Overdale Cottage is a delightful stone built semi detached cottage within the pretty village of Harome. It sleeps 4 guests, with a spacious sitting room leather Stressless chairs (two), and a leather settee with open fire (please bring your own logs / fuel), TV and DVD player, along with some books, board games. There is a lovely dining room, and separate kitchen which overlooks the large doggy proof back garden and countryside beyond. There is a dishwasher, washing machine, kettle, toaster, microwave with a ceramic hob and single oven, along with glasses, cutlery and crockery. There is a BBQ in the outside storage shed which can also store bicycles, fishing tackle or walking boots / wellies, or other bits and bobs!

Lovely cottage, lovely quiet location. A great getaway from fireworks. Dogs loved the garden but not so happy at having to remain downstairs at night.

This is a lovely review for Overdale cottage thank you. We do request dogs on holiday live downstairs as we do have guests staying who do not have pets, and if dogs sleep on our beds / duvets it is difficult to remove all the hairs. We have to consider our guests who stay who have do not have pets, or have pet allergies too. Dogs on holiday generally enjoy the enclosed back garden with lots of space to play.

Thank you for this review of Overdale cottage. We are pleased that our guests enjoyed their stay. It is unfortunate that our boiler kept losing pressure causing it to lock out. Our engineer had thought he had remedied the problem before our guests arrived but the fix only lasted for 3 days! He has since visited again and hopefully now the problem is sorted. We always provide 2 fan heaters in case of unforeseen problems so our guests can keep warm, along with the use of the open fire in the sitting room.

Blessed with great weather the cottage was perfect for the two of us and two dogs. Couldn’t fault the cleanliness, space of the cottage and long garden for the dogs. Situated in a quiet village but close enough to Helmsley for shopping etc. would certainly recommend the cottage and hope to stay again.

We had a very enjoyable week in this lovely cottage. Very spacious and had everything we needed for our stay (apart from a teapot). Cottage was very clean and comfortable, plenty of storage space and a huge garden. Good to have a downstairs loo in addition to the bathroom upstairs and we slept well in the comfy bed and peaceful surroundings.
A great base for exploring all that’s on offer in the local area.

Our third visit to this wonderful cottage. Previously only went as a couple but this time took grandchildren with us. They absolutely loved it especially the garden..brilliant for playing football and running around.
Overdale cottage is a perfect place to stay while exploring Yorkshire. The cottage itself is clean and well equipped with everything you need for a great holiday including washing machine, dishwasher etc. The beds are extremely comfortable too…Sue has thought of everything you need to make your holiday relaxed and enjoyable. With Helmsley and Thirsk being close by it’s great for shopping and if you’re looking for some great walks the North York Moors are close by too.

Had a great week here in this beautiful cottage in a quiet village. Everything is tastefully fitted out with quality bedding etc and having the freezer, microwave, dishwasher and washing machine really helps. We had a problem with the boiler but Sue responded swiftly and the engineer repaired it as soon as was possible. In the meantime Sue organised Jean to drop off some heaters so we snuggled down on a frosty night.
The location is brilliant with so many places to visit. Seeing Puffins at RSPB Bempton Cliffs and the Mallard and Flying Scotsman at the Railway Museum in York were both highlights.
A few miles north and you are in the stunning Yorkshire Moors National Park. A real treat for a beautiful drive or for the more athletic lots of walks.
Loads of great places to visit nearby and a cosy cottage to come back to each night. Perfect holiday!

We have been visiting this cottage since 2021. On our first visit we were informed that the furnishings were reduced because of Covid 19 guidelines. Since the restrictions were lifted, unfortunately we haven’t seen any difference in the furnishings. We have described the cottage as feeling sparse and bare I.e no stair carpet, no rug, no cushions on the dining chairs and the living room furniture isn’t really comfortable. The photos on the website provide a different feeling than when you walk into the cottage.
The price for staying is very reasonable but we would be happy to pay more for more home comforts.
Within the booking confirmation we were told that there would be a welcome dog pack, ball, bags and treat which weren’t provided.
Sue, the owner has always been very accommodating and friendly when we have requested to change dates etc. and the cleanliness of the cottage is of a high standard. We just feel as though it could have a more homely feel in relation to the examples above.

