For a family holiday to Devon, Thatched, one of the four cottages at Higher Wiscombe, is perfect for up to six guests, set in gorgeous countryside, at the centre of the East Devon Area of Outstanding Natural beauty, just a few miles from the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site. With no traffic noise to break the peace, no pylons to spoil the views and no light pollution to hide the stars, Higher Wiscombe is just the place to escape the rat race and relax together.

Back in the seventies, the famous front man of The Shadows, Hank Marvin, lived here and always referred to Higher Wiscombe as his “Devon Estate”. There is even a plaque on the front of the farmhouse to celebrate the fact.

In more recent years, Higher Wiscombe has been transformed into four 5-star, gold award winning holiday cottages. Awards include Best Self-Catering Business and Best Dog Friendly Accommodation in England plus the prestigious Visit England Rose Award for outstanding customer service and a Green Tourism Gold Award.

There is a heated swimming pool and a games barn with table football and ping pong. The swimming pool is heated by a biomass boiler from May to October and guests staying at the cottages are given time slots for exclusive use.

The Higher Wiscombe cottages are surrounded by our 52-acre slice of Devon countryside, which provides amazing views in all directions and wonderful walks from the doorstep. Each cottage also has its own enclosed garden with quality dining furniture and gas BBQ's.

Stepping inside the cottages, the finish and furnishings are of the highest standards of contemporary comfort, with the traditional character of high beamed ceilings, well equipped farmhouse kitchens with range cookers. Underfloor heating keeps the cottages lovely and warm in winter and the slate and tiles floors keep you cool in summer. All the cottages have meshed Wi Fi and large TV’s. All the bedrooms in all four cottages are ensuite and the beds are made up with cool, quality Egyptian cotton linen. We can help with baby and toddler gear including cots and highchairs.

Accommodation overview

The Thatched Barn (sleeps 6 + baby), as its name suggests, has a partly thatched roof and has been beautifully restored to combine contemporary comfort with traditional character, featuring high vaulted ceilings, exposed red brick walls and old oak beams. The living room, dining area and kitchen is open plan, with slate floors and underfloor heating, squashy sofas in front of a wood burning stove, a large flatscreen TV and oak dining table and chairs. Thatched has Wi Fi throughout.

The oak and granite farmhouse-style kitchen area is extremely well equipped, with a range cooker with gas hob and electric oven, large fridge/freezer, dishwasher, Dualit Toaster, microwave and washing machine.

All three bedrooms are carpeted and all have space for a cot, with a wooden cot or travel cot available. One bedroom has a romantic four poster bed and ensuite with a roll top bath. The other two bedrooms can be set up as either a double or twin and have ensuite wet rooms.

There is also a separate cloakroom adjacent to the main living area and a tumble dryer in the boiler room. Thatched has a private lawn garden and patio terrace, with far reaching views of the Devon countryside. For relaxing and dining outdoors, we provide quality external furniture and a Weber gas BBQ. Four legged friends are welcome in Thatched with a dog crate and mat, bowls, pet throws and towel and treats all provided.

This is our second stay. First was in Flint, which we loved and this time we enjoyed the Thatched Barn. Higher Wiscombe is an absolutely fabulous place to stay for us and Henry our black labrador. He adores the 52 acres of fields to run in and the barn is luxurious for all, which can be hard to find in dog friendly properties. Lorna and Alistair are perfect hosts but never intrusive.
Perfect location with lovely seaside towns within a short drive. Exmouth has a huge sandy beach, Sidmouth has wonderful selection of independent and restaurants.
We look forward to staying in Thatched again next spring.

The farm is set down quite a long steep track, owners kindly offered to ferry our bags down as the track was very icy, not needed but appreciated.
Wonderful views, super comfy and quite close to towns but don’t expect to be able to walk anywhere too much, there is a honey farm along a lane with a cafe but not in January!
It suited us down to the ground.
The other accommodations are large, sleeping up to 20. We were the only group there during our visit, with possibly a further 25+ people on site I’m not sure it would have been so good, certainly not as serene.

My family enjoyed a wonderful long weekend in this beautiful part of the Devon countryside. Being blessed with unseasonably good weather helped make the walks all the more enjoyable (there are loads of great ones that start from the cottage) but even if it had been pouring with rain we would have simply huddled up in the beautiful open plan lounge and played lots more games, whilst enjoying the exquisite views. Well equipped with everything you need to cater for yourselves (we had three meals in) but also well located for local restaurants (we enjoyed two meals out using our hosts' recommendations). This is the perfect place to stay whether you're just a couple (Hank's Annexe is sublime) a small family such as ours in Thatched, or a larger group based in the Winery which we were given a sneak show round and sleeps 20, but can accommodate up to 32 around the indoor (and outdoor) dining tables. Amongst the plethora of holiday lets out there Higher Wiscombe stands out as really special.

This was our 8th stay in the Thatched Cottage at Higher Wiscombe. Whilst we have spent a long time looking for anything that is comparable, we’ve never found another house and location like it. The house is beautifully looked after, comfortable and has beautiful views across the Devon area of outstanding natural beauty. We enjoy walking through the meadows around the house and playing with the kids at the stream at the bottom. The whole family loves the swimming pool, which is also very well looked after. I think though that there is no higher praise I can give than just the statement that it was our 8th time going!

We had a fabulous weekend at Thatched. We knew it was the perfect location from the moment we turned into the driveway and were greeted by the owners. The accommodation is even better than it looks on the website and it worked so well for four old friends to get together and celebrate a birthday. The location is idyllic too and we all wished we could have stayed for longer. We’ll definitely be back.

What a fantastic place to stay. The owners are lovely and very quick to respond to enquiries before booking. The location is ideal for visiting Devon as well as Dorset. The cottage is spacious and very well equipped with an enclosed garden for your dogs, which was a must. The garden is enclosed at all sides and the area with the open fencing has wires between the planks which means the dogs could happily watch the sheep in the nearby field, without the worry that they could squeeze through the fence to go and visit them! It was also wonderful to be able to use the pool and the timed exclusive slots are a great way to enjoy it. Would highly recommend and happily stay again- thank you!

