Do you dream of escaping to the classic thatched country cottage in a ‘far from the madding crowd’ chocolate boxy village? Then here you go! Cruck Cottage, named after its cruck (or curved) timber framework, is believed to be the oldest house in a very old village. It is also, possibly, the oldest cruck-framed cottage in Hampshire, but exact dates are lost in the mists of time – making it an idyllic destination for any architecture, history and cottage enthusiasts.

Step into the past. Cruck Cottage is ageing gracefully at over 500 years old. And as it’s Grade II listed, all of its quirks and character have been carefully retained. These include wonky old beams, exposed brickwork, inglenook fireplace, traditional cottagey plank and latch doors, and sloping floorboards.

The cottage was lovely, and well stocked with everything we needed for us, our toddler and two dogs (including washing machine, pegs and washing line). The garden was beautiful and perfect for the dogs as it was enclosed and they could wander in and out without us worrying. There was a quiet lane leading to a field for night time toilet walks just a couple of metres from the front door. The property was so picture-esque, we were really happy there for the week.

The thing that really let the cottage down was the poor job that the cleaning/change over service had done in between the last guests and ourselves. They hadn’t hoovered- there was broken glass on the kitchen floor (which, given we had a young child and dogs with us and arrived late at night was really frustrating) and rubbish from the last guests under the sofa and the bath and kitchen sink were both really dirty, they hadn’t been cleaned at all. Overall the cottage was well kept and the linens all smelt clean and a lot of thought had gone into the cottage furnishings and decor so it seems a shame that the change-over clean was so poor.

Hi Charlotte, Thank you for such a lovely review, and for taking the time to share this. We're really glad the cottage worked so well for your family and the dogs - the enclosed garden and quiet lane for night walks especially. We're sorry to hear the changeover clean wasn't up to our usual standard. We wish you'd let us know while you were there, as we would have loved to do it right, as we agree that was unacceptable, and I am so sorry (and shocked) this was missed. Thank you again for the kind words about the cottage, we would love to have you back!

Set in a stunning village surrounded by thatched cottages and countryside Cruck cottage is exactly what you expect from an old authentic cottage with low ceilings, a large chimney breast, flagstone floors, creaky doors, uneven floors and no 4G (but wifi is provided). Great bathroom with fabulous shower, kitchen had everything we needed, garden was lovely to sit in. We got a little cold downstairs but blankets had been provided, upstairs was warm and cosy. Access isn't easy in a big car but manageable. Great place to explore the nearby footpaths and the church grounds via the permissable pathway and also a fabulous place to use as a base to visit the countless beautiful villages, towns and New Forest nearby. Lots of maps and booklets provided to help with this. A lovely place to escape to.

Spent 10 days here and had a fabulous time - absolutely loved our stay in the Cruck Cottage and the New Forest! The cottage is cosy, comfortable and well equipped. Loved the location and garden too. Thank you so much for the special touches such as dog biscuits, logs, and eggs. We really enjoyed the pub too, were lucky to have a band there on our last night! Our stay was perfect and will happily return to this lovely place!
Thank you New Forest Escapes for finding us the right fit!