Aww this is a disappointing review for us, a little upsetting too really - we always say we try our hardest but nothing is perfect. Its a shame that we did not meet our guests expectations on this occasion (their 4th visit) however I do feel that if you look at our website you will see that we have never had cushions on the dining chairs, nor have we ever had carpet on the stairs (since opening in 2018). Our bedrooms have bed runners and cushions (as in the photos on our website) and we have cushions in the sitting room too (4 instead of 6 on the website photos). Our leather Ekorness stressless chairs (costing in excess of £1500 each, there are x2), and our leather manual reclining 3 seater sofa usually provide comfort for our guests as many comment in their reviews and many guests actually purchase them after having enjoyed ours. I am a little unsure why our guests would keep returning if they don't find the living room furniture really comfortable or why they have not previously expressed their feelings to myself so these could have been addressed or discussed. The rug often needs a wet clean so it may on occasions not be in the sitting room ( you cannot leave a dirty rug or a damaged one in situ) but there is a spare rug under the stairs. Our dog welcome packs are on order and sometimes these things take time to arrive........ We appreciate our guests expressing their feelings of their stay with us and we are disappointed to have disappointed them.

We found Overdale Cottage to be a spacious, well equiped and comfortable place to spend a relaxing weekend.

The dog friendly garden was indeed dog proof - our spaniel is a horror for going through hedges but the fencing kept her in check!

The location was great for visiting both Riveaux and Byland Abbey and the food options in the locality are fantastic! The Star Inn at Harome, The Abbey Inn at Byland, The Black Swan at Oldstead... the list goes on - very spoilt for choice.

Everything in the cottage worked for us. A well equiped kitchen, loved the reclining leather armchairs and sofa and the bedrooms warm and comfortable. Lashings of hot water and loads of lovely smellies available.

We bought some fresh eggs and marmelade from the farm stall opposite the Star - breakfast was sorted. Helmsley is a short drive away for other provisions and a lovey place to explore. 5/5 stars!

We first visited Overdale Cottage last year, and were not disappointed with our decision to return. The cottage, Harome and the surrounding area are delightful. We enjoyed walks, farmers markets, the local pub and, on wet days, hunkering down in the cottage with a good book.

We had a lovely comfortable stay at Overdale cottage. The beds, sofas and chairs were all really comfortable and the cottage was warm and cosy. Plenty of hot water and genuine peace and quiet to relax over Christmas. Helmsley is just down the road so lots of places to eat out and many places to walk and cycle.We didn't bring a dog but it is a very dog friendly cottage with an amazing back garden for them to exercise. Harome is a pretty little village with 2 good pubs within walking distance. We hope to return and to visit the other properties at Ross bay.

We have stayed at one of Sue’s properties in Ross Bay so knew the standard of accommodation we were expecting and weren’t disappointed. The cottage was spotlessly clean and well cared for. Very homely and we felt instantly at home and relaxed.
The garden is amazing, our golden retriever Wilson loved it and there are excellent walks right from the door.
Would not hesitate to recommend Overdale.

We are repeat visitors to the charming Overdale Cottage and continue to be impressed by the level of cleanliness and upkeep to this dog friendly cottage. It genuinely has a comfortable home from home feel and is a perfect base to explore North Yorkshire.

If you are looking for suitable accommodation to stay with canine companions you can book with complete confidence. The front driveway is gated and the huge rear garden is secure and is the perfect play area for dogs with boundless energy.

We wouldn’t stay anywhere else when we revisit this area.

This was a repeat visit for us, and we will be booking again. The accommodation and location suits us, a couple with two lively dogs. We feel relaxed as soon as we arrive. The cottage is homely , spacious , comfortable and uncluttered. Each time we visit we find somewhere new to explore, the moors, the coast, market towns and villages. The enclosed garden is a bonus for the dogs, and walks from the door are so easy. We regularly recommend the cottage to friends, especially those with dogs.

