A secluded retreat for two
The Gardener’s Bothy was built in 1870 by Laura Henrietta Hudleston. With its handy location beside the Estate’s walled garden, the bothy was originally used as living quarters for the gardening team. Laura Henrietta developed the walled garden as a market garden and sold the produce at Keswick market, which still runs every Saturday and is well worth a visit. The romantic sacre-coeur (sacred heart) window matches those built into the hall that Laura Henrietta added on to the main house in 1867.
The traditional stone building has now been modernised and extended with a cedar-clad extension to provide spacious accommodation for two adults. With views across the Estate’s woodland and gardens, you can see a range of wildlife including our resident red squirrels - squirrel food is provided!
The light and airy interiors are combined with rich, heritage touches including golden yellow, greens and reds. Although it is the cosiest of our cottages, it provides ample space for two with a large living room complete with a log-burning stove, dining space and traditional cottage kitchen.
The spacious king-sized bedroom leads out onto a private balcony overlooking the woods and makes for the perfect space to enjoy a morning coffee.
The bothy leads out onto the walled garden and comes with a patio area for alfresco dining and a wood-fired hot tub.