Thatch was a really excellent place to stay even though the weather was inclement throughout the week. It was very warm and comfortable, and (importantly) had excellent large beds of the highest quality. We all slept really well!
The location has superb country views across fields and woodland. A short drive takes you to great seaside places such as Lyme Regis (nice sandy beach and great restaurants) and Beer (Picorama miniature railway and traditional fishing village)
This cottage, and the other three at Higher Wiscombe fully deserve the five start gold rating.
We will be back as soon as we can!

As soon as we started down the driveway, I thought why has it been so long since we were here? Entering Thatched we were immediately at home and, apart from the age of our grandkids, it was as if we had never left! I had almost forgotten how superbly it is equipped kitchen-wise. We always cook most of the main meals and Luca, our grandson, even made bread one morning! On the two chilly evenings we were delighted with the comfort of the wood burner. The games room, particularly the table tennis was much used and very much appreciated. Thanks Lorna and Alistair for your friendly welcome - it was great to see your again.

HIGHER WISCOMBE is the tops, and we hope to come back soon.

The cottage is in great condition with really good facilities and it was perfect for our company get together. The owners were helpful and unobtrusive and the wealth of information provided made organising a large gathering much easier. It was cosy in Winter but we hope to come in the warmer months next time so we can make use of the pool!

This was the perfect location to celebrate my 60th Birthday with family and close friends. The hosts recommended outside caterers that were familiar with the properties' facilities (Amanda) and they provided the most delicious 3-course meal for my guests on the Saturday night and cleared away too! The housekeeper Elaine was very friendly and on-hand to support any queries we had, for example, where could we find an ironing boards!
A fabulous time was had by all and the venue certainly added to their experience!
What a find! Thank you so much! Michelle

Our 5th (or is it 6th?) stay at The Thatched Barn was wonderful as usual. For us, it’s like coming home. Alistair and Lorna are always so welcoming, anticipating and attending to all our needs. I really can’t give any stronger praise than to say that we have now been to stay in the Thatched Cottage 6 times in consecutive years. We are a family of 4 with children aged 5 and 10. There is no one thing that makes this such a great place to stay. It’s the perfect combination of a beautiful location, pretty and functional cottage, the great pool, so many things to do in the area and last but not least 2 amazing hosts in Alistair and Lorna. 5 stars across the board!

What a beautiful, comfortable and well thought out property. Feels like home from home. After hiring all Higher Wiscombe properties for a weekend away with family, to celebrate a wedding, I can honestly say these properties are faultless. The views are breath taking, situated in the calm of the country side, a stone throw away from the busier life of seaside towns. The kitchen and ensuites are super functional and beautifully designed, the beds are large and comfortable and the show stopper of a glass wall makes this particular cottage so light and beautiful. Highly recommend!

We had a fantastic time at Higher Wiscombe in the Thatched Barn, everything was very high spec with amazing attention to detail. The fact you can have dogs and the space is so well designed for them is a real joy.

The swimming pool is lovely, great temperature, incredible view, nicely protected from the wind by glass panels and the slide is a lot of fun.

The location is excellent, a short drive to lots of sights of the Jurrasic Coast, as well as a host of amazing restaurants, many of them recommended in the cottage handbook.

Really appreciated the book collection, as well as the efforts to make your stay is low impact and eco-friendly as possible (Great to have electric car charging for example)

It is part of cottage complex, and Thatched is next to the largest cottage, the Winery, that sleeps 20 and has a large party space. If you have the windows open in the closest bedroom you will be able to hear if there's a party on but it's not overly loud.

This is our 2nd time staying at Higher Wiscombe, and we'd definately return again! We stayed in the Thatched Barn, which was a great size for the 6 of us plus dogs. The cottages are well equipped, clean & modern. It has fantastic views over the countryside & plenty of land to explore (which is great if you have dogs with you!) The hosts are lovely & always on hand to answer any questions you have. It's a fantastic base for exploring surrounding areas, with several beaches & towns within 10 mins. We were very happy with our stay & would highly recommend Higher Wiscombe!

We stayed in Thatched for a week, and it was just lovely. The setting is beautiful, with some lovely walks. The cottage had a lovely character and feel to it, and Lorna and Alistair went out of their way to make us feel very welcome - even our dog got a blanket, towels, and treats! Nothing was too much trouble for them, and they were permanently on hand if we needed anything. I left behind a very specialist charging cable and they returned that to me which I will be forever grateful for.
We've subsequently booked The Winery for a large family gathering next summer and can't wait to return. Thank you!

From the moment we drove down the long scenic drive our stay was nothing but magical perfection.

The only problem was having to leave at the end!

We had a lovely stay in Thatched Cottage. It was clean and well-appointed and although there were other cottages on site, you felt you had your own privacy. We found lots of great costal walks to do nearby. We would highly recommend it as a place to stay.

The owners were very helpful and we had a lovely stay. Plenty to do within an easy drive so it made a good peaceful base. The outdoor swimming pool was a real bonus. The pool was so warm that we made use of it every day, and not just the kids!

Loved the anticipation of what lay ahead of the long, pheasant-filled driveway at Higher Wiscombe ... there was a real sense of arrival. The Thatch didn't disappoint, it sits on top of a beautifully lush valley and we all enjoyed the tranquility. Inside the property was bright, warm and well-equipped: underfloor heating and thermostats in each room, comfy beds and dog friendly sofas for all to relax. I particularly appreciated the light and proportions of the barn. The living area accommodated everyone (5 adults, 1 dog) and the bedrooms are large and airy. The food starter pack and eco-friendly cleaning supplies were also thoughtful.
(I chose the barn as each room offers private ensuite facilities. Unfortunately, the hot water supply was 'temperamental' especially in the bedroom with just a bath. Lorna, the owner, is aware of the problem).
During our four days we visited Exmouth, Sidmouth, Beer, Branscombe, Ottery St Mary, Budleigh Otterton and Otterton.
Best walk: Branscombe to Beer stopping off at Sea Shanty (steep, slippery ascents and descents but worth it for the spectacular sea views).
Next best walk: Budleigh Otterton to Otterton Mill along the river, flat and pretty
Highlight for food with a view: Rockfish Exmouth
Farm shop/local gift buying: Otterton Mill, Sidmouth

My daughter, son in law and I stayed for 4 nights at the Thatched Barn. I don't think I have ever stayed in such a luxury self catering cottage. It is situated in beautiful part of East Devon with lovely walks around the property. We were all impressed particularly by the owners environmental ethos and action which is of a very high standard. Our hosts couldn't have been more helpful. I would actively recommend a stay at Higher Wiscombe at any time of the year.