Myself, husband , and dog stayed for a week recently. The cottage has almost everything you need( could just have done with a frying pan). Overdale Cottage really is a home from home and is located perfectly to explore the North York Moors. The property is aesthetically pleasing and also very well equipped. Both front and back gardens are enclosed and secure. The back one is perfect for our very active spaniel. During our stay we visited Rievaulx Abbey, Helmsley and Danby. We would definitely recommend Deep Blue in Helmsley for fish & chips and The Cocoa Tree for amazing ice cream sundaes! There’s so much more we want to see and do and hope to return later in the year and plan on staying at Overdale Cottage again!

Located in the lovely village of Harome just outside Helmsley we couldn’t have picked a better spot.
The cottage was spotlessly clean and very comfortable. The dogs loved the massive secure garden! More like a field really.
The weather wasn’t great so we spent a few days chilling at the cottage and we had everything we needed.
My only wish would be for a carpet on the stairs and maybe a rug in the lounge to complete the comfort.
Overall a lovely holiday cottage and we will return.

This cottage is the best one we have ever stayed in particularly from the point of view of holidaying with a pet. Both the front and back are secure and the large garden at the back is a great space to play with an active dog. The property is very well decorated and is equipped with everything you need in general but we would have appreciated a teapot and did have to purchase more kitchen/toilet roll and j cloths. We know the area well and it's an excellent base to explore more of the North York Moors and there are plenty of very good places to eat, including the famous Star in the same Village.

Overdale cottage is within reach of Whitby, York, Thirsk etc.
Situated in the beautiful village of Harome, a mile or so from Helmsley (another beautiful village). It’s got 2 very nice pubs, both with award winning restaurants.

The cottage itself is extremely comfortable with everything you need for a great holiday. Sue and her team have thought of everything to make your holiday one you will remember for a long time to come.

This is the second time we have been here and it was just as relaxing as the first.

Another fantastic break in Overdale Cottage - perfect in itself, and perfectly situated for the North Yorkshire Moors National Park, trips to York and closer to home lovely Helmsley - and even closer, a dog walk which just happened to pass The Star Inn in Harome rather frequently! Just wonderful.

We spent a long weekend at Helmsley Hideaway in October in appalling weather but because of the comfort of our surroundings were quite happy. The cottage had every amenity and was warm and in a lovely village location. The village of Harome was quaint and the nearby town of Helmsley had charm and character.

We stayed for a week in this beautiful stone cottage, my husband, dog and myself. The cottage was totally amazing in every way. A real home from home, with everything that you could wish for. The theme of the property was very much of the countryside, with beautiful accessories and finishing touches, wonderful animal theme throughout. The beds were super comfortable, with lovely fresh quality bedding, which is a trademark of the owner, having stayed at another of her properties in Scotland I can vouch for the fact you will always have a good night's sleep. The living room was so cosy with an open fire, and comfortable seating. The bathroom was excellent with a fabulous shower and lovely deep bath for those wanting a soak. The location of the village is perfect, there are two fabulous pubs serving amazing food, and beautiful surrounding walks. Close by the town of Helmsley is truly beautiful and we visited several times. It is so easy to reach the coast from here, and Pickering is also worth a visit. The highlight of our week though had to be the amazing, safe and secure garden which our dog enjoyed to the full. We will certainly be returning to Harome Cottage next year. What a fabulous week!

