We loved the apartment set in beautiful grounds on a beautiful island. The apartment had everything we needed. Beds were comfy, kitchen well equipped. Only minor suggestion would be another chopping board (to share preparation!).

We loved Colonsay and will be back one day.

Lovely location and adequately equipped but layout of flat itself not ideal. Steep, uncarpeted stairway opening onto a narrow landing between the bathroom and kitchen doors. A nasty accident awaits I feel. And as visitors are tasked with sorting own rubbish this is more up and down stairs carrying stuff. We found the beds and pillows too hard for our liking.

Really enjoyed staying at the Stable apartment. Accessed by stairs, the first floor apartment was quiet, clean and cosy with open fire in lounge and well equipped kitchen.

Staff at the Stables were very friendly and pretty laid back. Lovely rooms, very clean. Was a bit concerned that my elderly Dad might have taken a wrong turn and tumbled down the steep stairs in the night - could maybe do with something at the top of the stairs to prevent accidents (from looking at the visitor book, I believe someone did fall down them one time).

Price for one night's stay is very steep.

We have stayed at Stable apartment on a number of occasions since we first came to Colonsay in 1986. It was lovely to see our grandchildren occupying the same space our children used to be in. We rented Stable as one of four apartments booked for an extended family gathering. For family use, we particularly liked the fact the the living room was situated above a non-occupied space which meant we didn't have to be concerned about the inevitable noise young children make.

We loved the place, Colonsay House is very pretty place with welcoming people and cosy accommodation. We could have a fire in the evening, cook our food, enjoy tranquility of the splendid gardens. We will come back.

The apartment has no outdoor space. Frustratingly, the sitting room overlooks a beautiful garden - but this can only be accessed twice a week with a charge of £4 per person.
We arrived to find that the single bed had not been made up. No spare toilet roll had been supplied. There was no plug in the kitchen sink so washing up was a challenge. No salt or cooking oil was provided. We arrived on a Saturday afternoon and the village shop did not open until Monday. The window in the double bedroom would not stay open - we had hot, humid weather for most of our stay.
If I'd paid £100 per night I would have shrugged all these things off. But for £200 per night I expected better quality and more attention to detail.
I think the owner and laird Alex Howard has taken his eye of the ball. From what we learned in conversation with local people, he's probably too busy fighting those who want a better deal on land access so that they can build affordable homes, desperately needed on the island.
The staff were very helpful and friendly. Absolutely no complaints there.
We loved Colonsay and Oronsay - but we will not be returning to Alex Howard's properties.

I have been using Colonsay Estate houses quite regularly for nearly 40 years. Generally the quality and service are better than adequate, The houses inevitably reflect some wear from constant turnover especially at the end of the summer season, but they are always welcoming and comfortable. This visit was as normal with a few specific comments.

The booking process, and especially the availability, are very efficient and stress free and a major advantage over using many of the other providers especially at short notice, as in this visit. Staff also very helpful on site.

Bedding was excellent as ever but the seating was pretty support free and uncomfortable for more than half an hour.

Lighting in the kitchen was very poor especially for cooking. A very dim main light bulb and no cooker light.

Stable Flat has a very steep stair which should be independently lit from outside throughout darkness since it is proportioned and positioned as simply one of a line of room entrances and turning into it by mistake in the middle of the night could be fatal.

Stable is an excellent place for two people travelling as other than a couple, and in this respect I can also commend its quietness - one person can stomp around without waking the other up. The main thing I would like to underline is the quality and promptness of the office staff in responding to questions about the property and the island in general.

I would suggest the following minor improvements:

More coat hangers in the wardrobes - four would be a lot better than one.
Instruction book for the electric stove. Both of us cook by gas, and it took us quite a while to work out how the cooker in the flat works. In fact we never sorted out the oven!

But these are trivial matters.

We had a wonderful holiday on Colonsay and the Stables apartment was a perfect base - comfortable, spacious and ideally situated close to Kiloran beach and in the beautiful woodland gardens. The apartment is well equipped. The staff are friendly and helpful. Colonsay is wonderful for walking , cycling, enjoying nature and generally relaxing . And it has surprisingly good facilities for a small remote island including two excellent eating venues, a well stocked shop and even a bookshop!

Lovely stay at the stable at Colonsay it has stairs up to the apartment and then all on the level.Electric heaters in each room and a coal fire in the lounge.Looking out at the back from the lounge window and two windows along the corridor to the Gardens which are well worth walking round.

The apartment is situated in the centre of the Isle of Colonsay next to Colonsay House. It was easy to find with the directions given. Everything on the island was in easy reach by car, but then it's a small island! The magnificent Kiloran Bay was within easy walking distance. The apartment's decor was a bit tired and could do with updating but on the whole was a good place to stay on Colonsay. Heating was by electricity but seemed to work well enough and there was free coal for the fire in the living room. My wife found the bed rather uncomfortable. The kitchen had everything you would need.

We have taken over a week before writing this review to let our thoughts solidify.

We are privileged to have spent over 10 years travelling the world since our retirement. We found Colonsay to be a superb island in so many ways - good walking, good beaches, good wildlife, friendly inhabitants.

However, we're unsure about the real commitment of the management of Colonsay holidays. There was a sheet to put down what didn't work, but the list for this apartment was long - very noisy tread on staircase, one curtain rail with no end so curtain comes off, saucepans with no lids so we had to use dinner plates and then clean them before serving, a bedside light that didn't work, a poirly lit preparation area in the kitchen a chimney that blew smoke back in the room so thick it was hard to see and the smoke alarms activated, thin bath towels compared with what we usually find in vacation properties.......

We became frustrated with the place and our opinion is that Stable is in need of some low cost care and attention.

We loved our stay on Colonsay. The stunning Kiloran beach a stroll away. Lots of walking and cycling options on the island.

The Stables flat is very comfortable and overlooks the beautiful gardens. It is thoroughly clean on arrival. The bedrooms were fine. The bathroom is spacious and has a shower over the bath - remember to switch on the immersion heater!

I realise it is an historic building, but if I was to suggest areas for improvement, I would say update the living room sofas, and review the wiring so that fewer extension cables are on display. And improve the lighting in the kitchen.

Perhaps not major issues for an active holiday, but we do spend time in the apartment and small improvements could make a big difference.

The team were very helpful and friendly and it was good to meet them in person.

Unfortunately we only had one night in the Stable Apartment due to the cancellation of the ferry.
We found everything we needed most suitable and enjoyed the open fire after arriving late in the evening.
The car park is a lot nearer the apartment than we expected so unloading in the rain was not a problem.
Hope to visit Colonsay again with more time to spend there.

We really enjoyed our stay and loved Colonsay. The grounds of Colonsay House are beautiful but we felt it was a shame that in the gardens there were no signs saying what the plants were and where they came from. There are not many wet weather options on the island so bring books and board games. Wet suits for swimming would be a bonus too.

Lovely 6 night stay at the Stable apartment for a trip to Colonsay.
Very comfortable beds slept so soundly.
Had everything we needed and spacious too, great location for exploring the area.
Very fitting of the period but could do with some freshening up of painted areas, albeit a very clean apartment.
Wish Gardens were open to residents more than just the allocated 2 days at set times just so kids could enjoy some outdoor space of a summers evening.
