This was our second trip staying at The Green. We returned as the location is fantastic with loads of great walking, pubs and places to visit all within easy reach. The local pubs are all different and worth a visit. The house is really comfortable and has absolutely everything you could ever need…..making for a very relaxed stay. Carly and Richard are really relaxed hosts allowing you to really enjoy your stay. Well worth visiting!

The Carthouse suits our little group perfectly with a great layout and plenty of space. Everything feels top-notch with attention to detail, from the welcome basket to the toiletries, and it is spotlessly clean.

Five of us travelled to The Green by train from the south and east of England for our annual walking reunion. We loved The Carthouse which is very well equipped with the added bonus of daily garden visits by the red squirrels. It is an ideal base for walking straight from the door into the nearby Paradise Tarn, along to Smarden Viaduct and up Green Bell. We walked to the local pubs and organised a taxi from Kirkby Stephen and a supermarket food delivery. We wish we could have stayed longer!

I recently booked all 3 properties at The Green for my 50th birthday. The standard of all them is off the charts. I’ve stayed in plenty of holiday lets, but the thought that has gone into equipping these is next level. Could not have wanted more and were even given a lift to the station when taxis proved to be an issue.

We planned on visiting the Lake District and after months of looking online at various accommodations, we stumbled across The Green Cumbria. We loved the look of it online and made our reservations, despite it being further out from the Lakes than others we considered. And we hit the jackpot! We stayed at the Carthouse and it was even better than we imagined it to be. The location is perfect - it gave us the option of visiting the Lakes and the Dales. It was impeccably clean and every detail has been carefully thought through by Richard and Carly on what you would need on vacation. They are incredibly kind and thoughtful hosts. The rooms are beautifully decorated and the beds are heavenly - so unbelievably comfortable. We really appreciated the welcome hamper of local goodies and all the information on the local area, places to visit and where to eat. If you’re looking for a perfect place to relax, unwind and enjoy some family time - The Carthouse is where it’s at! Our stay was truly a 5 star experience and every need was met on our 3 generational vacation. We can’t wait to return to the Carthouse, hopefully next year. Thank you Carly and Richard for sharing this slice of Cumbrian paradise.

We had a great stay at The Carthouse for New Year! The property is approx 1.5 miles from Ravenstonedale which has two lovely pubs. There are great walks from the cottage or from within a 30 minute drive. The welcome pack provided was a lovely touch with all the necessities included, ie bread, milk, butter and wine as well as lots of other items. Very large, super comfortable beds helped make this a very relaxing stay. We’ll definitely be back!

The Carthouse really is a first class property. It was the perfect location for a relaxing week with family. Richard and Carly have done an amazing job in making it a home from home. Carly responded quickly when our arrival was delayed and ensured that we arrived to a warm and welcoming refuge from an eventful journey. The property is spacious, extremely well-equipped with comfortable beds and the added treat of a welcome box filled with local produce. If you love walking, nature and dark skies then this is the place for you. We saw red squirrels every day from the windows and at least 18 bird species. We were lucky enough to have several clear nights and had no problem viewing the Milky Way from the lane. We even had blankets, headtorches and a star guide provided! There are plentiful walks either from the door or a short drive away and a couple of great pubs in the village. We have stayed in many properties in the UK and The Carthouse is definitely in our top 5. The information provided about our stay both via the App and in the property itself was excellent and easy to use. We'd love to come back and wouldn't hesitate to recommend to anyone. Lovely modern home in a quiet location. The owners of the property are lovely and are there if you need them. We were in awe of the birds and the red squirrels. We kept them well fed all week ! The house had everything you needed. Loads of literature and plenty of games for all ages. The enclosed garden was just perfect for our pooch and the walks situated in the area were plentiful. All in all we had a fantastic time and would definitely love to return one day.

