Tanllyn looked ideal for a big group of us on the Oyster Holiday Cottages website but unfortunately it did not live up to expectations. I think we were the first to stay in Tanllyn since major structural renovations, and it was very clear to us.

The wrap around gardens are hazardous, with wires, slate, branches and other miscellaneous items left in it, and they are not secure with the farm gate to the field next door that looks like it houses animals throughout the year pulled down and on the floor. We had a dog and so it was not safe to let him roam in the garden, and I would not suggest children are left unsupervised either. Additionally, the space for parking was filled with clutter so we could only fit 2 cars there. Beware it also gets very muddy when raining, which we unfortunately realised the hard way when stepping out the car.

The front and back doors are both very rigid and it took larger and stronger men in the group to open and close them, using their body weight to do so. I would suggest these do not meet fire safety standards and at the very minimum need to be shaved down or perhaps replaced completely.

The kitchen floor was filthy and the kitchen itself cold and lacking any real substance. As the days continued we realised how much it was lacking, from oven proof baking dishes to basic cleaning products. You will need to pack your whole kitchen with you to be enjoy cooking properly in it. The fridge freezer is not level and you have to be careful when opening it as food and drinks would fall out. Also, we tried to use the washing machine but when we opened it for the first time it was filled with water and so we had a minor flood. But there wasn’t even a mop and bucket to clean it up so had to contact Oyster Holidays to get the owner to bring one. A plumber came two days later but we decided not to brave it again.

Although the property is advertised as sleeping 8, the dining table only seats 6 and the living room only has two double sofas, sitting 4 people quite snuggly. So it meant if we were to go in the living room as a group of 6, part of our group had to sit on the floor.

The internet speed is very poor and it is difficult to stream anything on the TV. There are no satellite or freeview channels available, so you have to use the smart TV apps to stream. Plus there weren’t any log ins. So if you like to sit comfortably watching TV on your holiday, this place is not for you.

Two bathrooms are advertised, but the reality of the upstairs shower only trickling out left us only utilising the downstairs shower room which frankly was like a campsite shower room without a tile in sight. There were neither toilet roll holders nor towel rails in it either.

Two big positives I would highlight is that the beds were comfortable and the log fires brought a lot of heat. So we slept well. Just everything else about property lacked cleanliness and comfort.

It is clear the property has so much potential, it’s on a great site and is aesthetically beautiful to look at. But I don’t think it’s ready for letting out and the owners should live in it for a week or two so they can realise the essential items that need to be included when letting it out and what they would appreciate to make it more comfortable for when you are taking a holiday.

We left the property two nights earlier than booked (we booked 7 nights) as it just wasn’t worth staying there and it was a disappointing stay. Only if more improvements are done to the property and grounds would we consider returning.
