We first stayed at Surfside over New Year 09/10 and were absolutely blown away by the property and the views. In the years since we've stayed there many times and this New Year we decided to return. Incredibly, all of the furniture, fixtures and fittings are exactly the same as they were 14 years ago, and that's not necessarily a good thing.
The time we stayed prior to this, we had to call out the caretakers (who had to call out a local odd job man) as we had leaking pipes outside and no power in the kitchen. This year, within hours of being in the property, I had to contact them again as the latch on the door had locked us in, although thankfully family arrived afterwards and we were able to pass the key under the door to unlock it from the outside to escape.
After a quick nostalgic look around we were saddened to see the state of the place. Ceiling lights hanging down, damp patches on ceilings, toilet seats held together with brackets and glue and old tattered outdoor furniture heaped outside. Comfort-wise, the master bed has clearly been repaired many times (a slat fell out the first time I sat on it) and is a little lumpy in places. The sofa suite in the front room has weather surprisingly well but are not terribly convenient to sit in (we had to bring down pillows as back supports). The oven (for which there were no instructions that we could find) doesn't heat to the appropriate temperature probably because the door doesn't close properly. There's also very little room to store food in the kitchen (although one cupboard houses approximately 30 champagne flutes which could be thinned out a bit to make room).
As for cleanliness, it was fair, although we did find crumbs under the tatty plastic tablecloth, a bottle of water under the bed and an open packet of M&Ms in one of the cupboards. We also couldn't find a hoover anywhere!
Porth will always have a special place in our hearts, as will this property, but we can't ignore the fact that it is utterly heartbreaking that it has been neglected in such a way. It deserves better and so do you.

Thank you for your honest review regarding Surfside, as you say it is in the most wonderful location with absolutely breath taking views which is the massive attraction of this property. I do apologise that you had some issues to overcome and I hope that it didn't disturb your holiday too much. We welcome your feedback and are working with the owner to rectify some of the areas of concern.

Beautiful views - needs some tlc

The views from this property are amazing, hence, our return again this year. I accepted that the property needed some TLC so returned with that in mind plus I’d been assured that the more dangerous issues had been resolved, and they had. Unfortunately, on arrival last Friday in the dark (we’d travelled straight from school), someone had parked in our space and there was no external lighting so we all nearly broke our necks dragging our luggage down lots of slippery decked steps in pitch black. We hadn’t been there long and having filled the American style fridge freezer with the gluten-free food that we’d brought with us we then started to prepare something to eat then the electrics tripped. Not a problem I thought as I’d find what was tripping, eliminate it and reset the fuse box. We found the fuse box but nothing had tripped so we figured the downstairs ring main must be on a separate circuit. After hours of searching every nook and cranny and trying every key to every cupboard we still couldn’t find it so couldn’t even have tea and toast as every essential kitchen item was on that circuit. It was just past midnight so I called all 4 numbers provided and someone called me back within 15 minutes. After a lot of calls they arranged for an emergency electrician to come out but he also couldn’t find the fuse box and after resetting the main fuse board outside blew some of the lights (which there were no replacement bulbs for) and we completely lost wifi so now we weren’t able to use the tv’s, our iPads etc., and so still no electricity in half the house and it was 3.30am before we got to bed. I was the only guest that could get one bar of signal if I stood in the upstairs balcony so roaming was not an option. Fortunately, the caretaker arrived at 8am with a key to the owner’s cupboard where we found the fuse box and saved the day. There were other little things like door handles hanging off, fan on the oven not working etc., The staff that helped were lovely and sent out flashlights and arranged for another electrician to get the outdoor lights working and a BT engineer for the hub. Unfortunately, the outdoor lights were beyond repair and needed replacing and BT never came out and the temporary 4G hub they were sending to us never arrived in time. My other guests left early as they weren’t impressed so I was left alone in this huge house with my 8 year old child who has special needs with virtually no form of communication or entertainment (TVs ran via wifi not aerials) when storm Ciaran hit. It was terrifying…4am 2 November 5metre waves, tornado strength winds, house shaking, on the edge of a cliff, patio furniture flying around etc. We had to bunker down in the basement bathroom as it sounded like the roof was going to fly off (the next day there were lots of slate tiles missing off the roof where we were sleeping and strewn on the patio and as far as the car park which is quite a distance from the house). My son had a severe panic attack and chest pain and started saying his goodbyes and we couldn’t go upstairs to get a signal as it was too dangerous. Hence, we packed and left early.
I still have a soft spot for this house and it’s views and the staff were lovely but I’m not sure if I will return as my son is so traumatised by it all and we didn’t really get a break with all the comings and goings and lack of routine, cooking facilities, essential lighting and most importantly, no assurance that we could get help in an emergency or that the electrics were safe (smoke alarm also missing off top floor). I’m pretty easy going and grateful for the privilege of staying in such a fabulously located and nice property but safety-wise I wouldn’t put my child at risk again. Maybe when he’s older.

I am so sorry you had such a disaster, the team have just been to Cornwall and have been checking that all the houses are up to standard, I can only apologise for all of this, its really sad to hear. Thank you for being so kind about our small and personal team, we do have other cottages so perhaps it might be worth ringing and having a chat with us where we can advise on where would be better suited for you and your son and what you are looking for out of a holiday. once again huge apologies. The location was excellent and the views are amazing but the house itself is a bit tired!
It could use a bit of TLC!
The bed in main bedroom is broken,
The patio door doesn’t lock.
The cushions for outdoor furniture are covered in bird poo! They just need a wash!
The beach chairs in garden just need throwing away, they are all rusty.
The cooker and all the frying pans were filthy!
And there were cobwebs all over the cooker hood and kitchen.

We had a fabulous week at Surfside - the location could have not been better and the facilities in the apartment were excellent.
Just perfect for our large group, and we never felt cramped as there was plenty of space for all. The only thing we hadn't expected was to be charged £70 for a week's parking of our second car - I would imagine most large parties would arrive in more than one car, but it didn't distract from a great week.

Fantastic place to relax and enjoy the view's of the sea and, shore line.
Did not realise it had two seating area's which was a bonus.
Plenty of room in the main bedroom with en-suite and balcony. Personally, I was a little disappointed with the king-size bed as I just could not get comfortable.
The patio areas where a great place to relax but, l did notice there were a few broken and moving
SLABS which could be a issue for children.
Just be aware , there is a hole in the decking right outside the top patio doors.
We wondered why there is a hole and when we saw a rat a couple of times from the inside it answered our question.
Again this did not bother us but it may others.