Well appointed spacious accommodation, very nicely maintained.
Helpful and very well organised hosts.
We loved the timed slots in the outdoor, biomass heated pool and the use of the games room.
The setting is beautiful, looking out over a tranquil valley with deer wandering around in the evening. Busy life couldn't seem further away!
Highly recommended - we would love to go back.

The drive down the 1km private road to Higher Wiscombe builds your expectations of what it is going to be like and there is no disappointment when you arrive. The valley is beautiful and the 3 cottages sit very well together with the owners house with a large central courtyard in the middle. Lorna and Alistair rightly make a point of keeping this area clear of cars to retain its lovely character. Whilst the cottages are nearish to each other they still feel very private spaces.

We have stayed in the Thatched Barn 4 times now. The main living area benefits from plenty of windows to help you feel a part of the lush green valley and in good weather allows us to mix our use of the inside and outside space. The kitchen is well equipped and has plenty of storage. It feels like a nice relaxing space to be in. We like to use the BBQ and while not usually someone that uses a gas BBQ it is just what you need on holiday as gets going in no time. Outside there is also a small garden that the kids like to play in.

The bedrooms are generous and keep cool well in very hot weather if you keep the inner doors shut. Beds are comfortable and showers look nice and work well. In the main bedroom the on suite roll top bath is a nice touch.

Along with the cottage you get 2 x 1.5 hours use of the heated outdoor pool each full day you are there and this is a massive benefit to us as our 2 boys (3 and 8 years) absolutely love it. The slide is great fun too. Views from the pool area are great too. There is also a games room which we use a few time each stay. We also love walking across the meadows which are often full of wild flowers, and interesting insects. There is also a stream at the bottom that the kids can paddle in.

In the wider area there is so much to do for families and lovely places to eat at too within half and hour. Our favourite place to eat is the Holt in Honiton and place to visit is Pecorama, which is a must for kids under 10.

Overall Alistair and Lorna put massive efforts into keeping everything so lovely and we can’t imagine what it would be like thinking that we wouldn’t go back again. Which is why we have already booked for next year!

This is a lovely house to stay in. The spacious dining/ kitchen/ sitting room has large windows and French doors onto the garden and outside eating area. The view from this side of the house is of the beautiful Devonshire countryside - rolling hills and vast expanses of sky. The bedrooms are spacious and the beds are comfortable. We enjoyed the roll-top bath in our bedroom although I needed help to climb out of it! All fittings are of a high quality - the towels are fluffy, the bedding soft and luxurious.
The heated swimming pool is a joy, especially on a rainy day! Children love the water slide.
The hosts live on site and are very helpful and friendly.
Make sure that you expect to be greeted by dozens of young, suicidal pheasants on the lane as you approach the house!
It is all part of the charm of this delightful place.

We have had a wonderful week at Higher Wiscombe. The barn was very spacious, with everything you might need. The style and quality of the decor was excellent - a great mix of country and contemporary. The views were amazing and it was lovely to be able to walk through the fields with our dog. The outside pool was a real treat and such a luxury to have. Lorna and Alistair were very helpful both before and during our stay. We would highly recommend staying at Higher Wiscombe and look forward to visiting again some day!

Having spent the week in a part of Devon that we did not know very well ,we could not have picked a better location that is so central to the best that Devon has to offer.

Our stay at the Thatched Barn at the end of January was wonderful. We were a group of 6 adults, spending a weekend walking parts of the South coast path (Seaton to Sidmouth and Sidmouth to Exmouth), and we were so pleased to have found Higher Wiscombe as our base. Lorna was so helpful prior to arriving, providing plenty of information and also excellent directions to find the place. The location is idyllic, converted barns set around a courtyard at the end of a long lane, taking you deeper into the country side. The views from the Thatched Barn were wonderful. The rooms were all clean and comfortable. We loved the fact they were all en-suite and spacious. The open plan living room and kitchen worked so well for us as we chose to spend our evenings in after our long walks rather than venture out. The Sidmouth Tandori was one of the best take-away curries we've ever had!
Little touches like the welcome hampers (including one for the dogs), the recycling, wood burning stove with plenty of logs and kindling.. all helped to make our stay so enjoyable from the moment we walked in. Couldn't recommend it enough.

The Thatched barn is a great place to stay inside and out.
The views are amazing and the Barn is kitted out too a high standard.
We had a few issues that were out of the owners hands that were sorted out as soon as possible.
Will definitely go back again and may even go with a group and stay in the amazing winery.

We loved it! A much nicer property this year . Thank you for letting us stay in the thatched barn, although we had originally booked the Flint one.
Just a couple of points. The sinks in the ensuites are really too small for a wash. It's even difficult to soak a flannel In them as they are so small, and we didn't want to waste resources by having 2 showers a day sim ply to wash our faces!
The light in the mirror wasn't working in the end bathroom.
A great location, wonderful grounds and we love the pheasants.
These are minor points, and as I said, we had a lovely time and hope to be back, if not next year, then hopefully the year after.
Our best wishes to you both
Jill X

We rented the Thatched Barn alongside the other barns at Higher Wiscombe for our 40th Wedding Anniversary. We were able to accommodate 6 of our friends in real comfort, they just simply loved the barn. My sister used the very ample kitchen to prepare canapés for the whole party of 28 - which demonstrates how well equipped the kitchen was. There are three excellent bedrooms all with their own en suites plus a lovely lounge attached to the kitchen. Outside is a fully enclosed garden that overlooks the beautiful Devonshire countryside. Our plans went slightly awry because of the weather so we used this barn to set up our photographer to take all of our formal pictures - which again demonstrates its very ample spaces. I can't recommend the whole Higher Wiscombe site highly enough, this barn along with the others was of such high quality - furnishings and fittings, soft furnishings - towel and bed linen was simply top quality. I would definitely rent this property again and it would be simply ideal for a family. We won't return with a group of 28 again but are highly likely to rent one of the smaller barns for our immediate family. We absolutely loved our weekend and Lorna and Alistair were superb hosts.

