This charming cottage has 2 bedrooms and 1 bathroom and is situated on the eastern side of the island with stunning sea views towards Jura and Islay. The second bedroom has 1 set of bunk beds which are suitable for children. It is accessed along a half-mile rough track.

this was our third stay at the cottage unfortunately over the last few years it has fallen behind the standard people expect in this day and age and is not a cheap holiday its expensive to heat and the the very rough track has deteriorated on each visit its a shame because the views are beautiful.

This is a well-equipped, modernised, single-storey cottage in a stunning location, on its own with views over to Jura. Ideal for walking, wildlife and exploring Colonsay and Oronsay - and cosy if the weather is bad - open fires in both sitting room and kitchen. Only one problem: as noted in the Terms and Conditions, electricity is charged extra after the first £20 used - a practice which used to be fairly common in holiday cottages but is unusual nowadays. As well as the open fires (coal £30 per bag), the cottage has storage heaters - apparently on a separate system (there are two meters) but all electricity is charged at high rate. This can add considerably to the cost of the holiday as the cottage is not well-insulated.

My husband had sailed to Colonsay a couple of times more than 35 years ago, and was keen to return to see more of the island. We are so glad that we did - we spent 4 nights in Baleromindubh Cottage, beautifully isolated with outstanding views across the sea to Jura and Islay.

The cottage was comfortable and well-equipped, and was clean and full of character. It was surrounded by sheep and birds and a few rabbits, and open to the elements adding to the sense of being away from everything. Cold nights were comfortable as we had ordered a sack of coal that kept the kitchen, where we were happy to be, pleasant and warm. We used the water heater sparingly and electricity costs were all covered within the rental. The access track is rough but was perfectly usable with our small car if driven carefully.

The cottage was a superb place to rest between several long and enjoyable walks to outstanding beaches, some very local to the cottage. Weather was changeable but we were rewarded with the clouds parting as we reached the top of Carnan Eoin with its incredible 360 degree view, and then more beautiful sunshine as we continued on through butterfly filled Nature Reserve to the stunning yellow-white sand and turquoise water of Tràigh Bàn on the north east tip of the island.

We enjoyed a visit to the the Colonsay House Garden, some beautiful sunsets from the west coast cottage, and an unforgettable sunrise that flooded the cottage bedroom with crimson light. Our final afternoon was once again sunny and warm and we spent a happy few hours in Kiloran Bay exploring the headland to the west with its small coves, pristine sand, jagged rocks and caves.

Every part of our visit to the island was perfect, from the ease of booking to the smooth departure on the ferry. Four unforgettable days, and we shall return! Thank you.

This cottage exceeded all of our expectations - the photos do not do it justice. It's immaculate - everything you could need and want is provided (although if you really feel the cold like I do, chuck in a couple of spare blankets to see you through the chilly nights). The kitchen is fully stocked with equipment and the furniture is comfortable and cosy. I can't even begin to describe the views from every single room - it's an earthly paradise. The journey might be quite long, but it is worth the time to get here. We had a really wonderful time and even the teenagers got 'back to nature' and found joy in the peace and quiet.

The best spot for a peaceful stay on Colonsay.
Cottage perfect for two plus two children. About 0.3 mile of good but rough track to cottage, suitable for all vehicles except maybe a Ferrari.

It's quite difficult to give overall scores for this cottage - it's generally very good, but there are a few things that let it down. Most of it is great - the kitchen is good, bright, reasonably equipped; the bedroom is really comfortable, the bathroom is good and the shower has good water pressure.
The main thing letting the cottage down is the living room. The furniture is tired, particularly the sofas, and the room never felt warm. We ended up living in the kitchen as the living room never felt that comfortable. The heaters in the other rooms worked, but the living room heater never generated enough heat to make it pleasant to sit there. We could have ordered coal, but as it was May, we didn't think we'd need to.
When they say the cottage is half a mile up a very rough track, they mean it. It's fine with a 4x4, but I wouldn't have wanted to try it in a standard car. On the upside, once you get to the cottage, the views are stunning, especially at sunrise.
Customer service was generally good, but we had a really rocky patch around the ferry cancellations that was resolved in the end.

