Nestled in the Estate’s walled garden

The Gardener’s Retreat, a traditional shepherd’s lodge, is located amongst the flora and fauna of the Estate’s walled garden.

Cosy and compact, The Gardener’s Retreat offers luxurious open-plan living with a comfortable bed, thick down duvet and soft Egyptian cotton sheets. The fully-equipped kitchen comes complete with Joseph Joseph accessories, Portmeirion crockery, hob and oven.

The shower room comes with a power shower, vanity unit, WC and complimentary all-natural Bath House toiletries.

Designed by Kate, the earthy terracotta and brown-toned interiors, offer a calming space to relax and restore within a quiet corner of our historic Estate.

Outside, a wheelchair-accessible paved patio area comes with outdoor seating so you can admire the countryside views or enjoy a relaxing dip in the wood-fired hot tub.

The gardeners retreat is a lovely, modern cabin set in a walled garden and as such is beautifully quiet and peaceful. The wood fired hot tub is a real treat and makes this almost a DIY spa break which is both fun and relaxing. Things to be aware of - the Herdwick Inn is significantly easier to walk to than the Horse & Farrier due to a cycle way, and does amazing pies as an aside. My only criticism would be that our one sunset was slightly marred by the gardeners mowing the lawn for what felt like an hour with the noisiest petrol mower and strimmer known to mankind. That aside it was a lovely place to spend a weekend and within easy reach of the Northeern lakes.

Hello Kieron, We are pleased to hear you enjoyed your stay at the Retreat. You spoke to my husband, Alan. He was on of the gardeners. I’m sure you appreciate that mowing is weather-dependent. You were out when they started and they had finisHed by 5.00pm When you spoke to him he said he wouldn’t be long but you could always have asked him to stop! All the best, Kate.

A perfect weekend away from the chaos of modern life, the new Gardeners Retreat has everything you could need.
Very secluded within the estates walled garden with a log fired hot tub for two. Beautiful bed linen, towels and kitchen crockery add a touch of complete luxury to your escape.
Thoroughly recommend a stay

All I can say is amazing and thanks so much. We stayed in the gardeners retreat and it was our little piece of heaven for 4 days so secluded and lovely. Our little dog absolutely loved it too!! I really needed this break as we’ve had a lot going on personally as a family and to escape this to the gardeners retreat, we couldn’t be more thankful for. We stayed in feb 2024 and managed to have breakfast outside! We most certainly will be returning and hopefully this year, thanks again x

A delightful lodge in a large and secluded garden. Fully equipped with high quality kitchen and dining room utensils, saucepans, baking trays and crockery (even a cork screw) and plenty of storage space. We were vey happy and content in this magical and still relatively undiscovered part of the Lake District. Thank you Kate and hubby for sharing your oasis in the Lakes with us.