We hired all 3 properties for a family holiday of 11 people plus dogs and had a great time, the houses are set in a beautiful location with plenty to do in the local area, lovely pubs and nice walks, lots of wildlife. There is also easy access to the Lakes and Dales further afield. The arrangement of the 3 properties worked very well for us and all are well equipped: there is lots of information provided on local activities and attractions. We would love to come back again.

Fabulous place to stay. So quiet, but great location to experience lots out and about with our dog. Star gazing was brilliant on the one clear night we had. The Carthouse was very comfortable and we've never been so spoilt with the extras that Richard & Carly put in place throughout the house - very welcome.

We have really enjoyed our stay at the Carthouse! In an amazing location! Lovely to see the Red squirrels . Very spacious and clean! Only downside is the water scenario, we was only able to get 1 bath of hot water before it ran out. It’s a shame to have the ability to use a jacuzzi bath but not enough hot water. As you probably already know, I’m not the best driver and managed to get stuck in the ditch on the drive up the track… a sign to advise of a ditch would be handy! overall, thank you so much! It’s been a lovely stay and we will look at coming back soon!!

We booked the Carthouse for a birthday celebration with four other members of the family having already previously viewed it courtesy of Carly and Richard. We decided it was the perfect venue for us to enjoy the surrounding area and have lots of scenic walks with Willow our black lab. We were 100% correct to make this decision. We all had an amazing time everything we wished for beautiful, clean and cosy accommodation in an idilic location. Red squirrels on your door step literally! Fell ponies on the driveway and the scenic Howgiill fells to discover from the front door. Recommended walks to Courtly spout and the Smardale viaduct. If you want a drive then walk High cup Nick is an amazing sight to behold (carpark at Dufton). There are two pubs in Ravonstonedale we had dinner at the Kings Head a couple of times and drinks at the Black Swan. Both excellent. The kitchen in the Carthouse is very well equipped and we had many memorable meals. Loved it thank you !

I would like to suggest that a barbecue is provided in the courtyard garden of the property. This would be more convenient than having to take everything (food, crockery, cutlery, drinks, glasses) to the beck area.

We had a lovely stay in "The Carthouse", what a fantastic place to spend a break in Cumbria. The accommodation had everything we needed, and more, and the Dogs also passed comment that they would like to return, in fact they ended up demanding a return visit. The location could not have been better, far enough away from the hussel and bussel of daily life, yet close enough to partake in some of the local draft beers after a rewarding walk around Ravenstonedale. The App provided by Richard and Carly is extremely well designed, and provided us with a great deal of useful information about the property and the surrounding areas before we arrived. The WiFi was also very good, and never failed us during the stay, which is a big plus for me and my wife. Your every need is catered for, everything is very clean, tidy and well looked after, and the Welcome Pack is tip-top, and well presented - very nice touch indeed. Quite honestly the best accommodation we have experienced in our years of self catering in the UK, gets a top-end 5 star rating from us. We will be back.

We have had the most amazing time
There are lots of fabulous walks close by (the dogs are exhausted!) either walking directly from the cottage or a short drive away. The cottage is brilliantly equipped and the owners have been excellent. Will definitely come again!

A welcoming home-from-home in Yorkshire. Beautifully decorated and furnished with a well-equipped kitchen and spotless bathrooms. A great place to explore the Howgill Fells with easy access to local pubs for good food. A lovely part of the country and an excellent base to relax and adventure from.

Having driven past Ravenstonedale many times over the years on our way to the north east to finally be able to stop and enjoy the village and surrounding countryside highlighted that we should have done this sooner.
Our week’s stay as a family was very enjoyable with the location enabling us to go on walks without having to drive far (if at all) from the front door using the information pack that had been left for us to use.
And yes – we saw a red squirrel from the kitchen window eating the nuts that we had put out for the wildlife!!
The Carthouse is a very comfortable and tastefully furnished property throughout for a family and out dog with the spacious and well-equipped kitchen deserving a special mention - the welcome pack was a very nice touch.
We will try and make a return visit.