I'm a couple with 3 young children, and I have to say that my holiday in higher wiscombe was worth every penny.
For someone who is used to city life, it was like being on a different planet for 2 weeks. I had no fears sending my kids out on their own to play on the fields, the whole area was just a big beauty in the hart of nature.
Alistair and Lorna are very friendly, and were helping us with all the interesting places in the area we should make sure to visit.

Higher Wiscombe was the perfect base for our family walking holiday. There were 4 of us in the Thatched Barn with 2 Labradors and we had plenty of space. The little garden was perfect and with the use of a field a few yards from the door, our dogs were happy. The local restaurants were all great with the Pig being our favourite. Our best walk was from Seaton to Lyme Regis and the kids enjoyed the beach at Branscombe. The only slight negative was the very poor wifi

A wonderful stay at The Thatched Barn. We were a large group and rented all three properties which was amazing. The views from the property were of rolling Devon hills and countryside in a beautiful location. 6 adults stayed here and they loved it. Overall the cottage was just what we required. Welcome package was very generous and the the dog welcome package was a excellent idea. The welcome for Lorna was very pleasant making us feel instantly at home. The cottage was nicely decorated for Christmas and all the required cooking equipment was available. The views were stunning and the dog walks long and enjoyable. The games room was used although the table tennis balls had seen better days. The proximity to Beer, Sidmouth, Lyme Regis and Ottery St Mary was helpful and provided variety.
Only minor niggles, the wash-hand basins in two of the en-suites were too small to be used for washing or teeth cleaning. The showers were however very good. The sofas were a little uncomfortable there being insufficient lumbar support.
Understandably the cottages were booked for next Christmas.

Great cottage, all bedrooms have a bathroom, big range cooker, and all the kit you could need. As said the view is great and the setting peaceful, with access to the owners files from your doorstep. Wish we'd brought the dog. Will do next time.

I took a group of 16 to Higher Wiscombe and we stayed for two nights. Lorna and Alistair are great , they couldn't do enough to help and when you are there they leave you to it (in a good way!). The place is in a stunning location with some great walks and some nice places to eat just a short drive (or cab ride) away. Where some places can appear a bit tired this was immaculate , clean and very well stocked with every glass and utensil you require.

One of the recommended caterers we had for night one "The Rusty Pig" were exceptional and the food of a very hight standard indeed.

Overall if you are looking for a high end self catering option at a really fair price then I wouldn't look much further than here.

Thatched barn is well thought out, tastefully kitted out and perfectly positioned. We could happily have stayed in the barn, enjoying the luxury, for our entire holiday. The views across the valley are glorious. Thankfully, the owners were kind enough to give us lots of tips about places to visit. So we did. And had a fantastic few days exploring the nearby area.

Highly recommended.

Our family took the all three Higher Wiscombe properties for a family celebration. The Thatched Barn was very comfortable and well equipped. The kitchen was perhaps missing a few utensils such as a colander and a mixing bowl but all the appliances were good. The bedroom nearest the boiler was very hot, the two bedrooms on the corridor do not have windows, only a door which can be left on a hook. We also could not turn off the heated towel rails unless we turned the water off. However, the underfloor heating was welcome when we arrived, despite it being July. Not sure if it was due to being on a farm but there were a lot of flies.

The farm is quite isolated and the turning out from the driveway could use a mirror as it is very difficult to see oncoming traffic.

The 30 family members all mixed in during the week and we had a wonderful time and enjoyed the warm swimming pool, the games room and playing badminton on the grass.

Special memories for us all.

We joined a large family group occupying all the accommodation on the site. We were in the Thatched barn and found the accommodation to be excellent. The bedroom was of adequate size with sufficient storage. The ensuite shower/wet room was generally good except for a silly miniscule wash basin. The shared living/dining/kitchen space was sufficient to satisfy everyone, comfortable and relaxing. Generally the terrain was was very uneven and typical of this part of Devon. A warning of this difficulty may be useful to future clients who may may have mobility problems. We enjoyed our stay.

We took all three of the lovely buildings here for a long weekend at the beginning of June - a party of 26 although we could have easily accommodated 30.
Lorna and Alistair (the owners) could not have been more helpful in providing us with "the inside track" on setting up the place for an informal supper on the Friday night and a dinner party with all of us at one table on the Saturday night (with dancing afterwards!) in the Old Winery.
My guests loved the fact that they all had great rooms all with en suites and could stagger back to bed as and when they deemed that they had consumed/danced enough.
The location is superb (even in the rain!) - we already knew it wasn't in a village (with pubs, shops etc) so that was not an issue but that is the only thing that could have made it any better as far as I am concerned. Everyone had driven down (loads of parking) so daytime sorties to the beaches and cliffs walks (and other sites in the surrounding areas) were popular.
we certainly hope to come back again soon!

We required a property large enough to house two grandparents, 10 parents and 12 children, with the added requirement that it could accommodate a lunch for 38 so that the extended family could attend a very special birthday celebration. In the event this lunch happened - with great success - and we had the added bonus that Margery's sister, brother and sister-in-law also stayed in the accommodation.

The sleeping and dining areas were spacious and very well fitted. Younger members of the family thoroughly enjoyed the games room and the swimming pool.

And Wiscombe Farm was a base from which we made a number of very enjoyable forays into the local area.

Thatched Barn is an excellent cottage with three very impressive bedrooms en suite . There is a very well-equipped kitchen and a comfortable lounge with lovely views of the surrounding area.

It served our party of 24 very well in conjunction with Flint Barn and the Old Winery . The cleanliness and attention to detail was very good and we were very impressed with the quick response to any queries

Would recommend it .

We went on a doggy holiday with my husband's sister, husband and their dog along with our two pooches and it was perfect. The enclosed garden gave us peace of mind, although the dogs didn't like walking on the gravel to get to the grass - divas!! The cottage was comfortable and well equipped. Lorna went out of her way to make our stay memorable and we would definitely recommend it to others- the view across the countryside was spectacular. Loads of dog friendly options nearby - whatever we wanted to do was possible with our furry friends. Last year's award was well deserved.