Baleromindubh cottage is a lovely place to stay (this was our third visit). It's cosy without being cramped, and a coal fire in the living room makes it cosier still. Because it's down a track, roughly half a mile from the road, it's very quiet. It takes c.35-40 minutes to walk into Scalasaig, so (weather permitting) it is nicely placed for a good walk to the Pantry cafe for breakfast (or lunch/dinner), the hotel, and so on.

I'm looking forward to going back next year, fingers crossed.

We loved the location of the property with sea views overlooking Jura and the Paps. On a fine day the nearest beach is about a 20 minute walk, and there are several beautiful sandy bays easily accessible. We had a wonderful week walking on the island and I would recommend it highly to those who love walking and wildlife. We enjoyed a couple of meals in the hotel and particularly the local string band in the bar afterwards (on Saturdays). Gavin at Gavin's pantry also produces a wonderful seafood platter on a Wednesday evening.
Our accommodation was comfortable, the kitchen well equipped and practical.

We enjoyed our stay. The cottage is very cold unless you put the storage heaters on but then it is expensive so you kind of find you don’t stay warm because you are worried about the cost of the heating. The electrics went and water stopped supply whilst we were there. They were fixed quickly but it was a little frustrating. I think the cottage would be great in the summer. Beautiful views and amazing sunrises. You will be pleased you stayed but be prepared to be cold or pay for the heating in April.

This cottage needs a lot of work to bring it up to acceptable standards as far as it’s environmental impact is concerned.
1)insulation of roof and walls.
2)an insulated jacket on the hot water tank (which sits in a void with no insulation.( which would also reduce the electricity consumption and cost )…the electricity bill was eye-watering, despite all our attempts to limit consumption
3)replacement of old heating system with modern efficient radiators
4) replacement of front door , which allowed rainwater ingress across the floor.
5) there are two coal fires, neither of which have a back boiler, so heat is wasted. The fires are in poor condition . Grates are broken. The coal scuttle has a hole in the bottom, casting coal dust over the floor.
6) on the subject of fire; the fire alarm in the kitchen had been dismantled for some reason, and although reported to a member of staff, it was not fixed during our stay.
7) There was no evidence of PAT testing of electrical appliances.
Despite all of the above, we love Colonsay as much as ever, and had a wonderful time with our family on our favourite island.

We had a wonderful week staying in Baleromindubh Cottage and it worked extremely well with our family of four in the cottage and the extended family in Baleromindubh House - so conveniently near but not under each others' feet!
We were lucky to have glorious weather all week and the views all around were stunning.
We'll definitely be back!

Superb location. Well presented, equipped and comfortable cottage. Only downside was extremely poor condition of access track. Had to leave our car at top of track and walk the half mile to the cottage because we were concerned about puncturing our tyres on the very rough ground

We very much enjoyed our stay at this cottage. Sitting at the kitchen table to eat, you have great views over the sea to Jura, and the living room also has similar views. Both main rooms have windows facing two directions, making them bright and cheery. We also enjoyed sitting out at the table and chairs set at the door of the house, which faces away from the sea, but gave it a nice sheltered aspect. The cottage was cosy, well equipped and comfortable.
There is a longish rough track to drive to arrive at the cottage, which was the only down side. On balance, the views and the countryside setting of the cottage would probably encourage us to return, despite the slow careful drive needed on the approach.

Our stay at Baleromindubh Cottage exceeded our expectations – it included everything that we needed for a comfortable few days away. The sea views were incredible, the quiet broken only by the bleating of sheep and the sound of the wind. The cottage is an easy 40 minutes' walk from Scalasaig.

