This charming cottage has 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms and is all on one floor. Newly refurbished, it is in the heart of the rhododendron gardens that surround Colonsay House in a very sheltered situation and is accessed along a short track.

Avenue is located within the Colonsay House Estate in its woodland gardens just a matter of a few minutes walk from its Estate Office and formal gardens (well worth visiting the formal gardens and tea room when they're open).

The cottage is pretty, has a drive that would easily accommodate two vehicles (handy for friends holidaying together) and has it's own, unenclosed, grass garden with washing line. A track passes the front of the cottage that is accessible for locals and visitors walking within the wooded gardens and further afield - but this doesn't make it any less peaceful, you still feel quite secluded. The only unwelcome visitors might be the midges at certain times of year when the weather suits but you can keep them at bay using the insect screen on one of the lounge windows. If you must have a TV to be happy on holiday then do note that there isn't one in Avenue - plenty of books and games to play, things to see on the island, wildlife, plants and wildflowers, beaches and scenery, walks locally and peace and quite to enjoy.

The cottage was very clean and nicely decorated inside and out, and very well furnished but, due to dual aspect of bedrooms there are no wardrobes - but plenty of drawers - but the double room does have an arm on the door that holds four coat hangers.

The cottage has a large, spacious open plan sitting/dining/kitchen with a solid fuel burning stove. The kitchen is very well fitted out and has a very useful fridge freezer but no extractor over the hob. Do note that the linked heat, smoke and carbon monoxide detectors (as required by law to be fitted) may all go off if you like a hot pan in which to cook your lovely Balnahard steak. The kitchen is also in the thin end of the open-plan space so cooking heat and warm air will concentrate there. One alarm went off (detected the heat of the cooking) that then sets the rest off! And it's not possible to silence them when you know it's not a fire. A mad rush of opening all doors and windows and waving towels around to get the air to move sorted that. So until an extractor is fitted just open a number of windows before starting to cook such things to make sure there's a good movement of air.

The cottage has one double bedroom and one twin bedroom which can easily accommodate a third child on a foldaway bed. There is a bathroom with a shower immediately adjacent to the double bedroom and a shower room with a basin and toilet off the sitting room. All accommodation is on one floor. There is a dishwasher, washing machine and dryer - not many self-catering cottages that provide all of that. This cottage has oil fired central heating. There is a pretty garden area, sunny and south facing, with outdoor furniture for a meal outside or just to relax with a cuppa. But note that the garden is open, it's not fenced or gated so children or dogs could stray onto the track which is used by estate vehicles.
The cottage has Wifi which works very well indeed. There is no mobile single in the cottage - I'm with BT mobile/EE - but if you walk to the driveway you will likely get a connection. Mobile signal is variable on Colonsay but there are spots where it s very strong.

The Colonsay Holidays staff are also very helpful when things go slightly awry with ferries - can sometimes be delays and cancellations. Departure was delayed by one day due to an engine fault but since that tends to mean that the party arriving for your changeover day is also stuck where they are, and since Colonsay Holiday shave a number of properties, I was able to stay for an additional day in Avenue - naturally a fee to pay but, in this case, able to claim back from the ferry company.

Had a lovely time on Colonsay made all the better by having such a lovely base in Avenue.

Venue cottage is a great place to stay on our favourite west coast island. The location is wonderfully attractive with easy access to numerous walks. The cottage is roomy and reasonably well equipped. The beds are comfortable and there was plenty of hot water. The wi fi was a bit hit and miss but not essential for enjoying a stay on Colonsay.
We hope to return for a third stay in Avenue cottage in the future.

Despite Calmac's poor service in getting us to and from Colonsay, this short holiday was made good by the helpful customer service and booking officer of Colonsay Cottages - Tanya.

Our first trip to Colonsay and we absolutely loved it! We holiday in Scotland a lot but this was one of our best ever trips. Avenue Cottage is in a secluded and very peaceful position in woodland with lots of walks straight from the door. The cottage is nicely appointed and has everything you need. We definitely hope to be back!

Looks great in the pictures and the exterior is smart and location great; near the beach and plenty of space inside. The Estate Office was helpful through the booking and arrival process which was also great. However, the interior is tired, particularly the bathroom next to the main bedroom. Poor ventilation as no extractors in the bathrooms nor the main open plan living space so cooking permeates the space. The main bedroom especially smells of damp. Had to rewash some of the dishes on arrival. The sofa is less than comfortable and we are not heavy people! All that said, the Avenue suited our needs in terms of space and location and it allows dogs. We just felt that we were paying top dollar for a property that could do with some interior TLC.

The cottage was in a great location, the beach was a 15 minute walk and the woods around the cottage had lovely evening walks.

The cottage itself had a nice big living / kitchen area with comfortable couches and a good stove. The kitchen was a good size and had everything you would need.