Thank you alistair Lorna and son. Dawson family and 2 dogs. What a beautiful barn over looking sheep. So relaxing and peaceful. Even with our dogs as they didn't bark. Easy to drive to places. Such as beer, Lyme Regis , otter st Mary. All with in easy reach. Everything thing you could think of was there. Owners live on site in the court yard off three other barns. But you don't know they're there. I would differently recommend this small complex of such a peaceful place.... only 1 negative.. which is windows at front of barn needs some blinds or voila. But this wouldn't stop me going back As we are looking to return this year. Thank you again for peaceful and relaxing break

Stayed 4 nights mid week in March - couple, adult son and two dogs. Lorna and Alistair who live on site are excellent hosts. Very cosy, warm and peaceful cottage with fabulous views. Special thanks to Harry, son of the owners. He was a star. He sorted the WiFi within minutes of our arrival and turned out one wet dark evening with torch looking for our missing border terrier who had ventured into a large area of ancient woodland probably chasing pheasants and deer! Lorna and Alastair also assisted in the search and kindly phoned the adjoining landowners. The dog appeared after nearly 2 hours! (She lives on a farm so is used to venturing out alone). Staying at Higher Wiscombe was very informal and there were no rules and regulations. Wonderful East Devon circular walks - book provided in the cottage, do try the coastal paths - amazing views. Exmouth sands lovely dog walk/swim. There are 3 double bedrooms but don't be put off if you are a couple or 3 or 4 people - we didn't use one bedroom but had a bathroom each and plenty of space. Only slight niggle would be the 2 hand basins in both en suite shower rooms very tiny and few more serving dishes would be useful. Beds very comfortable. Thank you Lorna, Alistair and Harry.

We had a big multi-family holiday (4 families plus close friends), up to 19 when all were there.
We booked The Old Winery and the Thatched Barn – this gave plenty of excellent quality bedrooms & bathrooms (all ensuite) plus living space options. Ideal for earmarking areas for games, music (we’re mostly all musicians/singers) and chat/chilling.

We felt very much at home as soon as we arrived and enjoyed a high level of comfort from the accommodation. We really enjoyed our stay there.
NB. Any issues we had (very few) were dealt with swiftly by the totally charming Harry, son of the owners.

Location-wise, the surrounding fields were ideal for walks. It is 10 minutes from Honiton, and 5 miles from the coast.

THE OLD WINERY - specifics:
The huge lower ground floor kitchen was the hub, for eating, chat and board/card games. Plus ideal for the big Games/Quiz evening which Husband & Daughter had prepared beforehand. It had a lovely view along its full length of the fields outside.
The big living room was great for TV, video games and more board games. And a second smaller kitchen next to it was convenient for snacks and hot drinks.
The 10 bedrooms slept the majority of our party very comfortably.

THE THATCHED BARN – specifics:
This had an open-plan kitchen and living space, which had a lovely view out onto the fields. And for those wanting a quieter time than the noisy late-nighters in the Old Winery, the 3 bedrooms here slept them very comfortably.

We had a lovely weekend staying at the Thatched Barn. It was warm and welcoming on arrival. The three bedrooms were all very well fitted out and each had its own beautiful bathroom. The kitchen/dining/living area is the focus of the house and was well equipped and comfortable - the log stove was a really nice feature on a wet Saturday afternoon! The views around the property are very pretty and Lorna, one of the owners, was friendly and very informative, coming to visit us on our first evening. We would definitely be interested in returning for a summer visit. PS Our dog, Mischief, loved all of the canine comforts supplied including hand-baked doggie treats, towel, food, water bowls and a very comfy bed!

Whether as a comfy hub to stay whilst doing sunny visits and activities in the area, or as a stay in and have a restful rainy bank holiday weekend, Higher Wiscombe is perfect.
Booked the thatched barn for a birthday treat for my partner, with some friends...3 couples, two with small babies, and we couldn't have asked for more. The true test of accommodation is when you feel like the owners have actually tried staying in their own spaces, and here Lorna and Alistair definitely have. They've thought of everything...superb kitchen, all the kit, a lovely welcome pack, all entertainment mod cons, tv, blu Ray, Hifi to take all that inevitable iPhone swapping that goes with group holidays...with each spacious double room being en suite, this was the clincher for us with small children, where you don't want to be creating bathroom bottlenecks for the group! Games room, heated pool and the extra kicker that it is all eco friendly operation...can't recommend it enough!!

The cottage was well equipped, and spacious. The view is amazing, and breakfast in the sun overlooking the hills proved a real treat. The grounds are beautifully maintained, and the pool was clean and warm. As the owners say, wifi is not great, more problematic for teenage travellers!
The owners are welcoming and helpful. As the cottage is a conversion the sound proofing between rooms is not great.
The cottage is well placed to visit a range of attractions, but is tucked away and is in a secluded quiet and peaceful spot.
Would thoroughly recommend.

Thanks for the review, much appreciated and thank you for choosing Higher wiscombe. Glad you enjoyed the holiday. As you say the wifi is as advertised, email and googling is fine. We are a bit mystified at the soundproofing though, we worked really hard on the conversions and the walls in The Thatched Barn are not the normal stud walling, they are breeze blocks laid on their sides. As you say it's lovely and secluded but still in easy reach of everything. Hope you choose to come again. Kind regards Lorna

The standard of furnishings and cleanliness was excellent. The layout of the rooms was well thought out with bedrooms on a different level to the living space. Views of the valley from the lawned garden and patio area were beautiful. The owners were very helpful in arranging taxis and providing general information and any few problems were quickly rectified. One small quibble would be the small size of the wash handbasins in 2 of the ensuites. However the swimming pool was a great success and the children loved the slide. Overall I would thoroughly recommend the barns at Higher Wiscombe and other members of our family have now booked The Winery for Christmas.

You mention the two new sinks in the refurbished wet rooms in The Thatched Barn. Once again, huge thanks for coming, best regards Alistair

As advertised this was properly dog friendly. We (and Leo the lurcher) very much enjoyed walking in the fields which the Barn fronted on to. Note there is a lot of gravel on the routes around the barn, which lead to games room etc. If your dog is the sensitive guard-dog type, be prepared for it to 'warn you' whenever someone goes past!
Bedrooms pleasant and all en-suite.
The boys loved the pool, and we made some use of the games room as well.
However...if you value privacy, be aware that all bedroom doors are on a side of the barn facing onto the main courtyard shared by the properties, and that side of the barn is all picture windows (no curtains etc.). You cannot move from any bedroom to the main living area without feeling like you are on display to all...
The peak time weekly cost is, based on our extensive experience, at the top end of the market. The barn itself is quite compact. Overall not sure the cost is really justified, in our view. Recommended only with these provisos.