We were originally due to stay in May 2020, but asked to postpone our trip as we didn't feel it was safe to travel at the time, for us, or the islanders. Colonsay Holidays allowed us to carry our booking over into 2021, with an additional payment of half the cost of the stay. The timing of the easing of COVID-19 restrictions meant starting our stay a day late. No refund was offered for the missed day, though Colonsay Holidays' terms and conditions clearly state that they do not offer refunds. This, combined with the additional charge for electricity, did result in a trip that was nearly twice as expensive as it might have been.

The pandemic continues to make life very difficult for the hospitality industry, and we chose to take a pragmatic stance regarding the extra cost. I would have liked to see more transparency around the rates used to calculate electricity usage during our stay – hopefully this is something that Colonsay Holidays will be able to improve upon. While our holiday did not necessarily represent good value for money, for a variety of reasons, the accommodation itself was excellent and we had a wonderful time. We hope to return.

The cottage is fabulous and it is our second visit.
It was especially good as it was our only holiday this year due to Covid restrictions and it was an ideal place to relax and unwind.
It had everything we could wish for apart from some beer glasses!
There is a disturbingly loud noise in the kitchen at times but I think this is the water tank re-filling !

This remote, comfortable cottage was in a lovely position, looking out to the Isle of Jura.
Although forewarned of the access track, we began to find its steepness and roughness difficult; the lack of passing places didn't help.
Despite this, we had a superb week on Colonsay, cycling, walking, exploring and thoroughly enjoying the remoteness and beauty of the island. The weather was fantastic too!

Colonsay is a great place to unwind but you need to be flexible with the weather and ferry services. Locals are very friendly. Cottage was cosy and needed to be. Catering in all places we visited was surprisingly good given the challenges of island life.

We were surprised at the cost of the electric despite our efforts to be very moderate in usage and the instructions for the heaters are not clear. The cleaners were instructed to leave the water heater on, which we did not realise for some time and was expensive to run.
The kitchen is well equipped.
Full marks to the cleaners, the cottage was very clean.

We had been to this cottage 21 years ago when it was idyllic; unfortunately on this visit we were unable to make use of the garden area because of the large amount of sheep droppings - even on the doormat in the entrance to the house. It was impossible to walk anywhere outside without stepping on it. Wellingtons were needed at all times. We reported two problems needing to be sorted out but nothing was done. However, the estate manager did bring a key one evening when we locked ourselves out! We stayed one night at The Colonsay Hotel and found it excellent: food and staff first rate. We would recommend this cottage providing that sheep were kept away from the house and garden area. They are lovely to see, but calling cards not welcome!

Baleromindubh is a well-restored crofter's cottage - simple but comfortable. It is situated in a beautiful position overlooking the Sound with views across to Jura. This is an ideal location to switch off and relax (there is no TV and no internet access). Colonsay is an exceptionally beautiful island with wonderful, quiet beaches (including one just below the cottage - though there is no path so you need to be prepared to explore). The Colonsay Holidays/Estate staff are very friendly and helpful (as is everyone on the island).

The cottage is very comfortable and well equipped. The double bed was wonderful. The views to Jura are excellent and a very quiet beach is a 15 - 20 minute walk away with some wet ground on the way. The track to the cottage is quite rough, passable with care in an ordinary car but would be better in a 4x4.
The cottage was very cold when we arrived as the storage heaters were off. This is understandable as you pay for the electricity you use and it did take some time before the cottage warmed up and it seemed to take a considerable amount of electricity to get it warm. It is advisable to order at least one bag of coal for a week at that time of year (early May).
Colonsay is a fascinating island with superb beaches and walks. The shop is well stocked and eating out is very good.

Lovely snug cottage with very comfortable beds, cosy fireplace and amazing location. We stayed with our two children and a puppy and all loved it - brilliant to have a break from screens. Colonsay is crazily beautiful in every direction and the holiday couldn't have been easier - groceries delivered on arrival, cafe and hotel for meals out, beaches, walks, bookshop, and nothing ever far away. Even the rain was good - gave us a chance to curl up in the cottage.

A good cottage for two. Three, with two on bunks, would have been rather crowded. Wonderful view

All positive except for the drive up to the house from the farm track, which, with the ditches either side, was quite tricky for a long car and impossible with a trailer.