Be warned the track up to the cottage is in need of repair and you need decent clearance if you don’t want to lose a bumper trim but there is a car park further down if you don’t fancy bumping around.

The main issue was the dampness of the building that was apparent as soon as we stepped in. There was a strong smell of damp and after a few days all our clothing had a damp musty smell too, it faded during drier weather but never entirely went away.

In a cheaper rental I’d be a bit more forgiving about what is probably a fairly major issue to fix but, for the price charged I’d expect a warm, dry comfortable cottage and it wasn’t dry by any extent.

The cottage was good overall, let down a bit by the bathrooms and rather tired sofa. It could do with extractor fans in bathrooms and kitchen. It was in a great location with wildflowers, birds and beautiful woods literally on the doorstep. It might be a but midgy and fly blown in the summer. We love the island and it was a good base for exploring. We did not realise there was no TV but that was a bonus! The kitchen was well equipped. Complimentary entry to the gardens around house might be considered. The lunch was nice there but no gluten free bread and similarly the hotel had to be taken to task on same issue. The Pantry was more gluten free friendly. We loved our stay overall and might return to the Avenue. It was not really luxurious as described but certainly comfortable.

Whilst we enjoyed seeing Colonsay, a few things about Avenue Cottage disappointed us. The boiler was broken while we were there, an issue that we understand had caused previous trouble. It was very cold the first night and day, and then we were concerned about safety. A boiler man visited every day to check and top up the pressure to keep it going for the rest of our stay. The other main issue was that, on arrival, the cottage smelt very strongly of wet dogs, especially in the bedroom. There was a thick layer of dog hair in the door of the washing machine, and the carpets and rug had visible hairs. We raised this issue and were told a deep clean would happen, however, this only involved a quick hoover and a few sprays of Febreeze, which was then left with us to spray ourselves. We thought we might grow accustomed to the smell but unfortunately, we didn't. We actually dreaded the nighttimes having to go into the bedroom, which we otherwise left closed during the day with both windows open. Positives about the cottage included the location near to one of the main beaches and plenty of walks nearby. We also saw wild goats outside, which was nice to see.

Avenue was a lovely, very comfortable bungalow/cottage perfectly situated for seclusion, walks etc but close enough not to feel too isolated. We had everything we needed in the kitchen but I'd recommend taking a stock of essentials since Colonsay has limited shopping opportunities. The cost of energy was extremely high so be very careful with everything you use.

Avenue cottage in a very peaceful location surrounded by woodland. However this does mean you can’t open windows due to midges. (Couldn’t sit outside and have coffee either which is something we like doing on holiday) The cottage has a damp smell and any clothes you had in the single beds room smelled of damp when you took them out to wear.
However it’s a lovely cottage with a good wood burning stove. ( Bag of coal and kindling £20)
We did have a good holiday as the island was beautiful but we wouldn’t stay in this particular cottage again due to the damp smell and unable to sit outside. Well equipped cottage and great for walking in surrounding areas.

The Avenue cottage is in a very peaceful location surrounded & shaded by trees causing it to appear rather dark & at times damp. We enjoyed our stay on Colonsay & spent three nights at the cottage. If feedback appears somewhat negative it is because of our disappointment not to find The Avenue as luxurious as we had anticipated from the website description as “the most luxurious of our cottages”. Whilst the general state was clean, there was evidence of less than 100% cleanliness in various areas, such as some kitchen equipment, bathroom floor & towel rails, dust & grime in radiator grills & cobwebs behind beds. The beds wede comfortable & furnishings appropriate to a cottage, although it’s a shame there are some small stains on the lounge furniture. The general decorative state & paintwork was reasonable but with damp patches on some walls. In conclusion, to bring the cottage to what we would accept as ‘luxurious’, it is in need of some tic.

Avenue is very comfortable and practical.
I should have left a note to say that the dishwasher isn't washing clean - needs a rinse through with salt. Also I couldn't get the tumble dryer on - fuse? Need instructions. Didn't matter for us as only 2 and good weather but would be difficult if it rained a lot with children
Colonsay hotel restaurant battling on under a lot of pressure and providing lovely meals despite everything - much appreciated ! Thank you,

The cottage is situated in woodland, but despite there being clear areas around the property, very little sunshine managed to brighten up the cottage. Inside the lighting was dim and also felt slightly damp despite having the use of central heating that was charged on a pay as you go basis.

We visited the island in July so there were plenty of flies buzzing around outside the property leaving us being unable to open the windows. Every time we opened the door the flies were there itching to get inside.

The property was adequate for our purposes ie furniture and kitchen equipment, but we were out every day walking, cycling and enjoying the island. We would not have wanted to spend a full day in the cottage - too dark inside despite the lighting that was available ie ceiling lights and lamps. However, we thought that the property was short of brighter ceiling lights.

Before arrival we would have appreciated an inventory.