Firstly thanks for leaving a review. I'm not sure what we can say about your dog barking when other guests walked by the cottage on the gravel. We have a really extensive website, that has hundreds of photos of everything we could think of, plus videos, including an aerial one to show how the cottages are laid out, and floor plans too. These clearly show that there is gravel, and we haven’t previously had a problem with it since we started operating in 2005. The Linhay side does overlook the courtyard, but there are planters by the glass and the window has a reflective effect. The living spaces of all of the cottages are designed to look out over the open countryside, so face the other side and do not overlook the courtyard. This arrangement gets many compliments, as the light that comes in combines with the high ceilings to give the Thatched Barn a real sense of space and fantastic views. While you felt the barn was compact, if you look at our reviews you will see that a commonly recurring word is "spacious", and with three large ensuite bedrooms, a separate WC and a living dining kitchen area that measures 5m x 6m we think it is a good size. Value for money? This is always in the remit of the customer to decide. We would say that we are competitively priced, and are always booked solidly in the summer months. We are sorry that you did not regard this as a perfect stay. We do try hard to ensure that all guests have a great time. This is not a second home let to cover the costs, it is a professional holiday business, and once again, we are sorry that on this occasion we were not able to completely meet your expectations. Best regards Alistair

A super holiday cottage in a beautiful part of England. This was our 2nd time at Higher Wiscombe....

We loved it, in particular the wonderful swimming pool and the beautiful, peaceful view from the garden. Its a lovely base from which to explore the area.

We rented the Old Winery and its companion holiday properties the Thatched Barn and the Flint Barn for one week for a combined annual family party and 60th birthday and 21st birthday celebrations. It was an amazing event and the three properties contributed greatly to its success. All the 32 people who stayed (plus the handfful of those who were accomodated elsewhere) praised the setting, the quality of the farm building conversion, the general levels comfort, and how well-equipped each property was. We self-catered for that number every night and we had everything we could possibly have needed. The hosts Lorna and Alistair could not do enough to make our stay a success (including arranging a sheep shearing demo for the kids). It would be difficult to praise the places too highly. As for location, we again could not have hoped for better. The hill and valley rural setting makes for views to die for; the three units are within 10 minutes of a Tesco and about 12 minutes of an excellent Waitrose; a number of charming Devon seaside towns are very close; and getting there is easy with a mainline station at Honiton 10 minutes away and Exeter Airport 20 minutes or so. Our guests from far and wide used both.

We stayed here for a week as a prelude to a seven-day family extravaganza when we rented not just this building but the two other sin the complex. It was a haven of peace when we arrived after a nightmare of a transatlantic journey and it continued to be just that throughout our stay. We are foodies and were particularly impressed by the well-equipped kitchen. The place has fantastic views you can enjoy as you eat the resultant food. Three nice bedrooms with well-planned bathrooms, and with the under-floor heating and log burner a very cosy place. A perfect home for the week.

We took a group of 26 leaders from the Lighthouse Church in Poole away for a 3 day training session. We found Higher Wiscombe to be perfect for our needs and Lorna and Alistair were excellent landlords, friendly and always available to help out with queries. The accommodation has been renovated to the highest standard with each of the 16 rooms having a large comfortable bed and its own high spec bathroom. The only slight disappointment was that the underfloor heating was so efficient that we never got to use the wood burning stoves! Higher Wiscombe is a truly beautiful and high quality holiday home - I can recommend it without reservation.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Thatched Barn. Very warm & comfortable. Can't think of anything but good to say about the accommodation except that it possibly could do with some serving dishes to put on the table. The location is good for local walking and visits to Seaton, Honiton, Exmouth, Beer, Lyme Regis & Sidmouth.

Had a wonderful week , the weather was good to us. The views from the barn were fabulous, couldn't have wished for any better, the beds were so comfortable!

It was a delite to see all the pheasant, I I have never seen so many in one place.

The only downside I could comment on, would be that we were not in walking distance of the pub.

Plenty of nice palaces to visit without driving too far.

No dought we will return In the future.

Fantastic place to stay especially for dog owners as there are not many properties that are this beautiful and with such high spec, even down to the appliances! The only down side was the schedule for the pool, but this was to ensure privacy for each cottage. We are just not used to this and have always had our own pool with unlimited access.

Guest from Bishop's Stortford stayed at Thatched for 7 nights in August 2015

Sarah, Thanks for the review, much appreciated. We are sorry that you found the pool use restrictive, with three cottages and a shared pool we have found it works best as this way, when you have the pool, for a third of each day, you have it exclusively. It really does work for the great majority and we do make it clear on our website. You can find cottages with exclusive use of a pool, there are some on www.premiercottages.co.uk - the weekly rate though will generally be higher. Thanks for the positive comments as regards the dog friendly bit, we work hard at this, being dog owners ourselves. Best regards Alistair

We are a family with two very young children and really enjoyed our time at the Thatched Barn. We enjoyed its remote setting and found it to be a perfect base to do so many lovely things. We visited somewhere different each day, sometimes two or three places, but still missed so much... A good excuse to return one day! The owners live on site and are lovely. They are there if you need them and are very approachable, yet it still feels like your own place for the week... We barely bumped into the other holidaymakers either! The barn is tastefully decorated, spacious, well maintained and the kitchen is well stocked too! We enjoyed a couple of barbecues with freshly caught fish and splashed about in the pool in the sunshine.... Perfect!

Our fourth visit to Higher Wiscombe, and the third in Thatched Barn. Again a 3 generation holiday that satisfied us all. Our previous visits have all been in April, so this was the first time that the pool was available, and our son, James, and his 2 children Grace 6 and Luca nearly 4, enjoyed it greatly, especially as far as Luca was concerned, the slide!. The rest of us were too chicken because of the cold wind!!!

Thanks again for great week. We'll be back!

