School House, Dunan is an historic semi-detached cottage on the waterfront on the Isle of Skye. It has a double and a twin bedroom, family bathroom, a well appointed kitchen and a superb lounge. The views over to the Isle of Scalpay and along the coastline are stunning. There is access to the pebble beach from the garden and there is private parking.

Very tidy cottage, cozy living area, well equipped kitchen and serviceable bathroom. The location of the house by the water, while still just off the main road, means you get to enjoy the beautiful surrounding coastal landscape (with a great view of Scalpay to boot) all the while having no trouble getting back on the road to see the sights of Skye. A short (10 minute) drive to Broadford to get your shopping done and you can easily retreat back to the quiet of the cottage to settle down with a book on the comfortable couches. There are quite some DVDs for younger children available should the weather keep you indoors, but we didn't make use of those as Skye remains pretty enough even when rain is pouring down.

Two very minor notes: as international guests, we struggled a bit figuring out which bin to use for what, which was the only thing left out of the very helpful documentation we received (and the most useful leaflets and booklets left in the house for our convenience). Secondly, the tiniest of notes on the kitchen: be a bit careful in handling the one of the larger pots with the lid in the kitchen, as the handle is a bit wonky and some of the kitchen knives are a bit blunt. But as these are the only 'issues' we encountered in our week here, it should be clear that the house was in excellent condition in all other regards!

We would wholeheartedly recommend the cottage to anyone visiting Skye looking for a relaxing holiday to get away from it all and discover the amazing sights of the island.

A really well located house for exploring Skye and parts of the mainland. Close to Broadford for provisions. Amazing views over to Scalpay and beyond (when the cloud lifted!).
The house had everything. Particularly welcomed having plenty of crockery and cutlery.

Upfront: Legal action is pending against this property owner, who is actually based in Troon, not Skye.

Quite frankly, don't book this property. The keys do not work to either the front or rear door, which is a fire hazard to anyone needing to escape the property in a fire crisis. Unforgivable. The front door opposite the loch did not open whichever key was used, because none of them work in any way whatsoever.

For the price bracket on Skye, as frequent visitors, choose something else for the money aside from any other issues this review raises.

The sink in the bathroom leaks whenever water is run.

The toilet is not seated correctly, which shows at the base with the missing filler.

An accident occurred at this property due to the absolute lack of care shown on the decking which I would show if this site allowed photographs. Let it be known that the property owner lied about post-accident about the state of the decking, which we have photographs and video of via the agent. The paint job alone gives it away and legal action is currently being pursued - if you have booked this property, AVOID the decking which you will see is painted the same as the furniture and is not non-slip. I'm sure their risk assessments will show what their ScotLIS docs also show to be very frank.

DO NOT BOOK THIS PROPERTY. We are in the process of suing the owners directly and bypassing the agency who will be served a full SAR for their comms with the owners.

Complaint Awful! Save your money! I wouldn’t recommend this property to anybody! The cottage was filthy! The loch side view as advertised was occluded by an 8 ft hedge and only visible from top bedroom (only from halfway across the loch) every time the heating fired up, choking fumes bellowed into the back bedroom window, from 2 flues directly outside. Shower at best a trickle didn’t even work if removed from the holder. Dead worms and toenails lay in thick dust under the sofa, along with balls of hair that blew out like tumbleweed if the door was open. We did complain, but the owners response was, her ‘highly qualified heating engineer’ had checked the heating and I was told it was steam!! I do know the difference between toxic fumes and a steam inhalation, and was unable to even go out on the last day, due to being short of breath, sore eyes and a racing heart, … I was told to wrap up in a blanket and go and sit in the garden until my oxygen levels return to normal!! Unbelievable! The hedge wasn't cut as it was home to nesting birds and insects…. This was mid September and any fledgling had long since flown the nest! We couldn’t even have dinner one night because there wasn’t even a tin opener! All wiring was cracked dirty extension leads, the bathroom sink and overflow were absolutely filthy, thick layers of black grease and grime, but according to the owner, that was our fault, we should have complained sooner and she could have arranged a reclean! We did receive a nominal small refund, but only after the last day was spent trying to send letters of complaints and photo and video evidence through a most pathetic dated Wi-Fi system that was slower than a pony express! My sister had booked this holiday in good faith, months in advance, not as any last minute.com cheapy.. it was a misery to return home every night to a house that smelt, and most windows didn’t open more than a crack as the curtain rails prevented opening them properly, the front door took several minutes to get in, dreadful in the pouring rain, and the back door didn’t even open! If there’d have been a fire in the night, nobody upstairs would have got out!… I wish I could say I’m exaggerating, … but sadly I could go on and on… don’t waste your money., the owner is only interested in creaming the profit! Could be a lovely holiday let, but in need of serious maintenance overhaul, not to mention some general TLC.