The location was very quiet though with little noise apart from the wind and trees.

Would we stay there again? No. Too many trees, not enough light, too many flies and damp air inside and out. Whilst there were mod cons ie dishwasher, washing machine and dryer, they would probably have been too expensive to use all of them as we had no idea how much electricity we were using during our stay. But, there was a washing line and plenty of pegs, plus a clothes maiden, just don’t expect great drying days. As there was just the two of us, we didn’t need the dishwasher, but we did use the washing machine twice. However, we just couldn’t get the clothes dry unless the dryer was used (we didn’t use it).

Property was located close to Kiloran Bay and the gardens at Colonsay House, both well worth a visit.

Finally, if carrying cycles on the car, beware of the cattle grid as it is in need of repair.

The Avenue cottage is located close to Colonsay House surrounded by mature trees. Any concerns that the trees would make for a gloomy atmosphere were soon dispelled. There is plenty of light and the table and chairs outside at the back provide a great place to sit in the sun listenig to the birds.
The cottage was clean and warm for our arrival. We were a couple but there is plenty of space for 4 people and has the great benefit of two bathrooms. The kitchen is adequately equipped and the wi-fi is excellent and a surprise given the isolated position of the cottage. The double bed was comfortable and the sittting area good for relaxing.
The system by which a £20 allowance for oil and electricity is included in the rental price and energy consumption above this is charged at cost is reasonable but means that you don't know the full cost of the stay until after you have departed. Our additional charge was just over £11 which was a relief. I should point out however that the weather was warm and sunny for most of our stay and we turned off the panel heaters as soon as we arrived. In cold weather with more than two people staying I would guess that the additional charge could be significantly higher.
We very much enjoyed our stay at Avenue cottage and plan to return.

We loved our stay in Colonsay in Avenue cottage. The cottage was great, easy to live in, modern, homely and well appointed. Bed was comfy (phew), the power shower really good, and the hallway could hold boots, coats etc. Lots of great walking and wildlife (we saw a sea eagle just 10 mins walk from the house). Would thoroughly recommend to those who like peace & quiet away from the hustle and bustle.

The cottage was very nice inside well presented but it was in the shade all the time because of the woods and didn’t get any sun inside so could be quite cold and because you have to pay for oil and electricity after the first £20 we were a bit conscious of turning the temperature up in case we got a large bill at the end of our stay but other than that we had a lovely stay

Generally the cottage was very good. Cleaning could have been improved eg cobwebs, behind toilet, dust in many places, drawers etc. Wheelchair access was difficult between car and entrance. There was a lack of any contact to check whether we had a problem. Contact was difficult because of no phone reception but a check by somebody soon after we arrived would have been welcome.

Avenue Cottage is a great location to walk to both Kiloran Bay (5 minutes) and the start of the walk to Balnahard Beach (3.5km) as well as being in the grounds of Colonsay Estate. It’s a little dark, despite tasteful decor, but this is because it is located in woodland! So if you’re looking for a hideaway as opposed to a sea view it will suit very well. 2 nights on Colonsay is a lovely, calming and friendly experience - if you’re out and about exploring the island you'll likely recognise other visitors and it feels old-style friendly (like the lockdown period reawakened in many communities!). Colonsay Hotel is stylish with great cuisine and I recommend a visit to The Pantry for the Colonsay honey and also Wild Island Distillery! Comfortable, very well equipped cottage. Ideal if you have a dog as woodland walks are on the doorstep and a lovely beach is 3 minutes away by car. Very quiet and peaceful location. Thoroughly enjoyed our week here.

Colonsay is a great place to stay. 17 days and only 2 half days of rain. Came back from Kiloran Bay looking like we had been to Barbados. Avenue is a nice cottage in the woods and was a nice place to stay. We enjoyed the beeches, Colonsay Hotel and walks around the island. Thanks to the Colonsay Estate and Hotel staff for making it such a good holiday (thanks to Humphrey the Dog coming to visit too)

I have been visiting Colonsay for more than 30 years and avoided this cottage as I suspected there might be a lot of flies because of its woodland location. However, there was no problem at all. The cottage itself is very spacious and comfortable. The only thing to note is that the two bedrooms are separated by the living room and a hall, which might be a challenge for young children who want to be close to their parents. It would be helpful if the Estate could provide diagrams showing the layout of the cottages as I have come across this kind of issue in other cottages. It would help visitors choose the layout most appropriate for their needs. Just a suggestion.

This is a lovely bungalow, recently refurbished, warm, dry and comfortable, tucked away in the woods behind Colonsay House. You’re only a 5 minute walk away from the Offices - useful if you have a query. The staff are incredibly helpful, friendly and efficient. One of the best things about Avenue is it’s location, only a short walk from Kiloran Bay. And it’s a good place to start the rather longer, but spectacular walk to Balnahard. After which, back to Avenue and a well deserved cup of tea, or even glass of wine.