My name is Jane Poole LL.B - Director at The Events and Planning Organiser Ltd. I was lucky enough to have my Business Card drawn from the bowl at Art4Macmillan at Michelmore's Solicitor's, 'Event' last October following on from The Events and Planning Organiser Ltd's, World's Biggest Coffee Morning on 26 September 2014 (Please see Facebook and The Right Worshipful The Lord Mayor of Exeter was also in attendance and supported this, 'Event.') - I had been most unwell throughout January/February but the weekend arrived to stay at Higher Wiscombe at the end of February. This was the start of my much needed recovery. I took my mother (82) and my daughter (17) for the weekend and it really was a respite and retreat for us all. I have seen much but was completely blown away, stunned by the sheer elegance and beauty of Higher Wiscombe. I can honestly say in all the World I have never found such a relaxing and peaceful place. It was as much about the ambience and 'feel' of Higher Wiscombe as it was about its outstanding natural beauty. The accommodation itself was beautifully appointed and wanted for nothing. We did not find the outdoor heated swimming pool but can only imagine the joy of this in the more clement weather months. My daughter, Grace, is studying at Sixth Form to attempt to get into Medical School in London this coming September/Oct 2015. She was able to study at Higher Wiscombe and it reminded us very much of our old family home, "Copper Beeches" in Almondsbury, Bristol (3 16th Century Monks Cottages which had been lovingly renovated by my late father and merged into one beautiful family home). It was comforting, healing and exciting in a new way. Grace was thrilled with the games room, table tennis and table football and all the potential. It was also delightful to see other families, children and dogs just simply enjoying themselves - a children's paradise. A paradise for all. I truly hope I can get back there some day and hopefully soon - Thank you to all concerned - it was so comforting to my family and I on many levels and a potential joint business venture for the future too!! Xx

Excellent venue and location - thoroughly recommend it - particularly for a big celebration.
Local caterers are great and supermarket delivery of pre-ordered food made the whole experience very easy.
The Barn is very warm and has lovely under-floor heating - just remember to turn the thermostats down in the bedrooms at night.

Alistair & Lorna's family made us welcome from the minute we arrived. The long driveway is a little hairy and needs precision and timing if you are in a low slung saloon or estate car but it's the only difficult thing about staying at this otherwise glorious nest in the heart of some of East Devon's beautiful rolling countryside.

Upon our arrival the thatched barn was immaculately clean, well kitted out, furnished attractively and oh so warm. A lot bigger than the pictures give it credit for, this place is brilliant for a family or as we were, 3 couples.

With plenty to do made available to you and Lorna & Alistair's attention to helping you make the most of things or talking you though the ingenious ways they're turning the farm "green" or just simply leaving you to the quiet and peace of the place; we certainly can't wait to go back.

We all had a great time, including Treacle our black lab. We enjoyed the fantastic property immensely and explored the surrounding area including fossil hunting at Charmouth, cycling on the Exe, pub lunches, cosy evenings, even swam in the outdoor pool a couple of times and all thoroughly enjoyed table tennis and table football in the games room. All in all a much needed, relaxing break for the whole family with lots of quality time spent together.

The thatched barn was extremely well equipped and had the most amazing view from the open plan living space. Really comfy sofas and great outdoor space. Lovely to have an enclosed garden as well as all the acres to explore, especially having a toddler. I could let her in the garden knowing she couldn't go too far!
We had a very comfortable stay (although could do with better pillows. They were flat and hard) and the hosts were really friendly. We even go brought some scones, jam and cream by their daughter to compensate for noise from her party one evening. It has to be the quietest party ever as we barely noticed it!
The only thing I found annoying was the lack of windows to outside in the twin rooms. It was so hot and stuffy I had to open the door to the garden which wasn't a problem until the wind picked up at night. Also, not ideal with small children.
We loved the Eco approach without losing the luxury! Recycling was made easy, although some bags to separate it in the cottage would be useful.

Thank you for a lovely holiday

We have just come home after a lovely week away in mid spring warmth and sunshine at the superbly located Thatched Barn at the small but perfectly positioned Higher Wiscombe, Southleigh. Higher Wiscombe is everything it promises, stunningly located in the midpoint of a valley, private but not remote, the 3 cottage/winery hirings border 3 sides of a metalled courtyard with the farmhouse and covered barn on the 4th. Once you have found the turning off the road and dropped down into the valley through bluebell covered fields, negotiated the sheep and the car defying antics of the Trois Amigos (3 juvenile pheasants) you arrive at the "complex" over cattle grids onto crunchy gravel, all cottages have their dedicated parking slots conveniently located next to the accom and at least 2-3 other doors to meet H&S etc. The Thatched Barn has at its heart a massive open plan conservatory with walls Living/Dining Kitchen area leading onto the large (size of stone) gravelled outdoor area, with seating and also grassy knoll which 2 of the bedrooms look over/have doors, the third bedroom is the 4 poster room that looks out into the main courtyard. Lots of space, good size en-suites and rooms, extra WC and separate boiler room with utilitarian goods and the large glass walled corridor with space for shoes, boots coated etc provided lovely afternoon and evening light into the main body of the cottage. Excellent white good provision, large digital (LG) TV, disc player and radio etc as per brochure. Superb Information pack(s) plus a local produce Welcome pack ( including eggs) for both humans and canine and the promised Ecover cleaning bits, hand washes (2), tea towels etc but oddly we found no hand towel for the kitchen, foil nor sugar for the welcome cuppa. On the whole the rooms, bathrooms were clean and fresh, but and its a but there were a number of cream paint drops on the slate tiles in the hallways, a few cream paint flecks on a dressing table (4 poster room) and a few small maintenance niggles that need attention, there is no method to easily advise such. The recycling is comprehensive and well labelled at the point of recycle, it is for the benefit of all, but each county has its own processes and procedures and often different acceptances, exclusions and coloured bins too, which can confuse. Overall well located, appointed and comfortable, we fully appreciate that maintenance and deep cleans etc are ongoing and managed in-between occupations it would help to have a feedback form in situ, not just this e-version that is public, which now appears like a 'Things that niggled me List'! Please could you feature the local honey too from The Basterfield's at Blackbury Farm, they sell at the door but we contacted by email thanks to the excellent ( for us) wifi, phone reception for O2 ok halfway down the field and we also had a good view of the annual Wiscombe Hill Climb weekend, a bonus for ( minor) petrol heads. Thanks for a lovely week.