What a great property to stay on holiday. My partner and I took our grandkids, 8 & 6 plus small dog. Perfect house and huge big garden which the kids and dog adored.
There is so much to see and do in the surrounding areas that we were always on the go. Harome itself is beautiful but very, very quiet. So much so, I was acutely aware if the kids or dog made a lot of noise in case it upset the neighbours.
We'd hoped to walk the nearly 3 miles to Helmsley now and again and not need to take the car every time we wanted to go out however the 2 mile road to the main road felt too risky as there was no pavement/pathway beside the road and cars could appear suddenly, going quite fast.
Also, there's no shop in Harome to pick up a pint of milk if needed so make sure you have everything you need before you go back for the day.
We had a fantastic day out at the Ryedale Show which we all loved and the sun shone all day, contrary to weather forecast so a brilliant day out.
The house itself is high quality, as is everything about Harome. Beautiful house in beautiful surroundings

We are really pleased that our guests enjoyed their stay in Overdale Cottage, and that it is not called Helmsley Hideaway for nothing........just hidden away from the hustle and bustle of the town, in a sleepy village........ The alternative to walking along the country lane is a nice walk along the Ebor Way footpath alongside the river Rye which starts just a stroll from the cottage signposted by the village duck pond...... The Ryedale show is always a great day out if you are lucky enough to be staying when its on, and there are so many other places to visit in the beautiful countryside county of Yorkshire.

We absolutely loved Overdale Cottage. So peaceful and the decor inside was beautiful. We managed to fit so much in, in our week away and the cottage was a great base, nothing was too far away. We really enjoyed Helmsley. The kids loved York and Flamingo land! My husband and myself are keen cyclists and runners and it was the perfect place to explore. We will most definitely be returning!

Lovely break staying in Overdale cottage for the weekend. Just my daughter and I enjoying a great shopping trip into York......breakfast at Betty's tearoom, shopped till we dropped, slept like a dream.......... just so you know, may be I am bias as we are staying in our cottage (its Sue).........but our housekeeper Angela does a fantastic job so I enjoyed some time off!!

The cottage is ideally situated for walking and as a base for trips to the coast and Pickering (North Yorkshire railway).The cottage was in superb condition and tastefully decorated throughout. A very long rear fully enclosed rear garden was great for dogs and the front garden secure for 2 cars.
The two downsides were a DVD player that had such a poor sound system we abandoned a film. The downstairs toilet sliding door doesn’t fully close which actually found amusing,
In summary, we would not hesitate in returning and spending another holiday in this lovely cottage.

The cottage was in very good order and it is ideally located for exploring both the Moors and the Howardian Hills.

The layout, hard floors, large enclosed garden with outside tap made it practical and dog friendly.

The cottage is about 2 minutes walk from a good pub and also a hotel with a quality restaurant.

Delightfully decorated and spotlessly clean, the cottage has everything you need for a good touring base of the area. a real home from home. Had a great stay over the Easter break at this cottage. The weather was unbelievable for the time of year as it was blue skies and 24 degrees! There is everything that you need when staying here! The gardens are great for dogs as they are large! Dexter our dog loved being able to roam free and play. Our 2 sons played football which was good for them too as there was plenty of room.
The 2 local pubs were pleasant and friendly although the drinks and food were quite expensive I thought. Helmsley is a really nice town to visit and there is plenty of good walks.
The house is comfortable and has everything needed and was like home from home. The bag of logs and coal was a nice touch to experience an open fire. I’ve always had gas or a stove so this was good.
I would recommend this little cottage to anyone and would definitely book again in the future.

Thank you for this lovely review, sunshine always makes holidays better................The two restaurants in the village are both Michelin starred, so their special menus and fine dining experience may always be a little pricier than other "village pubs," but a special treat when on holiday just a short walk from the cottage (Marco Pierre White was even dining at The Star Inn this week!) Recently returned from a wonderful week at Overdale Cottage ('Helmsley Hideaway', how appropriate !), lovely accommodation, decor and such a peaceful location. Oh and those reclining chairs, how welcoming they were after a days walking to relax with a cup of tea or a beer to recuperate! As for our 2 golden retrievers they would retire to their beds in the dining room. They also had the time of their life in the safe and secure garden.
Spring, what a time of the year with daffodils adding to the charm of many villages. We particularly enjoyed our walks in Farndale, around Thornton Le Dale the circular walk along Sutton Bank taking in the 'Kilburn White Horse' and Castle Howard.
Loved Helmsley, Thomas The Baker, delicious meat!, Gepettos and The Feathers for a meal.
Will be back, so more we need to see and do!