So awful, where do we start! The cottage STANK when we arrived. Bad cooking smells and a strong smelly dog odour. No fresh air had been in here for a while. Inside kitchen cupboards all very fusty. There is a serious damp problem in the building with significant damp patches & staining in living room and some in the main bedroom. Curtain poles come out of the wall if you try and open the windows. Worst of all, the bed was dirty, smelling of greasy hair and un-fresh linen. This meant - as we arrived at 8pm - we had to wash and dry the bed linen before we could sleep in it. NOT a great start to our holiday! We didn’t therefore have a bed to sleep in on our first night, so had to sleep on the sofa and armchair in the damp, dog-smelling living room. Thankfully the letting agent found us a nice alternative cottage, but the no-sleep night and having to re-pack our car and move hassle meant we lost 2 days of our precious holiday time. AVOID this place at all costs until the absent owners have the decency to rectify this building’s many many woes.

I had to defrost the freezer compartment completely to get anything in it. Even then it is very small which is fine just about when there are two of you but it absolutely wouldn’t be if you had four people staying there. The plumbing is A bit odd. Sometimes when you run the bath the sink tap comes on as well. The shower is also a bit poor being an immersion one. Nearly all of the curtains are hanging off in various places. We thought it was a little bit mean that there were no logs left at all, not even a starter pack.
The property is very good for dogs however which was our main reason for booking it.

The cottage was in a great location. The cottage itself was basic and could do with some upgrades. The lounge curtain had come off it’s railing. The bathroom tap dripped. Not much cleaning products available. There were cobwebs so could do with a good clean. No lightbulb in the utility room. Overall we did enjoy our time there. I would recommend if the finer were improved. Thanks

Generally, a nice house and we enjoyed our stay. That said, there were a number of things that fell short of expectations:
- Usually, on arrival, most holiday lets provide a small welcome pack or at least a few tea bags, coffee and some milk. There was nothing at the School House. After a 7-hour drive, a small welcome pack would have been welcome.
- Cleanliness on arrival was patchy. The main sofa wasn't clean and the living room rug was not great. There was also dog hair downstairs and a bad dog smell.
- The bedsheets were old, worn and bobbly.
- Dripping taps in the bathroom.
- The information provided in the property handbook was limited.

Overall, a good cottage, but a little more thoughtfulness and attention to detail would have made it perfect.

It was mostly fine. The twin beds were very hard so my teenage children weren't very comfortable. The curtain poles in the bedrooms did not fit properly and were hanging down at an angle so had to put a towel up at the window to screen the light.

The location, while beautiful, was not ideal for us as it was not practically possible to walk along the shore or the road (no pavement).

Stunning location - whole place is probably in need of a little tlc and deep clean but it’s a good value for money cottage. Found the bed uncomfortable, had a weird foam mattress topper which wasn’t comfortable at all. The location can’t be faulted and overall I’d recommend this cottage. One thing I would be careful of is the wooden floors. It’s very nice to have old polished wooden floors and stairs but they are actually quite dangerous if your wearing just socks, our children slipped over twice, one was a pretty nasty tumble down the stairs - I would think a carpet runner for the stairs would be sensible

We were very lucky with the week as the weather was glorious but the location was equally beautiful. Nestled on the shores of the Loch it just feels idyllic. The house was lovely, it was clean and functional with a view to die for. We had breakfast and tea out on the decking and it felt that we could have been abroad. Would definitely recommend.

Would recommend a stay here to anyone in need of time to relax and get away from everything.
The garden gate leads to a beach that could be classed as private, we saw one person in the whole week!
Seals in the sea (viewed numerous times, once while on the loo!!!!!).
Perfect stay for anyone who likes peace and nature.

We had a great stay in a sunny October school holiday. Central area to explore the whole island, the house has an idyllic old-fashioned feel and the log burner is great. The only grip we had was the internet very poor which then effects the Freeview. Max download speeds when it was working was 2.5 mbps upload was 0.5 mbps, but fortunately we weren’t there to watch TV and browse the internet. Nice short walk along the shingle cost. Ooh and the fridge freezer is half size a full size fridge freezer would be best for a family of 4 we did struggle a bit

The cottage is situated in a perfect location between the tourist destinations in the north and the hill walking of the central south part of Skye. The cottage has everything you need for a family holiday, although the WiFi / Freeview TV can be a bit flaky in heavy rain storms! The fridge started displaying an intermittent fault half way through our stay and a new fridge was delivered the following day- outstanding customer service. Overall, highly recommended cottage and agent. Thanks.

