Featured in a Conde Nast roundup of the 25 best villas in Europe, this small Tuscany villa for two with a private pool is a firm favourite for couples who want to enjoy the Tuscan coast. In a quiet hillside position, opposite the ancient hill village of Ameglia, this cottage has beautiful views both of the Magra estuary and of the Apuan marble mountains, as well as a swimming pool and furnished patio from which to survey it all. Approached up a narrow country lane, there is a delightful atmosphere of peace and quality here. This jewel of a retreat, dressed in stone and ivy, has just the right furnishings for a relaxing holiday.

Close to the panoramic pool, the entrance is through french doors into a sitting room, and this room opens into a small kitchen, which in turn leads out to a delightfully cool furnished pergola. Also on the ground floor is the bathroom with a separate shower. Stairs from the living area lead up to a double bedroom with a sweet upper terrace that is furnished with sunbeds and an umbrella, just the place for that short afternoon snooze.

A lovely house, ideal for a quiet and restful holiday, with stunning views of the village of Ameglia where there is a lovely restaurant, within walking distance, though not an easy walk. The owners Mario and Wendy are lovely people and made us feel very welcome.

You will be thrilled you found Casa Guelfi - and not just because it’s a dauntingly narrow road up to the cottage! Its position on a steep hillside means stunning views across to the village perched across the valley, and also east to the Apuan Alps. The setting is spectacular, and we loved the terraces and lots of outdoor furniture on different levels, and having a private pool, although a plunge is only for the brave! And a hammock too - fantastic!
The house has been set up with care and quality, with a well equipped kitchen and bathroom, a log burner, books, and a big TV, though unnecessary for us.
The owner’s family have two restaurants in Bocca di Magra, which are delightful, especially Ciccio in the prime position overlooking the sea and marina. The Carrefour Express in the lower village has all you could want for meals at home.
A Casa Guelfi stay feels like a treat. Fling open your bedroom shutters and revel in your luck!

Casa Guelfi is set in the most perfect secluded location offering a total escape from reality. Wendy and her husband were friendly and helpful hosts and gave us ideas of areas to visit and helped with a booking for a local restaurant. There is so much to explore around this area and so many places of natural beauty or you can just soak up the sun, look at the amazing view and sample the local food and wine. We enjoyed our daily trips to the local pastry shop in Ameglia for a Negroni and Spagliato and felt we were getting some exercise with the steep walk back to Casa Guelfi.

My only note of guidance, as others have also mentioned is if you are hiring a car, then hire a very small car. The road up to Casa Guelfi is extremely steep and narrow and can be very tricky to navigate in a larger car.

We had a wonderful week away and would highly recommend Casa Guelfi.

+ve Location - stunning views & close to many lovely and varied towns by car. Charming little house with a perfectly sized pool for 2. Spacious patio area with ample choice of full sun or full shade areas till late evening. Spacious and modern kitchen and 3 choices of dining area. Spacious bathroom. Comfy bed and good bedroom storage. Wonderful hosts. Really helpful and on hand but not at all overbearing. It is your choice to be in contact with the hosts or not. Mario is a very interesting, knowledgable man , who went above and beyond to make our stay amazing.

-ve I don’t wish to be negative as we had such a lovely time but to be helpful, especially as Wendy is planning to increase the price, I will note a couple of things here.
The parasol ( which will seem petty) was awful. It was very old, dirty and ripped and wasn’t a pleasure to have up. Quite a few light bulbs weren’t working - mainly around bathroom mirror We couldn’t get the socket by the toaster to work. The bedroom patio had no appeal so we didn’t use it. Perhaps a nice parasol there and a pot of lavender or something would be an easy fix. The garden was untidy and overgrown with weeds. Grass was short but everywhere else needed a good tidy up. The bathroom was great but not to my taste - I feel the style is very dated. The bedroom walls could do with a fresh coat of paint. The plumbing had an issue when we were there so we couldn’t use the dishwasher - I must say though that the hosts were aware and were trying to remedy this - they were extremely apologetic and offered us compensation in other ways, which surpassed the nature of the issue and added to our holiday experience greatly.
The negatives are really easy fixes but would add greatly to the property and experience.
I also need to add that we didn’t trouble the owners about the parasol, bulbs and socket so they are likely unaware and re garden, Italy had been in the midst of a heatwave and who wants to do gardening in that but going forward, this would make a difference.

We arrived earlier than expected, and in the midst of a heatwave, we called Wendy and she welcomed us and said of course we could come earlier as the property was ready. We were greeted by Wendy and her grandson and shown the property after a long stressful day travelling we were so pleased to see it. The property is perfect for two people and well equipped. It has a gorgeous kitchen, large bathroom and beautiful bedroom with plenty of storage. There is a cosy lounge with sky tv - have no idea if it worked … as well once you see where you are who needs TV. We ate at both Wendy and Mario’s restaurants and would urge anyone to do the same. It’s so convenient for Pisa, the Cinque Terre and many other places. As it was so hot we spent a lot of our time relaxing in the pool. The house was easy to find, but you have to negotiate a steep hill - they have a parking space in front of the house. We have so much we still need need to see In Liguria and Tuscany and I’m sure we’ll be back. We really cannot recommend this house enough and the lovely hosts Wendy and Mario.