Five members of the Chamois Mountaineering Club stayed in The Carthouse for a week in early March 2022. The accommodation proved to be excellent for our needs with everything neatly arranged throughout the house with all information needed to run the house, readily available. The kitchen was fully equipped in all aspects. Whilst the fridge was a little small for 5-independant users, it was sufficient. The lounge was very comfortable and once we had discovered the booster switch under the stairs, we always had enough water for everyone to have a hot shower/bath. The wet room on the ground floor was ideal as a second shower room/washroom, supplementing the bathroom on the first floor. It was great to have detergents and toilet rolls (initial supply) provided. The bedrooms were well appointed and warm, yet a few extra hooks on the walls would not have come amiss. The location of the green is ideal for walking access to Orton, Smardale, the Howgills and Mallerstang. One member of the party brought an e-MTB, which proved ideal for exploring the country roads as far as Appleby and Sedbergh. The outhouse was sufficient for bike storage and lockable. An outside electricity socket would have been useful for e-MTB charging purposes. The outside hose was invaluable for washing boots, gaiters and the e-MTB after a day on the hills. The other cottages at .The Green were also occupied by other Chamois members, which allowed a good deal of socialisation. We inevitably ended up having communal meals together in the larger properties. In sum, The Green is an ideal location for exploring the Ravenstonedale countryside and the facilities cannot be faulted and it was a pleasure to stay there.

If you want peace and quiet, relaxation this is the place to stay. It really has everything you need. We have had a wonderful week and can't wait to return.

A very clean, comfortable and spacious property. Appreciated the generous welcome pack and eco-friendly products. Best equipped kitchen I've encountered in a cottage! Have been very impressed with the ease of the whole booking process and App which provided everything we needed to know about our stay, the locality etc. Such a good idea. Ravenstonedale is a beautiful area to explore and local pubs offer good dining and a cosy, traditional feel.

Family loved it; great food in local pub and the red squirrels are good to see. Wifi, internet & phone signals very poor; gives a chance for the family to talk :)

The Carthouse is part of a huge old barn that has been completely gutted and refurbished to a very high standard while still maintaining a charming echo of its old rustic existence. Bedrooms, kitchens and bathrooms are furnished and decorated beautifully with everything you could possibly need to hand as well as countless thoughful additions and finishing touches.
The setting, in the Howgill fells of Cumbria, is to my mind the most beautiful spot in the country. There are expansive hills and valleys for the kind of walking that reminds you what is is to be alive; countless becks (small rivers) and picnic spots where children can play endlessly paddling, making dams, fishing for tiddlers or if you're small, just throwing stones into the water.
The local village, Ravenstonedale is a great place with two good pubs, a lovely old church and plenty of friendly locals.
I came to the Green with my extended family so we took all three of the properties (the Carthouse, Haystore and Byre) and had a magical time throughout our stay. For this reason I have duplicated this review for all three places but I know I speak for all 13 of us when I say that despite being seasoned travellers, (with more than a couple of centuries experience between us), we have never stayed anywhere better.

The family , including 3 adult 'children' enjoyed a wonderful stay. Perfect location, perfect accommodation! Excellent information provided beforehand, owners on hand if needed. Mesmerised from early morning by the local wildlife, red squirrels, pheasants, sheep right outside our windows! So much to see and do we will definitely be making a return trip.

The property was nice and clean. We were lucky with the weather and there are plenty of places to sit outside. We particularly liked the seats high up in the garden with a bit of a view. Everything worked and was clean. The wi-fi was a bit sketchy but maybe no bad thing. Be aware that the property is about a mile from the village pubs and also another pub across fields (for a shortcut). This didn't cause us a problem. The road is a very quiet single track road.
If you like the outdoors then it's not a bad location. We went walking, cycling, swimming and running on the roads and the hills. There are only two bathrooms but six of us stayed and it didn't cause a problem at all.