Elisabeth, Thanks for the detailed feedback. We will work our way through your notes and suggestions each time we do a changeover. There were some paint flecks on the slate floor in the cottage which happened during the recent complete repainting of the cottage, and they should not have been there. We did use a feedback form until a about a year ago, but few filled them in, so they fell into disuse. We will try putting them out again, but most guests just pop up and let us know and we can sort things pretty quickly normally. Best regards Alistair

We had a wonderful half term week staying in Thatch Barn. A complete home from home ... everything there you could possibly need, but with the added luxuries of under floor heating, a roll top bath and four poster bed to name just a few! Lorna and Alistair were so welcoming and helpful, without being intrusive. Didn't want to leave!

We had a very lovely & relaxing five days, which was our reason for the break, even though we picked the wrong week with the weather being really bad. We used this as more of an excuse to watch dvd's and read our books, in a lovely setting.

The Thatched Barn is very nicely designed and we were very comfortable. Just my taste. Having bathrooms to each bedroom was lovely although we only used two of them. The rooms were all a good size and the Underfloor heating kept us cosy throughout the cottage, often making us having to turn it down. Everything was clean, a few cobwebs and dust in the lighting in the sitting room if you were going for perfection but we thought everything was nicely designed and furnished. Good for us and the dog. Also we have to mention the amazing views, the location of the cottage is just right. Cottage is also equipped with everything you could need.

Website and communication beforehand was very extensive and useful. Very friendly owners. The dog section in particular.

We took my 10 month old Labrador and thought the dog package I.e. crate, towel, bowls etc was very well organised. A great bonus. I would highly recommend this cottage for someone with a dog looking for security in a small garden to let them out on their own and walks on the doorstep. We didn't come across any livestock or other dogs and it was all very relaxing. I would suggest providing more throws for the sofa's so we didn't have to keep her on one all week, but very thoughtful approach by dog owners.

We didn't really see anyone else during our stay although the cottages and owners are quite close which was good, sometimes this can put you off a property when looking. Having a large party of people in the bigger cottage in summer might be an issue if you are there for a quiet week.

There were a few things that might help the owners, just things we thought might be useful. The drive way was really difficult for a low bearing car on the sleeping policeman, could easily cause some damage at the lowest of speeds and could prove to be a costly holiday. We had huge winds during our stay and could feel it coming through the doors and windows, the owner picked up on this during the initial welcome though. The duvet stuck out of the cover in one of the rooms and clearly didn't fit, i didn't mind to much but didn't look to great. We were expecting, although luckily came equipped ourselves, there to be coffee and milk in addition to the tea bags and there was no salt/pepper on arrival. We also had big problems with mobile network (although the website was very extensive and useful this wasn't mentioned) and there wasn't a phone to use, although the owners let us borrow theirs kindly on one occasion. I would have been happy to pay for any calls or use a payphone with the ability to take incoming calls. I understand it's a rural location regarding mobiles but having access frequently to a landline would have been so much easier for us, and family not with us. My husband couldn't join us and my father was coming down during a stormy night so it was quite difficult to only be able to contact people by email. The weather made this more of a problem I appreciate. The only other comment would be the recycling, very happy to see something in place but it was very complicated indeed. We thought we had it but then on leaving the labels above the bins which we had been reading all week to ensure we were doing things right didn't coincide with the labels inside of the lids when you went to use them. As it was so specific I think some written guidance or colour coding would have been useful, we left a few bags tied up in the cottage as we were just confused & didn't want to disturb the owners by asking on departing.

We would recommend this as somewhere lovely to stay, particularly if you have dogs. The larger cottage would definitely be somewhere to consider for large family/friends holidays and we would consider coming back to the thatched barn again for sure. The price was top end but a great cottage, wouldn't put me off returning out of season.

Thanks for the review, very helpful. Really glad you and the puppy enjoyed the dog package. To take your other comments, the driveway has what look like speed bumps, but are in fact flood defences. We are softening these as soon as we can to make them easier on very low cars, but if taken at low speed are OK. We've had all kinds of sportscars down without problems. Should be done by end of February. The week you stayed we had winds gusting at nearly 100mph and this will have had an effect on drafts through the doors. Previously this had not been noticed as we have not had such high winds for years. We will attend to this promptly. We currently don't get all mobile networks in the cottages, Vodafone and BT are the weakest and they can only be received about half way up the drive. We do have phones for guests on a pay as you go basis. We were available at all times to provide telephone connectivity as we recognised the severity of the conditions. Lastly the recycling, we have a large dedicated recycling area, about ten yards from That Thatched Barn parking, large clean bins, clearly marked. glass, cardboard, tins, Tetra pak and plastic, with special bin for dog waste. We'll check to see if there is anything contradictory anywhere, but that's where we ask guests to take recycling. We are really sorry that you came to the cottage for the worst weeks weather that we can remember and apologise that we did not meet every expectation. All comments have been noted and we were already dealing with the drive, will address the door draft, and will check into any mixed messages on the recycling. Thanks again for your feedback.

We had an amazing time at Higher Wiscombe over a long weekend to celebrate my 30th birthday. We had all three properties which meant the 32 of us could really spread out and relax when we wanted, but also be together in the bigger rooms in the Old Winery which were just fantastic! We had a drinks 'reception' in the Thatched Barn on the Saturday night followed by a curry buffet by Linzi Barbor (which was delicious!) in the Old Winery and played music/danced in the Dining Room downstairs was was brilliant. This all worked perfectly and we couldn't have had a better setting! It is unbelievable that all the rooms are so comfortable and have very modern en suites - country luxury!

The property and location are amazing. The standard of finish throughout is of excellent quality and caters really well for large groups especially having ensuite to each room. The space the old winery offeres was excellent to host 20 people for my 50th birthday in both the dining area and lounge. Laurna and Alistairs customer service is superb and Laurna had a very warm welcomne when we arrived explaining everthing we needed to know to make our stay speacial. When I was let down at the last minute with outside catering they could not do enough to reasure me that another could be sourced and Thelma Selway was reccommended. What a lovely lady she was and so accommodating with menu choices and her food was excellent.

Every last detail is thought of to make your stay special and relaxing and I could not have picked anywhere better to celebrate my 50th birthday

We decided to get away from London at the last minute as usual and found this amazing place by sheer luck. The cottage is warm and welcoming when we arrived and very well equipped. The owners Lorna and Alistair even prepared bowls and toys for our dogs. We had a very relaxing few days. Thank you Lorna and Alistair