Baleromindubh Cottage was an excellent base for exploring Colonsay - it provided all we wanted (including superb views) although for some the complete lack of comms might prove challenging! Colonsay and Oransay were magical - we really enjoyed our visit.

Everything you need for a stay - very comfortable cottage with a nice atmosphere. Lovely views but quite far from the actual sea!

We had a great week in this cosy little cottage, great location with stunning views across to Jura. A perfect place to relax and recharge your batteries. We experinced all sorts of weather, brilliant sunshine, 40 mph winds with amazing seas all of which added to the beauty of Colonsay.

The location of the cottage was fabulous. This cottage must have the best sea view on the island! It's situated half a mile along a track, with a sea view across the hillside to Jura, from every window (except for the bunk room) which also means it is beautifully light and bright. The cottage felt so clean, fresh and cosy. The Estate is obviously maintaining it very well. It's not far from Scalasaig and the grocery shop. And by bike, it's only about 15 minutes to the end of the road and the walk across the sand flats of the Strand to Oransay. I thoroughly recommend this gem of a cottage to anyone, especially if you're looking for stillness, peace and quiet.

Excellent location for us, only one other property out of view. New kitchen and carpets, nicely done. Stunning view, even in bad weather. We just used the double room, bunk room quite musty and cramped if you had two adults or two bigger children in that. As long as you take the rough track slowly its not a problem. If you want a lazy day lovely location just to sit in garden, although cattle and sheep have free roam so that became a problem, but that comes with the location really I suppose. Great island, loads more to explore than we had time for.

We were blessed with the most perfect weather. Sheep are a part of the holiday but with a dog and no fence at all it was very difficult. We also had to ask for a change of duvet as the one provided was old and lumpy!

The cottage was just as expected. Lovely views. Some would find the rough track and remote situation off-putting, but not us. We were on Colonsay in some untypical cold blustery weather but with the two coal fires lit, the cottage was warm and homely. We had a problem with the water supply failing on one occasion but one phone call to the cottage office and the maintenance team solved the problem quickly and were so helpful.
The bed was extremely comfortable with quality bedding ensuring a good night's sleep every night. We have a Skoda Yeti and the rough track did not present us with any problems. Lovely to see the lambs outside the window each morning and to appreciate all the bird life. Thank you Colonsay Estae, we will return again.

Fantastic cottage, away from it all with sea, bracken and sheep views. Comfortable well equipped cottage, we think it's the best on the island...as long as you don't mind a bumpy track and two gates en route

A peaceful and tranquil holiday home with stunning and ever-changing views over to Jura. We had all we needed and even though it was unseasonably cool some evenings, an open fire made us even cosier after long days walking and swimming.

The cottage is on a secluded part of the island near the strand and is an old fashioned cottage with a well kept and recently decorated interior. The garden is large and was a safe place for our kids to play running up and down the hillside in the fresh air. There is a good view of the sea and the ferries can be seen coming and going. There are fireplaces in the kitchen and living room. We ordered our shopping and coal from the local shop and it was waiting for us in the cottage when we arrived. A beautiful place to stay and we will be back!

We were in this cottage for a week in June and whilst the weather outside was still cool, we felt the cottage was cold on arrival and gobbled up electricity in order to keep us adequately warm during the rest of the week. We had no clear advice about how to use the electric heaters most efficiently and ended up with an electricity bill of c£56.00, which we thought was extortionate and a fair proportion of an already pricey accommodation. We also had to use extra blankets on the bed.
I did ring the week before our arrival to enquire about the necessity of coal at the cottage and felt I was reassured that the heaters might be adequate.

The bathroom was especially cold and the fan heater had to be on , when showering. The towel rail made little impact on the towels or air temperature. I think a newish shower over the bath had been fitted but it was very powerful and created a wet bathroom.

Kitchen well equipped and I did use the hob and oven whilst there.

We enjoyed the views over to Jura and Scarba and watching the clouds and ferries come and go.