We had a really great time at this lovely, cozy, charming and comfortable old School House! We especially enjoyed the great location which was central on the island, near the main road which you didn't hear that much. There's a steep hill to drive to access the property, but it's manageable. The beds were comfortable and the House had almost everything we wanted and needed (except for a coffee machine/french press). We were really impressed with the great service of Islands & Highlands. Our highlight of this house is the amazing view over the Loch that you can enjoy all day! Thank you so much for this great cottage, we would love to come back someday!

Being near a main road and only about 15 minutes from the The School House is in a great location for seeing the sites of Skye and the mainland.
We did have a few issues with the cottage while we were there, most of them niggles (like a drawer front coming off), one of them the fault of Scottish Water, and we really struggled with the steep, gravel track in our little 1.2l car. However, I understand that the track is due to be tarmaced this summer. Once that's done I'd be happy to go back - but until then, I think it would be best to park at the top of the drive.
Islands and Highlands were great at sorting out our issues and I would have no hesitation in booking another cottage with them.

We booked the School House for our daughter and her husband for their honeymoon. As a family we had holidayed on Skye for numerous years during our daughter's childhood. The owner and the staff of Highlands and Islands couldn't have been more helpful before whilst we were trying to sort things out for them - they really did go above and beyond - and on their arrival they found a bottle of bubbly and a congratulations card waiting for them, which was a lovely touch. Thank you!

They were both very pleased with the condition of the cottage, it was very clean and tidy, the bed was very comfortable, the kitchen well stocked (utensil wise - which can be a downfall of some holiday homes!). The location is just beautiful, with a gate out onto the shoreline and stunning views from inside the house. It is in an ideal situation to tour around Skye, just minutes from Broadford for any provisions you might need, and they managed to visit lots of familiar haunts, including Camus Malag, Torrin, Portree and the Waternish peninsula, amongst others.

They would stay here again without a doubt. And we can't recommend Highlands and Islands staff highly enough for all their help.

Amazing location very picturesque and in the centre of the island. Not many places you can get the best of the mountains, exploring, wildlife and the sea. Also near to the main route across the island but you can't actually really hear the road. We live normally in a quiet house and the nearby road didn't bother us in the slightest. Good layout inside the house. One twin room and one double room. Very nice new bathroom although shower could be better. There were a few things missing like the grill grate for the oven and the racks didn't fit the oven properly. Also I think it is the colour of the doors and the one locked "private" door that gives the house a bit of a spooky feel?!
These last bits really aren't major points and after an issue with the bed breaking the agent and owner VERY quickly arranged it to be fixed and promised to look at the oven etc. A very slick relationship.
We were very chuffed with our choice for the week and think you will be too.
After a long days exploring we struggled to find a cafe or pub to just chill and enjoy the views so we went back to the house, turned the chairs round so they looked over the loch and chilled out there. Perfect! Not many houses could do that!

Really enjoyed our stay. The house is comfortable and cosy, in a lovely location by the shore, great for watching passing wildlife. Saw seals, herons, curlew, oystercatcher, shag ,goosander.Beautiful views from living room and bedroom.
However, some issues with cleanliness : hair in bath plughole, mould growing on plate in microwave [the interior of which also needed cleaning due to food spatter], dirty kitchen cupboard by fridge , which had numerous mug rings. Not sure how such things can be missed...
We also felt the kitchen lacked a few basics, ie handwash, kitchen roll, a drainer for plates, cutlery etc, as it felt a little precarious balancing washing up.

Cottage is in a stunning and well centred location for exploring the whole of Skye, which we did.
Facilities of cottage were excellent everything you needed was provided except for maybe an axe to cut the wood as was too large to fit in multi burner stove. All rooms had a view and the view from the beach was brilliant. Was told from previous entries in guest book about wild life you can see but the best we got was herons but we were out exploring Skye more than we were in the cottage but I'm sure they are (otters)
We will deifinately be back next time we are up in the area. (feel free to share this review in the guest book as we never had a pen to fill in an entry)

This is a very comfortable cottage in a stunning position and well located to tour Skye. A little more attention to detail would have made this perfect.
Well equipped and really quiet.
Would highly recomend.

We spent a nice week in Old School House, situated directly on the sea. a very calm and comfy place. Inside and outside you find erverything you need. Beautifully furnished. From each room (beside the kitchen) you can see the sea.