Generally very good, but a several very negative aspects :-
Disappointed that Colonsay Holidays did not allow us to transfer, without a financial penalty, our stay from May ( when lock-down would have made occupancy illegal ) to July ( during the first available week of legal occupation ) . We were allowed a discount of only 50% of the prepaid amount of the May booking to offset against the full price of the July occupation. Other bookings made elsewhere, which had to be cancelled because of coronavirus, either were refunded completely, or enabled us to book at a later date with no financial penalty.
We thought that the cost of heating oil and electricity used during our stay was a little excessive.
Colonsay Holidays required us to provide our own bedlinen and towels ( without reducing the rental accordingly. After leaving the cottage, we stayed in two other holiday cottages. Both supplied bedlinen and towels.at no extra cost.
We were disappointed that access to Colonsay House Gardens was denied ( presumably because of coronavirus). We do realise that some, but not all, other places of interest were closed elsewhere, but in view of the relatively small number ot tourists on the island at that time, it would have more logical to conclude that the risks of opening the gardens was very low..

Avenue cottage is set in a woodland garden and is a spacious and warm cottage. What it lacks in views it gains from being able to hear nesting buzzards and watching bats from the garden. The kitchen area is large but could do with some ventilation, other than opening a window. The double bedroom has a very comfortable bed and having too bathrooms can be a real boon.

This is a great get away from it all retreat set in the grounds of Colonsay House and just a short walk from Kilorian Bay.
Avenue Cottage is in a secluded position a short drive up a good track from Colonsay House. It is surrounded by woodland which gave us our only real problem of the stay, because the weather was good we were inundated with flies every time we stepped outside the door which meant that we could not really enjoy the outside space. I appreciate that there is not a lot thatcould really be done about this but though it worth mentioning.
The cottage itself is spacious, clean and reasonably well appointed. The layout is excellent for two couples as the double room and its bathroom are separated by a door which gives privacy from the twin room and the second bathroom. Although the bathrooms are traditional the showers are excellent. From a mans point of view the toilet seats could do with adjusting so that they stay up ;-)
Staff in the office were very helpful with regards tide times and general enquiries etc.
Would definitely consider staying here again when visiting Colonsay

The coal we purchased was almost impossible to ignite. I would have preferred to pay for heat and electricity in the bill. We have stayed all over the Scottish islands and mainland and have never had to search metres for readings.

Avenue cottage was absolutely lovely and we very much enjoyed our stay. However, a few basic items were overlooked in preparing the cottage for our arrival - there was no bed linen on two of the beds and when we arrived we had two very tired children that needed to be put straight to bed. So it was not ideal to have to phone the office to ask someone to send bed linen over to us. There were no extra toilet rolls, and it would be a simple thing to leave a spare roll. It's not something that I feel we should have to ask for, especially when we have paid quite a lot for our stay. Everything was clean and tidy and the cottage was beautifully presented. I just feel that a bit more care needs to be taken with the housekeeping so that everything is truly ready when guests arrive.

Irina who managed the booking and the cottage while we were there was excellent. Cottage was very clean on arrival.

Cottage could benefit from having its windows open more. Smells a bit musty to start with. The wood/coal burning stove is good and helps with this.

Beds and bedding and towels are good quality and beds comfortable. Kitchen and equipment excellent. Good having a bathroom and separate shower room - both good. Sitting and dining area good.

Local environment beautiful and wooded and footpaths from the door.

Would we stay here again? A definitive YES. Island is wonderful with plenty to do and see.

Cottage is beautifully furnished and extremely well equipped. Situated in the woods around Colonsay House, it is a very quiet and secluded location, not far from the beautiful Kiloran Bay. Our only issue was with some dampness in the double bedroom.

We stayed at Avenue for 3 days with our young children and we had the most wonderful time. It's very secluded, tucked away in the woods behind Colonsay House. It was an easy cycle ride down to Kiloran Beach which is absolutely beautiful. The kids had a great time exploring all the woodland paths behind the house and collecting wood for the log burner in the evening. Very spacious, well equipped and comfortable.

Nice 4 day break on Colonsay. Wet and windy but not unexpected for November. Beach walks and trip across to Oransay truly stunning plus a golden eagle directly overhead - walked for hours and met no one. Internet down for 2 days but an island and BT engineer needed to come from mainland............refreshing in a way not to have internet!!

I was sharing Avenue cottage with New Zealanders. They seemed relatively happy with the cottage facilities. however, they were appalled that the cost of electricity and heating were not included in the rental of the premises. Also, they commented on the 'size of the bag of coal' for which the charge was Twenty Pounds.
I, ordered the coal and accepted the service of having the beds 'made up'. I made the order early in September. I received an
E-mail suggesting that I pay the outstanding bill before the 18 th June !!