We have just returned from another lovely stay at Overdale Cottage. It is an absolute gem of a place, offers a great base for exploring North Yorkshire or just relaxing in the pretty village of Harome. The Gods were kind to us and gave us great weather for March so our dogs had great fun racing up and down the garden while we humans took it easy and recharged our winter worn batteries. Sue (the owner) is very helpful and friendly and makes the whole experience a smooth one. We will be back soon.

We have just returned from a lovely break at Overdale Cottage. It was very comfortable and was such a quaint place to stay. The cottage is decorated very tastefully (love Sophie Allport) and the beds were very comfortable. The open fire was great to relax in front of after a busy day exploring. The garden was so big and we loved watching a barn owl flying over the garden hunting. Harome is a lovely village and we had a drink in The Pheasant and The Star Inn. We visited Runswick Bay and Staithes. We had a super walk around Duncombe Park( great for Austin our springer spaniel) and we had a lovely day in Filey and Scarborough. The scenery is beautiful around Harome- Helmsley is a lovely place too. The market was nice to browse around on the Friday. We were so lucky to have had such amazing weather for February and our 2 teenage daughters didnt want to leave! We all just loved staying in the cottage! I also think the cost to stay at the cottage is very reasonable, thanks again.

The cottage was in a great location in Harome, just a short walk up the road from the Star Inn and The Pheasant where we enjoyed two lovely meals, and 5 minutes drive to Helmsley. Recently returned from Christmas in the Cottage & we had a fabulous Christmas!

The Cottage had everything you need, immaculately presented, every detail covered down to lovely Christmas decorations and gifts on arrival - finishing touches were lovely. We loved the fire - you can’t beat a roaring fire st Christmas.

Walks with the dog were lovely, and plenty of space for him to run around the secure garden.

Dinner at The Star is recommended - food & service excellent, as was lunch at The Pheasant!

Only wish the cottage was bigger as the rest of the family now want to come with us next year!

Highly recommended for a relaxing stay in a beautiful area.

Our stay in Overdale Cottage was absolute bliss. The cottage was so clean and cosy - everything you could need was provided and it was so warm, comfortable and spacious. The location was ideal and very peaceful (although it is situated in the village of Harome). The booking process was very straightforward and Sue was so helpful and friendly. We enjoyed a wonderful half term break at Overdale Cottage. It has everything you could want - and more - for a perfect family holiday. The village of Harome itself is very pretty and friendly, as is Helmsley where we enjoyed the wide selection of shops, bakeries, cafes and Gepettos, a very nice Italian restaurant. Overdale Cottage is perfectly situated for the North York Moors, the coast, York itself and further inland. We need to go back as there are some many things to do in the area - and we had perfect weather and were out every day, including swimming in the sea at Robin Hood's Bay!

From our first contact to enquire about staying at this cottage we have nothing but praise for our whole experience. The owner, Sue, is friendly and extremely helpful, even answering our email queries whilst she was trying to have a day out herself. The area is beautiful, the village is peaceful and the cottage itself is an absolute delight, it is clean, very well furnished and fully equipped with everything you could possibly need. Our two dogs loved running and playing in the large, enclosed garden and we have had a very relaxing short break here, leaving completely de-stressed. We have been home less than a week and are already looking into booking another stay. We are a little reluctant to tell everyone just how good this cottage is, as it will mean we won't be able to book in whenever and as often as we would like to!

Beautiful cottage, lovely quiet village location, it couldn't have been a better place to spend a relaxing holiday. The large rear garden has been enjoyed by many a dog - so its a real winner for a pet friendly holiday too.

Comfortable, homely, clean, top class furnishings and decoration. Beautiful village and many local visitor attractions, nearby Helmsley lovely independent shops and top class butchers and cafes.

