Discovered down a quiet foresty lane and against a soundscape of birdsong is Burley Mews – a stylish, dog-friendly retreat that’s spot on for a couple or small family. A quaint wooden gate separates the private leafy garden from open forest out the front, while the honeypot village of Burley is a gentle walk away.

Didn't meet our expectations

The day we arrived, after a 7 hour drive, we found the cottage very cold, no heating was, or had been on. In the welcome booklet it did say, not to touch the settings on the boiler, so I sent a message to the owners as this was to be our point of contact. Phoebe did come over about 10 minutes later. She asked what the problem was ( even though in my message, I had asked how to turn the heating on ) I said it was cold & could we please have the heating on. Her words to me were " Its June " It wasn't the response I was expecting, and I felt as if I was almost being told, you don't need the heating on as its June ! I automatically went into my apologetic mode, and said sorry to her, but we were feeling cold. She did then go upstairs and showed us the switch to turn the heating on. It was in the off position. But made it clear that we had to turn it off once warmed up, and should not leave it on when going out. Not a great start, but at least we'd be warm. Phoebe did soften, and was quite chatty before she left.
There were spider webs around the cottage, in the bathrooms and bedrooms. Although, on the whole, as clean as you would expect a holiday cottage to be. We did expect to have hand soap in the bathroom, but the bottle was empty. We did expect to have salt, but there wasn't any. The inside of the kettle was full of loose scale floating around in the water. I got a glass oven proof dish out of the cupboard, it was covered in grease, ( I took a video of it ) it had been put away dirty by someone, and obviously not checked that it was clean. My husband has Parkinsons and because of this we sleep in separate rooms, which meant we had to pay extra to be able to use the second ( downstairs ) bedroom and walk in shower ( my husband can not climb in & out of a bath ) So we paid over £2,000 for 10 nights. For this kind of money we expected perfection, unfortunately, for us, it wasn't.

A beautiful mews style flat, right in the heart of the new Forrest, with open woodland immediately outside your front gate. No need to drive anywhere.
The mews has a great feeling about it with a modern / rustic charm. Lots of details you may otherwise not get in a holiday cottage - the Nespresso coffee machine with coffee pods, wine in the fridge and even biscuits. Not to mention tea bags. These small touches made us feel very spoiled and cared for.
The garden is enclosed so we could relax knowing our dog couldn’t escape.
The only small gripe was we did find it cold early mornings and evenings and it would’ve been better with some control over the heating as the radiators didn’t seem to come on at all? We were happy to add layers so it wasn’t a deal breaker for us. However on chilly days (as we had) coming back to base and not being able to warm without wrapping up did take away from the overall experience. Apart from that - as already stated- if you’re going away to explore woodland you have many trails right outside your gate with a beautiful village and pubs all within easy walking distance. Not to mention everything else being a very short car journey away.

Burley Mews is a lovely property, beautifully renovated and maintained with everything you need. We especially loved all the little extras like the Touch of Nature toiletries and activity packs for the kids ( although they are already teenagers they still loved to get stuck in!) and a fully stocked tea/coffee and spice cupboards. We felt very spoilt but also these small touches make a big difference on holiday as one can just sit back and relax knowing someone else has thought of everything. The rooms are spacious and very comfortable. The location is perfect - being within easy walking distance from Burley town and the surrounds and easy driving distance from most of what the New Forest has to offer. We would happily recommend this property and look forward to staying here again in the future.