We arrived at Casa Guelfi having spent the previous ten days visiting various cities - London, Paris, Turin, Genoa, La Spezia - so we wanted to end our vacation with a calm and relaxing time at Casa Guelfi. We were not disappointed. We travelled by public transport (and finally a short taxi ride from Sarzana), thus we did not have a car. Nevertheless, Casa Guelfi is in a great location. A short walk uphill to the old town, where there is a nice little cafe and some small shops, and downhill to the newer part of Ameglia, where there is a very good supermarket and some cafes. We also took slightly longer walks to Bocca di Magra - some excellent restaurants.

The villa is very good for two people, comfortable and sufficiently well-equipped, and the pool is excellent. A very good range of outdoor furniture and sun loungers.

The owners, Mario and Wendy, were extremely welcoming and helpful. Also the booking process and follow-up with the agent, 'Invitation to Tuscany' was excellent.

There can be very few people who think that transatlantic air travel is relaxing! Casa Guelfi proved to be the perfect antidote. Inside it is very comfortable and equipped with everything you need. Outside is also wonderful, and gives you many choices of where to place yourself, whether you want sun or shade, a view of the mountains which provided marble for Michelangelo’s sculptures or of the ancient village of Ameglia clinging to the hillside. Then there is the pool. A dip in the pool, knowing that there is a glass of wine or a beer waiting for when you emerge provides a most suitable end to a day spent exploring the area, especially if it involves climbing the hundred steps up to the village.

We really enjoyed our week at Casa Guelfi. The owners were warm and welcoming, without being at all intrusive, and we had a truly excellent lunch in their restaurant in nearby Bocca di Magra.

Casa Guelfi did not meet the expectations set by the Invitation to Tuscany website. There were too many operational and cosmetic issues which lowered the standard of the property. It may have been a high standard some years ago but not now. Location is ok but not brilliant, steep narrow drive only suitable for a small car, not much else nearby. Would not return.

Beautiful property with a view across to a hill top village. Well appointed with eating areas in sun and shade. Very relaxing . Property owner lives next door, very welcoming and helpful when needed but generally unobtrusive.
The property is up a hill with a narrow access road, as advised, i would recommend a small car. I would book this property again.

We wanted somewhere in Tuscany with privacy and a pool and not too far from the coast and booked Casa Guelfi in 2019 for 2020 so this holiday was much anticipated and it did not disappoint - the villa has so much character with a 600 year history. During our vacation we relaxed at the villa: we swam, read and cooked, we loved our spontaneous visits to lower Ameglia and the ancient hill village of Ameglia for coffee and/or meals. An evening walk through the National Park at the back of the villa took us to the equally stunning village of Montemarcello. We loved the spontaneity of our excursions and the friendliness of the locals but equally we enjoyed planning days out -which included taking a ferry from La Spezia to the Cinque Terre and we spent a day at Monterosso. We opted not to have a car for our trip this year and relied on public transport which was very easy to use and very inexpensive but boat trips were our favoured mode of transport. The buses back from Bocca di Magra ended early evening so walking back to the villa late at night proved to be a bit challenging after an evening out without the right footwear! Wendy and Mario were the perfect hosts during our stay, both kind, friendly and very generous. We were guests at their restaurant on my birthday which made the trip even more special we were. and are, very grateful to them for their hospitality and making my birthday and our holiday one that we will never forget. Daniel at Invitation to Tuscany was extremely helpful throughout our planning and recommended accommodation in Pisa before our holiday at Casa Guelfi began - the NH Hotel was perfect for us to travel from to Casa Guelfi and to Florence - thank you for making our holiday a success Daniel. Many friends have asked me for details of our holiday so I am sure that you will be hearing from them soon and from us again!

Mario has a lovely house, well placed for local amenities, supermarket, Local Carrefour Express, various places to eat and drink, and within a short distance of the estuary and sea, Cinque Terre, etc.
The approach is a little tight and can sometimes be off putting, but once you park up it could not be a better place to stay, Ameglia town is a short walk along a path from the house but does involve 100 steps.
This is the second time we have stayed, and we will go again, perhaps a little earlier or later in the year, it was very hot!

Everything about Casa Guelfi was perfect for us. We wanted a quiet getaway and finding a house for 2 with a pool, and as nice as this, is very rare. We took the ‘healthy’ walk up to Ameglia, and used the bus to visit Montemarcelo and Lerici, but really our trip was about having a relaxing time. Perfect !

The moment you arrive you will feel transported to another time. The old village and surroundings provide a splendid backdrop for this charming villa. All the right touches are in place from the kitchen to the pool. You will find yourself relaxing and soaking up all that makes staying here so memorable.
The local store is well-stocked and there are wonderful places to eat in Bocca di Magra. A dip in the sea and trips to Tuscan towns will complete your getaway.
The owners live nearby and are gracious, helpful
and readily available.
A delightful place to experience Toscana!

This is an absolutely wonderful holiday home. The view of Amiglia is magical, the pool fantastic and the house close to perfect.
Our hosts were lovely people, very welcoming but not intrusive. The House is fully equipped and very tranquil. The village above the house is so picturesque and mysterious with such intriguing architecture.
We thoroughly enjoyed our week at Casa Guelfi.

Just a wonderful place. Peaceful with great views of the old village across an orchard and beyond that, the white (marble) mountains around Carrara. A great location allowing day trips out to Liguria and Tuscany. Welcoming discrete hosts live nearby. Their pizzeria - The Garden Hotel on the riverfront at Bocca de Magra - was low key but with superb pizzas and memorable views.
