stopping off for a delicious lunch or cream tea. Those who enjoy a slightly more energetic walk can follow the 5.5 mile circular route along the South West Coast Path to Ladram Bay and be rewarded with stunning views of the coastline.

The town also has a wide variety of shops, most of which are independently owned, as well as numerous places to eat out which range from beach-side cafes to restaurants, cafes and pubs.

Location of cottage near to both beach & High Street shop very good. A microwave in the tiny kitchen would helpful. Also there were no instructions on how to use TV or coffee machine
shower. Builders had resummed work next door so noisy at times although we were warned of this possibility. Bathroom very difficult to use shower small bath! Parking was also problem, having to walk 5 to 10 mins to free car park - again this was pointed out to us beforehand.
Not a particularly good choice of property for us senior folk.

Need some work still…

We stayed for 4 nights. Let me start with the good things: the location is very good, only a few meters from the beach and the high street. The kitchen furniture was new. There was an obvious effort to make it ready as we booked last minute. Customer service was very good from luxury cottages.

But… the whole cottage has a smell of damp that makes the stay unpleasant and you wouldn’t have been able to stay indoors for any length of time. Even our clothing took on the same smell by the end of our stay. The bathroom has a sloped ceiling and there is no shower curtain for the bath tub. This means if you are more than 1.5m tall you have to shower sitting down! There were no basic extras eg hair dryer. On our 3rd day we had a fright when the kitchen was filled with ants- all over the floor, up the walls and inside cupboards.

It was a shame because the place has potential and in a good location. Hope the owners can make the necessary modifications and we would gladly return!!
