I have given some consideration to writing this review as I have given detailed feedback to the lettings operator and have had a constructive exchange with Sarah who I imagine is senior in the company. I've given a 3 for customer service because some of it was exceptional, meriting a 5, but part of it much less so. I'm sorry I had to give a score at all as a 3 does not reflect either of these extremes.

I booked the house for 5 nights from 1st October 2025 to accommodate 8 adults for a birthday celebration. The house itself is well presented but rather kitsch. Less kitsch and more basic essentials will be an improvement.

It has wonderfully comfortable sofas in the sitting room – for six. Although the house sleeps 8, it is not really set up for 8 adults. I’m sure it would work for 4-6 adults with children. The beds are comfortable, but if you have specific preferences for your pillows I would take your own. The main problem is the lack of shower facilities for 8 adults. There are plenty of lavatories and one bedroom has an ensuite shower. There is a large bathroom with a huge bath and handheld shower head. The bath is no doubt fine for washing kids (or a romantic couple bath). But you wouldn’t want to stand in it with a hand held shower in the morning or after a long day walking or cycling. There is ONE shower at the far end of the building. Not really enough for 6 adults (if there are 8 of you). We shared the en-suite shower with guests but this was far from ideal.

Apart from that it is the kitchen which presented the most issues operationally. I am assured that the matters I have raised will be addressed so I will be brief here. Before you arrive do check that you do not need to bring your own: oven gloves (3 of us burned our hands); hand towels for the kitchen; decent T Towels; a cafetière or percolator (a pod thing is provided if you don’t mind tepid indifferent coffee); serving spoons; wine glasses; enough crockery for the type of meals you intend to cook; a couple of small/medium pans and a roasting tin which will fit the low level oven better.

I had a bit of a run-in with the property manager over rubbish left for weeks by previous guests. I suspect that wouldn’t happen again, but do check when you arrive that there is enough space in the bins for the waste your party is likely to generate.

The location is good for getting out into the New Forest itself. The Swan pub is less than 5 minutes walk and does really excellent pub food with a good choice for vegetarians – there were 3 in our party – and the cycle shop in Lyndhurst offers brilliant service. They have a lot of e-bikes, perfect for the less adventurous cyclist too. For a special meal I highly recommend Hartnett and Holder at Lime Wood. The surroundings are fabulous, food and service excellent and weekday lunches very reasonable, although more expensive for a la carte vegetarian dishes.

I hope this is helpful and I’m sure you can have a really relaxing time if the shortcomings listed are addressed.

Wood Haven is a really beautiful house situated in a quiet road about 5minute drive from Lyndhurst and a 5 minute walk to open Forest.
The house itself is very spacious, beautifully designed and very well equipped (although it could do with a tumble dryer!). The sofas and beds are dreamy - so soft and comfy! The garden is pretty and we enjoyed bar-b-q’s in the evenings. The library was full of books, board games and children’s toys which all the family enjoyed.
New Forest Escapes were very quick to help when we needed anything. We were there for 3 weeks, and were very sad to leave. We will definitely be back to stay at this lovely house.

Having spent a long weekend at Wood Haven (Woodhay) Lyndhurst I have to say we were all thoroughly impressed with this unique self catering accommodation. Lovely setting, deceptively large garden. Great location with two pubs and Lyndhurst within walking distance. Accommodation is very spacious, extremely well equipped and exceedingly comfortable.

A real find. Definitely looking to stay again

Our stay at Wood Haven was a last minute booking but we were very happy with our choice. The house is set in a very quiet, private close yet the location is perfect for getting into the New Forest by car and bike, or walking across the fields into Lyndhurst to the cafés and restaurants.

The house itself is very well appointed with heaps of living space and a fabulous kitchen, which we loved. The bedroom/bathroom layout is slightly unusual but suited our family of four fine. If travelling as two families, one of the other bedrooms would work better as an additional twin room, rather than the double bed, so four children could stay in separate beds.

The property is a new rental and we did face some teething problems that weren't rectified by New Forest Escapes during our stay which was disappointing. The Sky TV offering wasn't available although it was easy enough to log into the apps on the smart TV. The log burner was perfect for the chillier evenings and secure storage for the bikes was a real bonus.