A perfect relaxing week spent in the most beautiful cottage in a quiet,friendly, idyllic village. Having stayed already at Ross Bay Retreat Cottages many times, we decided to try this new cottage and Sue has not let us down, what a gem it is, her decor, plush furnishings with the most comfortable beds and the attention to detail are just perfect, everything you need and more. It is an excellent base for exploring the many historic towns and villages including Whitby, Goathland and York. Helmsley is just a ten minute drive and offers all you need with some great shops also plenty of quaint pubs and restaurants, Harome where the cottage is has two, The Pheasant Inn & The Star, both are Michelin starred, it even has the traditional village pond and charming church all you imagine an Englush country village to be. On days we didn't go out it was lovely to just cosy up and relax with the open log fire, our dogs had the best time in the huge secure garden which is great for sitting and watching dogs and children alike playing safely. The front has parking to fit two cars and is also secure. Needless to say we have booked again next year as there is so much more we want to see with the many Abbeys', Castles and stately homes. Castle Howard is a must see that we enjoyed, along with Rivaulx Abbey also the Yorkshire Lavender Fields. North Yorkshire has such beautiful countryside too with areas of outstanding natural beauty I found was breathtaking. The cottage feels far enough away to be peaceful in a pretty village but not isolated, yet close enough to explore without having to drive for hours to visit places. Its great that short breaks are offered too and would be perfect base for shopping trips to York especially around Christmas.....I'm hoping hubby is taking the hint. Wonderful time, can't wait to visit again. Thank you.

Enjoyed our stay very much, loved Helmsley which was just a short drive away, the cottage was to the usual high standard of Ross Bay Retreat which we have visited many times. Harome is a lovely quiet village, The Pheasant Hotel is excellent we had lunch and dinner there both we really enjoyed, The Star Inn was quite good too.
We will certainly be back.

We cannot recommend this cottage and the area highly enough. The owner, Sue put every effort in to make sure our stay was as relaxing and as hassle free as possible. The cottage itself is beautifully cosy and fully equipped - we especially loved the rain shower, the bedding and the huge garden is an absolute joy for young children. The area is a great base for exploring and we will certainly be returning at some point in 2019.

This review may be bias, as this is Sue, and we have stayed in our Overdate Cottage for our weeks holiday! We enjoyed our stay in the pretty village of Harome with some lovely walks and days out.
We visited the city of York for some shopping...........enjoyed a lunch at The Star Inn the City, visited Flamingoland, Thirsk races, went clay pigeon shooting at Cottondale, a trip for me to the Verbena Spa in Helmsley (shhhhh, while David took the kids to the cattle market in Malton!!) and the Steam Train from Pickering to Whitby to do some sightseeing and crabbing!!
There are so many lovely places to dine we were spoilt for choice but during this stay we enjoyed meals at The Sun Inn, Normanby, The White Swan, Ampleforth, The Staypleton Arms, Wass, Gepettos Italian, Helmsley, Feversham Arms in Farndale, and the famous Star Inn, in Harome!
Looking forward to our next stay........more days out and food (we do like our food!)
We hope our guests enjoy their time in Overdale Cottage as much as us.

I had the privilege of being the first person to stay in the cottage after Sue put the finishing touches into the the cottage. I was down to take some new photography for the website, and extended my stay in order to enjoy a few days exploring the Yorkshire countryside. I managed to pack plenty in... a drive through Dalby Forest and a walk to Bridestones rocks (kids may prefer to stop at Go Ape though!), a visit to the charming seaside town of Whitby (everything you imagine a seaside town to be!), with drive back over the windswept moorland. I could easily have spent longer there.

The wee sleepy village of Harome where Overdale Cottage is sited is just lovely and is a nice contrast to the bustle of Helmsley a few miles away; though I didn't quite manage to make a visit to its 2 fab looking local pubs instead collapsing into the stressless chairs with a beer... next time maybe.

After a frantic time getting everything in place it was great to have the photos taken and for our photographer to test things out in Yorkshire and have an explore. It sounds like she packed lots into her visit to Yorkshire and took some nice photos of the area for our gallery! Also seemed to have time for a relax and a beer!!!
